The tug of nostalgia is an intensely powerful thing. 'Cause I don't know how else to explain why I stopped in here for lunch recently ish with the kid: To back up for a second, hubby and I used to live on the same block as this place. I have fond memories from that time of enjoying the occasional Lunch Special from Mr. Wonton, especially the Chicken with Broccoli. Thus, when the kid and I were walking along 7th Avenue ISO sustenance, I gave in to my sentimental impulses. Anyway, of course, we got the Lunch Special, which has inched up to $7.25 from the $5 or so that I remember for your choice of Soup or Soda with a select Entree. Was happy to discover they were still serving gratis Crispy Noodle Thingies, aka Fried Wonton Strips with Sweet 'n Sour Sauce for dipping. They're nothing I'd ever conceive of snacking on at home, but somehow they taste delicious here. Both the kid and I went with Hot & Sour Soup to start. Was comforted to taste the same familiar vinegary, peppery, viscous broth from my memories, bordering on goopiness and full of not entirely distinguishable, but tasty meaty bits. But then our entrees arrived. Now, you know I ordered me some Chicken with Broccoli. And well, the Chicken was tender, if a bit gristly, but it turned out to be the Broccoli that was this dish's undoing. It was drowning in oil that tasted like it had been reused 1000x over. I may never be able to eat Broccoli again.:( My poor, misguided kid had ordered Pepper Steak, thinking that 'Pepper' meant Black Pepper. He wound up with Green Pepper instead, which he hates, and lots of it. He picked out what little Steak there was and left the rest on his plate. Service was very sweet and it gave me a bit of of a rush to set foot in here again. But sadly, I doubt I'll ever return. read more

What a bummer :( was hoping this would be the tasty greasy local Chinese spot (just moved to the area) and boy was I disappointed. I couldn't even eat it. As soon as I went to bite into the sesame chicken, my teeth hit COLD CHICKEN. Upon further inspection, I realized the rice had been heated up but the chicken was cold to the touch. Seriously, why have I not been ordering from here due years? Delicious vegetable rolls with light wrapper and little grease. Beef with broccoli delicious - lean beef with fresh begs. Best duck ever!!! We travelled to Hong Kong in search of better. It's so consistently amazing. We take all of our friends and family there and they are always super impressed and they come back for more as often as possible. We order from Seamless and we always know it's going to arrive because they deliver themselves. I visit and order from Mr. Wonton VERY frequently since I work in the area. It's a family owned business and everyone is always so pleasant and courteous. When I'm there I feel as if a chair is being extended to me at the family table as opposed to just being a customer. I was at Mr. Wonton just last week on a pretty cold day. One of the gentlemen saw me rubbing my hands together trying to warm up, and without even saying anything, they brought me a pot of hot tea. Not only was I physically warm, but the kind gesture warmed my heart as well! I love that there's a nice selection of delicious vegan options and the food is consistently delicious! Best spicy vegetable wontons I've ever eaten! Been my favorite for years. So spicy and so delicious. I've even had some of my friends get hooked too. My favorite local joint! They are reliable, speedy, and delicious. My favorite appetizer is the spicy veggie wontons -- they're smothered in spicy peanut sesame sauce and are to die for. Their soups (try the wonton soup!) are perfect for a rainy day. I love their house special/ Yang Chow fried rice (white rice, not brown), bean curd dishes, and mei fun (vermicelli noodles). Pan fried pork dumplings are juicy and chewy. Amazing vegetarian options too-- fresh veggies that are cooked just right and lots of soy-based meat alternatives. Prices are extremely reasonable especially if you get their lunch special (around $9/10 for entree, soup, and side.) If you dine in the servers are so nice and work hard make sure you have a good experience. I will say if you're ordering takeout during the holidays, make sure to plan accordingly and call ahead because it may be particularly busy. Definitely try it out you will not regret it! read more

I ordered the seafood wonton soup and it was delicious! My new favorite. We also had seafood mei fun, shrimp fried rice and shrimp with vegetables. Everything was delicious and even though I live a bit far everything arrived very warm. I enjoy eating in the restaurant but when you can't go out it shouldn't stop one from eating well. I had skipped by Mr. Wonton many times. Something seemed wrong to me. Normally a name like Mr. Wonton is a good sign in Chinese dining...it shows me the owners have some pride and want to stand out from their Chinese-food-as-a-commodity brethren. And I had a vague memory of mixed reviews on Yelp. But we are in an era of CHANGE and so on a freezing afternoon I decided some soup sounded good and gave Mr. Wonton his shot. Mr. Wonton has been underloved. Now let's be honest. The food is a bit too sweet and a bit too breaded. It is Americanized-Chinese food in Brooklyn for gods-sake. But the Mister has a few solid things going for it: 1) Quantity: The lunch specials are huge. Maybe the same size as the dinner order. 2) Care: There is an focused quality to what is put on the plate. The General Tao's Chicken I had was pretty damn sweet and armor-plated with breading....but not over-soaked in sauce, the broccoli was not gross, and each chunk of chicken had its own dignity. 3) Wonton Soup: I can't remember the last time I had such a flavorful wonton in a cheap Chinese place like this. Rather than blandly-sweet pork in a doughy wrap, the Mister serves up a seasoned pork explosion in a doughy wrap. The broth is decent, not great, but adds to the experience on a whole. The soup is worth the trip alone. The service was attentive but minimal. That was fine. They make an effort to highlight their vegetarian options, which I didn't try but I know just being there will make some vegans more comfortable eating at the place. At the end of the day I feel like Ameri-Chinese food is best judged on the basics...wonton soup, egg rolls, and dished like x and broccoli/general Tao's x. Mr. Wonton gave a solid performance, just don't expect fine dinning. Solid 3 stars. You might even round up one if you want to handicap for it being in Brooklyn. read more

