I forget the name of the dish but they were all very tasty and with an amazing backstory to boot

Probably one of my most memorable and favorite dinner experiences was sitting at the bar and listening to the story of how each dish was created. Paired with nonalcoholic drinks for every dish. Worth the wait and going back soon!

For our fifth wedding anniversary, my husband and I came to Localis. I had been wanting to try Localis for years, so I was thrilled when the opportunity arose and we dined there for our anniversary. We managed to get one of the last seating reservations (not throwing my husband under the bus, but we did make the reservation very last minute), and I was blown away from start to finish. The service was impeccable with all of the wait staff being extremely kind, engaging and attentive. Their depth of knowledge of the dishes was phenomenal, but they presented it in a way that was approachable and not stuffy. The food speaks for itself. The particular menu we enjoyed was a journey to Osaka, Japan with dishes ranging from sushi and tempura to Ramen and Wagyu. Needless to say, we were both completely satisfied and left extremely full. It was truly a memorable dining experience, and I look forward to the opportunity to dine here again.

My dinner at Localis took place a few Saturdays ago for a special occassion and it did not disappoint. Sitting at the bar allows for a first-hand view of all the action in the open kitchen. Pre-pay for the dinner upon completion of the reservation. The 3 hour dinner included a "MC" who shared about each entree and its inspiration. The Japanese theme was inspired by the master chef's culinary trip to various cities across Japan. Some included traditional dishes, while many others included a fusion twist. Of the 10 courses, my favorites included the udon noodles in coffee broth, savory custard, and the octopus. All the staff was attentive, genuine, and friendly. I even received an actual phone call from their staff confirming my attendance and following up about any dietary restrictionss. I don't think I've talked to a live person in a long time before the actual experience. Restrooms were clean. Street parking only, but not too difficult. In the future when I dine here again is to pick an earlier time. The dinner started at 8pm and I didn't finish until almost 11pm. By the 8th course, I was tired and sleepy. That's more of a "me" thing. Overall, thank you Localis for a great and delicious night. #30/2025

We visited this restaurant for our anniversary dinner and it was a dinner we won't soon forget. Chef Chris is a master of his craft and it shows. From the exquisitely prepared dishes, inviting ambiance to the friendly and helpful staff, this restaurant checks off all the boxes. On this visit we had the Japan pt.2 dishes and they were DELICIOUS. This specific dinner was inspired by Chef Chris' trip to Japan. Each bite was masterfully prepared and Chef Chris gave an opening presentation on each one and why he chose to include it in this menu. Out of the 10 dishes, I don't think we were able to pick a favorite. They were all so good. Each dish was also paired with either wine or sake and complimented the taste of the dish. Overall, this place is gastronomy magic and once again, proves why they have a Michelin star. Give them a try. You will not be disappointed.

One word: DELICIOUS! For my birthday dinner this year, we decided to try localis. Right from the start--the accommodations, the staff being so welcoming, plus drinks we were delighted. Definitely made a birthday girl feel special. The food was amazing. I loved how they incorporated a story with their meal and brought you along for their journey. This month's journey was their trip to Japan! We were very stuffed by the end of it. We enjoyed our visit. Definitely would love to try again when the menu changes.

Three years ago, I described this restaurant as "Michelin-star worthy." They ended up getting that longed-for star, and the meal was so memorable I wanted to go back. It's a completely revamped menu; this 'season,' the focus is on Japanese cuisine, which, by its nature, is quite subtle. But Localis makes it lively and fun. Not every dish was a hit, and that's OK. They're trying new and wild things, and when a dish works, it shines. I loved the wagyu, the dumpling in a spicy broth, and a coffee dessert that rivals some of the best and most creative desserts in the country. I'm looking forward to seeing what the next menus are like. As for hospitality - both this and The Kitchen (the two Michelin-starred spots in Sacramento) have some of the best hospitality in the country. They're completely different, but they both make you feel at home. Pro tips: The counter is the best seating in the house. Dietary accommodations are well taken care of. The NA pairings are fantastic. And be nice to the chef. He's a cool guy.

