As mentioned, we were regulars at the NYC East village location, still like Mountain House now that it opens in Boston. The service here is much better though. Menu is essentially the same as that in NY. My favorite and always go to is the stone pot green pepper fish - something you don't get anywhere else. Their Mao Xue Wang is constantly good too, just that the taste may not be that special. The sour cabbage beef soup is also a top choice but it can vary in its quality and flavor. Overall, highly recommended. And definitely try the three dishes mentioned above! read more

I don't think I've ever been impressed by a Boston restaurant in a very long time until my meal at Mountain House recently! My dining partner and I arrived just before 5pm on a Friday and luckily we just beat the crowds that were coming in 15/20 min later. I read that folks could wait around 1-2 hours for a table, so I recommend coming before 5pm on a weekday or at off hours on a weekend. This was my first time here and I was already impressed by the fancy decor, complimentary tea / pickles, and the how quickly the food came out. For the two of us, we ordered the ma ma hot fish, Szechuan shredded pork, and the stir fried water spinach, along with two bowls of rice. The taste of each dish was incredible; honestly one of the most delicious meals I've had in a while. The fish and meat dishes were spicy and super flavorful, and the veggie was nice and garlicky which helped cut through the spicy and oily proteins. I will have to say that every single customer I saw was of Asian decent, so the food here really caters to those looking for authentic Sichuan / Szechuan flavors which may be a surprise to some. There's even some rabbit and eel on the menu! Although the food came out quickly, I will have to say that the service was okay. Not awful but not memorable either. I think because they have so many customers and want to turn over quickly, the servers are scrambling to quickly serve and work fast. I had to ask for water twice and didn't get it until about half way into my meal. There was also confusion about which table got what dish - we were presented with three different dishes that we never ordered and had to tell the staff they got the wrong table. I definitely want to come back to try more, but it's quite pricey, so I will return for special occasions. We spent about $90 for the three dishes and rice (including tax and tip) and left with a small portion of everything to take home. read more

This place is the real deal. After an 150 minute wait (pro tip: Meet Fresh across the street is a great place to hang out and wait - if you're open minded to doing dessert first), we were seated at 6:30pm. Yes, we got there at 4. The food is really high quality. Every single dish was tasty and well-presented, and it is very authentic to traditional Szechuan style. It is priced this way, too. Came out to be about $80/person with tip and tax though we ordered way too much food and took much of it home. The service and decor were also 100%. Very happy with the overall experience. read more

The like is extremely long. We had to sign in the waitlist and scout around (or do other things) for three hours before finally getting a text to return for our table being called. The hyped is probably generated from its success in NYC (East Village) where we used to be regulars prior to moving to Boston, which expanded to Los Angeles on August of this year, and now, finally, Boston in November is this year. The service seems to be better than that in NYC. I would say the food is about the same. The decor is so nice inside. The main tip here is to have someone get a spot ahead of time before you can finally dine in 2-3 hours later. This is probably the norm and not just the hype due to its recent soft opening. read more

I thought I could avoid the long line by coming on a Wednesday in a group of 2, but still ended up waiting 1 hour. I am grateful I didn't wait longer though! I was worried that the place was hyped because of its nice aesthetic (the heated tea pot they give is so fancy) but I was very happy to find out that their food is really good. The prices on the menu aren't cheap but the portions are quite big. If you're not afraid of waiting for a long time, I highly recommend coming in a big group so that you can try a bunch of dishes! We decided to order 3 dishes and take home whatever leftovers we had. We tried the sauteed water spinach ($16), pepper rabbit meat ($24), and stone pot green pepper fish ($36). I also got a green grape and strawberry yakult ($5.5) which was so fruity and tasty!!! Even the pickles they give in the beginning are very good. Every dish we ordered was so good! The water spinach was fresh and garlicky, the pepper rabbit was super tender, and the fish was so flaky and came with this delicious, numbing, cumin-spiced broth that the noodles and rice cakes soaked up beautifully. I've never had rabbit meat before so it had a lot more bones than I was expecting. However it was so tender and the sauce was a delicious blend of savory, spicy, and mala. The dish came with wood ear mushrooms which went super well with the tasty sauce. I would highly highly highly recommend trying the stone pot green pepper fish. The broth almost had a curry-like flavor to it and was somehow both flavorful yet light at the same time. We were planning to take home leftovers but ended up finishing all of the fish because it was so good. The servers are kind and professional. I look forward to coming back! read more

