This place is one of those hidden hole in a wall restaurants. On the outside of the restaurant, you can't tell there is a restaurant located there. It says Moxie. We were greeted when we walked in. The host was very delighted to see us. He was charming and funny. He was a character. He made our experience pleasant and fun. Oh, he also became our server too. The food was pretty good. The server told us about all the specials and it was a whole lot of specials. We tried some of their specials. A beef roll appetizer, caprese salad. I asked was the filet minion was, he explained a puff pastry with beef. When the beef roll came out, it was like beef egg roll or lumpia on a bed of mashed potatoes. It was not a puff pastry. I had it in my mind, that it was going to be like stew meat in a puff pastry. The roll itself was ok. I didn't really care for it. The Caprese salad was ok too. The tomatoes were not ripe. They were kind of hard and had no flavor to them. I order the fish special, sea bass. That was ok. The fish was good, but the piece was tiny. My husband really liked his seafood pasta. Overall, it was a good experience. This place was recommended by several of my friends so I had to check it out. I made a reservation. I called ahead and they called me back. I think it was the owner who called back. SO it's located right in downtown neighborhood. second from the corner. A yoga place is next door. It has an awning at the entrance. It's kind of hidden. There is street parking. We had to drive around a bit to find a spot but not too far at all. I came at just before 5:30 PM which is when my reservation was. They are supposed to open at 5 but the doors were locked. The owner came and opened the door and asked if I was David and said someone coming in had locked it. The owner was so nice and animated, so funny. I think his name is Adam, which another customer called out later. The place was empty except for the staff. Very dark in this place. Lots of old photos lined the walls. He sat us at a table about 3 tables in from the front door. Which is great because I hate being by the door. Adam said this was the Love table. Since we were a couple. There was a wall of all the liquor to our left , very long and a lot of liquor. He gave us a menu and said he would be back to tell us the specials. Another person brought us water and I had to check the place out. I was going to get up and walk around but Adam came right back. He said that in the back all of the phots were of people kissing and I could go there later. I never did though. Next time. I really couldn't tell how big the place was. I never got up. The menu wasn't that big , just one page. Adam went over the specials. OMG there were so many and every kind of fish and meat dishes. I couldn't remember them all. Way more than the menu. It was truly amazing that he could spout all of it out verbatim. I heard him do it again to tables that came in later. We started off with a ground up filet minion egg roll. The way he described it my wife thought it was going to be a flaky beef in a pastry but it was egg roll. I liked the flavor a lot but it had cilantro so the wife didn't. My wife wanted the caprices salad and they split it and gave us each a plate. It was just ok. My tomatoes were hard , still had fresh basil. I asked if he had Remy Martin and he did so I ordered it neat. It came back with a heated glass. Wow I haven't had it that way in a long time such nice customer service here. Each dish we had they cleared away the silverware to. Plus cleaned the table of crumbs. SO nice. I got the seafood pasta and wow. Lots of seafood. Big chunks of fish. All different kinds. Not over cooked and nice and cheesy. I loved it. It came with a huge basil plant on top . The wife got the sea bass and it was great tasting but kind of a small piece. Plus they put horseradish in the mashed potatoes which my wife didn't like. I didn't taste it at all but she did. The owner came back and told us the desserts. We got the carrot cake and it was really good. In house of course. We had such a nice time eating here at Moxie's. It wasn't cheap but quality isn't. This was a perfect evening for great food and service and a memorable ambiance. We could have been in our favorite Resturant in Chicago. And that was very fun. We went with another couple who previously had not dined at Moxie. They loved it and will be back. We ordered martinis and old fashioned cocktails that were perfectly made and served. We followed that with crabcakes and house salads. The crabcakes are the best some of us had ever had. Parking is available on the surrounding blocks with free street parking, which made it easy for our Valentine's date night. The restaurant has a definite "hole in the wall" charm, with only a couple dozen seats inside, creating a very intimate and romantic setting. It gives off an old-school vibe , they even checked my coat when we arrived, which was such a thoughtful touch and set the tone for the evening. After we were seated, we had a few minutes to look over their very small printed menu. Then Adam, the owner, came to our table to personally share all of the evening's specials. We weren't expecting so many! They've operated this way since opening, keeping a small core menu and verbally sharing specials, so just something to keep in mind when you visit. Adam has a great sense of humor and makes the ordering experience fun and engaging. Food & Drinks: We started by sharing the crab potstickers, which were incredibly flavorful and perfectly crisped. With a name like Moxie, I was immediately intrigued. We are so glad we finally tried this special place. Remember they are only open for dinner on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It is not a large restaurant so reservations are recommended. I called a few days prior to our desired date and time and left a voicemail message. I soon received confirmation from Adam. They have a small menu, but you have to listen carefully to all their daily specials. We shared crab cakes and Brussels sprouts salad. Both were quite tasty. The crab cakes were not overly flavored, but this allowed them to pair nicely with the trio of sauces. The salad was unusual. Made with the outer leaves of Brussels sprouts. We were both glad we tried it. My wife had the veal scallopini and I had veal piccata. Both entrees were very good with mashed potatoes and vegetables. We each had a glass of Argentinian Malbec which paired nicely with our meals. For desert we shared pecan cheesecake. This was delicious. This is a wonderful and friendly restaurant. Since it's within walking distance, I finally decided it was time to make a reservation. I'd heard it can get especially busy this time of year with graduations, so I called more than a month in advance. While they typically only take reservations two weeks out, they were happy to put my name down. When we arrived, the interior was just as charming as the photos I'd seen. A true hole-in-the-wall opens up into an intimate, warm, and dimly lit space. It feels like being transported to another era, though I can't quite articulate which one. We brought a bottle of wine, which was promptly corked, and the drinks started flowing. As others have mentioned, the owner personally comes to your table to check in and share the specials. I can understand why some people might find that style of ordering a bit jarring, but I found it charming and unique. We started with the grilled portobello mushrooms, which was a bit lackluster in truth. For my entrée, I went with one of the specials the owner mentioned--a Macadamia-Crusted Swordfish with Lobster Ravioli. My guest had the Spinach Ravioli as it was the only vegetarian option. Having never had swordfish before, I was amazed. It was meaty yet tender, with a perfectly seared crust and topped with a tomato-herb mixture and I believe a bit of chèvre, which all paired beautifully. The lobster ravioli was incredible--fresh, rich, and succulent. Everything on the plate worked together effortlessly. It was a standout dish. I tried the spinach ravioli as well, and it was also perfectly executed. We finished with a crème brûlée, our first time having one, and again, the bar was set high. It was creamy, delicious, and not overly sweet. Since we were celebrating a birthday, the owner kindly brought out a complimentary dessert: what I believe was a European-style hot drinking chocolate. It tasted like rich, melted dark chocolate--decadent and thoughtful. I can't deny that the bill was high, but the service is classic and attentive and the food speaks for itself. It absolutely felt worth it for a special occasion. I'd love to come back and sit further inside the restaurant next time--we were tucked in a cozy front corner near the door, which was intimate, but I'd love to be fully immersed in the inviting ambiance. Fantastic experience and an excellent choice for a celebration or if you just want to treat yourself. Go in with an open mind and try something off the specials menu. If ever you find yourself in the rare situation where nothing calls to you from the dinner menu, just ask for an entree you are craving and if the chef has the ingredients they will make it for you. Service is impeccable every night and the manager and owner is always walking around during dinner service entertaining guests and pouring wine. The dining room is quite dim and vintage with ornate decor. It is quiet cozy with very little space for large parties, but that makes it feel that more exclusive. A New York diner/bistro is in Sacramento. It's a wonderful place to enjoy a meal with friends. Some candid entertainment by the wait staff, is followed by a yummy meal you selected. The wine selection is good according to my buddies. They have two prices: Appetizers @ $18 dollars and entrees @ $36 each. The printed menu is very good, but the best is the vocal list provided by the waiter - a very long list of fish, shellfish, beef, pork, lamb and chicken. They will serve it any way you wish, provided the kitchen has the ingredients. Two of us had the sauteed Sea Bass, V had a seafood pasta, and S had the roasted pork loin in a wonderful brown sauce of some kind, It was the best meal on the table. He thinks he's entertaining but I can tell he's just bored. We all ordered specials and they were all lousy. The halibut was mushy. It was probably too old. The seafood pasta was like no seafood pasta I've ever had. A tasteless brown sauce with two shrimp that had no flavor. All the rest of the 'seafood' was most likely farm raised salmon. Everything I've read in prior reviews all ring true. I called and left a message and when the owner called me back for our reservation, I asked if they can accommodate gluten free since my wife is allergic to gluten. He said 90% of the menu can be made gluten free. Knowing what I know