I have been wanting to try this place for a long time, and today was the day. We took the whole family, six of us and the kids loved it. My son ordered the country fried steak w/pancakes, two of our daughters ordered Oreo pancakes with cream, our other daughter ordered the avocado bacon omelette, my wife ordered the Monte Cristo, and I ordered the gyro plate. Morningside Cafe is one of those places I've driven by countless times, and for whatever reason never felt compelled to stop. One weekend morning not too long ago I was driving down Ogden avenue, and was quite hungry and decided to give this place a try. In stepping in I noticed it looked like many other breakfast places in the area. I was very quickly greeted and then seated and soon was handed a menu. After looking over my options and noticing many familiar breakfast dishes on the menu such as Hobo and Gypsy skillets which are commonly served in pancake houses throughout the area. I finally narrowed down my choice to a spicy chicken skillet. I placed my order and fairly shortly thereafter my food was at the table. The spicy chicken skillet had spicy chicken on it, mushrooms, pepper, onions and hollandaise sauce. While hollandaise and chicken might sound like a strange pairing it went together quite well. I had the skillet with scrambled eggs which were soft and fluffy. Overall I was very happy with my food. The service here was excellent, my server was attentive and friendly going so far as to give me a soda "to go" at the end of my meal. Overall I was very pleased with my breakfast at Morningside and would recommend visiting. I'll give them four stars, good food, good service at a fair price. read more

On the way out of town, I wanted to get some breakfast. I've driven by the Morningside Café many times, so I decided to stop there on this occasion. The menu isn't terribly complex, but does have a nice variety. On this morning, I decided to have their Eggs Florentine - Eggs Benedict with spinach, tomato and bacon. You get a lot of food for the money here. I had french toast with sides of 2 sausage links, 2 bacon strips, and 2 eggs all for $8.29 (optional fresh blueberries were an additional $1.40). Wife had a steak skillet plus a side of a couple of pancakes for $9.99. We each felt like we ordered two breakfasts. One tip is to avoid the juice - it was overpriced at $3.29 for a small glass of OJ that was of low quality and out of the box taste. The clientele looked to be exclusively local and loyal ole' timers. The place feels a little dated and low key, but it's clean and of good value if you stick with the right choices, which is what we learned. We'll be back again sometime for the value deal. read more

Was in the area looking for breakfast and saw that the Morningside Cafe had some really good reviews so I chose it over the always predictable Ihop and I am sure glad I did. I was seated immediately helped by my waitress, the menu is full of great options at a great price. I selected my order and I guarentee you not, it arrived in less than 5 minutes! If I could give this restaurant negative stars for customer service I would. Today, my family and I went in for breakfast and our server, MEGAN, was horrible. She did not treat us the way she was treating others. She kept walking by our table and when she asked us if we needed anything else she did it in a forced tone, like she did not feel comfortable serving us. When we told the owner, their excuse was that she was having a bad day and Megan said that we were lying and tried to blame us for her bad service. We are frequent customers here and we love the food and we have never had this poor treatment. Valerie, Rene, and Felicita are always nice to us and make us comfortable. Stopped in for brunch today after doing some wedding venue hunting. Cozy diner atmosphere with quick and great service; the four of us ordered our meals and it was out in 10-15 minutes--no joke. I ordered the western omelet and not only was it a big dish, it was fantastic. I couldn't finish my side of wheat toast so that was a bummer. Nonetheless I was satisfied with the decision of having brunch here. Our waitress was super friendly and always made rounds to be sure we had our beverages refilled. (Just OK) I pretty much agree with Steve W. and J B. Service was friendly and competent. Menu was large. Lots of specials including California Oatmeal for $7.95. The omelet and eggs we had were good. Neither of us cared for the hash browns. We think they came out of an Ore-Ida bag. The Canadian bacon was over-cooked and dry. Coffee was fair. I drink it black but there was a good selection of flavored creamers on the table. It wasn't busy when we left so check out at the front counter was not a problem. We don't eat breakfast out often so I can't comment on the pricing. Two (good sized) juices, two egg entrees and one coffee came to $28 before tip. Tip: If it's cold outside do not sit in a booth by the windows facing Ogden Ave. You will be sitting in an unpleasant cold draft. read more

