    This Bluefin Tuna seems unreal!

Clean, fast, well-priced, and high quality sushi overall. The omakase experience was a great introduction of Toronto to my out of town friends. The service was amazing - our waters were kept full and they IMMEDIATELY cleaned or removed dirty items to be ready for the next course. Our chef was kind, meticulous, and consistently taught feedback on the cuisine (what were our favorite items and why, how the current offering was, etc).

Dined at MSSM for the omakase set on Thursday, December 12, 2025 at 8 pm. Honestly, I'm glad I waited this long to write this review because after having omakase at a different place about a year later to compare apples to apples, I didn't think the omakase at MSSM was worth the hype. This was my first omakase experience ever and it was underwhelming. I came early because I like to be punctual especially when the reservation times seemed pretty strict to adhere to reserved times. However, my reservation was still delayed because two individuals in the same party was late. I was already annoyed. What further increased my annoyance was the fact that the chefs had to slice and cut each fish between each round. I think it would've been more time efficient had the chefs cut all the fish and make each piece back to back. Don't get me wrong, the quality of the omakase was good. I could tell the fish tastes fresh and were of high quality. But the experience was severely hindered by the long wait. Wasn't really that fulfilling either and left kinda hungry. Overall, it's a nice snacky place with a casual vibe. The chefs are super friendly and interactive. They like to sing and talk.

I came for a friend's birthday on a Saturday to try their set $98 omakase. Overall, it's a great value for what you get, especially for getting that omakase experience without needing to break the bank, which I can really appreciate. I felt it was a good amount of food, and I was comfortably full by the end of it. I'm definitely not a sushi or omakase connoisseur... I don't really ever go to expensive restaurants and this was one of the few omakase experiences I've had in my lifetime so far. I did feel the fish was fresh, though. The offerings were pretty standard, and I guess that's what you get for the value aspect. The environment at the restaurant itself was more modern, lively and loud than I was expecting... contrary to the serene omakase vibes I had expected initially. Our sushi chef was nice and served each course at a good pace. Very decent spot for an affordable omakase experience... I think there were some opportunities and details missed by the chef that could have taken the experience to a 5 star, but I would definitely recommend overall.

My wife and I came for my birthday. We arrived a little too early but the staff were extremely accommodating and started serving us right away. Our chef of the night was Bo (Beau?) who we connected with right away. Our neighbours were talkative that night as well so it was such a special gay experience. It's a lot less formal than most omakase restaurants (you could tell by the setting and vibes of the place - graffiti style street art kn the walls, blue ambient lighting and hip hop music playing in the back) it is actually encouraged for you to make conversation! The fish selection was different from my last visit two years ago and it was just as amazing (it actually was even better than last time which shows you how much they really care about making the next meals afterwards for guests). Since it was my birthday, our chef was kind enough to give me an extra slice of whichever fish selection I wanted from the menu! I was feeling a bit full (which has never happened before) and felt bad that I couldn't finish the miso soup or chawan, but everything was so so SO good I did my best to finish everything on my plate. The Shiso sorbet was the perfect finish palate cleanser to end the meal and helped cool down my tummy.

We had a really lovely experience with phenomenal sushi for a reasonable price. Arrived promptly as the experience starts on time. We had a phenomenal sushi chef (Ken?) who was clearly very skilled in both his sushi cuts and the composition of the pieces. He also was helpful in educating us on certain aspects of the fish. The menu had many known pieces but also a couple of surprising pieces we never had before. Every single bite we had from beginning to end was good, and the meal was incredibly efficient, ending just under 90 minutes.

One of the most interactive omakase I've had. Chef was knowledgeable, he starts off the meal with a handroll to gauge how much rice, wasabi, sauce and stuff you like on you sushi. He then teaches you how to best enjoy each dish. Best of all, he preps your sushi right infront of you! He would also answer any questions you have when it comes to scoring the fish. Service is also splendid! He cleans your plate after ever piece. My favorite ones are the handroll, salmon of course, and that chawanmushi in crab sauce! Its definitely a must try! Worth the penny.

