With the instructors - i would say try to stick with one person if it's possible (they have completely different approach - not everyone has the "champion - you can do - you are ready" attitude) Huge shoutout for AVERY JONES, even though he had short time, he could prepare me for the road-test what I took at first try.... To fully explain why Avery Jones is a wonderful driving instructor, allow me to talk just a little bit about myself. When I was 10, I was in a pretty bad car accident. I was lucky to come out of it unscathed- except for a lifelong fear of driving. I went to boarding school, then college in a town with tons of public transit, NYC... all places where I could get away with not having a license. Fast forward to my early 30s, I got sick of depending on other people to get me places. I found that not being able to drive conflicted with my love for travel and the pride I hold in my independence. I finally put my foot down and decided I would conquer a fear that was holding me back. I tried a couple of different instructors before I had the chance to take a lesson with Avery. During our first lesson, we didn't even start the car- he pointed out all the little things I was missing during setup that made a huge difference for me when applied. What differentiates Avery from most instructors is that he teaches you how to truly drive, not how to pass a road test. My brain could never retain all the "tips and tricks" because I wasn't understanding the fundamentals of how a car works as a machine and how you relate to other cars on the road. His commitment to creating a solid foundation is helping me slowly but surely defeat my anxiety and feel more confident at the wheel. On top of his excellent curriculum, Avery has a truly inspiring presence as a coach. You can tell that teaching is his passion and his calling. Thanks to some of the amazing folks at Drive Rite Academy, I passed my driving test at Red Hook on the first try :") Shoutout to the incredible instructors at the Prospect Heights location who helped make that happen!! I came into this journey with zero driving experience. I ended up taking around ~10 lessons over about 2/3 months consistently, with a variety of instructors--each one with their own vibe--and after trying out (almost) everyone, I found a few I really clicked with. Some weren't quite my speed, but that's part of the process lol. Major shoutout to Avery, who brought such great energy to every lesson and really helped boost my confidence leading up to the road test. I can see why its so hard to get time with him because he really is incredible!! Highly recommend! I also had awesome experiences with David (I took the online 5-hour course with him too) and Jonathan--all super kind, patient, and helpful. I booked a driving lesson three weeks ago. Two days before the lesson I was notified by email that the lesson would now be 15 minutes earlier. The morning of the lesson I was notified by text that the meeting point would be moved a block away due to heavy construction. I showed up early for my lesson, and waited at the designated location but the driving instructor never showed up. read more

Had a great experience initially with signing up for classes and road test and really liked that they are more or less flexible with a lot of reminders as well. HOWEVER, As someone who has maybe driven three four times in 10 years, and had no experience with driving in NY, I had high hopes in getting much more comfortable in traffic after my driving classes. I had 2 instructors, Charlie and Jay- Charlie gave me some good tips, however his attitude was not encouraging at all. He ended up the class telling me that " I have balls to take the road test in 2 days". Jay just did not seem engaged from the beginning, not sure if he was having a bad day but he proceeded to tell me that the 3 second wait at the stop sign is not a true rule and even though I emphasized that I want to practice the parallel parking he was keen on just driving around and finish up after 2 tries. I passed on my first try and can say that I felt infinitely more confident during the road test than with the 2 instructors. Again, not sure if they just had a bad day, but driving classes are supposed to be taken to increase your confidence not the other way around. read more

I finally passed my road test! Took it at Red Hook a few days ago, and not only survived it, but passed! This was my second try. For the folks who've struggled to get their license - all hope is not lost! My student driving history was spotty and inconsistent at best with long gaps in between over the course of several years, and Drive Rite (Prospect Heights) was the third driving school I'd been with. There was no condemnation or judgment even after I stopped taking lessons with them (after failing my first try in 2019), only to return in late 2023 due to the pandemic and life stuff. AVERY JONES was the ace driving instructor who helped me most this time round, and the one who helped me slay my nemesis - the left turn at intersections. One of the hallmarks of a great teacher is that he never assumes students know more than they really do. Avery will repeat information and explain as many times as you need, encourage you to ask questions, will help understand WHY you do what you do behind the wheel, and expose your weak points just by virtue of the way he approaches lessons, asks questions, and is just genuinely curious. Plus, depending on what kind of lesson you have with him, you may get pop-quizzes, instructional field trips (yes, I said field trips), and behind-the-wheel DRILLS so that you grow in CONFIDENCE , UNDERSTANDING, and SKILL. Drive Rite's online booking system is convenient and easy to use, but available slots fill up quickly. I thought about docking a star for this, because students are likely to get frustrated, and I know the frustration well. You'll have to grab up driving appointments way ahead of time or you'll end up like I was in 2019, having to book lessons with several driving instructors. Fortunately, each instructor I've had has been super helpful in his/her own way, but it's best to stick with one instructor to build good habits and consistency. Thanks Drive Rite! read more

