I recommend the MSS basic safety course. The instructors are great, and they work hard to get you to pass the test. However, I want to add a few caveats about the course. This was my first time on a motorcycle, and quickly learned that riding wasn't as easy as I'd imagined. Motorcycling is a bit like skiing- it takes some athleticism and coordination to succeed. You've got to learn to delicately balance the throttle with the clutch - while maintaining balance during very tight turns. For me this was quite difficult and I failed the test, in spite of having taken 2 private lessons. Luckily MSS truly wants their students to succeed, and you've got a second chance with a free makeup test. I scheduled another private with the very calm James (I also recommend Dimitri) and subsequently passed the test. For those who are absolute beginners, and like me, may not have the best sense of balance, a couple of private lessons are a must before you take the beginner course. I attended the Motorcycling 101 class and that was great! Dimitiri was tough on being sure we had the skills but also a great teacher and respectful of the students! I attended the two day weekend class and the first day was great also due to the instructors Leon and Mike. Truly they are examples of great teachers! There instruction was so clear and they were patient and thoughtful with all the students. The second day was by far the worst teaching instructors I have ever seen! Jimmy was so belittling to the students that were first timers. He would curse out students for messing up " are you a fucking idiot" and talk to the other instructors about the students in front of everyone "how stupid are they. " A few students left because of his teaching. It is so clear HE has anger management issues and takes it out on the class. He truly needs to get therapy. I don't understand how MSS can keep an instructor that treats the students in such a manner. We are here to learn not be put down. Sandra was another instructor that was condensing and belittling while teaching the students. She pulled out her phone to answer a call a few times. She also yelled at a student's family member because she thought they were taking a picture and proceed to curse at them in the MIDDLE of our teaching course. Truly unprofessional. I do not know where MSS finds these instructors?! Again, I cannot stress enough if you are learning this for the first time there are plenty of other schools to attend where instructors well be patient, thoughtful and respectful. Also be mindful of the amount of money you are paying. You do not want to throw your money ($550) and ruin your experience! Lastly, you are not allowed to pick the kind of bike you want to ride. This is key to feeling comfortable and confident with riding. If you want to ride the sport bike that might not be an option and you would be stuck with a cruiser. I don't understand how they do not ask students and organize the class based on the student's ability to reach there maximize potential. Do better MSS! read more

The first impression I had here was horrible, taking the first test at MSS. It's not the facility itself but some of the instructors I dealt with in the Brooklyn area. I failed due to the miscommunication and aggressiveness of my instructors that day, most specifically the male instructor. I know I passed but was failed due to it not being to his liking. While one was praising my efforts, the other seemingly wasn't pleased at all. There was two classes in the other side their was instructor disrespecting and cursing at there students. The second time I took the test, my instructor Yoda was absolutely amazing. He was calm and collected while teaching his students, very professional and respectful. Andrew aka Yoda, Dana, and Ali we're my instructors and they were absolutely spot on with everything. I was in a class of 10 amazing individuals and we all learned a lot about our limitations and our capabilities. Yoda cares about his students and he keeps the class interesting and the atmosphere just right. I'll never forget his exhaust scraping entrance with his kawi vulcan 1700 on the first day of range . One of the students came in on a bike on their own to class and Dana spotted some very serious maintenance issues with his bike. He advised him to be extremely careful and gave tips on how he should remedy the situation. All the instructors chimed in to help and used it as a teaching moment to the rest of us on how important maintenance on a bike is. It's life or death. Dana gives great advice on the range as well. Last but not least, Ali. I actually had a private lesson with Ali and by the end of a two hour lesson, I felt like I understood what to do on a bike on the most basic level. You are expected to learn things very fast on the range with minimal practice. This is the result of the structure of the group range classes given the time allotted and not the instructors who were highly entertaining (shout out to James who made the time fly by). I came into the 2-day BRC-1 with some previous experience (owned a 150cc Vespa for a few months shh, rode and drove manual bikes and cars in my youth) but I was humbled and encouraged by the depth of their knowledge and skill. I also was grateful that they really put pressure on me to ride at my best, seeing where I'm looking, my clutch and throttle control, etc. Overall just felt an extreme sense of encouragement that I CAN ride, and there are always things to work on and improve. Great instructors, all of them - really down to earth and super helpful. James was the one who led our two-day course. He knew exactly what to focus on and what to draw our attention to, so not only were we ready for the road test, but most importantly felt confident about riding the bike outside of the school. I also liked it that he brought up real life examples and made some key concepts rhyme, so they stay in your mind in critical situations. Private lesson with Yoda.... Great! Went over the basics. Learned a lot! Signed up for the two day course and not so much. Had to keep asking the instructor to speak louder to hear during skill practice. As he tended to speak to the front of the line. The assistant mumbled through the description of the skills practice but fortunately there was a demonstration. Bikes are in bad condition. One guy's bike had to be changed. Several students were complaining of issues. My clutch was loose and I mentioned it to an instructor who tightened it. But it was still floppy. I kept stalling but tried to push through. I kept thinking why am I having so much trouble this time. Didn't happen with Yoda. I eventually was counseled out towards the end of day one, because I couldn't keep up with the class due to friction zone issues. I thought it was me and was willing to accept that until talking to rider friends who said the clutch should not be loose and flopping. Then I thought back to my private lesson with Yoda and no issues with friction zone. That bike was in better condition. $400 wasted... I should have spoken up and asked for another bike. I wouldn't recommend the school if you're trusting them to provide safe working equipment. It's all good until you get the crappy bike. read more