The intrigue from first walking through the door of a Michelin star rated chef for the last five years, we were bit intimidated walking through the door. However, the experience was invigorating and exciting with every bite, as well were transported to another international land. The Chefs intention and build-up was like watching a suspenseful movie, and we were always on the edge of our seats. He was able to create an emotional connection with every course and show his love for his friends and family through the lens of food. Genius!!!

From the moment we walked in we felt welcomed and knew we could expect an exceptional level of service. We weren't disappointed. The food was highly creative and our palates were treated with a wide range of flavors - on their own and combined. The tasting pairing that accompanied the meal (for quite the additional fee) was excellent. From champagne, to wine, to beer and saki, this was also very creative. Chef Chris' presentation was unique. He had stories to tell about each dish and the person whom he had in mind when he created it. Our experience was at the bar, right in front of him and his team, so we also noticed that the team seemed to really enjoy their jobs and were passionate about the presentation of every dish. The only downside for us was that my wife unfortunately ate something that didn't agree with her earlier in the day, so her experience was cut short that night as she had to stop about half way through. We will have to return! Highly recommended if you want a very unique and "local" Sacramento experience (and have the budget).

Michelin star well deserved and rightfully so!! To say we enjoyed our experience at Localis would be an understatement. Absolutely loved every minute!! The staff was extremely attentive, Chef Chris would actually make time to do rounds on the tables (served us water and we didn't even KNOW he was the chef... shame on us), ambience was very classy, reservations were super easy, and smiles were on our face from start to finish. The only finicky part was the parking. Localis is in a residential area with adjacent 1 hr parking and some 2 hr walking curbs but we just couldn't figure out how to pay for the 2 hr spots. Took the risk of parking right out front with 1 hr signs and luckily no parking maids came around! Chef Chris changes his 10-course menus every 5 weeks (I think?). Our theme was "An Autobiography - Localis Familia Food Memories Menu." Staff would tell us their personal story behind the motivation for each dish and we would dive right in to each delicacy. Every single dish was so unique and every bite severely savory that sent us to the moon and back! And yes, I mean every.. single.. bite. Yum!! Reservations are simple via Tock (or their website) and yes you pay ahead of time, so we just booked the basic 10-course meal. However, it's not set in stone so don't stress out! Any additions can be made when you get there. My wife and I decided to add 1 drink pairing experience and shared it with each other. Now here's the kicker - there are 2 sections for seating. The Dining Room experience is more intimate, quieter, and table seating. On a special occasion or date? Go Dining Room. The Chef's Counter experience is more lively, fun, and ecstatic. Want to enjoy a tremendous Michelin course and a full on experience with the Chef? Go Chef's Counter. We did the Dining Room this round but definitely would love to experience Chef's Counter next time. This Michelin star gem is one of those never forget moments! Pricey but absolutely worth it. We'll try to make it a yearly thing at Localis - definitely fans of Chef Chris and his staff! Very highly recommended for all foodies enthusiasts near and far!

Amazing 5 star experience. Highly recommend you sit at the bar of the full experience. Chris was great and the entire staff was awesome.

Localis is a gem. I really, really, really love everything about their tasting menu experience. Their seasonal menu's are top tier and I'm always left feeling very full! Service is fun and interactive which adds depth the tasting menu experience. I've visited twice this year so far and hoping to be back again soon. If you're reading this review debating on booking reservations, just stop reading and book. Definitely reserve a counter seat because that's where all the action is at!

    Bridgette F.

My husband surprised me with an early birthday reservation and we had a lovely experience. You will need a reservation and their tasting courses will change to reflect specific experiences. When we went, each course was an autobiographical nod to the chef's life. You can tell how much thought went into every ingredient. We sat at the counter and loved how interactive our meal was. We got to chat with the chefs and see them at work. I also appreciated how they went above and beyond to accommodate my pescatarian diet as well as the fact that I was nearly 9 months pregnant and they made sure that each of my courses didn't miss a beat even if they had to deviate slightly. Same for our friend who is gluten free. I can't thank the staff and crew enough for such a wonderful and memorable evening.

