Valeriy is The Man! At first I was skeptical about all these positive reviews, I mean, the reviewers almost unanimously award 5 stars and were overly enthusiastic. It sounded too good to be true! My feeling didn't improve as the first session I booked with Valeriy through their website last January 2010, having paid via Paypal, ran into some difficulties-- weather was bad one time, Valeriy was sick another, that it led to a couple weekend cancellations. My expectations were pretty low at this point but at least I'd paid only for one 60 minute session and was willing to write up the loss. A couple weeks after that first booking, I had my first session with Valeriy and from the very first minute, I was aware being in the hands of a master. Valeriy's tone and manner of speaking is calculated to put you at ease and soothe your nerves while he immediately directed me to go to the Belt Parkway and face the fear of highway driving. As a 40+ year old ledy who'd last driven over 20 years ago in my home country for a few times (and very unsafely I must add), I realized I had a lot of unlearning to do. In some ways, it's a little more difficult than learning from scratch because of the "cultural conditioning" observing driving behavior back home. Valeriy is an expert in zeroing in on bad behavior and, to this day, his voice rings mantra-like in my ear. Whereas others might've thought parallel parking the most difficult technique to learn with me, it had to do with other things. For example, in my country, if you make a broken U turn, you better get out of the way as quickly as possible as everyone else drives aggressively. That led me to "prepare the wheel" before shifting to reverse. While that doesn't sound too dangerous, the fact that I did this hastily often caused me to overlook checking for incoming traffic on my right. Valeriy noticed this immediately and corrected it at the source-- after turning towards the curb, don't rush, shift to reverse *then* turn the wheel, look both ways and back, then back up, look both ways again (the part I often forgot) then turn in and go forward. I had a few more bad habits and Valeriy would always point them out. Especially helpful was the "driving simulations" he'd do and throughout the next five sessions we did, I watched my score go down from the grossly failing 90 all the way to the "barely passing" score of 30. That was the "simulated" last score I had before my road test and Valeriy wasn't entirely pleased but schedule-wise, the die was cast and the road-test had to be done. So last April 1st, 2010, Valeriy picked me up to go to Staten Island and I took the exam. While the examiner sat with me in the car, I tried to remember Valeriy's presence and it had a calming effect on me. But this was all up to me now. I knew the areas where I had problems with and managed to avoid them, e.g. passing a Fedex truck that was double parked on a two-lane street and my usual trouble with the broken U turn. I aced the parallel parking (using Valeriy's technique-- best to learn this from him!) and it posed no trouble at all. When the road test ended, the examiner told me I had passed but the receipt he gave me had dinged me for one mistake. Coming out the car, Valeriy approached me with a huge smile on his face and said congratulations. I said the results weren't perfect and he said-- remember he wasn't in the car with us and couldn't have seen it-- "yeah, you make short turn."-- and sure enough, my error was "Poor judgment - Turning." On the ride home, I tried to remember the reasons why it took me so long to get over the essential skill of learning how to drive. Unlike a teenager who takes driving lessons and only has to deal with "fear," an adult like myself also has a good amount of deeper "shame." This review is in response to the review left by Karen Z. I must say that I was very surprised to read this review and as a result, was compelled to write a reply on this issue. Neither I, nor the school have ever had to deal with any complaints before, as it is clear from other reviews and other places on the web we try our hardest to satisfy our clients and help them to achieve their goals. Let me start by saying customer satisfaction and feedback is extremely important to us. Based on our other reviews on this site, others, and on personal feed back from our students, it is clear that people appreciate our efforts. Karen took lessons with me in the summer or 2011 and never completed her training. I would like to address Karen's comment on me taking her on the highway and steep, narrow, neighborhood hills. We at Left Turn Driving School, focus our training with the believe that our students would eventually tackle the rough roads of NYC, which include highway driving, busy intersection driving, changing lanes and merging, and driving through challenging areas, situations, under day and night driving and in rain, snow and ice. Our students quickly see that we don't just give them the bare minimum to pass the road test, but give them the maximum to become good drivers. The overwhelming majority of our students appreciate the fact that we do not simply drive them around an empty parking lot or a road that has no traffic or pedestrians. Regarding the issue of timelyness, we serve students from Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Manhattan, Bronx, Eastern Long Island, Eastchester, Westchester and northern New Jersey. Because of this we are not always able to arrive exactly on time to our lessons. To compensate for this WE WILL ALWAYS PROVIDE THE PRACTICE TIME PROMISED AND USUALLY MORE. Karen was also provided exta time to compensate her. Lastly, I would like to address Karens comment on my being angry/frustrated with her lack of progress. We have tricks and techniques to motivate and to push people to do better, which usually have great