I passed! I took 10 lessons as a complete newbie and a 5-Hour lesson here at Sun Rays Driving School. I had been panicking since I started my lessons 1.5 months before my permit expires! Fortunately Dana, Jason and Ray was very skilled in helping new drivers pass the road test. Dana managed to schedule me lessons 2-3 times a week and accommodated for whatever plans I had. Jason and Ray are excellent instructors, and were very keen in pointing out and fixing bad driving habits. Really recommend if you are looking for a good driving school in the area. The registration and scheduling are really easy to follow. Most of them can be done through text or phone calls, plus they will send reminders the day prior to confirm with you. They are very flexible with scheduling/rescheduling and they do work around your schedule. Also, they will schedule your road test as well whenever you are ready. Payment can be done through Zelle which is a plus. Classes were easy to follow and they can pick you up and drop you off if you are around the area. Having lived in the city for 10 years but with an impending move to SoCal for work, I needed to learn how to drive, STAT, during the pandemic. I found this driving school through Yelp and asked for Ray as my instructor. I took 15 lessons (most with him, 2 with other instructors) over the course of ~3 months and passed the road test at Coney Island on my first try. Ray was calm and patient, and gave clear instructions. The car I drove was always clean and well maintained. Lessons were easy to schedule with Dana through text, with the limitation that I could only schedule one lesson with Ray per week due to how in demand he is. Weekend lessons were available, and were not too difficult to schedule. I will say that the lessons I had with the 2 instructors other than Ray, whose names I can't recall, were not nearly as helpful and I quickly went back to only requesting lessons with Ray. Another potential drawback was that the lessons I received were heavily geared towards passing the road test, and left something to be desired in the way of practical driving experience on busier, multi-lane roads. I'd give this place more stars if I could! I got my permit the beginning of December, since reservations took long in DMV due to covid; and once I passed I came upon this driving school. From the start of the process, everything was so smooth from calling to inquire & scheduling appointments. They are very friendly, patient & flexible with your schedule! Johnny who was my instructor, is very patient & teaches a lot of tips! I would get picked up at my location (I live about 20 minutes away from office) and would get dropped off either half way or at my location again depending on how far the next student is which I think is very fair. Also to mention, he is always on time to pick you up, and if anything came up he would always give a call to let you know! I took 16 lessons, which I don't think I really needed since I am already comfortable behind the wheel (surprisingly even though I never drove before driving school), but I got a package and it was all worth it. They combine two lessons into one day, meaning you would be getting an hour and half per day for lessons which I loved. Gave me more time to practice and get even more comfortable. Passed my road test on first try!! Definetly recommend to any new driver who is nervous to drive and never drove before. Within a month of driving classes, and a few lessons, I got my license! I didn't think I'd be able to drive nvm get my license but I did it and in record time thanks to Mike and Dana. Dana is efficient, easy to communicate with, and reliable. Mike is a really patient and calm instructor, gives good feedback and pointers and worked with me on my weak points. When taking lessons with him, I never felt nervous, afraid nor rushed which helped quicken my learning process significantly. Mike never raised his voice nor got impatient with me even when I made stupid mistakes or go blank on what I should already know. When I make a mistake I don't know how to fix, Mike turns it into a lesson in a lesson so I'd know what to do about it in the future. I really can't thank the staff of Sun Ray enough. read more

Ray is a great instructor and I cannot recommend him enough. He is extremely patient and he is meticulous in pointing out your bad habits. I passed on the second try with him and he was very adamant about me not giving up after failing the first time. If you want an instructor who will be confident in your abilities, I recommend him. Dana is in charge of scheduling and she always makes sure to schedule around your availability. Although I've had a few mishaps with her (forgetting to tell an instructor about a lesson), I have to give her credit for accommodating everyone's schedules. I didn't get the chance to meet Ray but got another instructor. The experience was terrible. Firstly he didn't teach me any details, just asked me to continue to drive -- why did I pay the money for someone to just watch me without teaching? Secondly he was so rude, laughed about my driving, kept saying that other students drive better than me, and asked a lot of personal questions, which makes me feel odd. I passed my road test last week. I