Great experience! I thoroughly Enjoyed a well curated 14 course Omasake meal at MSSM the other day. The entire restaurant is bar seating which allows you to watch each course being prepared. The chef was very nice and knowledgeable. Some of the best sushi I have had. Everything was so fresh and flavourful. The service was very attentive and professional. Highly recommended.

I've always believed that Toronto has one of the best food scenes, and in certain niches--like mid-range omakase--it even surpasses New York City. MSSM is the perfect example of why. At 97 CAD per person, you'd be hard-pressed to find better value. The sushi was good quality, the menu was creative, and every course felt thoughtfully executed. I've heard that the experience can vary depending on the chef, but I was lucky to have an incredible one. We even tried the Uni Kiss, and the uni was unbelievably fresh--one of the highlights of the meal. Having recently had an omakase at a similar price point in NYC, I can confidently say that MSSM blows it out of the water. If you're looking for top-tier sushi without the sky-high price tag, you're in for a treat at MSSM.

Very solid omakase for the price! I think this is also a very approachable omaskae for someone who has never been or is less familiar with sushi. Everything was well prepared and there was a good spread of different fish and flavours. We also got lucky and there was a special for toro for $3, instead of the usual $9.99. Making a reservation was easy, and there's parking next door or within walking distance of the TTC. Pretty casual atmosphere with lights and pop music playing. Service was also great!

Delicious, high quality omakase at the right price! I was so excited to try this place out and were lucky to have gotten a reservation for 7 people. Make sure you book early as it was packed! Small restaurant with only bar seating so we could watch the chef prepare every dish, and to be able to converse with them which was a nice touch. Everything felt very fresh and they really paid attention to every little detail. Even the rice was prepared perfectly and they suggest that you eat each piece without 10 seconds to get the optimal temperature for the rice. Definitely recommend that you experience it for yourself if you're looking for a omakase that won't break the bank.

Extended travel for a conference in toronto and come across this reasonably-priced $98Cdn omakase in a posh place. It indeed lives up to standard. The sushi is generally good though but the craft is not perfect yet, like a bit of more wasabi than expected for some pieces. Overall, still great for the price. The ambience is great for date - posh and young. Virtually all bar seats. Service on par with any good restaurants though waiting area for the table is a bit odd.

First of all, MSSM does not have 2 Michelin stars - its omakase menu is curated by a 2-star Michelin chef (Masaki Saito), and the execution is by his students. However, with a price tag of $98, it is fairly rare to find omakase for this price. There are 14 courses total, which includes miso soup as one and sorbet as another. What you mainly pay for is the experience of sitting at the bar and watching the chef prepare the sushi in front of you, including roasting the seaweed, slicing the sashimi, and torching the fish. Because we were a large group, it took some time for each course to come out and there was little interaction with the chef. I loved most of the courses, with some of my favourites being the toro (bluefin tuna belly) nigiri and toro handroll, torched eel, chawanmushi sushi, and marinated salmon. The toro melts in your mouth, with the marinated rice soaking up the oils from the fish as you chew, and is the single best bite of the entire menu! The eel surprised me since typically sushi restaurants drench their eel in a sweet bbq sauce that I'm not a fan of, but without the overpowering sauce, I was able to appreciate the taste of the fish a lot better. The chawanmushi is full of umami, warm, and delightful! The dashi tamago (egg) was also delicious, as well as the miso soup - the best I've ever had. Although the menu said there would be an ebi sushi (prawn), it was substituted with squid (not my favourite), which we were told right before. There was also redundancy in the torched sea bream appetizer and sea bream nigiri. The striped jack was just okay as it was quite fishy. I was hoping for some more premium ingredients for the price tag. The dessert was a shiso sorbet, which was refreshing but tasted kind of like soap. I've seen strawberry daifuku on the menu before, but I guess they change it up from time to time. The service was great, with our water replenished constantly and our dishes cleared away as soon as the next course is about to start. Wet hand towels are available at each seat and replaced when used.

