I highly recommend Frank if you are a beginner and want a no-nonsense instructor. He is tough, but it's because he truly wants you to pass your road test. If you carefully follow and study his instructions, you will be well-prepared. I was extremely nervous throughout the process and honestly did not think I would pass but I did, all thanks to Frank (especially after failing my first road test 10 years ago). The reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because my first assigned instructor was very unprofessional and did not take the lesson seriously. At the end of the lesson, he even asked if he could call me, which felt inappropriate and left me with nothing learned. I contacted the receptionist, explained the situation, and asked to be reassigned, which is when I was paired with Frank. While I was grateful for the switch, I do feel the school should have provided me with a makeup lesson since my first one was a complete waste of time. That said, I'm very glad that with only 4 lessons, I was able to absorb enough from Frank to pass my test. I do believe that if I had been given a proper makeup lesson with him, I might have finished with fewer points deducted. read more

I don't normally write reviews on Yelp, but there are things that need to be addressed in this school that both the owner and those looking to use their services should know about. First, the staff were very friendly and their customer service is very good. No issues there. However, as good as this aspect of the school is, it failed in its most important department: teaching. When I first signed up for classes with Gold Success, I was expecting a Grade-A experience. After all, I did my research and many claimed this was the best driving school in Queens. Without a second notice I went down to the school and decided to book some lessons. Unfortunately, the first lesson that I got was my last. While I will not say the name of the instructor, there were times during the lesson when said instructor would be on their phone while on the road - during my very first lesson! Regardless of experience or not, this did not sit well with me as I am very happy that said instructor stopped me from a potentially dangerous incident that nearly occurred on the road during that particular day. It's a very good thing they were paying attention then! There were also times when I would make some mistakes and the instructor would suck their teeth and be visibly frustrated. I felt like they had no patience with me even though this was my first official lesson with them. Despite this, I nevertheless finished the lesson without incident, but it just left a terrible impression on me as someone who was looking to get my driver's license as soon as possible. A few days later I was told that this same instructor had canceled our next class and I was then re-scheduled with another instructor who called in sick last minute. When I attempted to call the office so I wouldn't lose the money on the lesson, I could not leave a voicemail as their messages were all full. At this point, after speaking to others of my experience during that lesson, I decided to take the hint and back out. After emailing the owner Eric (who understandably tried to improve the situation), I requested a refund (as of the writing of this review, I am still awaiting it, but will update it when I receive it in the amount agreed upon). This is a very unfortunate experience that I had with Gold Success Driving School, but I also realize that when I am behind the wheel of a vehicle, I am not only responsible for my own life, but for the lives of others around me. Unfortunately, this school failed at meeting this standard for me as someone looking to take driving seriously. I cannot recommend this school based on my personal experience, but I hope that going forward, they can make a better impression for future students. I was looking at Yelp for reviews for driving schools and found Gold Success Driving School; after a quick phone call and a visit to the school and speaking with Eric, I decided to purchase the 10 lesson package right away. I requested Frank based on the reviews, and he had quite a long wait list, and I didn't get to take my first class with him until almost a month later. But I decided that I wanted and needed a great instructor, especially as an adult who should have learned to drive before my prefrontal cortex was fully developed, lol. Well, Frank was fantastic. He was infinitely patient with me, someone who had never touched the wheel of a car before taking a lesson with him. He's also very kind, friendly person in general, and with every lesson offered many helpful tips to not only pass the test, but also to be a better driver in life. The day of the DMV test, I was super nervous and had my last lesson with him scheduled earlier that day. (The school usually schedules your last lesson the same day as your test). But all my lessons with Frank paid off! I passed the test on my first try! Super thrilled and am super grateful to Frank. THANK YOU, FRANK!!!! I've had a really good experience with Gold Success. With so many options, I wasn't sure if they would be any better or worse than all of the other ones in Queens. My classes ended up all being with the instructor Frank Dao. Frank was serious, but friendly. He's easy to talk to, and genuinely interested in seeing you pass the road test. I was particularly nervous about the reversing and parallel parking. Frank assured me that it was easy and told me I just need practice. He was right. With