The interior is more upscale than your average Chinese spot. Nice touches include hot tea served at the table and small cubbies under the chairs for your belongings. The bathroom was also quite clean, and the packaging for leftovers was fancier than the typical brown paper bags you'd get. The menu isn't overwhelming, which I appreciate. That said, it would be helpful if detailed ingredients were listed for people with dietary restrictions, since the staff aren't very attentive once you're seated and it can be hard to ask questions. The rice was very fragrant and fluffy, which is a plus. The main dishes tasted like they used fresh ingredients and were flavorful. Unfortunately, every dish leaned quite salty. The biggest downside was how the staff cleared tables between customers. They pushed a dish-clearing cart down the narrow aisle stacked with dirty dishes, loudly dropping them into the cart while clearing tables. Staff also sprayed surface cleaner right next to us while we were still eating. It's a real turnoff to smell and taste cleaning chemicals while you're dining, and to have a cart piled with dirty dishes right next to your table. I hope the cleaning practices improve. I'd otherwise like to come back for the food and ambiance. read more

This is such a welcome addition to the Allston area. I tried the pepper rabbit meat, which coats your mouth with such a satisfying tingling Mala feeling, and the flavors blend together so well. A major qualm with this dish is that the rabbit bones are so small that you have to be quite careful eating this dish (and would definitely not recommend that a small child eat this because the bones can be quite sharp). The fried shredded eel was perfectly fried and not too spicy. The swing belly pork was a nice break from the rest of the spiciness and of course aesthetically fun; the cucumber balanced out the pork belly fattiness and chili oil well. The wait time on weekends is quite long-- arrived around 5:45 and only got a table at 7:30. The staff are super friendly and attentive, always making sure you're doing well and the teapot is well supplied. Will be back for sure! read more

The service is very attentive. The restaurant is very nice inside. The decor is very lovely and the cups were super cute. The food does not disappoint. The fried rice & cauliflower were my favorites of the night! Highly recommended giving those a try. Neither of which are too spicy. I would definitely return to try the other menu items. read more

The food here is definitely on the salty side. Even after specifically asking for less salt, oil, and spice, the dishes still came out overloaded with sichuan peppers, to the point where the spice numbs your tongue almost instantly. Compared to other Sichuan restaurants in Boston, this one just doesn't measure up for me, so I probably wouldn't recommend it to friends. That said, everyone's taste is different. Service was also on the slower side, which was surprising given how many waiters were working. The price is okay. read more

We've had fantastic dining experiences at Mountain House in NY, so we were stoked to hear they'd be opening a restaurant in Boston! The thoughtful decor, lighting, and aesthetics created an authentic vibe of entering the center of Sichuan Province. The servers were attentive and friendly, helping us navigate through their extensive menu. We ordered: - Fu-Qi Special: Sliced beef in chili sauce. Tender, savory, and spicy. Not dry at all. The chili sauce was so good we considered taking the leftover drippings home. This cold dish is perfect with warm rice. - Beef Sour Soup: Beef slices and enoki mushroom. Deliciously sour and tart. We loved how the beef soaks in the flavor of the soup and that it comes with rice cakes and konjac noodles. - Szechuan Cabbage and Fish: Fish filet with pickled cabbage, chili, and peppercorn. Similar broth to the beef sour soup, but with delicate fish filets instead of hearty beef slices. - Green Spicy Bass: Beautiful presentation and great for those who can handle spice and love Chinese leeks. The bass itself was perfectly cooked - tender, juicy, and delicate. - Country Braised Pork: Soft, fatty pork belly complemented by a subtle crunch from the preserved vegetables. Over a bed of warm rice, this was the most perfect, savory bite. Definitely on the pricier side, but Mountain House offers an upscale Szechuan dining experience and fresh menu items that are difficult to find elsewhere in Boston. Everything we ordered was delicious and authentic, and we will certainly be returning to explore more of their menu. Make sure to come early as they don't take reservations. Once you join the waitlist, you will receive a text when your table is ready. read more

