I went to Moonshine Patio with one of my teams from work and had reserved the Sunday House as a private dining space. The food was amazing, server was awesome, the space was unique and had a lot of history, being that we were told it is the 2nd oldest building still standing in Austin! I had the chicken fried steak with garlic mashed potatoes and could not finish more than half. In hindsight, I should have asked one of my coworkers if they wanted to split it! We ordered several of the appetizers, including the corn dog shrimp, the street corn queso, the brisket burnt ends quesadilla, and the hot honey wings. I got to try everything except the corn dog shrimp, and it was all delicious! Would definitely recommend and will more than likely be bringing more of my teams from work there in the future. Moonshine Grill is everything you want in a classic Austin dining experience--warm, welcoming, and absolutely delicious. It started with popcorn, and it ended with a delicious cornbread with honey butter, and everything in between was excellent. We kicked off with the shrimp corndogs, which were fun, crispy, and packed with flavor. The blueberry mustard was a nice surprise! For mains, we had the chicken fried steak (perfectly crispy with rich gravy) and a simple but spot-on eggs and hamburger patty with avocado. Everything was cooked just right, with that comforting Southern touch. But the real standout? Our waitress, Hope. She was absolutely outstanding--attentive, friendly, and made us feel right at home. Great service can make or break a meal, and Hope definitely made ours even better. If you're in Austin and craving some elevated comfort food, Moonshine Grill is a must. Yeah, it was OK. The location was great, right at the heart of the downtown, the ambiance was amazing, the interior , the decor , the lights, the brunch barn set-up, they were all impeccable! I went here for Valentine's day dinner and luckily got a reservation. Being a vegetarian, it sometimes is hard to dine at a Souther restaurant, but it is 2025 right?! so still ventured. Parking is a hassle and I would recommend getting there early and park outside in the streets but you could also use the parking lot which charges around $45-$65. Once seated, we were welcomed immediately with a basket of fresh pop-corn. Nothing great about it but it still tasted good. My order: Roasted Garlic bulbs Beyond Veggie burger Mac & Cheese Old Fashioned The Mac & Cheese was a disaster and the taste was dismal and gets your bored in a few bites. The veggie burger was dry and bland. The garlic bulbs were complicated to eat. The service was great. Loved the old fashioned, glad they didn't go wrong with that. read more

The food was incredible! I'm thankful to our server, the manager, and the hostess for their great service. The ambiance was very relaxed and laid-back, complemented by some music in the background. While street parking is limited, they do offer valet service for $12. We tried the Wagyu Salisbury Steak (5/5), the Brisket Burnt Ends Quesadillas (5/5), and the Peanut Butter Mousse Cake--perfect for any peanut butter fan! Oh my gosh! Food was so good-it will send you into a food coma. We couldn't decide what to get so we went with the chicken and waffles, Mac and cheese, pretzels, and another chicken dish with potatoes (which totally melted in your mouth). EVERYTHING was great and had seasoned well overall and fresh. I would highly recommend checking this place out if you're looking for some southern food. This place is also historic so it was very cozy of a place and gave the vibes of eating with family. I also want to note we had a party of 18 and staff took such good care of us. And helped us through the ordering and process of making sure we were well taken care of. So cheers to the staff for their hospitality! It's been years since I've been here for the brunch buffet and decided to come out for Easter. I was so happy that we were able to make reservations and I highly recommend. Overall, everyone in our part was happy and left full. They had a great spread and service was good. We asked to move tables due to my mom having some mobility issues and her walking up and down the stairs would been difficult and we were placed right near the bussing station. Easter brunch was also an up charge due to the carving station which only had two meats - not sure it was worth the almost $20/pp more. But overall, we never felt rushed and enjoyed everything. read more

