This restaurant caught my attention on my drive home with huge banners advertising Nashville Hot Chicken. I hit a u-turn to try the restaurant out. I ordered 6wings that cost 9.00 that didn't include fries or drinks. This restaurant has very little combo selections. Fries is an extra $4.00 and a drink another $4.00. The wings are a eye sore. They don't look appetizing at all (see photos). Despite the look of the wings, I tried them. They are extra extra extra extra crispy. I mean overly crispy. Which made it a challenge to get to the actual chicken. I do like the sauces they provided for the chicken. Especially the honey raspberry sauce. They get a star for their unique sauces. I was pretty stoked to give this place a try. I ordered a half bird all dark with red beans and rice as a side. I think the size of the chicken itself was good, also the quality was impressive. It needed just like 30 seconds more in the fryer though. Thats kinda where the good ends. Placing the white bread in the container on the bottom completely turned the white bread to mush. The pickles? Why are you using a standard boring non house made pickle slice? It takes barely any prep time to make fresh pickle slices. The biggest thing that was a disappointment for my money spent was the red beans and rice. Absolutely flavorless. Tasted like a white rice with no salt and a couple beans and two very small cut up sausage in it. I hated seeing the menus on the door and on the order area with a piece of tape over 4 on the tenders and a 3 written over it. Thats just so lazy. I had a chance to try the tenders and they where very strange. I think with some major management involvement this could be a great place. It needs a lot of work. The fries are also so crispy and so good but make sure to eat them fresh because if they sit for a while, they get rubbery. We both ordered the Yardbyrd Sandwich and it's available in 5 different heat levels. I chose mild (2) and he chose medium (3). For $12 you get a chicken sandwich and your choice of a side. We picked the baked potato casserole and the crinkle cut fries BBQ rub. First impression - the sandwich was packed and pretty big. The server provided us knifes because it can get messy. I proceeded to cut the sandwich and half and the sandwich oozed out with a puddle of sauce. I took my first bite and the flavors were very overwhelming. Too much sauce and the mustard taste was overbearing. Mild (2) was perfect for me because I like food with a little kick and can't handle too much heat. The chicken was cooked well but the sandwich got soggy super quick because of all the sauce. The sides were good, I enjoyed the baked potato casserole and the fries. I couldn't finish my sandwich in one sitting so I took the other half to go. To my surprise it tasted better cold, even though it's meant to be served hot. What Mrs Chicken serves is nicely fried chicken breast meat flavored with a wet, vinegar based sauce, and bbq rub spiced chips. This is fine for what it is- fried chicken with what you typically associate buffalo wing sauce. I am not discounting this, but it is not Nashville Hot chicken. As someone who lived in Nashville metro area for years, I can assure you I am speaking from having experienced authentic Nashville hot chicken many, many dozens of times. Nashville hot chicken is a fried-to-crispy-dry, cayenne pepper based flavoring that is applied and cooked into the chicken . The meat is a full half, bone-in chicken breast, not a boneless chicken meat section. The result is that Nashville hot chicken comes on the plate without without wet sauce. It has no vinegar tinging the taste and the cayenne pepper flavor roars its flavor off the hot, crusty chicken breast that remains incredibly juicy because it is deep fried into a sealed crust and the bone-in technique guarantees its moist juiciness. One trip to an authentic Nashville hot chicken place (notably Prince's Hot Chicken Shack, the mothership of Nashville hot chicken) will confirm these observations, which unfortunately has alluded this new chicken shop. I love chicken, so I am not trying to diss this new effort- but tag lining the restaurant to associate this chicken with Nashville hot is simply inaccurate. Examples of accurate attempts at energizing the Nashville Hot Chicken moniker include Hattie B's in Nashville, Howlin' Ray's out in LA and even Monroe's Hot chicken in Phoenix. Poor Mrs. Chicken is taking some heat right now. My experience was a good one though, particularly at the price point. I had the breast quarter meal hot with a side of red beans and rice. It did take about 15 minutes to