My group had to endure taking this challenging, yet extremely fun and NECESSARY course during a heat wave. BUT, while (struggling) in 95+ degrees in the burning sun, the instructors remained supportive, patient, energetic, and when needed, gave us some tough love to help encourage us to keep getting better at acquiring the skills needed in each exercise. These guys are not only passionate about what they do, but they do a remarkable job of giving you the tools you need to be able to competently ride a motorcycle given the time allotted. Joseph was my main instructor, and our range instructors were Elliot and James. Let me tell you: these guys are FANTASTIC. They clearly care about the safety of their students and care about promoting safety in riding - on top of that, they made it fun. They were sure to not only impart the dangers of riding, but also help you develop a mindset that includes continuously improving and developing your own awareness and skills. I took the two day basic rider course at the 704 Fountain Ave location, and it was broken up into some online pre-work, then classroom instruction in the morning followed by hands-on motorcycle instruction and practice on the range. Our group was 8 people, everyone had their own bike to learn and practice on, and ample time to execute the techniques required for the curriculum. At the end of the second day, you take basically the same test the DMV gives you and if you pass, you get a waiver that you take to the DMV and are able to use to get your full M endorsement. I cannot recommend this place enough. They are awesome, and I feel significantly more comfortable on a bike. I learned far more in two days with MSS than I did with months practicing on the road with my riding permit and some friends. read more

A great place, mostly because it's filled with good souls and people who legitimately care about your safety as a burgeoning rider. My brother rides and kept telling me how incredible the feeling is, and having never been on a bike, I knew I needed to do something like this in order to be safe and learn the basic of riding if I wanted to hop on a motorcycle. I had the opportunity to take both private lessons and the basic rider course (over 2 days), and got to learn or work with most of the instructors on the Brooklyn campus. First, it's evident how much they all care about your safety. They're all (obviously) serious riders themselves, and they impart a culture of careful observation and real respect for the road, which I appreciated. I particularly need to shout out Joseph and Yoda, who taught me a ton of useful information in an extremely short span of time. The only reason this doesn't garner five stars is that the second morning (the second classroom session) was a literal and complete waste of time. We arrived super early in the morning for no reason, and that was frustrating. Also, as others have mentioned, the only real shelter is a trailer with intermittent AC, no running water, and no bathroom. When you're hanging out there for 8+ hours a day, you wish you had a bit more comfort to go off of. Having said that, don't let that deter you -- this is literally a life-saving course! read more

