Well, my local dive got a little remodel. New booths and reconfiguration of tables and chairs. Also an addition of Mexican menu items, while still keeping your familiar breakfast and lunch dishes. An older building with quite a few vehicles still in the parking lot at 9:30 am. I've had this place bookmarked for years and haven't been able to get to it until today. I had to fast for a late blood draw this morning so I was past my usual breakfast hunger pains and so I was able to drive the 17 mins. I ordered two eggs medium, hash browns, patty sausage with white toast and strawberry jelly. That's what I usually order for breakfast regardless of the restaurant. Everything tasted great except for the hash browns. To me they seemed cut thicker than usual therefore I think they should have been cooked longer. Or maybe its just me. I ate some of them but not all of them. Service was friendly. I was quickly greeted and told to choose my own table. Drink order was quickly taken and menus left with me. The check came fast too once the meal was over. But the kitchen seemed a tad slow for only five active tables. One was finishing, two of us waiting on food, another ordering, and the last one just sitting down. The food was hot though as expected. read more

The restaurant seems historic and is a popular joint. This is a place that I really wanted to like. They have a decent sized private parking lot and equally decent sized dining area. There is a TV in the place that are playing while you dine. I guess I was irritated because the guy in the booth behind me was watching a video on his phone while he was eating. It was kind of loud and annoying. If I wanted that, I could have stayed home with my 6 year old. Anyway, the menu is a huge book full of all types of food. I came here for breakfast so, I went with the Cheese Blintzes, a cream cheese filled crepe, with apples on top. I also got a side of diced potatoes and bacon. It took about 25 to 30 minutes to get my food, which is way too long. The potatoes were ok. They could have used more seasoning. The bacon was ok. You cant do too much with bacon. The crepes were ok. I ate them, but they did not leave an impression on me or anything. I guess ok was the theme for my meal because the service was ok. My server did her job. She could have checked on me a bit more and maybe brought me some water. Anyway, on a positive note, the orange juice was good. It tasted freshly squeezed, but it is a small glass. The restaurant also has reasonable prices and they have full or slices of pies that you can purchase. Well, as 3 stars denotes, this place was ok. I could take it or leave it. Did someone say diner? I love these places and you can't go wrong eating at Mother's. The name says it all. Home cooking. Came here with a small group for breakfast. Let's say we all left full. Great omelettes, pancakes, biscuits and gravy. Endless coffee was good. I don't think they a bad thing on the menu. This is definitely a good place to bring a small group of friends or co-workers. The food is very good and there was no lack of attention. The wait staff was frequently coming by to check if we needed coffee refills and to make sure everything was ok. You can definitely tell everything is homemade as well. I have been several times and will be back. Absolutely excellent customer service. They only had two servers to work the floor and they had the best attitudes I have probably ever experienced out of all the restaurants I've ever been to. This is definitely a place for regular customers. You really do feel at home and welcomed. Some of the best steak I've ever had medium rare. They do have Worcestershire sauce in the back if you ask for it. My steak egg and hash brown meal was plenty to fill me up especially since I'm supposed to be eating in smaller portions (doctor's orders). So the second half of my meal will definitely be my lunch for later today. She did let me know that they do à la carte for the steaks and any menu item. Call ahead by about 15 minutes to place your orders for takeout except on the weekends because they get really really busy and I can definitely see why. This is definitely a spot I'm bringing my honey too he loves good home cooking like this. That way we can both sit down and enjoy it and not have to worry about cleaning up at home. I came in here with a friend for breakfast after reading some reviews, we both ordered the apple pancake in Medium, I make something very similar at home and I have eaten something like it at another restaurant. We also ordered coffee. My son order a breakfast that had hash browns, biscuits and gravy, eggs and I think sausage. He can do his own review, I just know he said the hash browns were not done. Both of our Pancakes were overcooked in my opinion, the apple and cinnamon was very tasty and hot, but the pancake itself was dry and even over cooked cake like. So a dry cake if you will. It was still good, and maybe they had an off day. I know they said it would be 35 minutes to make which might explain it as I wouldn't think it should be baked for that long, but hey I am not a chef, just someone who cooks and bakes a lot. The coffee was well coffee, it wasn't the best I have ever had, but not everyone likes the same style coffee, even if my friend and my son agreed it wasn't the best. Will I be back, in one word yes. I want to give them another chance as I really wanted to enjoy the meal. I will try one of their omelets or something else next trip, but I will be back. When I do I promise to update this review. I would have gone 3.5 stars by the way. As I know how hard it can be to bake a pancake like this. read more

Neither waitress, cashier, or manager knew how to do calculate their own cash discount, would not give a refund or process with the card after the transaction started. This was the last food stop on my road trip and where the train derails because I didn't plan an exit breakfast like I did all my other great stops. This place was close to my hotel and on the way home just off the highway so I stopped. The place is dated looking but not a complete dive with tile/wood and that old carpet. The menu had a lot of choices but I wanted runny yokes so I could do an egg dish or a benny dish because I would get runny yokes, I opted for the Hoosier Benny which is a biscuit, sausage patties, poached egg topped with sausage gravy that comes with hash browns, breakfast comes with free coffee by the way. I placed my order and got my Coffey while I waited for my food, for the place being 90% empty my food was taking a while I thought and I didn't get a coffee warm up for 25 minuets when my food hit the table and that was the only warm up but I was done anyway. The plate looked really good so I started with the golden hash browns that were good with a nice ratio of crispy vs soft potatoes. When I forked a bite out of the Benny no yoke ran out, WTF they cooked them hard, who does that because that defeats poached eggs, why not just put a boiled egg on the Benny. The biscuit was fresh and good. The sausage patties were thicker than average patties but the bland appeal to the masses kind, too bad they weren't tastier. The sausage gravy was thick/creamy with minimal sausage and slightly better than average. At the end I was left standing at the register for a good 7 minuets while the staff walked past me so I'm still getting slow service, once again I skipped the breakfast that came with my room and it was probably better here so I'm still giving three stars. read more