his instruction, it was much easier once I understood exactly what I needed to do. I'm happy to report that I was able to pass the road test on the first try! It was really important for me to pass since I am moving out of state and will need to be able to drive in my new town. If I can drive in NYC, then I think I'll be fine anywhere else! Frank is the best instructor! I have always wanted to have Frank as an instructor but he has been so busy. I failed 1 time last month then I contacted to school to reschedule me with Frank. I only have 45 minute session to practice before road test. I told Frank that if I would fail again , I would not be regret because he did his best! He fixed all the points that I got last time. Upon realizing my permit was expiring at the end of this year, I made it a goal to finally get my driver's license because really, five years should have been enough to accomplish this task. I had previously done two lessons about four years ago at another driving school, but I was essentially a total newbie. I never had a family car growing up; public transportation was my best friend all my life. I went with the 5-lesson package initially; scheduling was a breeze with the friendly and helpful Alana. Hector was my instructor for all my classes, and his temperament matched well with mine. Calm, a dry sense of humor, and very knowledgeable. It became apparent around the third lesson that I would need more classes; I added four more to make nine lessons in total. Then came the road test, nearly two months to the day from when I first signed up, and while my final class was mediocre at best (nerves are a beast), I somehow got my act together and passed! 1 is also too much for this driving school. This instructor Charles Lui was the worst. I have been practicing for road test on my own vehicle but I came here for the road test. The instructor was very unprofessional. When I was fixing mirror and seats he told me not touch stuffs in his car. He dint teach me anything for 90 minutes. I did everything on my own. When we reached road test site he made a comment to the DMV instructor saying "Don't break my car. She is dangerous". I became very nervous and unmotivated. Came into this school with no driving experience at all and I passed the road test for the first try! I signed up for the 5 session class. I highly recommend HECTOR. Update: I passed my road test first try! I reviewed the biz after I had not so nice experience first lesson. Since then- Eric and instructor I was paired with was wonderful! After my complaint to Eric after my very first lesson. He paired me with Robinson. And I had all my lessons with him. He was very good at explain things and give you a constructive criticisms (not yelling)and the tips and tricks he teached me about parallel parking and 3 point turns, I used it and it works every times. Mind you, I am so new and never touch a car in my life. I had 8 lessons with Robinson. My first 3 lessons I barely can turn but each weeks I was improving slowly. On my last lesson before my test I was paired with Jordan and he was very good too. So far I think my first lesson it's just an unfortunate pairing. I would recommend this school to anyone just make sure to contact Eric or the school if you think the instructor you paired with is not feeling right for you. So, I'm an anxious 30+ year old woman who had ZERO driving experience before getting behind the wheel of a car with Gold Success. I JUST PASSED MY DRIVING TEST TODAY ON THE FIRST TRY AND NOW HAVE MY LICENSE, HELL YEAH! I signed up for just 16 lessons. While I'm not exactly going out to invest in that '69 blue Pontiac Le Mans I've been crushing on since high school just yet, I am officially one step closer :) GS has the cheapest rates combined with the best reviews - I shopped around. The company is Chinese owned and operated - do not let that dissuade you from using them if you don't speak the language. I had two instructors, Frank and Al, and both were easy to understand and are extremely proficient behind the wheel. They also listen to your feedback, if you need them to speak softer or more slowly just say so! They both have a direct way of communicating that you learn to appreciate, but at first can sound loud and a little brash if you're the timid sort. Don't let this dissuade you, they're cool guys with a sense of humor and are much gentler than the jerks you're gonna be sharing the road with! They teach you technique and systems that you use to build good driving habits through practice, and the more you apply yourself the quicker you learn. The office is located in Elmhurst, on congested Broadway not far from Queens Boulevard. And you jump right into it! This is intimidating only at first, you build confidence quickly and come to realize even the busiest roads are perfectly manageable when you follow directions and take your time. Then you're taken out to lovely little out of the way pockets of quiet residential and industrial streets full of stops signs and turns to practice without the pressure. It's a very well rounded technique. Eric, the person who I had first contact with offers impeccable customer service, going above and beyond to make sure he communicates with you very quickly. I will say, try to schedule directly with him when booking your lessons. If someone else at the office is handling your scheduling, make sure you tell them you want to stick with one driver for the duration of your lessons. I felt this matters because each instructor has their own vehicle, and that's the vehicle