results, also we generally have a friendly/casual relationship with our students. I have never yelled at a student, nor have ever, to the best of my knowledge, caused anyone to feel angry, upset, frustrated or even cry, after any lesson. Usually most of our students are either laughing with us, smiling or are focused carefully on their tasks. After reading Karen's comment, I felt it was my responsibility to make things right and/or compensate her in any way that I can. I have called Karen many times, left several messages, wrote her several letters and had the school receptionist do the same. We received no reply to any of our attempts. If she indeed had this bad experience at our driving school she should let us know, which she has not. I make sure that every student has my personal cellphone as well as the school's number. It is extremely regretful to see any student go to a popular review site instead of contact me or the school directly if they have any issues. I just passed my road test - and that's no small feat - and I will forever be grateful to Left Turn Driving School. I found everything about this school outstanding - in particular my instructor Valeriy who went beyond the call of duty in ensuring that I was prepared for everything - the five hour class, road signs, discipline, safety on the road, and ultimately passing the road test. Valeriy is an excellent instructor, a true gentleman and a very patient teacher. He will teach you everything you need to know - not only to pass the test, but to become a good and safe driver. He picks you up from wherever you are and drops you back. The key to working well with Valeriy is communication: ask him questions and discuss with him a package that's right for you. Since I was flexible with my time, we ended up switching classes around to suit both our schedules, but if you are pressed for time and you would rather stick to the class schedule strictly, please discuss this with Valeriy and make your wishes clear. On the day of the road test, Valeriy had to drive me to Westchester to take the test - cos that was the nearest available location at the time of scheduling - and throughout the drive I was a nervous wreck. On arrival, I got even more nervous cos the streets and signs and spaces all appeared new to me compared to Brooklyn. I was very impressed at how Valeriy was able to calm me down, gave me a quick run at the actual test location, and remained positive throughout. I should also mention that Valeriy is a professional - I felt that I was in good hands throughout. After booking for me the road test, he double and triple checked it on the day of the test. I still can't believe I just passed my road test on my first try. It is all thanks to wonderful instructors and staff at Left Turn Driving School! I went from not knowing how to start a car to getting a license in 6 weeks. The appointments for classes were easy to make and change online, through the instructors, or by just calling the school. The package deal was great for beginners like me - I ended up getting [ten 45 mins class + 5 hours class + road test] package, and supplemented with more classes. Diana, the administrator extraordinaire, was super friendly and helpful. She was flexible in accommodating my scheduling needs. For the instructors, I had Alex and Anastasia. They both accommodated my classes to my skill level. Alex was nice, lighthearted, and taught me basics of driving in easy steps. When I encountered a difficulty in certain area (turning, that is), he was patient enough to let me practice it until I got it right. He also made me aware of the road conditions and potential hazards. Yes, he is often late, but I didn't mind as he texted me beforehand. Anastasia was very professional, knowledgeable, and patient with me. She was detail oriented, and she made sure that I not only pass the road test, but also be a safe driver. That said, I also appreciated that she isolated points that examiners look for in the test. An hour before the actual test, she let me practice driving around the test location, to make me feel more comfortable with the area. Without that, I probably wouldn't have passed! I highly recommend Left Turn Driving School to anyone who is trying to get a license or simply be a safer driver. On 03/14/2012 I passed my road test on my first attempt Valeriy was my instructor and sometimes I unintentionally tested his patience by doing what he told me not to do. A major challenge for me was parallel parking. It became an issue because I was trying to memorize the turns. Valeriy realized what I was doing and told me that this can't happen and my focus should be to think of the position I would like the rear or front of the car to go in and then turn the wheel accordingly. His advice made the world of a difference as he was spot on. Valeriy is a stickler for driving properly and safely. He brings the simplest mistake to your attention even if he has to repeat himself over and over. With that he reminds you of what you should have done. Ensure that you do as Valeriy says and you will be well on your way to passing your test. Trust his judgment when he tells you whether or not he thinks you are ready for your test. When he felt I was ready he gave me a mock test which I had failed because at that time I was trying to memorize the turns to the parallel park. Before the mock Valeriy explained the point system and when I was through we discussed the points deducted and the reasons. Valeriy and I agreed that my next lesson would be scheduled couple days prior to my test date so that we would focus mainly on my parking. This was done and I was well prepared. Embrace Valeriy's criticisms as you would his praises, because you will receive them both. Valeriy is an excellent and patient instructor! It's August 25th and my road test is 5 days away, and I haven't