    Celebrations menu.

The Standouts: * Oh my goodness get that octopus dish back in my mouth. Wow, I can't describe adequately the unique texture they were able to get on it, with a crispy exterior and tender interior. There was a generous helping of garlic sauce which came with it and the potatoes that were on the side were also fantastic. Easily the best dish of the night. * The Ravioli was also delicious. It comes with a herby, earthy pesto on top and a delightful balance of cheese filling. * Lovely selection of Italian drinks including alcoholic and NA options * Interesting bruschetta flight - 4 pieces of toast each with a different type of topping. The onion Jam and pesto ones stood out to me. The Improvement Points: * The AC was not working very well when we were there. It got pretty toasty in the dining room given that it was a Sacramento summer day. I would love to see the AC back up and running next time. * The Carbonara, while nice, was not a standout in my opinion. They have a carbonara, they do it well enough, but nothing particularly special - light on the guanciale. * Location is certainly loud. Just the way the dining room is designed, no problem with the experience. Just be prepared to listen and speak up a little for dinner.

The inside was pillow-y soft, and when mixed with the salsa verde was full of flavor with a fabulous punch of garlic. The salsa verde could be put over a nice flank steak and it would absolutely kill. That said, the octopus was a bit *too* crispy. I felt I had to really chew to get it down, and I just wanted a nice snappy skin for some textural juxtaposition. For my entree, I got the Bolognese which was definitely full of salt. The pasta was wonderfully thin and bouncy, but I feel the chef may have had an off-day. My friend and I had to down like multiple cups of water with our meal which made it hard to enjoy. Plus, the garlic bread felt like biting into a brick. The inside was quite fluffy and soft, but the crust was simply too crispy. I almost felt like my teeth were going to give way. Honestly, I can't in good faith recommend this place to my friends, so neither would I recommend it to you. (aside from the pasta classes)

BEST. DINNER. EVER…read more Picture This: We are one of those obnoxious couples who have the audacity to hold hands and sit on the same side during dinner. Maybe steal a kiss. Yep. That's us. We arrived at Ella just before our 9:15 reservation and were promptly sat at a beautiful table. And wow, this table was gorgeous! The beautiful design of the space keeps your eyes entertained on every level. Both beauty and intrigue. It is a feast for the eyes before you get to the actual feast. However, we were hoping for a more intimate date experience so we asked for somewhere a little more secluded. Without hesitation, we were moved to another, equally beautiful table. Enter Kelly and Hunter. These two help to make our evening even more spectacular. The ambience was perfect. We started with their signature cocktail, gin and tonic with their homemade tonic and a martini. Hey-ooo! Dang that was a good drink. And efficient ;) We moved onto the heirloom tomato starter. Here is where I realized it started to get a little difficult. I was trying to look polished and refined, and really, you could've licked the plate. My handsome man is a vegetarian so he got the Barada spaghetti. I'm assuming he liked it because he ate every last bite. That, and he told me it was delicious. I ordered the lobster risotto. I have a hard time with food that looks too pretty to eat. But, I stopped staring at the beauty of the plate once the delicious smell rose in the air. Best risotto I've ever had. Hands-down. Makes a second place look pretty sad. No dessert but that can be remedied the next time we visit. We ended up having one of those dates where we ordered the appetizer and an hour later we hadn't finished it because we were still talking. I realized we hadn't even finished our appetizer course and yet, the restaurant was almost empty. When Hunter came by to refill the waters, I apologized that we hadn't even started eating yet and asked what time they closed. Hunter proceeded to provide the most amazing interaction. Making eye contact with both of us, he very kindly explained how they wanted this dinner to be an utterly unique experience and not worry. That we are here to enjoy ourselves in this beautiful restaurant so drink in every moment. And so we did. Kelly was awesome. We chatted for a bit about the musical tattoos on her hands. Just kind and sincere. Incredibly diligent service. At no time was I in need of anything. Waters were kept full, table kept cleared, food served exactly on time. It's a well oiled machine underneath the vibrant atmosphere. The food was spectacular. The ambience was one of a kind. A feast at every level. PS - I'm positive the open kitchen in the back would've been fun to watch, if I could have peeled my eyes off of who was in front of me.

