Really well done Sichuan food in Allston - I believe Mountain House comes to the Boston area from New York originally! A welcomed addition to the neighborhood bringing authentic flavors with an elegant ambiance and kind service. The signature swing pork belly with cucumber is great with an addicting sauce. The grilled beef ribs were a great entree and cut tableside, which was a nice showstopper and came with bao and cucumbers/scallions as if it was peking duck being served. The eggplant dish and string beans are excellent vegetable entrees/sides and pair perfectly with their fluffy white rice. Mapo tofu and the fish soup were fine. One thing of note compared to other Sichuan restaurants in the area, I find Mountain House's food to be much cleaner (for a lack of a better word) and prominently less oily, which I can always appreciate. For some this might mean less flavor, which I could slightly agree to, as I think I do prefer other Sichuan restaurants a bit more, but Mountain House is still a fantastic option

Mountain House was a solid Sichuan meal. We ordered the sliced beef and tripe in chili oil, Sichuan boiled beef, and Chongqing style spicy chicken. Everything came out flavorful, spicy, and packed with that numbing Sichuan peppercorn kick. The spicy chicken was probably my favorite crispy, well seasoned, and loaded with dried chilies. The boiled beef had a rich, spicy broth and was great with rice. The beef and tripe appetizer was also really good and had a nice balance of chili oil, sesame, peanuts, and that signature mala flavor. Portions were generous and the food definitely delivered if you're looking for authentic, bold Sichuan flavors. Overall, a very good meal and somewhere I'd come back to.

Perhaps it's been too long since I've had good Chinese food, but this is the first time I've found Sichuan cuisine to be this delicious... This is the closest I've had to modern Chinese cuisine in Boston so far. Swing Pork Belly 晾衣白肉: My first time trying Lizhuang pork belly, I'd heard so much about it! The pork belly was sliced very thinly, chilled to perfection, and served with refreshing cucumber slices--not greasy at all. The minced fresh garlic was a bit too spicy for me, but the chili oil was very fragrant, making it very flavorful overall. Yibin Style Ran Noodles 宜賓燃麵: Another first time trying this, how could noodles be so delicious... The alkaline noodles were thin and firm, with a great texture; the flavor was oily, savory, and slightly spicy, with a delightful sweet aftertaste--fragrant but not greasy. The cucumber shreds added to the overall refreshing taste. Green Pepper Mao Xue Wang 青一色毛血旺: My first time trying Maoxuewang with green peppers, and it was surprisingly fresh and clean, with a medicinal aroma. The spiciness was only mild, and it wasn't oily at all. The ingredients were good: the pig's blood and konjac were smooth and chewy, the pork aorta was crisp and springy, the celtuce were crisp, and the eel shreds were chewy and crunchy--a very rich selection. Spicy Frog Lover 舌尖上的蛙跳: Relatively average. It had the classic Sichuan boiling flavor, but the broth was almost like it had been thickened with cornstarch; the frog meat was a bit firm, not tender; and the pickled vegetables were too acidic.

I've been wanting to try Mountain House for so long! This time, while in Boston visiting, we made a trip out to Allston for it. It was packed Sunday night and I added myself to the waitlist upon entering. We walked around town and got some Molly tea. We waited almost an hour for a table. It was so worth it. The ambiance feels like you're in a historic tea house in China. From the traditional wood furniture to the use of tea sets with cast iron tea kettles, it's quite charming and cute. The jasmine tea is so fragrant and you can tell it's high quality tea leaves used. We got the pork belly swing with garlic chili oil, crispy sizzling tofu, black fish with pickled mustard greens (酸菜鱼), and stir fried pea shoots. Every dish was delicious and cooked to perfection. The flavors were phenomenal. I can't wait to come back and try more dishes out!

Very very solid Szechuan food. I've been here a couple times and still need to go back to try more dishes. Would recommend: Sour cabbage fish (must get) Sliced beef in chili Chili wontons Mapo tofu La zi chicken

portions here seem smaller than the ones in NYC but maybe it's just different from dish to dish. quality is great, love mountain house! their dessert tangyuan is the perfect way to end the meal

This place transported me to a whole other location! I didn't feel like I was in Massachusetts anymore. The decor inside and the quality of their food here takes you away! From the very attentive and supportive staff to the intricate details that they have throughout the restaurant , it is truly transformative experience. As for the food, if you're in the mood of something spicy, especially that Sichuan type of heat, then the beef soup is the one for you! I personally would recommend the green pepper pork because it was absolutely delicious! I could not stop eating it and it was just perfect in every which way! Looking forward to coming here again to try many other delicious foods and will probably bring a couple of more friends because their group seating is absolutely stunning!

