The 5 hour class were convenient. It took me one week from 5 hour class, to lessons and then passing the road test. Ask for Ikanke. He was so patient with me. I am VERY disappointed in how I was handled by this business!!!! My son home from school for the summer before his final semester in school. So I purchased a 9 lesson pkge and my son proceeds to take his lessons. Before I even paid my money I spoke with the school and explained to them how imperative it was that he take his road test BEFORE he went back on early August. Of course when August rolls around, he saved 2 lessons to take JUST before his road test something HAD to happen. I called the school to find out the test date and was told that the DMV website was down and they couldn't schedule any tests. With speaking to a lady who identified herself as the office manager we came to an agreement that they would throw in a few lessons with the 2 he had left and he would just do that in Dec after he completed his final college semester. Lo and behold I called the school yesterday just to make sure that the deal still stood and tell them to NOT schedule him for a road test until December. The woman I talked to this time was the actual manager and she said to me, " the delay is on the dmv, not us" to which I replied it's not our fault either. In the end she agreed to one extra lesson, to which I am NOT satisfied because they dropped the ball. Had they scheduled him for the test when he FIRST started his lessons, which, by the way, I asked them to, they would've bypassed the computer glitch in his case. I had four more people I was sending there, at this point I will tell them don't bother, the school does not keep their word. In closing, do I think he can pass with the three lessons? Okay so I guess I called on a bad day last week. I decided to just go in on Saturday for the 5hr course instead of on Sunday, when I went in I was attended to quickly. I showed them my groupon and then went into the room,The girls were all pretty young but they were all extremely nice. I took the 5hr course which was more of a lecture. We did have a break thankfully because I definitely was falling asleep. After our break the instructor taught us about buying cars, insurance policies, the different types of licenses you can have. We discussed accidents and whats protected by different insurance companies, leasing, and even bank loans. To me this part of the lecture was great, there were certain things that I did not know, and his advice was also extremely helpful. As I am learning how to drive pretty late and I am trying to learn extremely fast. So all of this information was great. If you are looking for a 5hr course where they show a video this is not it. If you are new to driving in general then this is where you should come. He teaches you a lot about the rules of the road test and gives many examples. I did not take any lessons here but I did here good things about the instructors. I am considering paying for the rush road test appointment so I will definitely update my review then! read more

I registered for driving lessons towards the end of April and recently (July) passed my road test on the first try. I had a little bit of driving experience coming in so I purchased the 5hr class and 5 driving lessons. The woman (I apologize for forgetting her name) who conducted the 5hr class was very informative and had a positive attitude. She was very upbeat and patient. I had 4 of my driving lessons with Antoine. He is definitely a top tier instructor. He is extremely patient and calm mannered. Antoine is also really good at explaining things in multiple ways. If he sees you're struggling to grasp a concept, he will try explaining it differently without any hints of frustration. One of the things that stood out about him was that he's good at instilling confidence in you as a driver. Antoine always highlights what you're doing well and provides constructive criticism in the areas that need to be improved. He spends a lot of time making sure you're well prepared to pass the road test. He's also extremely professional. He will communicate ahead of time if he's running a few minutes late and will let you know when he's 10 minutes away from your pick up location. I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a driving instructor. I reserved my final lesson for the day of the road test. Jared was my instructor. He was also pretty calm mannered and made sure I was prepared to pass the road toast. And I did! My road test was scheduled over a month from my 4th lesson which was a bit annoying. I know this may not have been any fault of BSA but just something to keep in mind if you plan on registering for lessons during the busier periods of the year. A little constructive criticism. One of the things that really needs to be improved is the cleanliness of the vehicles. Every single vehicle that I road in was extremely dirty. Yes, disinfectant was sprayed on the surfaces prior to entering the vehicle but that didn't make me feel any more comfortable sitting in a car full of