even sat behind the wheel of a car. I felt like I was screwed, but not until I called up Left Turn Driving School. I called them and asked if it were possible to get some lessons and a car for the day of the road test, and to my surprise they were able to book me in such short notice. I was skeptical that 3 lessons would be enough, but sure enough, with a great instructor like Alex, I was able to pass my road test on August 30th with flying colors! I had Alex as my instructor form Left Turn Driving School, and all I can say is that I had some awesome driving lessons. Alex turned out to be pretty cool. He was very patient with me and always kept a calm demeanor, which helped keep my nerves in check while driving. He expressed to me the importance of planning ahead while driving and helped me understand what mistakes I made on the road and what I needed to do to make improvements. I enjoyed every lesson with Alex as he is not only is a good driving instructor, but also a very knowledgeable individual, and kept the drives interesting. On the day of the road test, Alex took out a basketball from his car, while we were on the road test line, and let me dribble it around while we waited. I thought this was a very cool thing he did, as it helped calm me down before the road test. I was able to pass the road test with only 5 points off, and I have been enjoying driving all day after I passed! I highly suggest Left Turn driving school to anyone who is looking to get a license. Overall, my experience with Left-Turn driving school was very positive. Diana, the receptionist, was always friendly and made scheduling lessons pleasant. My instructor, Alex, was always very patient and explained things clearly. He often used humor to lighten the mood and reduce stress (I'm a first-time driver, so there was quite a bit of stress at first). He focused his lessons on what would be covered on the test, and took me to challenging areas which made driving on the road test a cinch. I was well prepared for the test and (although exceedingly nervous,) passed on my first try. To address some comments made by previous posters... Although Alex did show up late at times, he was always very fair in providing the full time-frame for the lesson (sometimes more). The one time he showed up about 30 minutes late (which, to be fair, was out of his control), he offered to make the lesson free. If it's important to you to stick to a schedule, this might be something to consider. For me, the quality of the lessons and the fact that I was always given the fully allotted time, made it more than worth it. Regarding the neighborhoods Alex took me to for practice, as I stated earlier, this not only prepared me well for my test, but also made the test seem easy. Personally, I'd rather struggle before the test, and breeze through the test itself. Also, looking back, I feel that driving on the highway during my second lesson (though a bit scary at the time), sped up the process of feeling comfortable behind the wheel. In subsequent lessons I felt a lot less nervous about simply being behind the wheel, and was able to focus more on what I was actually doing. read more

Today, 9/6/1013, I too became a licensed driver. I'd been through another driving school and had failed my test twice already so I was looking for a driving school that could handle the extreme anxiety I had built up from my previous failures as well as the ability to help me relearn to drive, but this time with actual explanations instead of blind memorization on which way and how many times to turn the wheel. From the pre-licensing class, straight through to the lessons, I couldn't have had a better instructor than Alex. I passed my test because he wasn't just looking to teach me how to pass a test, but how to actually drive, so that no matter what situation I was in, I could figure my way through it. So that license that I received was not just a testimony to my ability to pass a test, but a testimony to my ability to drive. Alex handled my anxiety problem with more patience than I believed possible. He talked to me and eased my anxieties to the point where even my parents noticed how much I had improved as a driver. In addition, he took me on the highway which was an endeavor I had planned to avoid even after I passed my test. Granted, at the time I stopped believing that I could ever pass. This was a really long review but I just had to say how truly fantastic the school and my instructor was, because this time last year, I had given up on ever becoming a licensed driver. I'd been going at it since I was 17 with nothing to show but disappointment. However, a week before my 21st birthday, I discovered that I COULD drive, and damn well, if my score was anything to go by. read more

I took my road test twice. The first time I took it was after practicing with family members. They helped a lot, but not enough to help me pass the first road test I took (in one of the most easiest road test sites, too). I then got 10 lessons from Left Turn Driving school (I would have gotten more, but I already knew how to drive). Valeriy wasn't that great. He let me drive on my own, but didn't really correct me much. He also didn't show up to two of our lessons and forced me to reschedule. Alex was amazing and his experience as a driving instructor shows. He was extremely patient with me and helped me get over my hesitation and fear while driving.He gave me all of the right pointers and expert advice while making me feel extremely comfortable behind the wheel. The second time I took the road test, it was in Long Island and with one of the toughest examiners there (there were 3 or 4 of them). I passed with 0 points (perfect score)! I was shocked and so was Alex, who told me about how tough that road test examiner is. I can honestly say that the driving instructions and fine