Limited Street Parking The food made up for the wait time but it was very long. This place was packed, we came in no reservation and the wait time they told us just kept getting longer. We eventually were able to get in, there is a small space to wait with snacks though. Once our table was almost ready the host allowed us to order and once sat it came almost right away. We ordered the la-xi chicken with less spice, this has small crispy chicken pieces and lot of peppers, had to go in and pick out the little pieces. Truthfully wish it was less pepper and more chicken especially $23.95. The mapo tofu was delicious the perfect numbing sensation that I love. A must try dish was the fish fillet with crispy rice. This was $34 but it is perfect for cold day. They bring this dish out pour the soup on top and let it boil until the crispy gets cooked. We got the green beans as well, pretty standard nothing special. We got a little discount as well, I think for a late night special. The entire meal came with tea and the restaurant had calm setting with wooden interior

Thin Sliced Pork Belly with Cucumber (signature dish)

Sichuan Gourmet in Billerica has always been my Boston-area Sichuan touchstone. But Mountain House has it beat. Like a high-end SG with extra care taken in the food presentation and the space. However, Mountain House is VERY spicy, and the dishes tend to be quite large, so be forewarned. Order via a iPad, and then they curiously come back and double check your order. So despite the iPad, service is very good. Unfortunately, I was not excited by their signature Thin Sliced Pork Belly with Cucumber ("hanging pork belly"). But it is certainly Instagrammable (which I did, of course). Street parking, so hit or miss.

Love how immersive this restaurant is! The atmosphere is beautiful and peaceful even while being bustling. The interior design is so well thought and adds to the ambiance of the entire establishment. We went on a weekday night at around 7PM and only had to wait around 20 minutes which was not bad at all especially since we got to enjoy some nice hot tea while we sat and waited. Service was efficient and every dish was dynamite! I was a little disappointed by the fish since I had mistakenly thought it was a different fish but it was still yummy. Highlights were the fried rice with special szeuchan greens and the mapo tofu!

Mountain House delivers bold, unapologetic Sichuan flavors, and when the dishes hit, they really hit. We ordered a wide spread, and several dishes stood out. The mapo tofu, stir-fried Chinese long beans, and sautéed lily bulbs with snow peas were all excellent--each easily five-star dishes. The mapo tofu had deep, numbing heat and great balance, while the vegetables were perfectly cooked, flavorful, and refreshing amid the heavier dishes. The swinging pork belly with garlic sauce and dumplings in chili oil were solid starters, full of aroma and spice. The la-zi chicken delivered exactly what you'd expect--crispy pieces buried under dried chilies with serious heat. We also tried a beef tripe dish and a shrimp dish loaded with red peppers, both clearly authentic and spice-forward, though better suited for those who truly enjoy intense Sichuan flavors. The fried rice with pickled veggies and bacon was comforting and helped balance out the meal. Where the experience fell short was service. A few items were forgotten and had to be reminded multiple times, which disrupted the pacing of the meal. Staff were polite, but the lag and inconsistency kept this from being a five-star visit. Overall, Mountain House is a great destination if you like Sichuan cuisine.

Mountain House is one of the special spots among Chinese restaurants in Boston. Starting with their modern decor, their emphasis on the details, their take on traditional and contemporary Szechuan cuisine, and their tremendously synchronized service between FOH and BOH - all that is unusual for what we know as Chinese cuisine everywhere. Calling them a good spot is such an understatement as I've recommended them to anyone who asks for an amazing Chinese spot to visit. Yes, they are part of my top three Chinese spots in this whole area. I would never hesitate to visit if anyone asked me to join them. Why? Each culinary detail has much thought and technique. Every step is done for a reason and displayed for those with keen eyes to see. It makes me feel like I've been ported to the imperial kitchen tasting dishes that are being perfected for the emperor himself. I really don't need to elaborate on how good the food is. Rather, I will let you judge it for yourself based on their loyal following, the sometimes ridiculous wait times, and the fact that this restaurant is NEVER empty. As much as I hate waiting, like all the other grumbling folk around me in the "lobby" and outside, we still sit tight up to an hour plus at times jealously staring down the other patrons feasting away like rabid fiends. I can't wait to go back again in 2026. Happy New Year and thank you for the great food and amazing times here! Cheers!!!