Opened about a month ago and it's already all over Boston Eater. We got to check out the place to see what's the hype (apparently a famous chain from NYC) Reservation is not possible for this location yet so I would go super early or after 3pm. Foolishly I arrived at 1:30pm so there were at least 20 parties ahead of me and the wait time was an hour. Adding to the wait list was super easy and you will get notified via text. Alternatively you can download the app so you can see the wait in real time. The wait seemed to be around 40 mins. After receiving the text that your table is ready, you have to respond to the text within 10 mins or your reservation will be dropped. The food came out quickly. We got a free show out of beef ribs entree. Server lit up the cooking oil in the gravy dish and heated the ribs over it. The spicy oil was on the side so kids can enjoy the dish. You can create your own bao (beef, cucumber slices, and option to add chili oil or not). My husband preferred lean cut but I was ok with a little fat. Oh the spicy black fish fillet stew! Although spicy, I was still able to taste the sweetness and freshness of the fish. Please note that the skin was still on the fillets. they came off easily. I skipped the beanspouts because I didn't want to accidentally swallow the peppercorns. Numbing chicken was a perfect name! At first I thought it was not spicy at all but it kicks in slowly with a tongue mumbling effect. Love it! Hoping to see some dishes that can include rice. Otherwise $2 for a small bowl. On the pricey side but everything we tried was authentic so definitely worth the wait and price. It is really hard to find an authentic Szechuan restaurant in Boston. other Szechuan restaurants made the dishes sweeter to cater to most folks in America. Mountain house so far is the only restaurant I tried recently that reminded me of the wonderful restaurants I dined when I traveled to Asia. I think they will do well and glad they opened a location in Boston! Street parking. The bathroom is squeaky clean. Did I mention the soothing music while dining? I thought I was getting a massage. Nice and attentive staff. Want to throw a party? There's a large table at the end of the restaurant that can fit 6-8 people. read more

Soft opening as of this review as posted on their website. Spot on flavors and overall great meal. Most dishes will be hot spicy (ma) and many will also be numb spicy (la). So as a heads up since you're going to a Sichuan restaurant, and dishes in this region are spicy. Very nice aesthetics and decor and sevice was very nice and attentive. A great place for date night, night out with friends, and overall escape to a place that vibes out Sichuan cuisine. read more

Boston location finally opened! Soft opening was in November and still in soft opening stage. But the level of service from all the wait staff felt like they've been opened for years. The moment you walk in, you definitely feel like you're in the mountains. The dining area has dim lighting, windows are dark tinted so you can't see outside. Our server was very efficient, well experienced, attentive and polite. The servers here help pour the tea and serve the soup (if you order soup). We ordered hot and sour soup and it was a large portion (enough for 4). Taste was pretty on point, not too sour but flavorful. We got their signature Swing Pork Belly (thinly sliced pork belly with cucumber slices, garlic and chili oil sauce). This was very light and the pork belly itself doesn't have any taste so you need to dip the sauce, which paired well). The Kung pao chicken had good amount of spice and flavor. The eggplant with string beans was a bit salty. We came on Sunday at 630pm and the wait was 1.5 hrs. If you come at 8p there shouldn't be a wait. Or you can come earlier and put your name down on the waitlist and get some drinks nearby while waiting. read more

