Mr. Habanero - Mercado 28, Cancun Visit Date: August 5, 2025 Tourist trap - skip it. We came for lunch as a group of 10 (6 adults, 4 kids) and left unimpressed. The good: Seafood ceviche was fresh and tasty. If you specifically order a live fish to be cooked, you'll probably have a decent meal. The bad: Guacamole was bland. How do you mess that up in Mexico? Fish taco: heavily breaded, low quality, tasted like filler. Shrimp taco: equally disappointing. Mariachi band roams tables and charges $12 USD per performance. Fun for a birthday, but be prepared. Shady service warning: The bill included tips (propina) and what appeared to be a service charge. However, the server insisted that tip on the bill wasn't included for him, only for the kitchen staff, and demanded a cash tip. Felt pushy and uncomfortable. Bottom line: There are better, more authentic places to eat in Cancun. Look for real local spots and skip this tourist-targeted place unless you're going specifically for the live fish. read more

Seafood tostadas left me wanting something else. Food was ok, and left me wanting more spice. They cater more towards tourists, and you can tell. Our servicer was very kind and attentive. He has such a happy and positive personality that his coworkers who passed by to offer more drinks laughed and said "yeah, he's like this all the time! He's so happy". We started the day making the trip to market 28 and on the walk over this restaurant was recommended so we decided to stop in. The Ambiance is nice because the restaurant has AC and really helped cool us down after the walk over. The service was very good and they made sure we were always fully attended too. The food was good. Not great but good. I ordered the chilaquiles and it was good. I got scrabbled eggs, bacon, and beef mixed in. The chilaquiles was not spicy but was very flavorful. My wife got the mole poblano and again it was good. My daughter got scrambled eggs with bacon and potatoes and refried black beans on the side. This came with tortillas to make tacos. Lastly the food came out warm and I like my food to come out hot. This was a miss in my opinion. Overall very nice place to enjoy a quick bite and cool off while at the Market 28. read more

Our server was very attentive and helpful in suggesting what to order. We shared a taco meal that had 3 different choices and we decided on 2 beef and 1 chicken. It was big enough for us to share and we had to request additional flour tortillas but it was plentiful. The owner/manager was a huge dick. The food was pretty good, probably not enough to make up for his personality though, lol Anyway, we started with shrimp ceviche and chips & guac. Both were excellent. Then we got tacos because well, we're in mexico, duh. The beef tacos were excellent but the fish tacos sucked. As for the manager, we asked him before we came in if they took credit card. He said yes, so we came in. After the meal, he kept insisting we pay in cash (which we already told him we didn't have). I have been meaning to review this place but for some odd reason I couldn't remember the name of the restaurant. I am surprised at how many bad reviews have been written as it was one of my absolute favorite places that I had the pleasure to stop by when I visited Mexico earlier this year. The service was beyond amazing! To start off, the mariachi was about to leave, but when we asked if they could sing for us they were happy to do so! With no hesitation, they ended up singing two songs for us (which we picked ourselves). Our sever was remarkable from beginning to end and went above and beyond to give us the best experience possible. Even at the end when they apparently didn't have change for the amount of money we had given them totally not a huge deal though. Our Tacos al Pastor were great, our margaritas were fresh, delicious guacamole, and at one point the server even went inside without us having to ask and brought each one of us a sombrero for pictures! (Mind you we were a group of 5 girls). Truly thankful for how he treated us and kept us entertained the whole time. At the end I hadn't finished my margarita because it was huge, and without having to ask he went inside and gave me a cup with ice so that I could take it with me! Amazing! Went to Mr. Habanero for an early lunch mostly to get out of the sweltering heat after visiting Mercado 28. Let me tell you, best chips and salsa LITERALLY EVER. We ordered the huevos rancheros which was pretty good, but the winner here is for sure the red salsa that comes with your meal. (They have air conditioning and bathrooms!) read more

Is Mr. Habanero a tourist trap? Totally. But hey - I'm on vacation in Cancun, and I'm a tourist (so who am I to judge?). This restaurant is located right next to Cancun's infamous flea market (which is like Fisherman's Wharf on steroids). Pretty much all of the vendors and taxi drivers recommend Mr. Habanero (and I'm sure they're getting kick-backs). I will say this though - the food here is legit, and so is their Cadillac Margarita. Our table of three split three different tacos (the pork, the chicken, and the beef). It was more than enough food, and everything was cooked to perfection. They offer a few different salsas (red=spicy, green=mild, and pico de gallo) as well as fresh tortilla chips. Service is friendly. They clearly know how to cater to tourists. We fortunately got the check before the mariachis started playing. All in all, it was a good meal at a fairly decent price. And they accept credit cards. I would totally eat here again. read more