tuning that Alex provided were what allowed for this possibility. That is why I would highly recommend taking lessons with Alex at Left Turn Driving school if you need to learn from scratch, fine tuning of your skills, or just needing to brush up on them. It's up to you how many lessons you take, but, from my experience, the more you take, the better. About 10 works best if you already have driving experience; possibly more if you're brand new. How can I not rate five-star after a successful road test today with my instructor Anastasia? I had zero driving experience before the classes, and only take 6-class package, and I pass at my first road test. They didn't sell more classes to me, even though I show my concern of taking more classes due to my non experience. Anastasia just said she would evaluate it after 6 classes, and at last of course she said I am good enough. That gives a feeling that they are doing their business honestly. Like many other beginners,I am a sensitive and nervous driver too. I drove super slowly at my first class, and Anastasia deed pushed me to speed up and sometimes pointed out my mistake a little bit loud. But all of these are in a polite and acceptable range. And actually I feel glad of her teaching way now, it helps me to overcome beginner's afraid of speed, and make me feel more comfortable at the speed of 25-30 when taking the road test. And usually what she speaks loudly is something important in the road test and normal driving. Her explanation is clear, though there are some misunderstanding between my Chinese English and her Russian English, we always can figure it out soon. So, if u speak good English or Russian, that would never be a problem. Like the other reviews say, she is always on time and patient. So take her, and enjoy the challenge of driving. Btw, I took one class a week, and practiced what she taught me with my hubby's car in the weekend, like 1hr. And 6 weeks later, I got the license. Good and efficient schedule! read more

I was extremely happy with the services at left turn driving school. I had never driven a car...ever, and as a young adult in my 20's, it was a little scary at the idea of learning to drive in NYC at my age. Left turn was recommended by a family member, and so I trusted their experience. In the beginning, I took a few lessons with Alex, which were decent, but I felt that we repeated the same thing, same location, same turns. I made a few mistakes over and over again due to being nervous, but I also knew that I needed a change in order to progress, so I requested Anastasia. First, I will not bash any instructor like I have read; just promote positivity, but Anastasia was who I needed from the start. She was patient in a way that helped me to relax and retain the information she delivered. She kept notes on my progress throughout all of my lessons and was not hesitant to let me know when I made mistakes that could cost me points on the road test. The idea was to make mistakes and learn from them as she would say. "You wouldn't want to have perfect driving all the way up to the road test!" Anastasia thoroughly explained the ins and outs to driving without reserve. She is punctual, flexible, and truly teaches students to be safe defensive drivers. I am happy about my lessons...AND I just passed the test because of her! Thank you. I had a lot of anxiety about driving for a long time so I was really selective when it came to choosing a driving school. In the end, I'm really glad that I chose Left Turn Driving School. Alex was my instructor and he was continuously patient, supportive, and understanding throughout the whole process. He's relatable and funny too, which is always nice. He knows his stuff, but more importantly, he is able to explain everything in a way that's really easy to understand. I didn't find out how many students Alex had taught until the near end of my lessons--let's just say it's a lotttttt of a students and most passed on their first try. Alex is the owner (co-owner?) of the business. I think there's just something inherently reassuring about working with the owner since you know he cares about his business but more specifically, he cares about his students. You would obviously be in good hands. Payment/scheduling/correspondence was all pretty easy. Also, they pick you up/drop you off for each lesson, which is great if you have a busy schedule since you won't have to travel to/from your lessons. Oh, and the free driving lesson on the day of your driving test is quite helpful--definitely helps with the nerves. Also, I was never pressured to take or to pay for more classes (something that I know my friends have experienced from other schools). Bottom line: Everything was great. I passed. He's happy. Today, July 8th, 2013, I became a licensed driver with the amazing instruction and help from Alex and Left Turn Driving School. Before I had come to Left Turn Driving School, I had been to several other schools in the New York City Area. Those other schools did not give me the adequate tools and instruction to be a proficient driver. However, Alex helped me pass the driving test the first time with Left Turn Driving School. Alex teaches his students with the greatest wisdom, professionalism, patience, and care. Alex makes sure his student's understand how to be a safe and skilled driver. I have never encountered such a professional and caring driving school as Left Turn Driving School. Alex teaches his students to approach driving with the greatest techniques and positive attitudes. Also, in the other schools I went to, the office was not always helpful. Talifa of Left Turn Driving School is considerate, helpful, and the epitome of professionalism. From the moment I encountered Left Turn Driving School, I only asked myself one question, "Why didn't I start taking my driving lessons with Alex, two