you will be using on your test, any familiarity helps. You can always switch instructors if you feel you're not a good match with someone (they're very cool about that), but decide early on and then stick with it so you know how to handle their car. This ''school'' is a mess and I have no idea how it is so highly rated. The first instructor I had spent the lessons constantly talking about how great he was and which passing women he was attracted to rather than focusing on the lessons. I started to learn faster when I asked to switch instructors, but the second guy's car was a real piece of junk and just when I was finally getting used to that mess, they randomly switched me to a third instructor with a completely different car that I needed to get used to with just one lesson before my road test. Most of my lessons with the second and third instructor were dedicated to unlearning the completely incorrect instructions I got from the first one. I got the most expensive package because I had no experience and no real access to a car to practice in, but even after nine or so lessons, I still managed to fail my test twice. That's on the occasions where I showed up and was actually allowed to take my test. The driving school canceled my test once and double booked me with another student on a second occasion (causing me to waste a trip and a half a day getting out to a place for no reason). If you're a driver without any experience behind the wheel, then I strongly recommend going somewhere where you can definitely take the test in the same kind of car you actually learned to drive in. read more

Thanks to Gold Success, I went from a first-time driver to getting my NYS license in just 2 months time. Carlton Treston, my instructor, guided me every turn of the wheel, paving through my anxiety with his patient, digestible instructions. By the 4th lesson, I was confident and comfortable enough to chat away as I drove all through Queens. Carlton and I have continued to stay in touch since. A quick shoutout to Johnathan Yee, my one-time instructor for my 5th (impromptu) lesson on the day of my 1st exam. Also a super chill guy that genuinely desires to see me succeed. I've also gotten his contact & social media and am staying in touch with him. For logistics, i.e. scheduling, Gold Success can be hard to get in touch with sometimes, assumedly because they're busy, so patience and persistence is necessary. Hello, I would like to thank Frank and Susan for helping me get my license within a week of enrollment! I took an hour and a half class with Frank and passed the test today at Kissena Park. I drove on and off for years but I needed a lot of refreshers especially with parking. Frank was able to teach me parallel parking and broken U-turn within an hour! He was like a Jeidi master. He truly taught me how to drive within 6 days. I just took the test today at 1:30pm and I passed. The school not only got me my driver's license. From the get go I've been highly unimpressed by this school. The packages are fairly priced and Eric and Judy have tried to be clear and communicative about scheduling my 5 hour class to my road test and the lessons. However, from the beginning, the way they schedule lessons with your road test was never made transparent, and I was never given an actual timeframe for when things could get scheduled until I kept bothering them for one for a whole month. I was also disappointed by the attitude my instructor had during my lessons. I had Charles, who from the beginning I felt was not highly receptive to my questions about the road test. I have some experience, however he would get easily frustrated during lessons and whenever I had questions, he would get annoyed about them. I had signed up for the 6 lesson (3 90 minute sessions) package and was willing to schedule more if needed, however Charles seemed to not care if I failed or not, saying if I failed, I would just take it again, instead of offering advice for how to succeed. I was able to buy an additional session, and even then, Charles did not give me the reassurance or confidence that any instructor should give their student prior to their road test. I would have preferred another instructor who was more willing to be real with you, instead of waste your time. This has shown me that this driving school, like others I've encountered don't care how many times you take the road test as long as it keeps the business running. I would say avoid Charles and book lessons with Frank or Al, but honestly, find another school who will show you they care about your success from the BEGINNING. read more

First off, I have been driving for many years in a different country & i know the basics of driving so I was looking for just a few lessons to get me ready for my road test. My intention of only getting a 'few' turned to spending so much $$ on other driving schools where I had instructors that cannot even communicate in english. I spoke with Eric on the phone who asked about my experience and gave me his advise on how many classes I should take. He sounded so knowledgable and helpful and above all speaks perfect english that on that same day I enrolled and paid for 2 classes + car for the road test. Dumb me assumed whoever I spoke to (Eric) was the instructor assigned to me so you can just imagine my horror when I got an email about my driving lesson with a different instructor. Realizing it was my mistake for assuming, I just showed up and hoped for the best. My first lesson was with Charles. Learning with Charles felt like a