stains, crumbs, garbage, and dried liquid from spilt drinks. Like it literally looked like the cars hadn't been properly cleaned in months. If my instructor wasn't so good I probably would've considered going elsewhere. I would like to politely suggest better upkeep of the cars as I think it would help improve the customer experience. I didn't experience any rudeness from the staff. Do NOT pay full price to come here. I'll give two stars because I only had to pay $17 for the 5hr class on Amazon local and because it's actually more like 4 hours. When I arrived they didn't even know Amazon local had a deal. The woman in the office was very very rude. In the class Ms Johnson literally only discussed K-turns, 2-way roads that don't always have lines, different types of licenses available, and alcohol. Two videos on teen driving (no teens were in our class!), one alcohol true/false quiz, one quiz on road signs. I've taken the 5hr class before (it expired) and there's a lot of other information that is supposed to be taught. Most of the time was spent with her out of the room trying to finish writing our certificates. The customer service is terrible and they're extremely unorganized. The only redeeming quality of that place was Serena. Serena, she deserves 5 stars! She was patient, really cared about how you were doing and really took her time to show you how to drive correctly! I drove on and off for years and Serena erased all my bad driving habits and turned me into a driver. She really is attentive and pays attention to everything you do. I passed my road test on the first go! The only person I can thank for that is Serena. Now, the company itself, is extremely horrendous. They basically made me max out my lessons to the point that I had to pay for another lesson on the day of the road test. They scheduled me for a road test a month into my lessons, and they didn't communicate that to me until I called to schedule a road test. I had to cancel the first one and had to keep calling so I can talk to the person who does the scheduling. They barely pick up the phone and I had to call several times until someone picked up. This company has very poor communication skills As well as poor customer customer service As well booking people without their knowledge for road test and failing to communicate that I was booked for one. It was like pulling teeth to get a date. I waited over a year for them to reschedule me for a test they never called. I had to. I took my 5 hour class and lessons paid for the packag. Not one person I communicated with explained to me that my 5 hour class certificate expired in a year and I did not see it on the paper. I decided to call a couple of months ago to see if they can schedule me they said I had to wait. Never asked about wether the certificate was expired or the date and I know they can see them in the system. I traveled all the way there to get there for them to tell me I can't take it because my 5 hour class expired. Fine now what ? I can't take my test that I am scheduled for and been waiting over a year for to do without the certificate and now you want me to pay all over again. And then I gotta wait again because you have no idea when I can test again. A waste of my time and money all the while telling me I rescheduled 3 times which is false. And proceeds to argue with me about it. I would not recommend this school. Even for the driving lessons the instructor wasn't paying attention he was his phone while he was supposed to be instructing me I let that go and didn't complain. But I am very disappointed in how unorganized they are as well. DO NOT GO HERE. Today is the day of my road test and it's been the most chaotic experience. The school asked me to arrive at 7am, I did. Prior to my arrival, I called a few times to confirm that I could take a lesson. When I got there, no organization whatsoever. They didn't schedule a class for me (I literally called 5 times before today to make sure). Finally they decide for my lesson, I would drive the other people and my new driving instructor to the test site. I have a new instructor almost every lesson because most have been so late to the point where I would have to cancel my class. My driving lesson was only 20 minutes and I paid for 45 minutes. I came this morning calm and ready to do this, after coming to this driving school today, I'm filled with anxiety. The driving instructor has never been to a test site, he didn't even have the test paper they grade on. The reason I wanted to have a practice before my test is because I wanted to make sure I did everything correctly based on the testing sheet. Honestly, this hasn't been a pleasant experience for me with this driving school. Very disorganized and chaotic. 