I was at this excellent Georgian spot yesterday with a small group. The waitress was friendly and…read moregave some recommendations. The place was pretty empty, but they were doing some takeout. As we were waiting for the rest of the group, I decided to order a beer, and they had some Georgian ones. I went with the $6 Shavi Lomi, a helles, which was tasty. They also had Kazbegi along with some more standard beers and a good variety of Georgian wine. For non-alcoholic drinks, there were a few brands of Georgian lemonade (Natakhtari/Zandukeli), along with sodas, compote, and other options. The first to arrive was the $9.99 Acharuli Khachapuri, or as many other places spell it, Adjaruli. This boat-shaped bread, which was filled with two types of cheese, arrived with some butter and a raw egg on it, as is typical. The waitress mixed the two types of cheese with the egg and butter well, and we dug in. Outside of the very reasonable price for the size, it was standard and good, with a nice stretchy texture and a good bit of salt but not too much. The other appetizer was the Assorted Pkhali for $16.99, with eggplant, spinach, and beets with walnuts. The dish came with six pieces of the nigvziani badrijani, or rolled eggplant, as well as two each of the spinach and beet pkhali. All were filled with a mixture of ground walnuts, spices, and plenty of herbs and topped with a couple of pomegranate seeds. This was an excellent version with plenty of garlic and herbs, and as usual, my favorite was the spinach, followed by the eggplant and then the beets. The rest of the dishes we ordered were all from the hot dishes section and were all $14.99. Our favorite was the Shkmeruli, or fresh chicken in garlic sauce. The dish was presented a bit more uniquely than at other places, with the chicken broken up into 7 or so pieces. This was nice as it made it easy to split and left all the meat bathing in the delicious, rich, garlicky sauce on the bottom. There was also some toasted bread for a bit of crunch, all topped with minced garlic for extra flavor. The chicken was very tender, and the sauce was well flavored, with this being the closest to, or tied with, the much more expensive Saperavi. We also got the excellent Pork Ojakhuri, simply listed as pork and potatoes, with a Sokos version available with mushrooms instead of pork also for the same price. The meat was cooked nicely, and it had a bit of smokiness. The very hot potatoes were soft and tender, with the dish also containing grilled onions, chopped scallions, and plenty of herbs. The potatoes and onions had plenty of flavor, presumably from being cooked in the same pot as the pork. There was also the Kupati, listed as Georgian-style sausages. The dish came with three sausages split in half, with some raw onion and pomegranate seeds on top. Compared to other spots, the meat felt a bit less ground, so it felt a bit richer, with larger pieces of pork fat. I didn't mind this, but some others disliked the chewier texture of the large pieces. The spices helped cut this richness, and overall, I enjoyed it. Last and least was the Chashushuli, or veal stew with fresh tomatoes and herbs. We asked for their recommendation between a few stews, and she said that one was her favorite. From previous experience, I tend to find the broth in this stew pretty watery, and this was not an exception here, which made it a bit harder to split. We added some $2 Regular Bread to sop up the sauce and also used a couple of pieces of the remaining Khachapuri. The meat was very tender inside, and there was a nice mix of herbs, while the tomatoes added some sweetness. This was our least favorite, but I partially expected that going in, and going by how well all the meat was cooked, I think I would have preferred the Lulya or something else grilled. This was a reasonably priced and tasty Georgian spot, with my only major complaint being that it was a schlep to get to. The prices were low, the staff was friendly, and the food was excellent. It's difficult to complain about this place.

Each dish comes with a house salad, which consists of red cabbage, sauerkraut, cole slaw, beets, shredded carrots, and lettuce. The salad had nice flavors and tasted fresh! I really enjoyed the chicken klopsiki, which is a chicken meatball. The meatball was moist, and the sauce had a nice flavor, like chicken soup. The only downside was that the mashed potatoes had no flavor and tasted like powdered mashed potatoes. I liked the flavor of the Hungarian pancakes, but the ratio of pancake to filling was heavily skewed toward the pancake, which was just fried potato with minimal flavor. Therefore, I would pass on the pancakes and just get the goulash if I decided to return. Service was okay. When I asked the server for recommendations, she wasn't enthusiastic, but I was asking generally, and I could have been more specific. She left during our meal, and we had to call someone to give us the check. So after giving us the food, service was nonexistent. The salad needed a pinch of salt, but there was a shaker on the table and with that addition, it was a decent refreshing appetizer. The tender, handcut pasta seems to be layered with flavorful lamb fat like the most decadent possible buttered noodles and the ground lamb topping is rich and perfectly seasoned. The yogurt sauce gives the dish balance. It's a fairly large portion that could easily be shared between two. I highly recommend this spot, the glowing reviews are not exaggerating at all. I often like to try new and unusual restaurants, and sometimes I enjoy them mostly for the novelty. That was not the case at Village Cafe. My meal here was delicious and I am eager to return, even with the 75 minute commute from north Brooklyn.

We didn't have a reservation and the restaurant was completely full. At first, we were told there were no available tables, but the wonderful ladies at the front desk kindly spoke with the manager and found a table for two that had been reserved by guests delayed in heavy traffic for two hours. We were truly happy and deeply grateful for their kindness and willingness to help. It was my first time visiting this large and beautiful restaurant with several dining halls and a lovely summer terrace. The design is absolutely stunning. The staff is highly professional, polite, and always happy to recommend dishes when guests need help choosing. Every dish we ordered was prepared flawlessly -- incredibly delicious and artistically presented with great taste and attention to detail. The pistachio and meringue dessert was simply breathtaking, decorated with a delicate caramel lace that beautifully showcased the pastry chef's craftsmanship. I would like to thank the entire welcoming and well-coordinated team and express special gratitude to the restaurant owner and the chef for creating this wonderful island of fine dining in Brighton. Would it hold up, or was the disappointment inevitable? I'm happy to report that I've returned twice this year, and the white borscht is still as delicious as I remembered. It's warm, comforting, and a little tart, with slices of smoky, meaty kielbasa and hard-boiled eggs. For other standouts on the menu, their fried cheese and potato pierogis are great, with a decent amount of filling and perfectly caramelized onions on top. The sour cream's a must, though I hate that it was an extra 75 cents. Their platters are also hearty and can easily be split into two portions. You can't go wrong with the flavorful Polish platter, which features stuffed cabbage, kielbasa, hot sauerkraut with meat (my mouth is watering just thinking about this), and three pierogis.