This was my first omakase experience ever. Overall, it was pretty good and I'm glad that I tried it but similar to some other reviewers. I also expected a slightly different ambiance and overall experience. Maybe my expectations were slightly incorrect or slightly too high, but I expected more silence and focus on the food, but there was actually loud pop/rap music playing the whole time. I also expected a lot more explanation of what we were eating, but the overall experience was much less interactive than I expected. So while the food was very good, it felt like the rest of the experience was more distracting than supporting.

First to know is you can't pay with credit card here--there's an ATM in the front of the restaurant. As far as the restaurant goes, it was fantastic from start to finish. Our table of 4 was seated and serviced by 1 main staff member, Lydia, who talked us through the whole menu and ordering system, recommended some great starts and then kept us frequently updated all throughout dinner. She checked up on us along with her assistants who were also bringing items and servicing the table. The food quality was excellent with juicy and flavorful cuts of beef along with the shrimp, pork, veggies, side dishes/ponchon, and rice--it kept coming consistently. Grill changes were frequent as well. The atmosphere is lively and there are a lot of servers so you aren't trying get someone's attention all the time. But it doesn't feel too cramped at the same time. As it is AYCE, everyone in our group left full of course and enjoyed each course. I liked the almond tofu at the end! ----TL;DR---- Pros: great selection of meats, quality was top notch, huge portions of course as it is AYCE, service was prompt and all staff were really friendly. Cons: no reservations so need to be on a waitlist. The no credit card system is a bit of an inconvenience. Bottom Line: we loved it--definitely would go back again and enjoy more of their selections! You have to try them if you like meat and AYCE!

It's my go-to spot to get my don fix - I love the wide variety of dons (rice bowls) that they offer with various fish and seafood combinations. There are also unique appetizers in the menu, such as Purple Yam Croquettes, Crab Crackers, Braised Bamboo Shoots with Shirasu (immature whitebait fish), and Takowasa (marinated raw octopus pieces, to be eaten with or wrapped in nori / seaweed). Although the dons are the main highlight of their menu (hence the restaurant name), they also offer traditional sushi, sashimi, sushi rolls and sets (similar to other Japanese sushi restaurants). Miso Aburi Scallops were very flavourful - nicely torched, giving the scallops a nice grill / char taste. They came with red and green seaweed, and a bit of fish roe. Large Premium Hana Don contained a good amount of fish and seafood, including a whole abalone, uni, shrimp in the shell, aburi salmon, ikura (salmon roe), salmon sashimi, tuna sashimi, yellowtail sashimi, other various fish sashimi, tamago (egg), and a few slices of cucumber on a generous bed of rice. I liked that the rice was a mix of white rice and some type of dark-coloured grains. Unatama Don came with a big piece of unagi and tamago (egg) that were both excellent. The sashimi were all fresh. Okonomiyaki was disappointing but it was sort of expected... for only $9, it was about 99% just flour pan-fried in a patty, without any substantial fillings (unlike real okonomiyaki, which usually contains protein / seafood, cabbage, eggs, and other ingredients). We got a bunch of dishes to share and overall liked most things but some things (like the oyster) unfortunately didn't hit as well. Wagyu - thin slices but very tender and very flavorful with the cheese - surprised by how well the flavor combo worked out. Tofu - easily one of my fave agedashi tofu. Huge tofu slices with very chewy outer texture, a bit gelatinous . Really went well with the sauce and toppings Carbonara - nice chewy texture to the udon, not too soft and not too firm. The sauce was nice and creamy. Not as truffley as I thought it would be, wish it was a little more but it was still pretty good Oyster - least favorite of all the dishes we got today. It was a bit sour and the cheese felt like it didn't really help the flavor profile of the oysters. It was super oily from the cheese, felt like it was drowning in cheese/oil flavor Cod - it looks good but something is lacking, maybe in taste? Feel like maybe the marinade did not penetrate enough. The texture is still nice and soft , with a crisp skin . Also was a bit too oily for our liking, compared to other miso cod we have had. It was also a relatively smaller piece of cod. Overall, the appetizers were really good! The oyster and cod were a bit disappointing. Would come back for the carbonara and the other appetizers mentioned though!