Phenomenal service and food. We did a walk in & got seated right away. The hostess was friendly and allowed us to sit at a preferred table since it wasn't busy yet. There is a QR code to scan and also order on. Our food came out fast and efficiently. Everything was delicious & I enjoyed the Sautéed eggplants the most. I will say the La-Zi chicken had an overbearing amount of chili, but that's my personal preference. The inside had dim lighting & it doesn't get too loud. My favorite part was our service. Authentic Sichuan food, a beautiful interior, and amazing service -- what's not to love? This is probably the best Chinese food I've had in Boston and every item I've gotten has managed to impress me and all the friends I've brought here. Favorites include the kung pao chicken, cold spicy okra, and the lotus root dish. The complementary tea is also great and they keep it warm throughout the meal with a mini heater! NYC friends recommended this place to me, and the Boston location for some reason is WAY easier to get into. I was able to get an early but reasonable dinner reservation same-day for a 6 top, midweek - perhaps because it's not clear from their website that they take phone reservations at all. Food-wise, lots (though not all) of Sichuan classics plus some stuff I didn't recognize but was still delicious. Mapo tofu is the most numbing thing I've eaten in my life outside of Chengdu. Go here if you love Sichuan food and order pretty much anything unless it belongs on a takeout menu (some dining partners ordered the Kung Pao chicken, it wasn't my favorite rendition as someone who prefers authentic Chinese food and has had the rare beast of authentic Kung Pao in the past). read more

This is the best authentic Chinese food in Boston outside of Chinatown. This restaurant has many other locations like in New York. They have a wide range of szechuan dishes and definitely live up to the hype! We ordered the swinging pork belly (their most popular dish), fish cabbage soup, and a pan fried tofu dish. The pork belly was actually pretty disappointing because it was just thin, cold slices of pork belly. But the sauce, both sweet and spicy, saved it 6/10. Ohmygosh the fish soup. Now, don't be turned off because it's fish. I've never had anything like this. The broth is incredibly rich, but also light because of the citrus, and sneaky spicy! It doesn't seem too bad right away but the heat definitely creeps up on you. The fish was insanely soft and the veggies added great texture and flavor. If only I wasn't so bad with spice... 9/10. The tofu dish was also very unique! It comes plain and crispy, the server adds the thick, umami sauce. this dish also has kick to it so be warned! 7.5/10. There's a reason why this restaurant is as popular as it is! If you're gonna visit, I recommend going early or giving yourself time to put yourself on the waitlist. They also prioritize parties who are waiting at the restaurant, so stay strong and wait there!! I will 1000% be back read more

They made the dishes as requested for our kids who can't eat spicy. The adults enjoyed every dish, yum! There's plenty of variety from beef tongue to fish fillets. The food here is absolutely amazing and definitely worth the wait. Expect a wait time of 30 minutes to an hour due to its popularity, but it's well worth it. Personally, I tried the Swing Pork Belly, Yo-In-Style Ramen Noodles, Beef and Enoki Cabbage Soup, and Black Fish Fillet with Szechuan Pickles. We stumbled into Mountain House on a rainy evening after many months of avoiding the long waits. Turns out 8pm on a Thursday + torrential downpour makes for a pretty unpopular meal time. Ordering was done entirely through the website, which made it hard to get the attention of staff when we had questions. We got 4 items, and while I definitely enjoyed the flavors in some of the items, the avalanche of peppercorn in other items made it hard to enjoy the rest of the meal. We ordered the okra in chili sauce, which I really enjoyed! It was a simple dish, but the savory spicy flavor was addictive and the cold okra was refreshing and perfectly cooked. I also loved the sauteed pea shoots with garlic -- delicious soupy sauce and perfectly crunchy veggies. The pao cai that they give as a free app is quite spicy and good. We got the ma-ma hot fish -- apparently the black fish has skin and bones, while the flounder is a fillet. We got the flounder. The amount of peppercorn in this dish was overwhelming. Otherwise, the fish was tender and the beansprouts were good. I'm not sure if I would get this again because of the peppercorn. My mouth was tingling on overdrive and I couldn't taste the delicious pea shoots :( Finally, we got the diced chicken with lotus root. The chicken has skin and the occasional bone, and the flavor is very numbing, with some sourness. I wouldn't get this again but it was very interesting. The restaurant is beautiful, with dimly lit elegance and artistic bowls and decor. Overall I enjoyed the vegetables more than the meats that I tried. I'd be down to go again and try some other dishes, and strategically eat things without peppercorn before digging into the numbing dishes. read more