First of all their steamed dumplings is the best! Also cheese wontons are super delicious. I've not had usually good experience with these appetizers. I was thrilled when I tried it here. I loved that the place is neat and tidy. I was a little bit disappointed when I ordered "sesame chicken with fried rice". They put in my takeout regular chicken with broccoli with vegetables and made it so spicy. (By the way, I HAD chicken with broccoli in my order so it was disappointed to get another one) I ordered through the phone, and I truly believe that I repeated several times my order! Next time I will check carefully. Chicken with broccoli was also pretty tasty. But fried rice wasn't so good. There is another place who makes insane fried rice with vegetables. Mr Wonton has been a Park Slope staple for sometime. So I should probably give it a review. Park Slope and some of it's neigboring hoods, have a lack of really good Chinese restaurants. Mr Wonton is the restaurant that is a slight drop above your favorite run of the mill Chinese take out spot, but nothing overly amazing. So it just gets that four stars. What puts it over the top, is it really is a true sit down restaurant. I wouldn't order or pick up from here, I'd actually sit down to eat here. Located right on 7th and Berkley, you have some nice window seats to look outside while you dine. The staff is friendly and the food is made fast. It's solid and for a sit down spot, it's pretty cheap. So if you've got a hunger for Chinese food in the downtown Brooklyn area, but don't want take out from the random take out spot and want to sit down while not paying too much, this is a good spot. read more

A mild, clean flavor broth with deliciously rich, chewy, yummy flavorful won tons swimming in it, a perfect pairing to the subtle broth's simplicity! Sooo good. Mr. Wonton's star has faded! I've only been in the neighborhood for 1.5 years, and in that time, something has changed. He was mysteriously compelled to activate that illuminating wonton sign on the sidewalk, the light in the dining room got brighter; what was once a welcoming and warm room is no more -- it's sterile and bright these days but none of that really matters. What matter is only the food: it's not very good! The prices are higher than the places on Flatbush; those sacrifice any ambience for a cheaper price point. I had drifted to the competition: Szechuan Delight, Hunan Delight; a 3 way tie for last. Autumn Asian on Flatbush won; great food, great value. But my fiancée thought we were a Wonton family, and so once again on Sunday I gave him a shot. And he failed!!!! Your WONTON soup, Mr. Wonton, your name-sake is pitiful! Before I picked up my to-go order, I spoke to the woman on the phone noting that last I checked, there were only two (unexceptional, over-boiled) wontons in a broth made without those little pork bits, and without love. I asked her to ensure it was a good soup -- she assured me that there are always three wontons in a small. For real, three? Autumn Asian, by comparison shoves at least 5 wontons into their 'small' soup. The pork fried rice is nothing of childhood memory, the general tso's moist but without texture, no crunch to enliven. Food is fresh and delicious. I ordered chicken broccoli with fried rice, although the rice doesn't seem fried as it is white in certain places & there's no egg in it. Still delicious. GO TO HUNAN DELIGHT INSTEAD. Has been one of our go-tos since being in Park Slope, and they even know us, but their customer service has dropped dramatically lately and tonight was the last straw. Placed our usual order for delivery and received fairly quickly. Delivery man didn't have change to break our money though, strike one. We open the order for the group and our two large fried rice were missing. We call and they go, "you for sure said dumplings, we can bring you rice but that's 15.75." I told them I didn't, why would I have said "large" if I ordered dumplings (which no one wats in our group in the first place), and that everyone heard me say what I ordered. It's besides the point but he then said "okay, well we can bring you rice but we need the dumplings back and five dollars." What?! Who are you going to give those dumplings to?! It was just shocking when he eventually acknowledged his mistake but was adamant on charging us and taking our food away. I said I wanted nothing because people were now having to wait to even eat and that I would go elsewhere, and all he said was "that's fine *hangs up*" I would be highly suspect that you're receiving food they gave to someone else going forward if I were ever to go back. read more

Mr Wonton might have slightly higher prices but the food is worth the extra $$. It's more refined than your typical Chinese food delivery and has a lot of options for both meat and non meat eaters. I'm addicted to their Vegetarian General Tso's - tofu...it has a crispy coating that makes you feel like you're eating the real thing!
