I haven't been here during the weekend yet, but most weekdays in the evenings the wait time is no more than 5 minutes and the staff is pretty friendly. Oof, I feel bad leaving a 3 stars review since they're still in the soft opening phase. However, I can't convince myself to give them a 4 star since 3 is already me being lenient. The service was...hm...needs more improvement. Apparently they open at 3, we got there at 3:06 and we were the 9th customer according to the receipt. There was only 3 other groups in store (waiting to order/for their drink) before us. However, we waited 30 minutes to receive one drink. That's excluding the waiting time to order. I might be spoiled by the recent boba shops that has opened in the area, but 30 minutes wait to receive the drink AFTER ordering is a bit too long. We were expecting a short wait since there was barely a line in store, so getting hit with that 30 minutes wait was unexpected. It would have been nice to get a warning. (I ordered in person with the cashier). They only have 3 staffs working in store, so it is understandable considering that they're still working out the kinks in terms of speed and service. The store entrance(s) were confusing too. I wasn't the only one trying to pull open the locked doors. As for the drink, I was a bit disappointed. I got the Mr. Sun Mango. I usually prefer chewy boba over soft boba, but their boba was too hard (not QQ/bouncy) and there were no hint of mango at all. The milk slush was a bit flavorless toward the end once the mango syrup ran out. I've tried the drinks at other Mr. Sun locations and they've all been great, so the drink I got today was below my expectation. However, the texture is not as firm. 2 days ago, the boba was firm and chunky squarish, not round. It could be I was drinking it after an hour or so (Had to pick up someone from hospital) so the texture might have soften. That softened texture become just like any boba. Brand new to Mountain View, this is probably my new favorite boba tea shop. Conveniently located on the corner of El Camino and Castro, there is plenty of parking behind the building in surface parking and more so in the garage. The key differentiator at Mr. Sun is their freshly made flavored boba: unlike the flavored popping boba found at your average commoner boba shop, Mr. Sun has flavored chewy boba! The brown sugar and strawberry boba were both great, and I am looking forward to trying more. For a classic experience try the Golden Brown Sugar Boba Milk Tea. It has a great strong tea flavor, mixed with the brown sugar flavor, and perfectly soft, sweet, and chewy boba. The rainbow boba has a bit of everything, mango, strawberry, and brown sugar boba, if you're looking for variety. I did find that I preferred trying each flavor one at a time, rather than in the rainbow boba drink, to really let them stand out and avoid mixing them up too much. When you're on Castro Street, you have a lot of options for boba. My colleagues and I fancy ourselves on trying ALL the boba places and even though this one was a little out of our way, we drove to Mr. Sun on a way back from an errand. Parking is a little tight; there's not much near the stores but you can go into the nearby parking lot and find more retail parking downstairs. We went on a pretty cold day and were eager to get inside the warmth of the place. Unfortunately, we didn't realize it was a soft opening and didn't realize we couldn't go in! We scanned the QR code to order but some of the descriptions were unclear. We couldn't tell if the "Golden Brown Sugar Boba Milk Tea" had BOBA in it or not. There was an option to add boba on it so we decided to just get it (the order was for a friend waiting back at the office and we had a feeling he would be extra le sad if we showed up with a boba milk tea...without boba). There was some other questions on some of the drinks but because everything was online, it made it really difficult to order. We persisted and got our order. Lots of confusion of going in and not going in. During one of the deliveries (they come to the door and hand you your drinks), the door was left ajar and people decided to go inside (which I think they were trying to prevent). I felt bad for the employees inside but the signage IS a little unclear (as is much of the communication around this place). My friend and I ended up waiting outside, cold, and eager to get back to the warmth of the car. Drinks took about 10 minutes to come out (which I feel like is a bit long?). While we waited, a woman came up and asked why we couldn't go inside and we pointed to the QR code. She was really frustrated; she explained that she was so excited for this new place and really bummed to find out she couldn't go in because she has VERY specific boba requirements. We nodded sympathetically but we were in the same boat. My boba was pretty good; I had an osmanthus oolong milk tea with boba! My friend had the mango smoothie and she liked it, although she wished she could order boba with it. Sadly, my friend that had the boba-or-no-boba tea (Golden Brown Sugar Boba Milk Tea) did not like his...and ended up tossing it. He said it just didn't taste very good. We stopped in here today on our way out of town - and I know we're in a labor shortage, but our experience was kind of crazy. The place has a fun vibe and was busy during the whole time we were there. I ordered online via the QR code on the window and waited nearby, and they seemed to start making my drink. Then, suddenly, they put my half-made drink on a shelf for a while and seemed to forget about it. While I was waiting I saw two different customers return to say that their drinks were incorrect. One was totally the wrong drink and one had been made with no sugar at all. BOTH TIMES the person working was like, "Haha oh man", clearly having no idea what to do, and then just turned to face away from them? And the customers had to just slowly walk away confused? My friends and I were just shocked watching that happen. After about 20 minutes I finally asked if the half-made one was my drink, and she said "Oh yeah..." and poured the other half on top and gave it to me. Mr Sun is one of the best boba places in the area. I came here during the first couple weeks of opening and would have given it 5 stars then, but sadly it's gone downhill. This location is the most convenient for me to get to, so I come pretty often (at least 2-3x a month, more if you include DoorDash), but unfortunately it is sooooo hit or miss. The good: -the drinks are good. Sometimes I have issues where the drinks are inconsistently made (mostly my 0-50% sugar is made at like 1000% sugar lol), but overall the drinks are good. The bad: -boba sometimes isn't fresh. I've come at various times with varying degrees of freshness so I can't exactly pinpoint a time not to come. Once it was super obvious my boba was old bc it was so chewy and coagulated -they are out of toppings more often than not -they are almost always behind/slow This isn't the fault of the workers, but I think they're severely understaffed. Every time I come, the workers just look exhausted from running around trying to make drinks -there is little to no customer service, maybe bc the workers are too busy trying to make drinks This place is super hit or miss, but honestly the drink quality is top tier. Summary: Favorite boba spot based on the boba What I got: I've been here twice. I got the brown sugar boba the first time. The milk tea part is standard but the boba was outstanding! I got a combo of mango, strawberry and regular boba. I was pretty sure I was not going to like it but figured why not. Such a good choice! The boba is flavorful but now overpowering so it can really be mixed and matched with a lot of different teas. The boba here vs. boba at other places (teaspoon, boba guys etc) is like the difference between eating fresh pasta vs. dry grocery pasta. You can really tell it is hand made. It is so chewy. I just love it. The second time I got the weekend special boba (peach) and oolong tea. Again the tea is standard. But tbh I've never truly felt the milk tea was that different between the big boba chains. The boba once again was amazing! Other thoughts: I haven't had time to look back at the reviews but I don't know why it is so low. The low reviews made me hesitant to try it out but we were in the area so I figured I should. Tried hot milk taro boba. While there was a decent amount of taro chunks and boba at the bottom, the drink had absolutely no taro flavor. It was literally hot milk with stuff at the bottom. Even after stirring, still, the milk tasted like....milk. My suggestion would be to use some taro powder in addition to the real taro to impart some resemblance of flavor to the drink.
