Mr. Wonton is one of the last fixtures standing from the Park Slope of a generation ago, and we have been ordering from them for years--particular fans of the chicken & broccoli, ribs, and dumplings. But there is something special about coming into the restaurant itself on a cold winter night, a warm cave lit by hanging red lanterns, full of comfortable regulars and friendly staff. The waiter got my baby what she needed before she needed it: wonton sticks, a fortune cookie when she started crying for no reason at all (the best reason). A little girl-in-residence showed us her rainbow tower of giant Legos (several times!) The Platonic ideal of "neighborhood Chinese," which is to say: more sophisticated or extraordinary would destroy something. It's exactly right how it is. OK, I really have to agree with Bryan R. Don't fuck around in here if you're like a frog because it will make your stomach explode and want to kill you - but that's because the shit is so goddamn delicious!!! Most of the time, what happens is you smoke a ton of weed and ask your roommates, I'm thinking about calling my good friend....and then they get ALL EXCITED and say....DOES HIS NAME START WITH MISTER??? AND END WITH WONTON??? Little known fact, when you call and ask to speak to Mr. Wonton, sometimes he sounds like a black man. That's OK - we live in the greatest melting pot city in the world - Mr. Wonton could be purple for all I care, as long as he keeps cranking out these excellent pieces of General Tso's Bean Curd, very spicy, with scallion pancake. When you go there, you get crunchies with sauces and Hot Tea. The waiters are monuments of efficiency. They don't fuck around and know what you need when you need it. It's been almost 1 year since my last review of Mr. Wonton and I wanted to say that they came to my rescue just a few weeks ago. When I get a dumpling craving I'm like a ravenous beast! I really wanted dumplings from Number 1 Garden which is on the other side of Prospect Park and they wouldn't deliver! (sad face). So, I called Mr. Wonton, my trusty steed in Prospect Heights Chinese food, and they came to my rescue. What I love about this place is that they have chicken dumplings which can be a bit of a challenge to find, especially in my neighborhood where many of the Chinese spots have gated doors and bullet proof glass (classy I know). Mr. Wonton is a cozy neighborhood eatery, their delivery and take out is quick. Reasonable prices and I've never had a problem with my order or service. The only negative thing I have to say about Mr. Wonton is, they skimp on the duck sauce, napkins and plastiwear in your delivery package. Old school Chinese that reminds me of my NYC childhood before the Thai restaurant takeover. Egg rolls are amazing as are the pork dumplings. All the main courses are excellent, but I stick with classics: chicken & Broccoli or moo shu pork. Not sure why it's only 3 1/2 stars, the place is a winner! read more

Some of the best boneless spare ribs I've ever had. They were the perfect texture and flavor. Crispy tasty wantons. The general tso was really tasty and flavorful. They cut a carrot into the shape of a flower. You can tell they care about the food they're serving you. Really fresh broccoli. Scallion pancakes were great too. The service was really really good. Very attentive and personable. They must have filled my water up like five times. The food was ready very quickly too and all of it tasted really fresh and good. The hot mustard was thicker that the watery stuff you find a lot of places - which means it's hot. And delicious. The place seemed really clean and the decor was nice. The value was awesome too. I didn't get the chance to meet Mr. Wonton (and google image seaching "mr. wonton" proved to be very dissapointing), but the waiters and waitresses I did meet were extremely friendly and efficient. My boyfriend shared fantail shrimp and fried shrimp dumplings and a vegetable egg roll. The vegetable egg roll was the best I've had in a Chinese Restaurant. The vegetable fried rice I ordered as my entree was awesome, but I was so full from the appetizers that I took it home and had it for dinner the subsequent nights. I definitely recommend this place. Mr Wonton is a very solid joint for American Chinese food. I have never been there, only got delivery (one of the fundamental pillars of American Chinese food). Fine prices, ok delivery time, and exactly what you expect taste-wise. Of course, there is no reason to compare the food here to Chinese Chinese food. This is not a stall in a food court under a mall in Flushing. The menu is in English and you can understand the person that answers the phone. If you don't want that, look for a place that does Chinese Chinese; if you want tasty scallion pancake, broccoli beef, and anything General Tso, Mr Wonton is a great stop. read more