get my food, which seems like a long time, but it came out piping hot. It was also incredibly spicy. I've been to Monroe's downtown a few times now and had their Level 4, and Mrs. Chicken's was substantially spicier - a good thing in my book. Though it was saucy, the crust retained some crunch, and the meat was still juicy inside. The Beans and Rice left a little something to be desired, but it came with the meal - can't complain too much. As noted earlier, especially at the $9 price point - got the chicken plus a side. Compare that to the $16 I'd pay at Monroe's, I'll definitely be back to Mrs. Chicken. Now, to all the folks righteously furious that they dare call this "Nashville Hot Chicken", go google Nashville Hot Chicken. A great number of the images that pop up look identical to the one I took of my lunch. I've never been to Nashville, I'll cop to that, but doesn't seem too different from what I see online, or what I tasted at Monroe's, which many say is "authentic". So I ended up in Nashville, TN while back and found out the rest of the world was already getting in on this Nashville hot chicken thing they have going on out there. I remember thinking how exceptionally tender and moist the chicken breast was. I mean it was spot on. I was also worried I was gonna sacrifice the level of heat by getting sandwich which was not true. Good size portion too. I also was able to try the tenders on 2 separate occasions. The first try they were huge! Also tender and moist. That was a good value but the second time around they were a lot smaller. Just as tasty though. I usually prefer bone-in wings over tenders given the choice but places like Mrs. Chicken force me to break out of old habits. Rightfully so because I don't regret that decision. I also tried the wings! Crispy and spicy! At this point I had tried the heat levels hot and hotxx. I saw a slight difference between them but for the wings we decided to go for mild. Well I didn't notice any difference between the mild and the hot. I'll be back, for sure, so hopefully I can dial in the heat levels a bit better. So happy we tried this place out!!! My husband and I were on a mission to find a new favorite hot chicken place after moving back to the valley from California and FIRST TIMES A CHARM! This place is amazing! We didn't know we could do a phone order so we ordered in store and waited about 30 minutes for our food. We both got the YardByrd sandwich and fries, one medium and one mild. As soon as we took a bite of our sandwiches we gave each other the "look"... you know the look you give each other when you realize "oh this is REAL GOOD". The first bite you see how fricken big the piece of chicken is. They're hefty, thick, juicy pieces!! The mild had a perfect amount of heat for me, it was definitely spicy but not too spicy. My husband who LOVES spicy thinks that the "medium" was more "mild". So if you can handle a LOT of spice you could definitely do medium or probably even hot!! The toppings were PERFECT. The mustard slaw was a perfect compliment to the sauce they put on it which is a delicious kind of vinegar-y sauce. I'd be doing them a disservice if I didn't update my review - since the original visit, I've seen pictures on social media that seemed to indicate a changed recipe, so I came in to try it again and am happy to report that it's no longer buffalo chicken and is more of a dry spice as expected with Nashville style hot chicken. The sides are still hit or miss, but the chicken is big, juicy, and flavorful and definitely good value compared to other places. The wait is much more manageable now and service is still great. All the food is cooked fresh to order, which you can see and hear through the pass window. The breading can be a bit thick, and more crunch than crisp, but the flavor and spice levels are done really well so it's more positive than negative. read more

I've been on a mission trying out hot chicken places for a while in Phoenix and i read about this place the first month moving out here back in 17' from Nashville, and from all the places i tried so far this place has the seasoning down, Monroe's uses a powder seasoning on top of the fresh fried chicken which is a cardinal sin in my book, you need to make your spices homogeneous in oil before putting it on the chicken. The only issues i had with the chicken was the breading and the lack of bread underneath the chicken to catch the oil so it didn't feel or look like i was eating out of a fry daddy. The breading on the chicken was reminiscent of a shake and bake since it was thin and not fluffy. Gotta give that point to Monroe's.