mock road test, which I liked. He would say stuffs like 'park there' 'you hit the curb now thats 15 points'. He would always tell me to ask him questions, etc My next lesson was with Carlton. Learning with Carlton on the other hand was almost like having a friend teach you to drive. Carlton also took me to my road test and while in line we were talking about current events that immensely helped with how nervous I was. Now on the receptionist. There were 2 ladies that were literally hyping me up on my road test. It was snowing and miserable out and I asked if I could reschedule because of the weather and they said no and that the weather will be okay. Took some driving lessons here just to brush up on my skills. Instructor (Kevin) was always on time and was pretty nice. I'd recommend him if you need to pass your driving test as he makes sure you use the correct gestures and position your body the right way. He also makes sure you stay in your lane and turn at the appropriate time. Some of the things he makes you do may seem super exaggerated, but these are all things they look for on the driving test. They prefer to speak Chinese, but can also speak English, albeit a bit limited. In any case, my instructor also had English recordings that he played just to make sure I understood what he meant. For example, he had a recording on U-turns, stopping at stop signs, turning, etc. One thing for improvement is that the instructors should be allowed to use the bathroom in between/before/after lessons. My instructor used the bathroom during my lesson time more than once, and those minutes aren't made up at the end because he is scheduled to meet with his next student right away. Could probably demand that this time be made up, but I let it slide since I learned what I needed to. read more

Read on for what worked for me.. BACKGROUND I have some experience driving, but I'm extremely rusty and was a novice to begin with. I decided to go with Gold Success after looking at its pricing (affordable) and reviews. I took the 8-lesson (effectively 4-class) package. INSTRUCTOR My instructor was Hector. He's calm, always punctual, very observant and gives prompt constructive feedback, and knows the road test inside and out. Even after the very first class I felt I knew a lot better of what's expected in the road test. SCHEDULING + TIP I scheduled all my sessions with Alana, who's always pleasant. However, scheduling is hard! I wanted to keep seeing Hector for continuity, and I initially preferred weekends so I don't have to take time off work. This quickly proved untenable and the next session available after my first one was something like 3 weeks after - too much of a gap for me since the classes were my only means of practice. Alana advised me to pick a date for the road test and then schedule a few sessions leading up to it, rather than taking the first available slot for scheduling. I thought this made sense and it did work for me - my last 3 classes were (1) a week before the road test, (2) the day before the road test, and (3) the morning of the road test. read more

Eric is the owner and he provides great customer service. He will call back promptly and will schedule you as needed. However it's not the same for the rest of his staff. On several occasions I encountered miscommunications or down right rude staff. I did a lot of research with driving schools and I chose this one based off the great reviews. Unfortunately my experience wasn't the same. I am a 1st time driver. I unfortunately couldn't afford to do 10 classes (which is really 5 - 90 minute classes). To break it down, if you buy 6 classes you're getting 3 - 90 minute classes. This place puts 2 - 45 minute classes together. You are paying a bit less than a lot of places but if you pay for 6 classes and only get 3...well you make the inference there. In the end, I tool 7 classes which is really 4. I paid for 1 extra. I originally came in for more than 10 classes but unfortunately rent time came and I couldn't afford it so I tried to get what I can. Eric's staff was pretty rude about it, almost trying to force me into the package they want. I called Eric back and he rectified the situation. Then there was Charles. He has some great reviews here and I thought he would be great. He was really rude half the time and talked super fast I couldn't understand him. I took 6 classes which again meant I really took 3 - 90 minute classes with Charles. I would ask him to repeat himself and he would get frustrated. Did he give me some good advice, yes. The 1 to the right - 2 to the left and 1 to the right turns of the wheel for parallel parking is great advice. But it didn't help that I could barely understand him sometimes and he always had an attitude. I get it. They're driving instructors and I'm not expecting positivity to beam out of their butts. I am just like damn have a nice vibe in the car at least where it isn't awkward. On the day of the road test it was me and another girl who had taken 10 classes (really 5). We both failed our test and Charles could give no fs about it. When we finished the class we compared notes and the results were not that great. I would give it 1 star but I'll give 2 because I appreciated my instructor who was Al. Al was the best part about this place. The car I used to learn was quite dated and made it difficult to learn the ropes. What really killed it for me was that Eric would not allow me to upgrade my package after I failed my first road test attempt. Nonetheless the prices are too expensive anyways. $70 for one 90 minute lesson. I ended up going to a different school and passed my road test on the second try. Response to the owner: This policy you mentioned was conveniently left out during my onboarding process only to be reintroduced when I inquired about an upgrade. 