now, request ahead of time if you want a specific item to me made gf. Next time, we're going to request to have gf crab cakes since they could t be made gf when we were there. While he said they could accommodate for gf, not a lot could have been made gf on the spot. They did have a whole lot of gf options though so we were fine. The host was extremely friendly and really made us feel welcome. Having said that, he does run through the specials at an alarming rate, making you forget what he said almost instantly. The food: crab cakes were incredible. The short ribs were far and away the greatest thing I had here, maybe the greatest thing I've eaten in the last year. The caprese was delicious. The tables were set up, very cute with a little candle in the middle . It reminded me of a cute Italian restaurant, but the only thing it's not an Italian restaurant it's American. I believe everything was pretty clean and organized. We got greeted by the owner which he will be talking to you through the night. The menu only has certain options in it. The owner came back and told us a whole lot of specials that are not in the menu. I guess some people may like that he does that but, I would prefer to read it off the menu so I could really know what I want to get. It could be hard to remember everything he says, which is a lot. Another thing you don't know the prices of the things he's offering you verbally. The food was very delicious ! I enjoyed the food a lot. The dessert was very good as well. The drinks I ordered they were ok . There is no cocktail menu but if you tell the waiter, he will let you know what they have to offer. The food was very delicious. Overall, the food was good. Made a reservation two weeks earlier and we were greeted at the door as expected guests. It's hard to describe the service. The head waiter was amusingly assertive but helpful. The other waiter was attentive and low-key helpful. The list of specials (mostly fish dishes) were a level above the main fare and we all ordered the specials -- halibut, ahi, sea bass and lamb and all were VERY good. All dishes came out hot and well presented. The sides (vegetables and potatoes) were very good. We ordered gin and vodka martinis that were very good. Also ordered a crab appetizer that was very good. It was promised gluten free, but not sure about that, based on stomach issues later. The restaurant wall decor is a bit weird, like some attempt to look like an old Manhattan or SF North Beach restaurant with old Hollywood icon images. Also, the ambient music was a pretty weird mix of Euro- Spanish pop and blues rock. A more focused music background would be helpful. Try jazz. One would think that as the restaurant matures it would become a better version of itself, but no. I had forgotten the long recitations of the specials that no one can actually remember. I only could understand a couple of things he said. We ordered one of the appetizers. Some kind of mushroom wrapped in chicken monstrosity that had a weird lumpy white sauce. Sadly this was the best tasting dish of the night. We ordered our entrees I ordered the petite filet with scallop and prawns and my husband ordered the seafood pasta. The size of the steak was only slightly larger than the singular scallop that was sitting on top of it. The prawns were regular sized shrimp and to fill the plate there were green beans, baby carrots, red cabbage, and a piece of squash, everything was flavorless. I couldn't decide if the mashed potatoes were fresh or from a box since they tasted like horseradish. My husband's pasta looked gray but that could have been due the lack of lighting in the restaurant. He said it tasted "blah" and had a strange bitter taste. I absolutely LOVED our dinner here at Moxie. We ordered every appetizer on the menu including 2 that were not on the menu, but recommended by who I am assuming is the owner. Let's talk about service. I called to set reservations and they were very accommodating and kind. When I walked in, I was greeted warmly and seated right away. What I observed and loved was that the owner went to each table and was constantly making sure everyone in the establishment was happy/taken care of. He even gave us some chocolate desserts on the house. I can tell there is a love for food and creativity in the kitchen when it comes to this place. The lighting is romantic, candle lit. Food: portobello mushrooms were cooked perfectly and had good flavor, the Brussels sprouts Caesar was delicious--we couldn't stop talking about how simple, yet delicious it was because it wasn't the ordinary Caesar salad. The short ribs were too sweet for my taste buds, but they fell off the bone. The crab cakes were my absolute favorite. They were cooked perfectly and served with the best sauces to accompany the crab cake to make it feel like a different vibe with each bite. SO GOOD!! The grilled egg plant was delicious, like a caprese style. My second favorite of the evening was what I call the play on a shepards pie. It's like mini egg rolls with meat and veggies served ontop of mashed potatoes and gravy, it was Heavenly! For main entrees we got the ribeye steak (forgot a photo) which was cooked to perfection and the flavor profile was on point. Medium rare and came as just that--perfectly. The chicken Parmesan was delicious as well. I recommend visiting this restaurant if you haven't already. I will definitely be a frequent visitor here.
