My whole experience was spoiled by their receptionist who basically stole a class from me. Apparently she is rude to people too. This review is for April 2024, I was referred by a friend and got a 10 class package. My instructor was Leo, he is cool, patient and explains things clearly. I was able to surpass the fact that he is a smoker although he obviously doesn't do it in the car, the clothes will still have the smell. He was also late 10-20mins a couple of times due to traffic in his highway class, but I was alright with it even though I was almost late to my doctors appointment after that. I had a work emergency the day I was scheduled for my 9th class. I let the receptionist know and asked for my class to be rescheduled for another day or at best start 30mins or 1hr after. This receptionist was just so dumb a she kept repeating their protocols on cancellations, but obviously with an emergency you can't call 24hrs ahead so I asked for some consideration, she wouldn't budge or be humanely understanding. So I requested Leo to still come to pick me up for my lesson ON TIME even though I could be 30 mins late. I paid for the hour so it doesn't matter if he was there just waiting 30 mins. It was very stressful with her over the phone and she sent Leo later instead. I called Leo when I was home waiting for him, he said he was on his way (this was 30mins in). When I specifically asked for him to be waiting out for the hour. Doesn't matter if it was 30mins, 15mins or even 5mins class. I paid for it and he should have been waiting outside. On my 10th class he did apologize for the whole fuss but that class was gone, thanks to that stupid receptionist. Even Leo claimed that she was being rude to a few clients and perhaps due to the pregnancy hormones but that's not an excuse. This school left me with a bad taste. I regret referring one of my friends too. I didn't pass the test either which added to my frustration because that one extra class would have been very helpful. I decided not to waste more money on them after what that woman pulled off on me and I just rented a car to practice. Which has been better in my opinion. read more

This is actually the second time I took my driving test. But first time It was with a different school somewhere around 8th Ave (took over 28 lessons there) but still failed (had a total of 65-70points deducted). I did a few Yelp searches and I came by this driving school. I thought it was on the expensive end. But I have to say I learnt the most here. I wished I took my lessons here from the start! As I was reading the reviews and I noticed Ray was mentioned in almost every review. I have to say he is the best instructor that I've taken (I had over 3 instructors) . I wished I came across this school sooner instead of looking at the price points. It was very welcoming environment. Dana was always on top of her schedule (sent me reminders a day before) she's very nice and accommodating to the schedule. Or reminding me to schedule for a lesson. I never had issue booking for the instructor. (suggestion book a week in advance incase you are not as flexible with your schedule) I have to say that even from the beginning Ray was very honest on how many lessons I should take. He suggested only 3 lessons and I'll be set with the road test. But I wanted more lessons since I wasn't the most confident in myself (so ended up taking only 5 lessons) Ray gives the best suggestions on what you did wrong and corrects your errors. He will not set you up for failure if you take all of his suggestion and just listen to him. Honestly, if you are reading this review. Save yourself a headache on taking it anywhere else. I'm the type of person that researches through all my options before choosing the right place and Sun Rays Driving School was just perfect! I like to compare prices and read through reviews (yelp and Google) and this school had the best packages as well as the best reviews. You can call them for their latest pricing on their packages. I got the 16 lesson package (broken down into eight 1.5hr lessons) which also includes 2 road tests and a 5hr class (done over Zoom). I asked for Ray but since he has so many students, I was only able to do 1 lesson/wk with him which I was totally fine with. Scheduling was super easy done through texting/calling Dana. And depending on where you live and the time of day, your instructor may be able to pick you up for your lesson. Ray was great, A+++! He was very easy to talk to and always gave me really helpful tips. He's always attentive to your needs and so chill. It was my first time driving and he really helped build my confidence. After the first few lessons, I already felt comfortable driving and just needed more practice to polish up certain things and be 100% confident. My teacher didn't speak English but was able to give me tips and tricks for parallel parking, left and right turns, and broken