Mr. Wonton is the first place in the area I've tried that I can actually say has good Chinese food. I am not Chinese, but believe me, I can eat Chinese food like a motherf*cker and have been doing so for decades, so I feel qualified to judge it. I've been living in Park Slope for less than 6 months and have been shocked at the absence of really good Chinese spots, for dining in or take out. It's sad, really. I've tried Red & Hot II, Hunan Delight, and some other spot that I don't recall the name of, and none of them were as good as Mr. Wonton. I've only had delivery, but everything I've eaten has been pretty spot on. Everything from the likes of chicken or beef w/ broccoli, chow fun, general tso's, moo shu, scallion pancakes, dumplings, h&s soup, and pan fried noodles were all very tasty. The flavors are right, the portions are impressive, the ingredients are fresh, and the final product has never seemed overly oily or MSG-riddled. What's more, the folks on the phone have their shit together and can communicate effectively, and the delivery times are generally quick. They also give you a pretty accurate estimate of how long it's going to take, which I appreciate. Overall, highly recommended for the area. In my estimation, it's about as good as it gets in the Slope. If you feel otherwise, or have other suggestions, feel free to hit me up...I'm always on the lookout! read more

Anyone who's tried to get good Chinese delivered should know that this is _not_ totally standard Chinese food. It is standard Chinese done well for a good price. I was happy as hell to discover Mr. Wonton. I live in Carroll Gardens but wait the few extra minutes for delivery. In a sense Mr. Wonton is what every corner Chinese joint should be. The food is tasty, it is freshly made, the vegetables are good, and it doesn't feel like you're eating anything terribly unhealthy. Mr. Wonton won me over for the fact they will deliver to Carroll Gardens, where there is suprisingly no good Chinese delivery places around. For some reason its hard to find good Chinese in Brooklyn, and nothing really compares to what you can get in Chinatown (I wish Nice Green Bo delivered all over the city) but this place is decent and has everything you could want on the menu. Prices are reasonable and they don't screw up the order (one of my pet peeves about delivery, they always forget something you've ordered and charge you, but don't usually throw something in extra for free..why does that never happen?!). Chinese food to me always seems like a crapshoot. You stick to the places you know that deliver consistently or else you wind up with the most horrific stomach ache and don't stop burping for days. I LOVE Mr. Wonton. It's a tradition that whenever I have a car, I will drive to Park Slope from Williamsburg, specifically to eat at this restaurant. Vegetarian General Tso's chicken? Yes, please! It is always cooked to perfection, with just the right amount of crunchiness. Also, you don't feel hungry 20 minutes after you eat here, which is truly a sign to me, that the food is of a high quality. When they say no MSG here, I actually believe it. Additionally, the service is always fast, and friendly. Your water glass never goes unfilled, and you are offered hot tea, and crispy noodles with duck sauce the moment you sit down. We have two small daughters and the ladies at Mr. Wonton are helping to raise them. It's an unassuming Chinese place and it doesn't have the culinary flair of Grand Sichuan or something like that, but they couldn't be more friendly and accommodating and the food is actually really good. The place and name are cute, but the wonton soup is certainly not the best I've ever had (sometimes too doughy, sometimes overcooked). The lunch special--which includes soup and a variety of choices, with no extra cost for seafood-- is a great deal. All the dishes I've had here have been hot and teeming with vegetables, although some are too heavy on the sauce, msg, and cornstarch. One of the house special dishes I tried with steak and shrimp was tasty and aesthetically pleasing. The only downside to this place when dining in is that it is crawling with kids under five and otherwise loud people. The solution to that issue, though is not delivery, because it takes an unduly long time and arrives swimming in an ungodly amount of grease. read more