Before I start; I've been reading other reviews and I wanna point out that a scooter is not the same as a motorcycle and just because you have some scooter experience doesn't mean you're gonna pass the test easily. So stop saying that the instructors are terrible because they're not. They are there to teach you how to ride and to keep you alive. If you didn't get your license it's not because THEY failed you, you're just not ready. If they give you your license when you're not ready, the chances of you getting into an accident is very high and you'll put others on the road in danger and that is something that none of us want. Shoutout to Elliot, James, Yoda, and Sandra for being extraordinary coaches! One word that describes each of them: Elliot: chill James: hustler Yoda: patient asf Sandra: tipper Elliot: my first day and we connected already. He's funny and chill. Makes everything simple so it's very easy to understand. (More great stuff about him but I'm not gonna tell you guys cause I don't want to overwhelm him) James: very chill dude and funny as well. He will get on your ass if you're doing shit wrong and if you keep doing it he will kick you out, so listen and do what as told. He's not a bad guy he just wants you to do what you gotta do and he's there to make sure of that; which is why he yells and slam his stick of cones if you're doing stuff wrong or start out slow or if you keep stalling several times on the last day. Yoda: he's the guy that will never give up on you. There was a practice where we had to make a right turn and it was a very tight right turn. You basically come up and stop and the turn is right in front of you. I struggled every time, either putting my feet down or going outside the boundaries. On the last try Yoda saw that I was still not getting it so he stayed behind with me while the rest of my group waited just to show me how it's done. I still couldn't do it but he didn't give up on me and told me to go one last time and I happen to do it. I was very proud of myself and the rest of my group applaud. Sandra: she is very nice and calm. One outstanding thing about her is that she gives advice and tips every time you go by her and they're very helpful. It'll give you a clue of what you need to work on and what you're good at and see where you're standing. TIP: Be PUNCTUAL! If your class starts at 7am and you arrive at 7am you are late! So do yourself a favor by getting there 15 min prior and plan your trip accordingly. It will slow things down if people come in late and things will be rushed which is something you don't want. NOTE: if you get kicked out, don't blame the instructors that they're bad. They did it for a reason and the reason is being that they want you to be able to get home alive and unhurt by the end of the day and keep themselves and The rest of the group members safe. So don't be upset especially when you can reschedule or take a private lesson(s) to prepare for the course. SAFETY FIRST! Overall, I've learned a lot and made new friends. The staff there is are extraordinary and I left with a big smile on my face and my license. I can not thank them enough for putting their time and effort. read more

I took the Basic Rider Course and was surprised at how much I learned in just two days. My instructors were fantastic, especially Joseph. He's a truly outstanding teacher. I deducted one star for the site, which frankly is a dump. Classroom time takes place in a no-frills trailer. There's no bathroom, just a portable restroom. There's a couple of picnic tables out front, but look before you sit down because one corner is completely broken. I found out the hard way. read more

I use to ride in China back when I was a teen. Kept saying over and over that I would get my license out here and start riding but kept putting it off. Impulsively got my license and signed up for the 2.5 day class thinking it would be a breeze. Definitely was not We had a class of about 10. Day 1 was the half day. Had a classroom session with Frank. Super chill. Day 2 was out on the range with Frank and Joe. Both instructors out on the range were intense but I wouldn't have it any other way. Drilled what we needed to learn and any other time speaking to them they were the coolest guys. Day 3 was with Andrew aka Yoda and Faisel. Also super chill and taught us what we needed to learn. I didn't think I'd be such a huge fan of the class but definitely sending all my friends their way. Never met people who cared so much about other people's lives than these guys. read more