U-turns that made me pretty much perfect at them. His reaction time is also pretty fast, which has obviously helped in a few instances. By what I THOUGHT was my 5th class, I felt confident and wondered why I even purchased a 16-class package. Btw it's a great price at only $365, which is why I chose it in the first place. Problem was, I found out by the next lesson that actually, I had completed 10 lessons already. See, each time I thought I was taking a 1 hour 15-30 min lesson, I was unknowingly doing TWO shorter lessons at once. My teacher didn't know this either; when we met at first, he would be like "this is your 2nd time?" "This is your 3rd?" so I thought 1 day = 1 lesson. Another example of poor communication was when the day of my road test arrived. My final lesson was to be that morning, 9:30 am, and my road test 1:00. I thought since the lesson would last until 11, I'd have time to eat lunch. To my dismay when I was picked up, my teacher also picked up 2 other students. We were all practicing for the road test, and so no one would have time to eat lunch. (Luckily we stopped by a deli and I bought something, because due to waiting for ALL of us to finish our road test, we didn't end up getting home until 3 pm...) The driving school also pressured me to take the road test. Only 3 weeks in, I was asked when I'd take it. I said I'm not so sure I was ready. Only a week later, they asked again. I then asked my teacher if I was ready, and he said yes. But I failed my road test the first time and the second time (which I took 2 days after) because I wasn't equipped to handle unfamiliar situations. I think the driving school also needs to be on top of regulations. - They told a student that she couldn't use her own car because it needs a secondary brake or hand brake. This is NOT true (I called the DMV to confirm). - They kept saying my permit was going to expire in October, but I told them repeatedly that it was extended until further notice due to COVID-19. - The law says one needs 50 hours of practice and 10 hours at night. There's a reason for this; I only had maybe 16 hours of practice, including the lessons, which is not enough. read more

I had the most nasty experience with this creepy instructor named Benson at Sun Rays driving school. On my last lesson with him he told me I should "become a sugar baby." Joking or not this is completely inappropriate and not something you want to hear when you're alone in the car with a man who's old enough to be your grandpa. I felt very uncomfortable. Before my next driving lesson he sent me this text message. I told the driving school I didn't feel comfortable and that he sent me this text message. THEY DEFENDED HIM AND HIS BEHAVIOR! Super straight forward registration, scheduling process. I called and Dana gave me all the information I needed regarding packages. Currently they are only doing hourly classes. I opted for the 5 hour package that came with 2 road tests which came out to be $300. Dana was super on top of scheduling, even when I wasn't. She always tried her best to accommodate the time requested. Payment was through Zelle and all scheduling & inquiries could be done via text. They send reminders the day before. My instructor was Alex. He was okay for the most part but was always late. However, he would offer to make up the lost time next time which was a plus. He was also a little confusing/contradicting on most instructions he provided (prob cus his English was not the strongest). I never felt fully confident with him. However, on the day of my road test which I also had a lesson that day, apparently Alex was no longer available. That made me super nervous as now I had to adjust to a new car and new instructor. But it ended up being a pleasant surprise. I had Benson the day of my road test and he gave me so many tips that I never knew. He's super chill, really passionate about driving and teaching how to drive safely & skillfully. We had many great conversations and really wished I had him all along! I had such an unpleasant experience here last year (pre COVID) with two rude instructors, and I won't be recommending this place to anyone honestly. During my time here, I had two instructors and they were both soo unpleasant to be around, especially as a new beginner driver. They made me feel very uncomfortable while driving. On my first lesson, I wasn't even taught basic skills/knowledge about driving a car, and instead I had to find out about it through an YouTube video. The instructor basically just threw me to fend for myself without any clear instructions. They were both so incredibly inpatient and would give up on me when I couldn't make a maneuver properly. Through my 5-7 lessons here, my instructors, without a fail, were consistently 5 minutes late. My second instructor seemed to pay more attention playing games on his phone than to my actual driving. Do I even need to mention the