Been coming here for lunch for about 5 years. Most of the food is great. Love the sauce and rice options (ie chicken broccoli w. White sauce). I've been ordering the house chow fun for a while. The pork that comes with it is so salty. Also very hard. Guess it's the way the preserved it. Not to my liking but I'm just one person. Don't get me wrong, I like the food here. Great and cheap. But this place is a Lil dirty. I have things floating in my water, my cup has 3 different shares of lipstick, the rag they use to wipe the tables makes the place stink. I'm a Chinese American living in Prospect Heights, and Mr. Wonton is the only decent Chinese food I've found in my area. They are a definite step up from the takeout-only Chinese restaurants, which I don't trust, without being yuppie "fusion" whatever. Overall, the food is VERY decent. Specifically, I recommend: Pork buns (cha shao bao) Xiao long dumplings Eggplant (yu xiang qie zi) Of course, it's all relative. Wonton was better than anticipated. With so many good food choices within a 6 block radius, Wonton holds up fairly well. Had a BBQ pork noodle soup that had fresh veggies, hunks of pork and egg noodles and a better than average broth. Ordered some baked pork buns and was surprised how fresh they tasted even on late Sunday night. Ordered the tired and boring Beef and Broccoli, and even that was completely unoffensive. This is a very solid Chinese-American joint. It will please fans of Empire Szechuan and Hunan Palace. The shrimp with Chinese broccoli is particularly delicious, as is the eggplant with garlic sauce. I was on a search mission for some Chinese food. I am new to working in the area. I have found many cute little spots and this is one of them. I had a staple for me, broccoli with garlic sauce. I would have ventured for the vegetarian meat but since there is none on the lunch special. For all you vegetarians out there, verify what is made with chicken broth and what is not. The service was adequate. I have been there twice already and the service seems to depend on the server. One server seemed clueless but the other was very nice and good. The first time I went there I was on a time constraint. They are very fast. I was in and out in 15 min. ( I was in such a hurry that I had forgotten my yoga mat there. When I'm in the mood for Chinese, but not the average takeout Chinese that you can get pretty much anywhere, I hit up Mr. Wonton. You start out with some wonderful hot tea, a real nice perk. This is served in a carafe type thing, there's plenty of it there. Then the waiter comes to your table and takes your order (like a real restaurant) and comes back later with it on real tableware, not in Styrofoam containers. This is it...our favorite Chinese restaurant. The fact that we're Park Slopers, and can walk to Mr. Wonton, is definitely a plus. But even if we had to drive there, we'd still be there when in the mood for Chinese food. The place is really pleasant, nice to walk into, the service is super -- one waitress in particular is friendly, accommodating and fast, but we've really never had problems with any server -- and even the restrooms are clean! (Yes, I'm weird, but I've found that well-kept and clean restrooms usually equate to quality food and service as well. It means that the management cares...) And the food here is simply terrific! I won't even single out particular dishes, because we range all over the menu, and have never had anything here that was less than terrific. And the food presentation is usually lovely as well. I never throw away food. Never. In school I was the one eating my friends' leftovers off their trays. I don't throw out leftovers unless they physically attack me when I open the fridge. This is because I am both a cheapskate and someone who can appreciate bad food as food on a completely separate level from good food. Mr. Wonton changed all that. I like to say that I'll try anything thrice, but Mr. Wonton was bad enough the first time to make me stay away forever. I ordered a tofu stir-fry, which, thinking about it, should be incredibly difficult to screw up, assuming you like tofu. Stir-frying is literally just throwing delicious things in a wok and frying it; the only way to not have it end up at least mediocre is if you literally toss poop in there. But somehow, Mr. Wonton found a way. I choked down one serving, but when the time came to put it in the fridge, I helplessly found myself walking to the garbage can instead. After a moment of hesitation, fighting years of contrary behavior, I tossed it in, and walked away feeling the distinct urge to flush. Never again. read more

I thought the food was delicious and the service was attentive, which if you've read my other NY reviews I have abstained from commenting on service because of the stereotypical NY indifference to attention and service. This review is solely based on the take out food that we ordered and not the restaurant itself. We decided to get some take out last night. I was surprised that Mr. Wonton delivers to Clinton Hill, so that was plus. We ordered some egg rolls, wonton soup, Pork Lo Mein and the chef's specialty, Hot Lover's Chicken. That consists of deep fried chicken sauteed with snowpeas baby corn, straw mushroom in spicy garlic sauce. The Lo Mein was a bit flavorless and the soup was normal nothing really to special about it. The eggrolls on the other hand were EXTREMELY salty. It was nearly unedible. My friend told me that Mr. Wonton is either hit or miss. This time is was a big miss. The Hot Lover's Chicken tasted like a typical General Tso's, only with mushrooms and baby corn. The food wasn't the best, but it hit the spot. read more

If you want something slightly healthier tasting, go with Hunan Garden on 6th and Union If you haven't eaten all day and are just coming home from work at 11pm and order their General Tso's combo platter that comes with fried rice, wonton soup, and an egg roll, and ALSO order scallion pancakes to make the $10 delivery minimum, be VERY VERY cautious. If you are like a frog and have no biological concept of the feeling of FULLNESS before it's too late, immediately put half of the food in the fridge, or you will REGRET IT!!! I learned the hard way. Mr. Wonton is like a box of chocolates: You NEVER know what you're going to get! Today I ordered chicken with cashews, which showed up with peanuts in it instead. Last time I ordered the crispy scallops and they sent shrimp. Another time I got chicken with broccoli instead of the chicken and eggplant I ordered. When they're out of something, they have no problem substituting whatever they feel like without even telling you. It's too bad, because Mr. Wonton's food is a good deal better than the other cheap Chinese delivery places in the neighborhood.
