A Beautiful Mother's Day Celebration Today my daughter invited me to celebrate Mother's Day at Vis-a-Vis Restaurant in Brooklyn. We didn't have a reservation and the restaurant was completely full. At first, we were told there were no available tables, but the wonderful ladies at the front desk kindly spoke with the manager and found a table for two that had been reserved by guests delayed in heavy traffic for two hours. We were truly happy and deeply grateful for their kindness and willingness to help. It was my first time visiting this large and beautiful restaurant with several dining halls and a lovely summer terrace. The design is absolutely stunning. The staff is highly professional, polite, and always happy to recommend dishes when guests need help choosing. Every dish we ordered was prepared flawlessly -- incredibly delicious and artistically presented with great taste and attention to detail. The pistachio and meringue dessert was simply breathtaking, decorated with a delicate caramel lace that beautifully showcased the pastry chef's craftsmanship. I would like to thank the entire welcoming and well-coordinated team and express special gratitude to the restaurant owner and the chef for creating this wonderful island of fine dining in Brighton. We have been here two times in two months. First to celebrate a friend's fortieth birthday and on another occasion we went with a much smaller party of six. On both occasions we had an awesome time and enjoyed the entertainment and the food. For larger parties you can plan your menu in advance with a couple of different packages and you can take home any of the leftover courses. BYOB for the party you are having. You can also order from their menu and from their bar as well. Plan on staying for at least four hours if you're into dancing and the show. read more

Exceptional service, kind of unexpected in Brighton Beach! The waiters were lovely and super attentive. Very good Russian French fusion food on a spacious covered outdoor patio not too far from the beach. The escargot "purses" made of crepes were out of this world. We attended a birthday party dinner, the cold appetizers were delicious. The smoked salmon was incredible, so tender. The crab salad tasted great, grilled shrimp with guacamole was delicious and enjoyed the grill octopus which was tender. The hot appetizers were fantastic, particularly sautéed mushroom and potatoes tasted great. By the time the main entree came we were already full but had to indulge in lamb chops that were absolutely the most delicious that melted in your mouth. Vis a Vis is a class act. Whether you are having an intimate dinner for 2 or having a group dinner for 20 or more people, they seem to find a way to provide quality food and superior service. It almost seems they have anything you would want to eat. They also have a huge bar of many varieties of drinks. The service is constant and wonderful. If you have a concern, they find a way to alleviate your concerns. I do not recall any other restaurant that provides this high quality of service. When you request a drink, the bartenders provide high quality glass and picture quality display of your drink. Even their dessert platters are varied and delicious. They even have valet since it's difficult to find parking in the neighborhood. Going to Vis a Vis is a nice experience that anyone would want to have. If you are also willing to spend on a quality restaurant, I would highly recommend this place for any occasion! read more

This place caused me a bit of a cognitive dissonance. We came in for dinner. Great Decor. Excellent Service. Well balanced wine list and menu. But Prices like Haute Cuisine restaurant in at in Midtown Manhattan. The menu is solid but not more than that and the presentation and ingredients are no more then a lot of other places are doing but again seemed to be overpriced for what you get. The decor of this place is... impactful. The more I look at it, the more I love and HATE it. It's Eastern European but make it 90s AND borders on the line of campy. Either way, I had an intense reaction, and that is kind of good? We went for brunch. We ordered the steak and eggs (which was fineeee). I had to drag out the E because, while I'm not complaining about it, it isn't something I'd order again. My partner had the mushroom omelet and also thought it was fine. The omelete was a huge portion, so I doubt you'd leave hungry. The bill was $40 for two, which is reasonable for what we got, but I doubt I'd go back. Amazing Russian banquet style restaurant. Most of the people in Soviet Union couldn't attend such place because it was simply not available to them. Only a very small group of elites had access to the delicious food and excellent service. Today, it is available to anyone who visits Brooklyn. Great mix of Soviet Russian and European cuisines in the menu, big selection of French, Italian and American wines, waiters who memorize your order (and don't record it), available photo session and valet parking. Even cappuccino was good. Of all the different things we've tried, I would recommend the herring, potatoes with mushrooms and meat/cheese plate (it comes with grapes and honey, so it is amazing with red wine). I would not recommend the fried dumplings, better have them boiled. Will definitely come there again next time I'm in NY. read more