I just got home from taking the two day basic riding course. I'm exhausted as a result of the intense heat of the last two days. HOWEVER, it was a great experience and if anyone is considering driving either a motorcycle or a scooter, you have to make the investment in this course. Yes, I said investment! The course is $350 and that's cheap if you consider your safety important. $350 is chump change change when you consider the cost of biker gear (helmet,gloves, jacket, and pants) which can cost over a $1,000 easily. And if you consider the cost of a bike, then the $350 is truly immaterial. Why am I writing this review? I'm writing it because the instruction that we received, primarily from Andrew, AKA Yoda was exceptional!! Two days of learning how to ride, and in the heat was quite challenging. Yoda, however, kept it light and kept us focused as well as instilling confidence in our class. In my lifetime I have achieved many degrees, including a doctoral degree, and have had many professors/instructors in my life. In my estimation, Andrew is as fine an instructor, in teaching motorcycle riding and safety, as many of my great professors were in teaching their specialties. Motorcycling is sexy and fun, but dangerous!! If you are really considering riding, don't fuck around with your well being! Go to these guys and get prepared!! Here's the bonus, if you pass the class, you get a waiver from the dmv and do not have to take a road test. WHAT!!!! Wow! Two day MSS BRC - Done ! What an experience. Our instructors were Andrew (yoda) and John. How they bring that level of enthusiasm, serious information, impromptu comedy wrapped in support is astounding. Trust me I do training. I specifically want to say that everyone is treated like a blank canvas. I was the only female in my class and I was never treated differently. My sister and I were looking for a motorcycle school, and each found MSS on our own independent search, so we signed up for the 'Two Day Basic course with NYS DMV waiver'. Initially, at first booking this, $350 for two days, seemed like a HEAVY financial hit. It's essentially 5 components; Online self study instruction/testing at your own pace, then 2 days of 2 sessions each day, a classroom portion, then 'ridercoach' supervised skills/drills instruction on a private course, mixed with breaks, lunch periods, along with a with a 'expletive' amount of fun. The class was varied ages, Guys & Gals with cycling experience ranging from never motorcycled, to owning bikes for 10 years. Joseph, our main instructor, was on point. Knows his stuff, book wise, and streets wise.. Very realistic and common sense approach to riding, your personal saftey depends on the knowledge he can instill into your noggin while your under his wing, and he does it in a very personable and relatable way.. Along with Joe, he was assisted by Schamuel, and Andrew aka Yoda, each with their own different approach and techniques, so by the end of the course, everything you've heard about was covered multiple times, explained multiple different ways. Something is going to sink in. Most people I know, learned to ride by jumping on a friends bike, and having a go.. Yes, you can do that still. The problem is, when you encounter a 'situation' when riding, your going to be required how to solve your problem, off your limited experience and knowledge, in seconds. All the YouTube vids and motorcycle mags you consume aren't building your physical skill set and confidence either. Taking the MSS class, you'll KNOW your possible options before hand, feel comfortable executing severe swerve or braking action, before you need to put a plan into motion. The MSS program is a nationally accredited saftey school, requiring instructors to meet MSS's own skills and saftey criteria, and also be NYS DMV certified motorcycle instructors; (As a 'saftey' program, also qualifies you for insurance discount) This is NOT a 'teach to the test' program. Yes, you will have all the skills needed for handily passing the testing portions, but you'll also have about tenfold the motorcycling knowledge you actually need, for them, a good head start on a long, safe, fun, activity. Upon completing the class, $350 I paid seems a bargain. ONE incident while motorcycling, whether its equipment damage, damage to someone else's property, or the worst case if all, personal injury to yourself or even death, all would be more expensive, so I feel this is probably the best money I'll spend on motorcycling. This review is a complete rewrite of what I had previously, which was written after I had just failed the Basic Rider Course and was feeling pretty upset/salty about it. The school reached out to me after I flunked and arranged a (complimentary) lesson and the retest. All in all I have a few things to say. 1. Ultimately, the problems I had are problems with the BRC and not the school. It is an aggressively paced course and is very sink or swim. I would temper your expectations if you don't already have riding experience or don't think you'll succeed instantly. That being said, you will still learn a lot. The website for the school recommends taking lessons in advance of the course. I suppose that could help, but frankly, consider taking lessons after the course, succeed or fail, as you'll have no clue what you need to work on until after you've ridden for a while. 2. I had a number of instructors throughout the course, but I took private lessons with Andrew (Yoda) after I failed. This guy is about as good a teacher as they get. He's perceptive, patient, and offers extremely effective strategies for success. The BRC framework does not offer a lot of one on one instruction, so these lessons after the fact were incredibly helpful. 3. You may need to practice on your own. I was really only able to "get it" after about of week of practice in a parking lot with my wife's bike. Not everyone will have this opportunity, but then again, not everyone will need it. With all this in mind, the MSS is a good business that seems committed to helping students succeed. I wouldn't give up if you struggle with the BRC, as you can definitely come back and pass with a little extra work. read more