I went in today to pick up 2 eggs combo and a morning side skillet. I got home and found that there were no bacon or sausage links included on the 2 eggs combo. I called the restaurant to inform them and I get that mistakes happen. They asked if I can drive again to get the items left out and I said no but I can take a credit towards future purchase. Lady on the phone says no, the owner would not do that, "only today"! I insisted on a future credit, lady just hangs up the phone on me. WOW! Won't be returning. Coffee tasted burnt. Ordered americano and it was awful as well. Ordered country fried steak with gravy on the side, it came to the table scraped off, server blamed the kitchen. Said she didn't want me to wait for another to be cooked correctly. Toast was burnt yet soft, basically burnt bread, not toast. The table next to us had their plates a jumbled mess, they had to switch meat to get what they ordered, and sent eggs back because one ordered scrabble not over easy. Bathroom needs updating, lots of old non sealed wood and smells terribly. The server would stop by and ask if we were okay so fast we didn't have a chance to give an answer let alone make sure contact. The hashbrowns were good and the host very nice. My husband and I are only together on the weekend due to work. We always drive by but never stopped in. We finally went a few weeks ago and have been coming every weekend we are available. We wanted to find a spot and this is it. Prices are decent and food is always great. I love the flavored coffee creamers, I know it's silly but it makes me enjoy me breakfast. Servers have always been great and efficient. I see the sign saying we are short staffed and to please be patient. It breaks my heart seeing that but we will continue to support your awesome cafe. Morningside Cafe is a casualty of the Yelp review system. I'll explain- I live in the Lisle area, and breakfast is without a doubt my jam. I was the kid who was always super excited when the school lunch menu read "Breakfast For Lunch!" and since then, coffee, eggs, and all the fixings have become appropriate (and preferred) foods for me to eat regardless of time of day. I actually didn't even bother trying Morningside for quite some time, as when I search my area for breakfast, their (current) three star rating puts them super far down the search results list. Truth be told, I didn't have much reason to investigate why they were rated low, as there was so much other stuff in the area to try. I hit breakfast place after breakfast place, not really amazed by any of them, until I finally decided to try the Morningside Cafe. This is without a doubt the absolute best breakfast diner in the area, and potentially even one of the best breakfast diners I've been to in my life. It's got everything from great food, incredible coffee, to those weird paintings on the wall you only ever see at Midwestern diners that are decorated like your Grandma's house in 1980. Going here every morning has turned into part of my daily routine, and in the process I've gotten to know everyone who works here and each and every one of them are just genuinely great people through and through. I wish I would've discovered this place year ago, but I didn't bother. Why? The result of the average review score from passive aggressive diners, people who left crappy reviews literally YEARS ago, and all the other drastically negative side effects that come from anonymously venting on the internet instead of just saying something to your waitress. *sigh* read more

This is by far my favorite diner in the area. It looks like nothing special from the outside, so I have for years passed it up thinking it was probably like a family-owned Dennys. Now that I have tried this place a couple of times, it will be my "go-to" for breakfast and lunch. First of all, I have to give a shout-out to the awesome waitress there. I am horrible for not getting her name the couple of times that I have been there, but honestly I might come here just to see her. She is super energetic and friendly and really makes dining there a great experience. She will tell you what is good, tells you when you should choose something else and just overall super attentive. The food is great. I have had a french dip sandwich, soups, patty melts - everything has been great. My favorite waitress told me once that the restaurant insists on using fresh oil to fry their fried items in each day. You can really tell in the taste of their food. They have amazing onion rings - some of the best I have ever had but even the fries are exceptional. I always end up eating my fries first and then bringing home 1/2 of my main entree because I am full. Overall, a great place for breakfast or lunch. I will be back again and again. read more

Very sweet and attentive and kept the iced tea refills coming! As a person born in the south I judge EVERYONE based on their iced tea - this place was very good and brewed, clear and fresh! This was not our first meal from Morningside, and it's usually been great. We ordered takeout from their website around mid-morning, selected items and our desired pickup time. At the designated time, I arrived. The staff had no idea that I had ordered something, and then found a printout next to the hostess station. I heard other staff saying " Yeah, that happens." Without an apology, the waitress re-entered my order into their billing system. Even though I had prepaid a gratuity, the credit card form had a space to enter "tip." I waited for them to make our order, and finally received it about 15 minutes later. When I got it, the server just said, "Here you go." This place surpassed my expectations today. Unfortunately, so did the prices! The good: 9:30 am SUNDAY morning and NO LINE to be seated (yet)! Friendly waitstaff. Prompt service. Chalula sauce on every table. Clean. The great: Good quality, fresh ingredients. My made-to-order omlette had fresh spinach and greek olives. (If anything, a little too much spinach...and this from a girl who loves her spinach!) Perfect hash browns. Healthy helpings. Good GLUTEN FREE pancakes! The disappointing: Small parking lot. When a line formed as we were eating, there was nowhere for the people to stand (other than in the middle of the restaurant) and the cold air was creeping in. Love me some Bfast! I have eaten here several times when I am in town to visit. The decor reminds me of the 80's with the brass railing but the food and service is always on point. My initial visit was awesome. I've been here two additional times since though, and sadly each visit has been a little worse than the last. I am now getting vibes that the food here is just plain old mediocre. My first meal was a Reuben sandwich, and it was excellent. When I ordered it again I was unimpressed though. I tried a burger most recently, and didn't really care for it. The fries aren't anything special. The soup that comes with the sandwiches could be better as well. Nothing was really bad, but it wasn't good either. Maybe I should have stuck to their breakfast items. That is what my wife got all three times, and she enjoyed her meals. One thing I will say though is that their meals are reasonably priced. That is probably the main reason that we have gone back. They just need to make better lunch entrees! read more

I'm just got to say this... Food was okay, pancakes- take like bisquick and they were burnt. French toast - nothing too exciting. Everything must have been cooked in butter because my over-easy eggs were yellow -_- "warm maple" syrup was not really maple syrup because there should have been a solid layer on top of it was it cooled.