10/10 would not recommend. I have to question these five star reviews. When my son scheduled his driving lesson, he was told he would have to come there because it was to far. When I drove him there and his appointment time had begun and neither he or the instructor came out, I went in to find out what was going on. The two women were shouting back and forth to each other about contact information and the place was packed with Groupon clients there for a 5 hour class or something. When I questioned the pick up policy, no one could explain why he was told a 7 minute drive was to far away for pick up. I asked where his instructor was and there she was on sitting right in front of my playing on her phone. My son had nothing good to say about the instructor who apparently has a thing about tapping to reiterate when you've done something wrong and didn't really provide anything useful feedback. Utica is a busy street and I was impressed to see he parked well, until I noticed the front tires were turned toward the street and pointed that out to him. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone, bad day or not. I took about 6 of 10 lessons with her and even after 6 lessons I was not confident nor was I turning good . Then I took Mr.lloyd he was a much better instructor. Here's what I didn't like about the school . My first instructor picked me up at my house and dropped me off at home . Then my second instructor said that my house address was too far and he couldn't pick me up at my house so I had to go to the school . Next my road test ! They said I was supposed to have my test in April which never happened . I put my name in the book twice and I didn't get a road test till May. I failed my road test many years ago and I gave up on driving for awhile. But since I live in the area, I decided to try one more time for my license. I started taking lessons with Serena but she was always booked up, so I took lessons with Tremayne. I'm so glad I did! He made me feel really confident and comfortable on the road. Today was my first driving lesson and I had Antonio . HE IS AMAZING ! , I really can't say anything more . The car was clean and smelled great , he was on time , and he was phenomenal. Extremely reassuring , calm and informative . I was anxious starting out but by the time we spoke and I got started I felt so confident . I was a little nervous and on edge at first because of a prior experience with another driving school where the instructors were verbally abusive and aggressive but this experience was the total opposite and it is exactly what I was looking for . My experience at Blue Steel Auto has been horrible. Angie who is the office manager is loud unprofessional rude and doesn't take responsibility for anything. She has reschedule me multiple times for my driving test, and her excuses has been it's DMV fault. She has made appointments for me and has canceled them at the last minute. Angie also has taken upon her self to change my driver instructors several times without any good cause. I have been working with Jarret since August. Jarrett is a wonderful driver he is well groom and his car is well kept. Beware of Anthony he's a instructor also, he is loud and he touches and spits while talking. He was sent instead of Jarrett and His car was dirty and so is he. This man had me driving on the Jackie Robinson. (Hello I'm a new driver) he also was talking on his cellphone while I was driving. Driver instructor Sam came to my house 30 minutes late and when he finally came he was annoyed, and according to him they provided him with my wrong address and phone number. I was supposed to have a 2 hour lesson it was only 1 hour. I was told to call the office to reschedule. This fool was screaming out the car at his friend's and family during my lesson. This place hires all clown's. After my lesson I called to reschedule my lesson, but of course the driver whom I been driving with since August is unavailable. Crystal J is the Director and I have left several messages with Angie, meisha and with the young lady I spoke with today chantel asking her to call me. I been trying to reach her since August. Crystal J hasn't returned any of my calls. I asked for her email I was told she doesn't have one. Buyer Beware!!! This place is terrible!!! Since there is no reciprocal policy when it comes to my foreign driver's license, I had to start from scratch to get a New York one. And so, I drag my lazy behind to start the process of upgrading my learner's permit to the actual driver's license. I needed the 5 hours pre-licensing course and there was an online deal so I came to Blue Steel. Blue Steel Driving and Security School is located on the second level of the building. My understanding is that the interior of these older commercial buildings in this area are usually quite outdated thus I didn't really expected much of the place. However, it is worth noting that the facility was very clean. The office staff was quite neutral and lacked in courtesy which made me feel better that I didn't pay full price for this. Now, onto the 5 hour course: I was going to give this place a 3 stars because it was ok but certain issues nagged me enough to downgrade it to a 2 stars plus making me not recommend it to anyone. The instructor talks too much, too much filler and the stories, anecdotes related or not to the topics are in too much detail and he took his sweet time to narrate them. Surely, this