and half years ago, when I started pursuing my license?" If I had, I would have saved myself much headache, and wasted time. Alex and Left Turn Driving School provide the best driving instruction possible. first I must say this review isn't about food, it's different. This is my review on my experienced with LTD, most importantly with Anastasia :-) She's been my instructor since day one-well day one as in my recent lessons. She was very patient with me. She taught me all the basics and was professional. Anastasia showed me how to start a car, even though I knew but she felt like showing me anyway. She also went through and showed me the signs in case if my car (one day) wouldn't start this is why and what to do in in case it happens to me one day. I was also taught what to do in certain conditions, because one of my lessons was after that last big snow we had sometime last month. I also had one of my lessons in the evening which was important because I understand and know how to drive when it gets dark. I would definitely recommend Anastasia to anyone who needs lesson. She's professional, consistent, patient and genuine :-) She made it possible for me to finally have my license today the 10th of February. I will also blog about my experience and will write the difference between LTD and other schools. I'm glad I chose this school over the other schools in Brooklyn. I took the road test for the first time today, and I passed! I chose the 10 lesson package, which included the 5-hour certification, the vehicle on the day of the road test, and the road test appointment. I learned a lot about driving and the road (and not just how to pass the test). The receptionists are super nice and remind you about your upcoming lessons. They also call to check up on you/make sure you're on track, which is definitely something that I appreciated. My main instructor was Alex, and he was awesome! He was on time for every lesson and was a good teacher. Whenever I made a mistake, he would teach me why it was wrong, what I should've done, and how to do it correctly. He was very patient and made sure I understood the mechanics and thought processes behind certain actions. Side note: so many of my friends have had instructors yell at them for making mistakes, and I'm thankful I haven't had the pleasure of experiencing that. I also had Selena for two lessons, and she taught me driving and k-turns. She was very knowledgeable and answered all of my questions. I was very confident with my parking and k-turns by the end of the day, and I'm glad I met her! All in all, I'm very happy with my experience with this school. I can't recommend it enough. read more

Alex is incredible! With the help of Left Turn Driving School, I was able to get my driver's license a bit late in the game. I had a lot of nerves from the start, but those were quickly dissolved with my experienced and extremely patient teacher Alex. I took a total of 7 lessons by an hour and a half and I think I paid about $500 in two installments and it was well worth the costs. Alex was always patient, and taught me a lot about driving(even on the highway) - I think more drivers in New York should take a few classes with him, as it seems they have all forgotten the rules of the road. I was very nervous on almost every driving situation, and Alex did everything he could to help me calm my nerves(He has a stress ball, and claimed to offer me Vodka for my nerves, it was really water). I passed my test on the first try and now I can safely navigate some of the toughest New York situations. I'm not sure I would have ever gotten my license without the help of such a knowledgeable and calm instructor. Growing up in NYC, there's rarely a need to drive, so when we were about to move to Long Island it was finally time for my wife to get her license. I am genuinely frightened for my life to ride with her, so I figured it was better for all of us to have a professional teach her. I looked through Yelp and other online sources for a good school and most either bad reviews or too many complaints or horrible customer service. This was THE ONLY PLACE THAT CALLED ME BACK AFTER I LEFT A MESSAGE. Her Instructor was Alex and he positively encouraged her from the start, taught her proper driving procedures and really made her a confident and safe driver. Just last week, Alex took her for her road test where she successfully passed the test on the first try. I don't know how you had the patience nor the calm nor in fact the desire to teach my wife like you did, cause you would have to pay me a whole lot more than what those classes cost to teach her, but I am really glad you did. Now I can actually relax a little when she driving. The only thing though is that she is now commenting on my driving. My experience at LTD was great! I did some shopping around online and was impressed by the packages they offered (including pick-up/drop off and use of car day of test) I am in my 30's and needed to learn to drive as I was relocating for work. I was very nervous my first lesson but lucky for me Issac was in the passenger seat. He was informative and taught me the skills I needed but also let me learn at my own pace and did not make me feel foolish for making mistakes. Due to my work schedule I had long breaks between lessons, sometimes making some lessons repeats but Issac never got upset with my lack of progress. I also had a month break before my pre-toad-test lesson and road test (I passed first time!) and Issac was great about really going over things that they look for on the test and also good city driving. I never felt any pressure to buy more lesson or do a package. I actually opted to do more and felt I always got for what I paid for and more. I am sure the other drivers are great but I can say if you are new or returning to the road Issac is your guy!!! read more