Verges on 3.5 for me, I really wanted to like this place more. The ambiance and decor are great honestly really chic and dressed up on the inside compared to normal Allston. Service was alright, they lose a star in my mind cause I ordered a white rice and it never came despite asking a server. For me the food was a bit of a miss, the hot fish dish was challenging to eat with the sheer amount of peppers, which I understand, it's the cuisine right but if you bite into one errand pepper your whole mouth is just stunned for 5 mins like gg. This cold chicken too was also a miss flavor wise, not much going on, and frankly I've had better in bumfnowhere America. The tofu and noodle dish however was great and made it up for me. Would go again and just order different things. read more

The ambience was nice and the food may have been good... (I realized from this experience I may not be a fan of Chinese food so I am not a very good judge of the food. Personally I didn't like the food but I am not basing my review on food taste since I haven't been exposed to enough Chinese dishes to know and enjoy the flavors.) The presentation of the dishes was very nice. My main point of feedback comes down to service. I didn't like that the menus were online and we were expected to order from our mobile phone. I ended up just asking for a physical menu. I actually really loathe this and it does impact my decision to come again. I also would have preferred a waiter than to order on my phone as this could have been a valuable moment to help point me in the right direction of top tier dishes or even just dishes that would fit my preferences. On the upside, the dishes arrived speedily and the staff were attentive overall albeit not individually engaged with each table personally. read more

10/21/2025 4:20 pm. I had a very unpleasant and upsetting experience at this Chinese restaurant. I ordered the black fish soup because I don't eat beef, but they gave me a beef soup instead. I immediately called the restaurant to let them know they made a mistake and asked for a refund. I even said I would place a new order with the correct dish, but instead of helping, the staff argued with me. At first, they refused to give me a refund and insisted that I place a new order without refunding the incorrect one. I decided to go to the restaurant in person to talk calmly, but the tall Chinese male staff who took my order became aggressive and confrontational. At one point, he even asked me, "Where do you live?" which made me feel extremely uncomfortable and unsafe. I honestly didn't understand why he asked such a question -- it felt threatening, as if he might want to harm me. Because of this incident, I have already filed a police report. Fortunately, a female staff member stepped in, gave me a cash refund, and told him to calm down. Still, this experience was very scary and completely unacceptable. The male employee's behavior was unprofessional, rude, and intimidating. I've been a loyal customer of this restaurant for a long time, even at their locations in New York (W 46th & 9th Ave) and Boston, but after this experience, I will never return. I truly hope the management takes this seriously and trains their staff to treat customers with respect and basic decency. read more

When you step in and see a man of culture inhaling fried rice while watching hentai like it's no one's business you know you're at the right place. I was impressed with their complimentary pickled cabbage - crunchy fresh sour with a bit of a kick. My favorite dish gotta be the iconic swing pork belly ($14). Thinly sliced pork belly on top of a piece of cucumber to balance out the grease, dipped in a chili oil garlic sauce. I could be eating this all day. Pickled pepper frog meat ($32) was also quite tasty. Just look at those juicy chubby frog chucks. It was on the spicer side but not bad at all. Mala pork intestines ($24) were pretty standard, crispy intestines that were well seasoned. Jiang stew fish ($33)was one of their popular dishes too and it was kinda underwhelming, the fish was kinda cold and not very flavorful. The dishes came out super fast, and the servers were super attentive and accommodating. Overall it's definitely a great and laidback vibe to have some great sichuan food. read more