Came here twice on my trip to Austin and I would go back a third time if I'm ever in the area. I ordered the chicken fried steak on my first visit and was impressed by the combination of flavors between the steak and the chipotle gravy. The baked macaroni was pretty standard however I enjoyed the cornbread quite a bit. For happy hour I ordered friend pickle spears which were a delight and the calamari which was fresh. A great place for brunch especially when you're visiting. The place has a chill vibe the staff are always friendly and attentive. I came here recently and had pork chop with Yukon mashed potatoes. It was amazing, medium temp bone in pork chop. On top of the pork was a sweet glazed apples. The mashed was savory and I like how it wasn't flooded with gravy. Cornbread was disappointing, dry and bland. I have heard about Perry's happy hour pork chop for $19 but I have not tried it. Moonshine's is $23 any day and anytime. Let's start with our waiter, Chris. He was so nice and knew his stuff. He was very sociable and knew the menu. We 99% went with his recommendations and have no regrets. I'm a bourbon girl and that slush, so freaking good!! He said it was popular and I know why - SO GOOD!! The steak and Brussels, I'd have to say was my favorite. Seasoned to perfection and tender/melt in your mouth. The fam loved the chicken fried steak. It was on a bed of garlic mashed potatoes topped with some seriously good gravy. We got the biscuits as our app. My sister and I both love bread so this was a must. Our husband's loved the jelly but I liked the honey butter better. It soaked into the biscuits making each bite sweet & buttery. Hands down the best place we ate while in Austin. If you stop in, ask to be sat in Chris's station. Came here for a birthday party. They are very adept at handling large groups and it shows. There was almost 20 people in our group and the service never stopped. I also observed another large party near us and it was the same. A+ there. They stayed busy as it was a Saturday night and seem to be very popular. Weather was bad but thank goodness for the valet. Made it easy. The menu looked really appealing to me prior to going and there were some things I definitely wanted to try. I got the corn dog shrimp appetizer to start. I get what they are going for but there was no flavor to this appetizer. Very unseasoned. The breading was nice and shrimp cooked well I just wish there was more flavor to it. I ordered the catfish and had a similar feel. The catfish was flavorless. Cooked well. Topped with crawfish tails and sauce. But the catfish itself could have benefited from more seasoning. I also heard mixed reviews on the shrimp and grits. The pork chop looked really delicious and I wish I had gone with that. The grits are fine, not creamy but stone ground so it's almost like a mound of rice. The sweet potatoes were tasty. All in all a great time was had. Definitely would try the pork chop next time. (4.5 stars) Housed in a historic building, Moonshine exudes charm, which is why it was packed even on a Monday night. I was lucky enough to find a seat at the bar. While the bartenders were great, the noise levels prompted me to make mine a quick meal. Had I caught Moonshine during a less busy time, I suspect I really would have enjoyed the experience. Instead, I'll have to settle for "only" really liking the food. Moonshine's menu is a fun mix of Mexican and Southern influences with steaks, chops, and burgers thrown in as well. I usually pounce on shrimp and grits and would have here had not a blackened catfish caught my eye. Thankfully, it proved to be the right call. It came topped with crawfish tails, a not-hot hot sauce, and pecan meuniere and served with stone ground grits. The fish was flaky, the grits were creamy and cheese, the pecans added a welcome crunch, and while hot sauce may have been a misnomer, damn if it wasn't good. It paired well with an Austin Eastcider (when in Rome...) Blackberry, and at under $30 pre-tax, it felt like a good deal for a good meal. If I'm ever back in Austin, a return to Moonshine seems like a must. I'll just need to catch them during a slower hour...if such exists. read more

Ambiance is on point and servers are stellar. Prices were very reasonable for the location. We shared the biscuits app (which were the best part of our dining experience), I had a side salad with ranch and something in the spring mix was very spicy . Not the dressing. ‍ They are famous for chicken fried steak so I ordered that since it is one of my fave dishes. Well, when they set it down and it covered the whole plate, I thought this is going to be fun! Wrong. There was no seasoning to the steak (wafer thin cube steak), no seasoning to the breading and the gravy was disappointing as well. It didn't have a fresh from the hot oil to it either, and I told my hubby it tasted like school cafeteria food. I pulled off that breading that was about half that entree to try to eat the steak with some salt and pepper, but still no. The garlic mashers were good with flavor, texture (little rustic), and temperature. We ordered the banana pudding and that actually was very good, even with whatever alcohol was in the sauce. That pudding was delicious and I would come back for that for sure. Warning - the corn bread is sweet cornbread. Not my thing. read more

It was our first time coming here before checking out 6th street which is a quick walk down the street from there. It's a bit more upscale and it had some nice details on the inside. The service was great, our waitress was really friendly, attentive, and was able to answer all our questions. We went with the salmon which had this creamy sauce on top, dill, and I substituted the veggies for mashed potatoes. Overall, the dish was great, salmon was cooked nicely. Sunday brunch we are always on the lookout for a good place! My babe found this place and we have been looking for Southern-style food and were surprised with a buffet style with so many options! Service was amazing from being greeted by the host to being served at the bar area. I would recommend having a reservation ahead of time because this place is very busy on Sundays but the bar is first come basis. I love the style of the restaurant it gives the old Austin Heart of Texas such a cute and fun atmosphere. There is plenty of seating inside or you can go outside and there is a bar area too! Went for lunch on Saturday 12/07/24. It was a rainy day so we parked with the Valet $12. When we left noticed a parking lot right next to the restaurant that would have been an easy walk. I would check the pricing and park there next time. The space is really cool and is very muck a throw back to the early 1900s. The service was great and the popcorn was very tasty. I thought the food was good just not great. I had the CFS and it was cooked nicely but the breading fell off easy and kind of made a mess. My wife had the burnt ends quesadillas and liked it. I found Moonshine Bar & Grill while staying at the downtown Austin Hilton and looking for "Brunch Near Me" on Yelp. It was the first spot to come up and as always Yelp did not steer me wrong! The restaurant is located in a historic building that was originally built as a mercantile store in 1857. It's a super cool space with a great vibe. We could not get reservations but the website states that they only accept limited reservations because they want people to be able to walk in, and encouraged folks to come by anyway. We were able to be seated in the bar area and shout out to bartender Jessica, she took great care of us. Brunch is a buffet spread over several tables in two rooms. Even though the place was packed we never had to wait to serve our plates. Quite a variety of foods and most everything was a hit. It was super fun to have so many choices and for my friends and I to compare notes. read more