5 stars for Hector. He was a great teacher and helped me pass the test on first try. In general if you get Hector you will not have a problem. He's patient, explains well, gives good feedback, etc. And if you can get him you should use this school. However, 1 star for Michael C, and I feel the need to give the school a low rating so they address this and fire him. He was TERRIBLE and has no business teaching how to drive and actually made me a worse driver in the one lesson I had with him. Problems: - His English was non-existent, and I wasn't warned of this beforehand. He couldn't properly explain simple concepts. I speak a little Chinese but even with the mix of Chinese and English I could not communicate with him. I understand much of the clientele is Chinese speaking but if you're scheduling lessons you should make the language barriers clear before scheduling them - I think the school assumed I could speak Chinese well just because I have a Chinese last name, which is irresponsible. I spent half the lesson trying to communicate simple things with him unsuccessfully - He taught objectively incorrect things. For example, he would get frustrated with me when I tried to come to a full stop at a stop sign. He would rush me through even though it meant I was doing a rolling stop - He told me that the parallel parking Hector taught me was completely incorrect, forbade me from practicing it even though it was the day before my road test, and proceeded to teach me a method that required me to adjust my right mirror in such a way that you can't actually use it for driving. And actually refused to let me touch the mirror when I got in the car. Hector later told me that had I driven like that in the test, the testers wouldn't even let me start driving since the car would not be road ready, and in general would not let me adjust my mirrors for parallel parking. I primarily needed to practice parallel parking so this was a complete waste of time. - At times he yanked the wheel from me with his hands and steered the car himself, which is incredibly unsafe - He would get angry and frustrated at me for little mistakes (ie doing turns that were slightly too wide) and kept saying that I had no business taking the test next day and that I would fail. His frustration himself was making me frustrated and nervous and causing the mistakes. I passed the test the next day with no points on turning so clearly he was wrong here. I don't think he realizes that getting frustrated at new drivers doesn't help them learn Literally a complete waste of 1.5 hours, a lesson, and my money. I got made a worse driver, wasn't allowed to practice what I needed to for the test I had the next day which I learned from other instructors, got taught incorrect habits like doing a rolling stop, got told I shouldn't drive with a working right mirror, was made more nervous for the test, and was taught a parallel parking technique that wasn't acceptable to use on the test. Avoid avoid avoid Michael C and the school must either fire or retrain this man if they want to maintain any semblance of quality . I feel bad writing this because Michael C is an elder who needs a job but it's socially irresponsible to have him training new drivers. This review is exclusively with respect to Chris, who was my instructor. I passed my driving test at the first asking today having started lessons with zero driving experience (zero as in not even having spent a moment behind the wheel of a car of a friend or relative in the past). Chris taught me from the ground up, helped me to stay relaxed, and was patient when I repeated the same mistakes (sometimes dozens of times). He was very calm, chill and friendly. When I started with Chris I had taken one lesson with a different instructor, which had left me feeling very negatively about my chances of passing and my potential as a driver. By the end of the first lesson with Chris (and from that point onwards) I was driving around Queens, feeling much more positive. I was in search for the best driving school and now I can gladly say I have found it. I chose the 10 class package since I had no previous experience. Frank was my instructor for all 10 classes and I can say he is the best! He will go over in detail what needs to be perfected in order to pass road test. I passed my road test the first time! I passed during my first try with Gold Success! I took the road test 10 years ago and failed, but I never had the desire to try again until recently. I had Al as my instructor. He was very knowledgeable and told me many things about driving I've never really been taught in the past by any other instructor. He was nice and gave me great pointers. He always made sure to answer all my questions, and asked me at the end of every lesson if I had any questions. When my road test was scheduled I was made aware right away by Eric, the business owner, that Al wouldn't be able to accompany me to the road test. This wasn't much of a problem especially since Al told me who the instructor is who would be coming with me and told me what to expect from him. The other instructor, Kevin, didn't speak too much English but he was able to give me pointers and let me know when I was doing something wrong. Needless to say, I was please with my experience.