You can't help but stop and get some tasty tacos while shopping Marcado 28! This restaurant is located right outside the flea market near the parking lot. This place is perfect if you are looking for a quick place to eat before you go back shopping for more great finds! The restaurant is clean and the staff is very attentive and friendly. The menu offers an extensive option of different Mexican dishes. This place is a good spot for dinner as there are entertainers that come in and play music (don't forget to tip them). A mariachi band comes through several times singing and really gives the restaurant a lively feel. I ordered the (street tacos) 6 different tacos with steak and prawns. I paid 210 pesos for the 6 tacos. It took a while for my food to come out, but overall it was good. The portions are pretty big so be careful not to order too much food. The prices are reasonable. They also serve delicious cocktail drinks here as well. I didn't try any but they did look tasty. Most of the staff speak English so you shouldn't have any problem in communicating with staff. A bit of a tourist trap, Mr Habanero is located across from Mercado 28. As we exited our taxi we were flanked by 20 vendors and restaurant associates directing us to their stalls or shops. It was pretty overwhelming. We were hungry, so we ended up at Mr Habanero for lunch. Classic Mexican fare, fancy cocktails and well decorated interior. The waiters fought over who was going to wait on our table, so that was a bit odd. The food was yummy, everyone enjoyed the meals. Husband and I stopped here after shopping at Market 28 because we wanted a sit-down restaurant to relax, eat, chat, and use the bathroom. It was the BEST decision. If you go to Market 28, GO here afterward! The pico (or salsa) and guac is AMAZING to start with. I had the shrimp tacos and my husband had the fajitas. We could have NEVER finished them. The portions were huge and the shrimp tacos were the best I've ever had! They had a big selection of margaritas but I was paranoid about the water (ice in the margaritas) so we just got bottled drinks. Many people were getting the margaritas so maybe they were fine! Also, be careful when they try to charge you on credit card. Some bullshit about the exchange rate- MFer- it is of NO importance what MY bank charges ME- they tried to do the exchange rate calculation themselves. Check your receipt! They tried to add a $40 DOLLAR tip THEN said, if you'd like, you can leave me a tip. Nope. You tried too hard and didn't get shit for a tip when you tried to screw me. I visited this place in May and honestly wasn't impressed. The food was very sub par compared to other places that I tried while in Cancun. I thought the food was overly greasy and lacked some flavor. The drink was good and the customer service was excellent. Located in Mercado 28. Was decent food. I saw a lot of guacamole plates going back half full. They give you a very large portion of guacamole but it is thinned out quite a bit. My recommendation would be to keep it chunky and go with a smaller portion. I'm more about quality than quantity. I had 2 Micheladas. They were spot on. I also had a beef Chile relleno (165 pesos). It was huge. The sauce was a bit bland but all in all it was okay. The waiter was great. Spoke perfect English, was polite and informative. Here is the CON/ TRICK this combination is not on the menu, although one similar is on menu priced at 60 dollars but "Hector" brings out a large lobster and says does this look good and you are now trapped, BECAUSE HE BRINGS OUT A CHECK FOR 200 DOLLARS FOR JUST 4 PEOPLE, and says yes but you ordered a large lobster. All of us could have eaten a large lobster any place in the U.S. for $ 35 per peson with sides. Of course we only got 1 large lobster, 1 fish and 11 shrimp for $200 DOLLARS. The fajitas were good, dont expect a huge serving, but you won't leave hungry. My wife's cocktail was served a bit lukewarm and kinda of think (like syrup) we dis mention it and the manager was kind enough to remove it from the bill. Okey... the food was okey but this place is a scam! I came here with a group of 4 looking to spend maybe $20/person, took a look at the menu and the prices seemed okey. However, we were then offered the catch of the day platter, which included lobster, fish and shrimp. I asked the waiter to tell me how much it would cost, he told me if I order the bigger platter for 4 people it would be around $50-$60... I was okey with that. Them after finishing the meal, I get the receipt and it's $180!!!! Can't believe it! When asked for explanation, I was told that the lobster was a little heavier! How is that my problem!???