Drive Rite's instructors may be excellent, as many reviewers seem to think. But this review is specifically about their service where they schedule a road test for you, and their angry, unprofessional phone support. People should know that this service basically amounts to a scam, charging $100 or more for a service that the DMV offers for free on their website. What Drive Rite advertises on their website is that they will work with the DMV schedule a date for your road test. What they don't tell you is that they (Drive Rite) will ignore any directives you give them about your availability, and then if you need to request a new date, that comes with another $50-$100 charge. They hide that the DMV, who actually conducts the road tests and keeps the official schedule, allows you to cancel and reschedule your tests for no charge, as long as you do so at least 3 days in advance. Just as bad as charging a high price for a borderline fraudulent service, is the treatment you get when you call them. Here's what happened to me: After I was already $125 in the hole on their scheduling service, and following several attempts to contact the company via voicemail and email, I finally talked to a customer service representative on the phone. This individual did the following: 1) Told me she didn't believe me when I said I'd left them multiple messages (right off the bat!) 2) Repeatedly tried to speak over me on the phone, raising her voice to me 2) Told me that it was my fault that the I couldn't use the dates they gave me, even though I communicated my availability to them well in advance 3) Told me it was my fault that they cancelled the other date I had scheduled without informing me 4) Told me that they had no obligation to inform me about any changes in scheduling 5) Told me if I wanted any more assistance, I had to pay an additional $50. Fortunately, I discovered before I paid them any more money, that I could go to https://dmv.ny.gov/schedule-road-test to get the same service offered by Drive Rite, minus the lying and verbal abuse. Pros: -- Great instructors with clear and specific feedback -- Knowledgeable instructors with insight on road test/ road test sites, practices and examiners -- Fair pricing/ packages for most highly regarded BK driving school so good bang for your buck *did gold package with the online pre-licensing class, 8 45 min lessons (only attended 3, one the morning of test) and car for road test -- Wide history/ reputation (found helpful tips in the Yelp and Google comments/ reviews from previous customers alone) Passed at Red Hook on first try. Had lessons mostly outside of the school with my family but did 3 lessons with Drive Rite, 1 with Ariel at Flatbush and 1 with Sue & 1 with Jay at Prospect. I recommend this road test site, just beware of narrow roads, pave markings, and bike lanes. Ariel was extremely helpful and supportive with mindset/ confidence in driving and affirming what you were doing well. Just made it easier and made me more confident in my abilities. Perfect for new/ nervous drivers. I arrived pretty late to my lesson with Sue and she seemed irritated or tired, tried not to take it personal, but was helpful in practicing parking for the 20 mins. Though the irritability/ energy, even if I was late or if tired, made me a bit more anxious as a student so have to work on the poker face so student feels calm. Jay was helpful in fine tuning parking, blind spot checks and being mindful of bike lanes the day of test. Cons: -- Booking process, as mentioned in last review. Though it seems to be the trade off, to avoid the calendar being fully booked for months. Tho I feel they need to strike a better balance so there's more utility in the online scheduling system. -- Inconsistency in vehicles being used between lessons/ road test was also a drawback. (tho I could see that being a pro in that it forces u to learn to drive any car). -- Limited hours for lessons, should have later week night hours available (even if only in the spring/ summer), sun was setting @ 8pm the last 2 months and the latest appt is like 5, which doesn't give you a lot of time to get there from work. Forces you to take PTO/ an early dismissal if you work standard business hours. Should have a 6 or 6:30 slot at the least during certain seasons. -- Lack of communication when scheduling road test (didn't ask for my preferred availability or road test site, when I went to pick up the online certificate, I scheduled or in person and they didn't ask anything, just put me on a wait list to be scheduled and I thought they'd call me from there to collect that info since he didn't ask and just got an email eventually confirming time/ info) read more

Yesterday was my first day behind the wheel since the COVID lockdown in NYC. Before visiting Dean Street for my first lesson, I went to the school near Brooklyn College four times. If you are from Brooklyn or travel around Brooklyn, you should know the traffic around Atlantic versus Brooklyn College is different from each other! Around Brooklyn College, the neighborhood has less foot and vehicle traffic. While near Atlantic between the bikes, people, and other vehicles, any seasoned but out of season driver should be aware of these surroundings. My first time learning from Jay was unimaginably positive. Jay's tone of voice delivered an affirmative dialogue that encouraged me to boost my self-confidence. I could tell Jay had experience on the road. Yet, Jay did now show any sign of rude, critical, condemning behaviors or remarks. Jay brought an open mind to the learning experience and a congenial personality. During the session, Jay explained to me his desire to build the character of an agile driver. Jay illustrated to me body movements while verbally repeating phrases I could recall while driving to ensure my actions on the road are those of a safe driver. As a debrief, Jay met me where I am, and we connected quickly; I no longer dread sitting behind the wheel and driving. Suppose you are looking for a driving school or instructor. I'm a former student. I took lessons with Jay, who was a good instructor, and reliable. My 2 star rating is for their current COVID safety protocols and for their customer service. I'm high risk and wanted to finish out my lesson package, but requested that I work with an instructor who is fully vaccinated. The woman at customer service was completely unhelpful and rude. She told me they don't ask their staff, they don't require a vaccine (which is fine under current NYS law, I acknowledge that) and that she wouldn't allow me to check with an instructor first privately to find out if they are vaxxed or not. I asked for a refund since they are unwilling to accommodate me and she refused. This is NOT standard for many schools I spoke with in the neighborhood. Almost every other school I called in Brooklyn was able to tell me which of their instructors were vaccinated, and to explain what they were doing about safety. I have zero desire to be in a small, unventilated space for an hour with someone who won't disclose their vaccination status to me. I signed up with another local school who were only too happy to connect me with a vaccinated instructor. That's $1000 that went to another business because of Drive Rite's lack of safety protocols. read more