Don't let the surroundings or dated decor fool you, this place is very good. We pass it a couple times a week but tried for the first time yesterday. There are always lots of cars outside and I was seeing good reviews on Yelp. I ordered the tuna cold plate ($7.20) which came with a bowl of soup. The food came at a reasonable time. The soup of the day was a chicken rice cabbage medley that I could tell was made from scratch. The soup was delicious. The cold plate had generous portions of tuna, cottage cheese, boiled egg, veggies and a nice melon/pineapple mix. The fruit was very fresh and delicious. There was so much food that couldn't finish. A great bargain. My husband had a cheese burger with fries ($7.50). The portions were again generous and the burger very tasty. The home fries were a little flavorless but we were grateful there was not much salt on them. They offer breakfast and lunch specials as well as Senior specials for dinner. Our server was friendly and helpful she kept our water glasses full. A must try if you are on the west side of town. read more

Friend order the Fish combo special which he sent back after the first bite... under cooked across the board and not fresh? - double whammy. I ordered scrambled eggs thinking I'd be safe - it was safe. Bacon was way over done --- but not sure on which day that happened on before it was served to me. Two bright notes, and there is always a bright note - is the staff, only one server this evening but she was a super star! She was so accommodating and friendly... she just wanted us happy. Secondly my friend who sent the fish back order a replacement dish the same as me... scrambled eggs, bacon and fries instead of hash browns... his was awesome!!! I wanted to order again to get his! The thing I hate about Yelp reviews is how a place like this can look like it has four stars. So you go, sit down, and during the 15 minute wait for anyone to acknowledge your presence, you start scrolling through the reviews, and your heart sinks a little bit with each one. And then, an hour and a half later when you finally have eaten the quote-unquote food, you find yourself agreeing with each one. So yeah: we walked in and a woman told us to just sit anywhere. I guess I should have asked her to specify which tables would get service. There are multiple Help Wanted signs on the building, so I understand if they're understaffed, but not every table was seated. We had to get up and get our own menus, and even then no one came by. When we finally did order, the food took an hour. I'm not kidding. I would never go to a diner expecting Michelin rated cuisine but I found the food pretty unappetizing. My stepfather's Eggs Benedict was overcooked, echoing other reviews on here, so steer clear of that. My main issue was obviously with the service. Don't go here unless you have hours to spend waiting for your food and then regretting the whole visit. Also, the "Oriental Food" section on the menu left a bad taste in my mouth that had nothing to do with the food. read more

The exterior of the building is run down and the interior is only slightly better, We quickly sat where we wanted and were given our menus. They have a lot of breakfast items and our waitress recommended either the pancakes or waffles for us as we were first time customers. I got the banana and strawberry topped pancakes with a side of hash browns. My wife got a plain waffle with syrup and whipped cream with a side of bacon. My pancakes were delicious but wished it had a bit more of the topping on it. My hash browns had too much oil and were a little dark. My wife's waffle was excellent and her bacon was perfect. Service was quick and friendly. If you don't mind the rundown feeling of the location, the main food is good and inexpensive. I knocked one star off for the hash brown side dish. read more

I think my coworkers were a little on edge while we dined. I ordered the oscar/crab frittata. It was oddly cheap for the massive amount of crab it contained. The restaurant is a basic breakfast/lunch place with the kind of cooking you can do at home with the convenience of eating out. Since it is billed as a breakfast place, I ordered my "go to" for breakfast: Eggs Benedict (Traditional Benny). Whenever I try a new breakfast place, I usually order this because it has a number of good tasting components, but requires some skill to execute (and is a royal pain to fix at home if you want real Hollandaise sauce!) So after grabbing a spot in a booth near the window, I placed my order and waited. Before very long, my plate arrived with the diced potatoes I selected as my side. Overall, the flavor of the Benny was good, but one of the eggs was a bit overcooked and the yolk, when broken, didn't flow. The other egg was a bit under cooked with some of the egg white not cooked through. The Canadian Bacon didn't cover the English muffin bottom so that some bites did not have any meat. The potatoes were unseasoned, but fortunately, each table had shakers for salt and pepper handy. The server, while friendly, disappeared from the floor for long periods. My water was not refilled and she never checked back to see if everything on the plate was okay. So, not exceptional service on my visit. If I wanted to have a sit down breakfast or lunch, I would consider coming again, but wouldn't think of this as a destination place for dining. Review #661 read more

Someone get the poor chef/owner some help! The most impressive part of this menu was the meaty Rye toast and the menu itself. Felt like a book aka Cheesecake Factory status. I can imagine this man is sweating so hard back there - never knowing if he has to cook Greek, French, American or some other nationality. Simplify and specialize that menu! Given the owners are Mexican I would like to see Chilaquiles or at least some New Mexican cuisine on that menu. I got the Greek skillet, but there was something foul about the potatoes, feta and spinach below the scrambled eggs. The crepes were meh. Can't mess up Nutella but these crepes weren't it for me. Pinhole ceilings & 1980's curiosity shop sitting booths. Looks fun down on the outside. I respect this is a long time family owned business with friendly servers. I will say the atmosphere is friendly as you can tell this a locales type restaurant. However I will say the Veggie Skillet was just ok. Most skillets I've had features the potatoes to be crispy. This was not the case here as it tasted more like they were boiled. That's not a great taste for a skillet. The sunny side up eggs on top were fine and the veggies were ok. I was hoping for more from Mom's. Although I did appreciate the assortment of hot sauces available including Tapatio. Wow! read more