The only reason they get one star is because of the bikes NOT the instructors. The instructors were amazing to work with and super knowledgeable about the course and the requirements to teach new riders. They really helped break down all the necessary information in a way that was exciting to learn and not just information overload. The bikes on the other hand were in very poor condition. As said in a previous review one of the people in my class had a shift lever snap off completely mid way through the licensing test and had to get an entirely new bike. He did not pass the test but he was also given a completely different machine to get used to on the spot. As a beginner you can imagine how uncomfortable that may be especially on test day. A lot of the handling on the bikes was very poor and you can tell they were beat and broken up. The class next to us had the newer bikes so they had no problems with the course where as for us I believe we continuously ran into issues because of this. Overall a really amazing course if you just take the instructors into consideration but the bikes need an upgrade ASAP. Five stars to the instructors!! Shout out to Andrew St. John a/k/a Yoda and Fizel, I learned more than I expected to and I'm safer for it. You guys are passionate about teaching motorcycle skills and safety, and great at it. The class began with 10, three students had balance issues and could not manage the exercises, I saw the instructors patiently work with them while balancing instruction with the rest of us. Rarely write reviews but if a review helps save someone's life one day - that's worth it right? 2-Day Rider School: - I have some scooter and zero motorbike experience - Joseph was our classroom instructor - Joe's 40 years of riding experience in exchange for some of your time and $350 is a really good deal! - Very forthright and insightful discussion on the risks of riding and how to attempt to manage those risks - Classroom portion is manageable and paced right to not become bored - You can get a lot more out of these classroom sessions if you ask questions and participate; Joe always took a lot of time to answer questions and use those as a jumping off point to explain other concepts that might not have been covered otherwise - In my opinion, there's just not enough range time for absolute beginners but that's the way the class is designed so it is what it is - Despite best efforts - FAILED the skills test; instructors were very nice about it and encouraged me to come back and take the (free) retest after some more instruction Additional Instruction: - Enter Frank! - Totally got me on track with 1 x two hour lesson and 1 x one hour lesson - Super patient and when it all clicked - it clicked - After a while Frank just kind of hung out and let me just run drills over and over again ; offering small advice here and there when he saw something going wrong The Re-Test: - Test was run by Andrew (Yoda) - One of the coolest guys ever - totally chill and got everyone (3 people) in re-test to just RELAX - Lots of pre-test practice and then the test... - Passed easily and with totally different understanding of how to ride a bike Summary: - These guys really care about you riding safely. To use the class language: their emotional commitment to helping you ride safely is a 10! - As some reviewers note they do bark at you occasionally but let's face it this isn't a tickling match - they are trying to instill in you discipline that may save your life one day - This is obviously not just a job but a passion for them - They all speak exactly the same language so no matter how many teachers you have; the experience is exactly the same - If you are an absolute beginner, maybe consider taking some pre-lessons; your call but of my class at least 3 of 9 didn't make it. Candidly some of the people who did make it - I wouldn't want to be them on the street. I am much happier with riding now given the class and 3 hours instruction that if I'd somehow passed the first time By writing this, I'm hoping to get some Karma points (as Joe would put it) for just making one person stop and think that they should take a safety class rather than just trying to pick up motorcycle riding from the street...every instructor has a titanium rod stuck somewhere in their body - some of them recently - they have decades of riding experience; why would you risk not learning from them? Took the 2-day basic riders course including license test - it was great. Instructors (Monica, Adam and Ray) were nice and intelligent, helpful and open with any questions. Our class was a mix of people who hadn't ridden before and people who had some experience, also a good mix of riding styles. Tips? On my lunch break, one hour was enough to check out some great food options: Sonny's Heroes and True Flavorz. This was the excuse I needed to go here and they were great. True Flavorz is a tru gem. Also, bring a drink because the machine is $1.75, plus they have a fridge you can store your bottle in. read more

KELVIN KU IS THE BEST THERE IS! I was super excited to learn about riding motorcycles but at the same time, ridiculously nervous and scared! I arrived at the site to learn and not only was the team very helpful and gave us a good run through, but it was who I was paired up with that really sealed the deal. Mr. Kelvin Ku really made me feel at ease and educated me A LOT on the bike and the most important things for beginner riders to know. He showed me the ropes and really knows his craft! I began to feel more and more comfortable and I have to say, even confident that everything Kelvin was telling me will certainly stick! With the positive and contagious energy he had, my nerves were put to rest and this instant jolt and boost of energy overcame me! There was not one question I asked that was left unanswered by Kelvin. He was able to give me the best answer there was and not afraid to correct me. He instilled a new sense of thinking when it came to riding motorcycles and he stressed the importance of safety and what to do if you are (God forbid) ever in danger. OK.. I spend the weekend there for my MSF, it was worth every penny, keep in mind I have never ridden a motorcycle in my life, basically i was very clueless about it and trust me when you start learning then you realize it is not easy to ride a bike but it s really exiting. Took the Introductory Motorcycle Experience in Spring Creek Brooklyn with Steve - It was kind of a hike to get out there, but I'm glad I did! The setup is super-basic- it's a small trailer on an empty lot... porta-potty for your "facilities" - but hey, it's motorcycle school, whaddaya expect? The course consisted of some classroom video watching, discussion with the instructor, and some very basic on-bike time. I was SO glad I took this course when I got to my Basic Rider's Course - it made me feel a lot more confident that I wouldn't drop the bike or do something stupid... overall a great experience! read more

Still love this place! I got my license in October of 2018 by taking the two day class. It was an all women's course, with a woman instructor and it was just the best. Taught me how to ride a bike safely and by the time the 'test' for the waiver came along, I aced it. I love this place and all the people there.