So as to not bury the lead, the 1 star is a result of the horribly mixed experience with the instructors here. If I just drove with Avery, this review would be 5 stars. I came into the lesson with some experience driving in Brooklyn and the man was helpful, clear, explained the reasoning behind every criticism/suggestion well and I felt much more prepared to drive after his lesson.   Unfortunately, Jay was the exact opposite and I'd leave him negative stars if I could. He was incredibly rude from the very beginning and would not explain the reasoning behind his instructions even after the fact (asked me to turn the wheel left and it took me three times asking afterwards why for him to finally explain that he wanted to avoid a pothole). Worst of all, he got into a road rage when someone cut us off from behind during my (admittedly slow) parking. He took the wheel from me, started driving into the other vehicle to make them go back and then GOT OUT OF THE VEHICLE without responding to me at all, where I wanted to just find another parking spot. Afterwards he got angry with me, completely ignored what I was saying and would not speak to me. To recount all of the issues that came with him during the 1 hr lesson would probably exceed the character limit here. Utterly horrible instruction and, as I write this, there are no spots open for the other instructor so I'll be looking elsewhere to complete my education as I do not trust any of the instructors at this school. The driving school itself is OK. I didn't have any issues scheduling lessons, but found it very difficult to get through to them via phone. No one picked up when called, their voicemail was full and they didn't call back till hours later. Same with the intercom at their office. Overall this wasn't a big issue for me, but getting in touch to check where the instructor was when they were a couple of minutes late was impossible. read more

I liked this school- good personnel, everyone is nice and knowledgeable. My favorite instructor is Jay, he is a super cool person and his directions are clear and to the point. I just passed the road test today on my first attempt. I took 11 classes, I had a driving license from a different country, but haven't been driving for more than 10 years, so it was all new to me. I also practice a few times a week with my husband. If you are new to driving , I believe package with 10 classes is enough for getting a good comfort level. I would also suggest take classes either every day or every other day, you will get better faster. Good to have steps ( parallel parking, 3 point turn, STOP sign) written down and go over it a few times, so it will stay in your head. Once you know the steps, then you can polish your skills. Jay, you are the best! Thanks a lot! The only criticism I have - it's very hard to reach the school via phone. I think management should work on it. Why are you reading this review when you could be booking lessons with Jay? He's booked and busy, sis. No, seriously, he's the best! He's a humble expert with a calming demeanor and never makes you feel rushed. Jay makes the most of the time allotted, and even if I've felt like I didn't do my best, he's very reassuring and makes it known that the good and the bad will balance out until the good greatly outweighs the bad. So happy with my experience at Drive Rite Academy!!! They are very professional and devoted to providing a great service. Thanks to the great instructors, I was able to pass the road test in Red Hook the first time! I had some driving experience from before but decided to do the Platinum package (20 lessons + 5 hour class + road test) in order to get as confident as possible. David made the 5 hour class very enjoyable - it was engaging and full of useful information on defensive driving. I took most of my driving lessons with Jay and Emmanuel in Prospect Heights over the course of 8 weeks. Both are excellent instructors!!! They are easy going, patient, made me feel comfortable driving, tailored the lessons towards my experience and performance, and provided a lot of encouragement. I had never parallel parked before and they gave an easy formula to follow. They focused not only on teaching me how to pass the road test but on how to be a good driver in general! I highly recommend both Jay and Emmanuel! I also took lessons with Washington, J.R., and Dane and had a positive experience with them all. From my experience, all of the Drive Rite instructors care deeply about their students' success. I took the road test in Red Hook and passed it the first time! On the day of the test, Jefferson drove a few of us to the test location and on the way there reviewed a lot of tips on how to do well. The test itself lasted for about 10 minutes and consisted of 2 left turns, 2 right turns, parallel parking, and a 3-way turn. After passing the road test, I signed up for a highway lesson with Jason in the Flatbush location. Jason was very patient and gave a lot of helpful advice!