Yesterday, I visited Ella Dining Room and Bar in Downtown Sacramento for the first time, and the…read moreexperience was exceptional. Ella is an upscale restaurant with a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere. I felt perfectly at ease wearing shorts and a polo, which speaks to how approachable the space is despite its refined reputation. Although I didn't order an appetizer, the staff surprised me with a complimentary cup of soup. It was delicious--rich, balanced, and a thoughtful touch that set the tone for the meal. For my main dish, I ordered the Crispy Fried Half Chicken with roasted garlic. It arrived with a small bottle of their house‑made hot sauce and was served in generous cuts: two drumsticks, a wing, and a breast (or thigh). The batter was beautifully flaky without falling apart, and the chicken itself was juicy, tender, and perfectly cooked. The crisp coating practically melted before giving way to a light crunch, and the hot sauce added just the right amount of subtle heat. I enjoyed it so much that I found myself wishing for a dim corner where I could privately eat every piece straight off the bone with my hands. The next time you are in Sacramento, please visit Ella Dining Room and Bar.

This is my first classic martini (unlike lychee martinis I've had before at other places). My server asked how I like it, with olive juice or with lemon twist or another option I don't remember. To be honest I don't know how I like it because it's is my first classic martini. So I was honest with him. I said I'll do whatever you recommend because I wanted to try a classic martini cuz I've been watching Gossip Girl. I felt silly admitting I wanted a martini because of a tv show. But my server actually did his research and found that Blair (a main character in the show) likes her martini with a lemon twist. And that is the martini I got. He brought frozen glass and poured the drink on the spot. It was such a vibe and a great drink. For food I got the grilled prawns. This dish is delicious and goes so well with my martini! For my second drink I got the shiso fresh. I was debating between two drinks and asked my server for suggestions. He is absolutely right with this recommendation. Shiso fresh is refreshing and sweet but not too sweet. I loved it. Service is wonder and drinks are tasty. I can't wait to come back!

The interior is dark and light simultaneously, with its rich textiles and colors, high ceilings and the large south-facing window on the long exterior wall. Really nicely done and quite inviting. Travis mixed up what could very well have been the best Old Fashioned we've ever had. It's not my preferred cocktail, but if more were like this one, that may be another story. I opted for the Kumquat Kiss, which was delicious and different. Besides that Old Fashioned, the Hash Brown Lyonnaise really stole the show. Pillow-light hash brown sticks (how did they do that?!) with a scrumptious onion dip with crispy shallots and finely chopped chives. This is one of my top happy hour dishes of the year. Just wow! Try it yourself and tell me you don't agree. The Grilled Prawns missed the mark for me a bit, although the husband liked them. Tasty, but just not as much of a star as the other dish. Only suggestion is to have a happy hour menu for bites as well as beverages, as is found on the website. This would help avoid the need for staff to present a dinner menu (which admittedly, I was confused by) and acknowledge that the first course options are all available but at no happy hour discount (which felt a bit awkward for all involved). Overall, a delightful discovery!

The service was decent. They did forget to tell us about happy hour until we had ordered - but no worries. The space is well organized. Lots of dark woods and comfortable leather. My dad got the jambalaya and couldn't finish his - which is insanely rare for him. We started with the crab cakes to share and our food came out almost immediately after the crab cakes were served - it was A LOT of food at once! But it was all delicious so no complaints here! The fish was perfectly battered and their fries were absolutely delectable - both the fries and fish were perfect GBD. I tried a happy hour margarita which was good, very standard happy hour marg. My dad ordered a specialty beer which is definitely the way to go at this craft house. Our waitress was lovely, incredibly friendly. The restaurant itself is very cool - black seats and tables for a more intimate ambiance. They have great happy hour options so I would definitely take advantage of those!