is a 5 hour course, we have all the time but I rather the content to be better. He took time to play the game of putting everyone down since we are all children who think we know it all and just want to get our hands on the wheel and speed away. His objective was to show we didn't know much (which is totally possible, even for 7+ year driver like me), and that the attendees shouldn't see the course as an annoyance but as a real help to keep everyone safe on the roads. But sadly, his deliveries ultimately cross the line to CONDESCENDING on several occasions. Most of the times, his dry jokes on some of the young girls' abilities wiped the smile off their faces. He asked me if I knew what "fog" is. (Because he learned that I was not from around here) I replied him that yes I know what fog is and that I know some English too. At the end of the class, he was casually pushing for the driving lesson the place provides. Not that I really mind it, but it was the way he did it.... by making you feel insecure about your ability to ace the road test. Other than his attitude and his fondness to hear himself talk (and you better get along with his program otherwise, he'll put you down and leave you no room to defend yourself), when he was on the right subject, he was a good teacher. I appreciate the reminders and the tips that I'm sure a lot of drivers out there don't even remember. If you are slightly more "grown up" like me with an aversion to seeing others being picked on and too young to defend themselves, then I would suggest you go take this course somewhere else. read more

This school is a waste total of time. I don't know how G.L's review dated Dec 23, 2012 can be a 5 star experience. I took 5 lessons with Avis. He was a patient instructor. I took 2 lessons with Mrs. Johnson which was an absolute nightmare, a text book example of how a driver should not be: a raging, cursing lunatic. At the end of those lessons, the school informed me that I was scheduled for a test on Dec 3. I took a half day off work. On arrival at the Starrett City (zip code 11239) DMV location, Mrs. Johnson finds out that I am not registered. The school offers a make up test schedule at the Red hook location. Now on Monday, Jan 14, I take a half day off. This time round, Mrs. Johnson has a morning yelling session on where to meet me at an intersection, which she incorrectly communicated to me over the phone. Then, she realizes that the paperwork for another test-candidate was left at their (Blue-Steel's) offices. We head back (the delay has nothing to do with my scheduled test, for which I am now late for). The office is not open as the person who opens the office has not arrived. We arrive at the test area a full hour after our scheduled time. The test supervisor initially rejected all candidates from the school. Mrs. Johnson convinced him into making an exception. The school provided car also had problems starting. I had earlier been promised 15 mins drive prior to being tested in the car, as the car was a different model from what I had experience in. That, of course did not happen, as there was no time to do so after our delay. Mrs. Johnson (my given instructor) has serious issues and needs to be examined by a independent third party for her behavior and outrage. She curses at the prospective students, yells at other motorists while driving at junctions etc. When I stated to her that she is not setting a good example by breaking traffic rules, she replied "I can drive however I want, as long as I don't get pulled over by cops". A fine example to the rest of us. I will not waste my time with BlueSteel again, despite the fact that Avis is a great, patient instructor (which is a shame). This is the absolute WORST driving school ever and AJ AKA Mrs. Johnson is thee worst instructor ever. She kept yelling at me while I was driving, I would ask her for feedback and explain what I should be doing and what I'm doing wrong and she wouldn't tell me anything. She would constantly tell me I'm either not ready for the road test, I may fail or she would see what she could do w/ me and that I would probably need more lessons - such a great confidence building in an instructor. She tried to have me parallel park at the end of our lesson and got frustrated that I didn't know what she meant when she was giving her crappy directions and she told me to get out the car. She's very impatient and I had to sit and listen to how she's a school bus driver (scary thought already) and then she started talking to me about racist nonsense, and how people probably want me to move out of the neighborhood where I live. And how she doesn't like this race or that. Horrible instructor and service , you get what you pay for, that's why their prices are so cheap. Don't bother with the living social deal, I bought it but I never went back for a second lesson and Living social won't honor a refund which is fine by me. Don't waste your time or money they won't teach you anything. And I really question the good reviews people listed, wouldn't be surprised if they were fakes!!! read more