had Ray as my main instructor and Johnny during weekdays after work, they both were very patient and helpful to me, they gave a lot of useful tips and directions on making turns, k-turn, parallel parking and driving in general. I highly recommend both of them. Also they have the same Toyota Corolla for the driving lesson which makes the experience consistent and keep in mind that it will be the same car for the road test. Ray is the BEST driving instructor! If you can, ask for Ray. A friend recommended me and I'm glad I requested him as my instructor. I literally HATE driving, but he made my whole experience a bit more enjoyable. I signed up for the package that includes 16 classes (but it's really 8 sessions because you'll be taking 2 classes each time), the 5 hour video, and 2 road tests. You can keep adding on if needed. I was comparing Brooklyn prices to queens prices and this place is much more affordable! My mom lives in Brooklyn so I would just stay over on days when I'm driving. Dana is thorough with scheduling classes and road test. Very communicative and accomendable with the pick-up and drop off spots if it's near the driving school. Good price! This was my first and last driving school-- passed on my first try!! I had 2 instructors here at Sun Rays. For half my lessons, I had Ray. He's very lax and easy going. He will not yell at you and like every other review, he talks to you and eases you into everything. The classes are paced according to your progress. I started by learning k-turns in a quiet area which eased me into stop signs, right and left turns. Ray will joke around and loves to talk. He speaks English, Cantonese and mandarin. I highly recommend Ray of the two. I had a great time driving with him! The second instructor I had was Leo. Leo is more stern and will point out your mistakes. He will tell you what you did wrong and how to fix it. Leo will also bring up what to do during real life situations compared to the road test. If you want an instructor that will point out your mistakes, take Leo. If you ask him, he will even guide you about what will happen during the road test. (E.g., specifics like what kind of road it will be-- yellow dashed or no yellow line, whether there will be a mass amount of lights or stop signs, etc) Ray is always booked so it will be hard to get lessons with him for more than one lesson a week especially when school is out. A friend recommended this driving school after I failed the first time and took lessons at another school in Manhattan, which was more convenient to home & work. It was well worth the commute! I took 3 lessons with Ray, and within one lesson I was able to correct a lot of the problem areas I had from the test. Ray also brought me to a similar area to the road test on my second lesson, which was super helpful as I was used to driving in Manhattan with narrow lanes. On the day of, I had my last lesson. He reassured me that driving really isn't that hard and I should not be scared at all. Mike was always so calm, even if I did something wrong he would calmly tell me afterwards. I signed up for 16 lessons, and we covered 2 lessons per session which basically means I met with my instructor 8 times. Each session lasted an hour and a half. Helen helped me with scheduling and made everything pretty straight-forward. She would follow up with me after my lessons to schedule future ones. I was able to work with the same instructor every time. My instructor, John, was incredibly helpful and patient with me. I had a lot of questions and concerns, and he addressed them all. John gave me a lot of tips and explained to me the things I needed to work on to pass the road test. I made similar mistakes each lesson but he was patient with me all the way through. It is pretty expensive. I paid $420 for 10 lessons, one road test and the video certificate. Usually, with other places, it's 3 road tests and 10 lessons for a cheaper price. They also make you sit and watch the video. The only reason why I gave them a 3 stars is because of my instructor Jason, he deserves 5 stars. After failed 4 times on my road tests with a different driving school, I switched to Sunray. I read a lot of reviews about instructors and decided to have Ray teaching me. I took about 12 lessons with Ray and passed on my 6th road test. On my first lesson, he asked me about past driving history, and made sure I understand basics about driving. Such as break light, emergency lights, etc. I asked tons of questions and he is very patient and explained everything. I remember when I failed the road test for the 5th time and looking to give up, He encouraged me and persuaded me to keep trying. I had 5 different instructors before I was studying with SunRay, and Ray is really good. I gained a lot confidence about driving after studying with Ray. Some people learns really fast and pass on the first road test. I am totally the opposite, I learn very slow and was bad with rules of the road. Sometimes I need to picture in my head to really understand. Ray kind of know where I was coming from so I really appreciated that he was very patient and supportive. He would always call you 15 Min earlier than your scheduled lessons. Make sure you always ready 15 min before your lessons.