First off, for my engineers: DMX lighting IN THE ENTIRE DAMN RESTAURANT. Those who don't know; I have worked at every single high end venue in NYC and no one has lights like here. That is my way of segwaying to the food which made a vegan break his ethics to try a skirt steak so flavorful and masterfully marbles and seasoned. Or was it the jumbo prawn that doubled down on flavor? I arrived to Vis a Vis yesterday at 6:30 and requested a table for three. I have been here before and wanted to show my family and friend a good time as the food was amazing there the previous times I have been there. The woman told me I could have a table till 8:30-no apology, no explanations, nothing. In addition, the restaurant looked half empty. Given that I was given a time limit and the woman was extremely rude, I will never be coming here nor bringing my family nor friends here. I can't even find words for how much I enjoyed coming here. I am one of those people who lives on the Upper East Side and does not leave the area unless I have a very compelling reason to do so. That being said, Vis a Vis will be seeing me in a Brighton Beach again! The food here might be the best I've ever had. I came here with friends for a birthday party and we received great service. I have never seen efficiency at this level. Russians really run a tight ship! As for the food, I devoured it all too quickly to take any photos. The highlights of the menu were the: - kale and shrimp salad - skirt steak salad (wow! So good) - grilled octopus - tuna tartare - Russian potatoes with mushrooms I have to credit my Russian friend for these recommendations, but daaaamn that was a night of eating to remember. This place actually got even more fun, post-eating. There's a whole pickup, dance scene which is very entertaining if you enjoy people watching. All I have to say is the Russians at Vis a vis know how to party. This is coming from a 20-something manhattanite who was blown away by the 40-50-60 somethings knowing how to have fun at Vis a Vis. Two other things to note: the decor is very opulent and also the bathroom cleanliness was A+++++ even later in the evening. Vis a Vis is a pretty fancy looking restaurant located in Brighton Beach. I've passed by it a few times thinking " hmmmm its so fancy! I wonder what that's like?" So on a random Thursday evening, my boyfriend and I came in here to grab a late night dinner. It seems Vis a Vis is typically where most people have their fancy parties. Tonight was no exception as it appeared a family party was starting to wrap up. We were seated in the main dining area by the bar. The restaurant itself is actually quite beautiful - beautiful chandeliers, tapestry, chairs, the works! It definitely had a very upscale vibe to it. Now to the food: Spanish Grilled Octopus salad: I actually really enjoyed this dish. While I normally am not a huge fan of salads, I would partake in it from time to time.... if there were tasty ingredients to it. The octopus in this salad was the star: huge bits of perfectly cooked octopus that was not two chewy or too tough. The salad had a good mixture of everything in it - though the only parts of this salad I disliked were the cucumber bits. Gourmet Foie Gras Pate: I love foie gras! I am a huge fan of foie gras - however on my scale of how I like my foie gras, pate version is a bit on the lower end of that. However, this pate was delicious: creamy and perfect on toasted bread. Yum! Russian Style Home Fries with Wild Mushrooms: This was my favorite dish. I love potatoes, I love home fries, and I love mushrooms. What could go wrong? This is a definite must order in my opinion. The portion of this was huge: certainly this one dish could easily be portioned out to 4 people. Moulard Duck Magnet: My boyfriend ordered this dish, and I was only a teensy bit jealous but also happy I didn't order it. The portion of this dish was huge, and the duck was cooked quite well: juicy and tender without being dry at all. This came with a huge bed of mashed potatoes. While the dish itself was quite tasty and all, it wasn't Special: Mushroom Risotto: As a risotto, it wasn't great. It wasn't cooked as a true risotto as the rice was not fully cooked through to give it the starchy creaminess. However, as a rice dish with mushrooms, this was absolutely delicious. The mushrooms were fresh and so delicious - there were at least 2 different types of mushrooms in this to give it a hearty flavorful taste. The rice was solid and there was enough cheese to create such a great aroma to the dish. As a risotto: total fail. As a rice dish, winner winner! It's worth it to come here to try a dish - I'm banking as a dinner party place, it would be wonderful! Check in tip: Lychee martinis are free! read more

To me, this is one of those "fancy" places for newly-rich "Russians" to show off. Casual friday evening, the end of Brighton Beach (go back, lol!) and everybody's dressed up like it's at least some presidential fundraiser dinner. :) And this is why I can't give it 5 stars - the atmosphere in this place is just too cheesy. But I was there with a large group and we had a lot different appetizers. Everything was very yummy and my skirt steak right after was a perfection (except we are not in Morocco and I'd prefer good mashed potatoes instead of couscous). But still, enjoyed the food a lot. I must take my hat off to the Owners, the Chefs, the waiters the bus boys, the bartenders, the bouncers, the DJ, the managers. The whole Vis a Vis team. The table was served to perfection. Everything on that table complemented each other. From freshest burata to sliced smoked duck, from crab salad served in avocado to every tartar imaginabl, from short rib to four gras and then when you think they will stop bringing out the food, you've got another thing coming. The entries start. A chilean sea bass that is a fluffy as clouds, the lamb chops tasted as if they where butchered this morning. The beef was so soft it melted In my mouth. I must talk about service. I have traveled all over the world and dined in many restaurants in lots of countries, nothing surpassed the service we have received as Vis a Vis. The waiters where always present yet invisible. Glasses were filled the minute they became empty, Freash plates exchanged without customers even seen when it happened. Wow. I don't know what is a judging criteria for Michelin star but this place is nominated by me. read more

I ordered a grilled salmon with grilled vegetables and a garden salad. I must honestly say that this was truly one of the best salmon that I have ever had. This is an amazing restaurant.. They have a helpful, friendly staff that was able to get and help me with everything I wanted to eat/drink..They have awesome food that is both unique and delicious.. They have many types too, including Russian, French, etc... ONE AMAZING feature they have is unisex bathrooms, with private and "separate toilet rooms", it keeps everyone on track and waiting for like 1 minute, tops!