fact that I failed my road test both times? The only reason why I'm not giving this place one stars is because of the nice lady who helped me book all of my appointments! She was always very cooperative and mindful my schedule. I had a really good experiencing learning driving with this school. I would definitely recommend it to those who's searching a good driving school. The price is reasonable. They charge $480 for 10 hours+licensing course+2 road tests. Any additional hours with be $40 each. My instructor was Alex. He's just a really nice instructor. He's very patient with you. He explains every detail very clearly, from the different features of the car to the tips for roast tests. He understands that you're nervous first day on the wheel and is very reassuring. He is also very diligent. He sometimes may be late because of issues with his car or heavy traffic but he would make the time up for you when he is free (usually after all his lessons on the same day). He even gives extra time for you. I can feel that he truly cares about his students and want to help them pass the test. I unfortunately failed my test on first try (that's really on me because I was overly nervous and screwed myself up). But Alex told me to trust myself and helped me regain my confidence. I passed second try with only 10 points (shown in photos). Just follow what your instructor teaches you and you'll pass. Scheduling classes overall is pretty easy. The process is much more efficient if you pay with Zelle. They will remind you every week of upcoming lessons to make sure you don't forget. When I call to schedule extra classes/road tests, they're also very patient. The instructors will also do pick and drop if you're not too far from the school. All in all, very good driving school. My wife recently passed her driving test on her first try in February after taking 4 lessons with this driving school earlier in the same month. Her review is below: Lessons Sun Rays was recommended by a relative who passed her test on her first try after taking lessons with them. I ended up scheduling 4 lessons (one a week) with Ray. He picked me up in a Toyota Corolla, which is a nice medium sized car and happened to be the same model as my car so I was pleasantly surprised. For my first lesson, Ray gave me a brief lowdown on what was to be expected on the test. It was clear he knew what he was talking about, so I felt reassured. He also told me to practice driving as much as I could in between lessons to build up confidence, which I made sure to do. I found Ray to be very patient, responsive to my questions and he gave me useful feedback during lessons. He also had a very simple technique for parallel parking, which was my biggest worry initially. The 5 hour pre-licensing course was also completed at the school. Driving test Once I felt ready, the school booked the test for me. Ray said that the best place to take the test is at Staten Island as it is usually easier to pass there and there is also less of a wait to book the test. I readily agreed with taking it in Staten - I mean who wouldn't want to ensure a better chance of passing? The test was booked 2 weeks in advance in the morning on a Wednesday. On the day, he picked me and another student up from our respective homes and drove us to Staten. We got there early (note there's usually some waiting involved as it's a line system), but I ended up finishing my test before my designated slot. My test took exactly 10 mins and happily I passed! Ray drove us back and dropped me near my workplace. Conclusion Pros: Affordable rates and package deals; lessons are 1 hour long (some places are only 45 mins); my instructor (Ray) was friendly, always on time, knew his stuff, and taught me what I needed to pass; scheduling and pick up/drop off after lessons were flexible; lessons can be in English, Cantonese or Mandarin. Cons: Can't think of any! I was pleased with my experience with Sun Rays (very pleased with my result!) and would happily recommend this driving school in Brooklyn. read more

And this other time, we were driving and he pointed at a lady driver in front and said an inappropriate comment about her. Very weird guy. Such a creep. Also, they're quite flexible so you just gotta tell them your schedule whenever you're available. Before my second test, I took a couple of lessons with Michael. Highly recommend him!!! He taught me a lot of tips and tricks that I didn't learn before about parallel parking and 3 point turns. For parallel parking, he explains how to readjust if you are too close or too far from the curb which can be a bit difficult to understand. However, if you have trouble understanding, he will explain it again and again until you truly understand with no complaints. He is super patient and friendly! They schedule only a week out so you can't plan all your lessons out in advance. I had Mike as my instructor and he was awesome!