Crispy Sizzling Tofu

I was really, really bummed to not like Mountain House, but the honest truth is that I had no idea how anyone even finished their meal, let alone liked it. It appears that there is pretty much always a line here--we were seated in a reasonable amount of time, but any wait at all for this experience doesn't seem worth it. We ordered the crispy sizzling tofu and the sour cabbage and fish soup. The dishes don't come with rice, so it needs to be ordered on the side. The redeeming quality here was that the crispy tofu was excellent. It came out steaming hot (temperature-wise), was bursting with flavor, and wasn't soggy at all. I'm no stranger to Szechuan food, but after 2 bites, the fish was nearly completely inedible to me. The dish was so mouth-numbingly spicy that you could hardly feel your lips or tongue, let alone the food. We ended up calling it quits and leaving, even skipping our planned dessert stops. It's possible that there are folks out there who can stomach this quantity of Szechuan peppercorns in their food, but I was so taken aback in part because I'm very accustomed to eating this cuisine, and have never had this issue anywhere else. The restaurant itself feels unique and upscale, with wide booths and pretty dishware. It's pretty busy here so it is somewhat difficult to get service, and ordering is done via mobile device. A manager did stop by to chat with us, especially after we mentioned it was our first time, but when we wanted to ask for something specific it took a while to find a server.

Beef + fish - bean curd skin + spam - fried milk curd + spicy chicken (cold) or crispy pork belly This is definitely enough for 2 of us, probably 3 people even depending on how big of an eater group you have! Everything came out quickly, i enjoy the broth a lot, it's not overly spicy and the sour tang is yummy. The beef is super tender, we usually bring the beef to the top so it doesn't end up overcooking while being in there. Feels like a good portion. The sides you add to it are also dumped in there pretty hefty. The crispy pork was alright, it would be nice if a bit crispier, ours didn't have that crunch when initially biting into it. Maybe not the way it's supposed to be but for me anyways. The milk curd was good to me, light flaky crispy. The lady loves the cold spicy chicken dish, that's almost a meal in itself. Will be back!

B2J Tasty Pot is so good, I ended up coming here two nights in a row for dinner!…read more My first visit here, we ordered a combo for 2. This comes with a small pot with 1 lb of your choice of broth & protein (fish, beef, or both), 2 add-ons to your pot, 2 appetizer sides, and 2 bowls of rice. We did: - fish and beef with signature spicy sour broth (mild spicy) - 2 add ons: bean curd sticks + spam - 2 sides: spiced chicken w/ chili sauce & house made fried milk custard The combos are such a good deal! If you order a small pot of fish & beef on its own, it's $39.99. For $26 more, you get 2 add ons, 2 sides, & 2 bowls of rice. BUT I guess if you're not too hungry, you could totally get away with ordering just the pot! We typically order appetizer dishes whenever we go out to eat & had planned to get some sides anyways, so the combo deal worked in our favor. With that being said, i think next time we come, we could totally do the small pot with 1 side = $50. Honestly, it did end up being way more food than we could finish & we had leftovers to take back with us. For my second visit, we were a party of 5 and decided to get the combo for 3! This includes a medium pot (1.5lb protein of choice), 3 add-ons, and 3 side dishes. This was the perfect amount of food for us. I think if we had done the combo for 4, it would've been way too much. I'd say, the combos are great but totally not necessary. Only go for it if you actually see some appetizers & add-ons you'd like. The spiced chicken is my favorite side/appetizer! It is served cold & is decently spicy. Both visits, I opted for the same broth & protein: fish + beef. Fish & beef were cooked perfectly. I liked that the beef was soft & not hard to chew. The mild spicy broth is spicy but not too spicy where you'd need to take a break in between or need a beverage. I liked that the spice did not take away from the flavor. Service was great! The staff that helped us were all super kind and helpful. Well air conditioned & we found the restaurant to be very clean. Would totally come back again.

Our drinks (I got the Oishii) were all wonderful too. The ma-po tofu had the delicious mouth-numbing Sichuan peppercorn throughout. The signature Dan Dan noodles were flavorful and multilayered. The lotus fries had a garlic powder and a little sweet touch to them, and stayed perfectly crispy for the entirety of our meal. The pork dumplings were fluffy and satiating. The sponge cake was a little lacking in flavor but we appreciated that it wasn't too sweet. This place gets packed even on weekdays, so keep that in mind - it did get a little hectic and hot inside because of how busy it was. Service was still lovely despite how busy it was.
