I ordered the KBBQ Steak Salad with a side of their sesame kale slaw, roasted mushrooms, and pickled onions, as well as a side of their hot honey sauce, and man... was I pleasantly surprised! I appreciate the portions they give you. Normally, I'd complain about an establishment skimping on protein or the sides, but moonbowls has a fairly equal distribution of everything. And is packed full of flavor and fresh ingredients! Next time, I'll be sure to try a different sauce. The hot honey was a good combination for my bowl, but it was too sugary for my taste. IMHO, rating my first experience with moonbowls, I give it 3.5 stars rounded up. In general, my Avocado Bulgogi bowl was tasty and filling. It's made with Impossible meat, kimchi, peppers, and caramelized onions. For my base, I opted for the citrus-marinated kale which didn't taste very citrusy nor marinated for that matter. Luckily I like kale and didn't mind that it was plainer than I expected. The main thing that knocked it down for me was that parts of the Impossible meat were overcooked. About 5 bites in, I bit into something super hard. It was a crunchy piece of Impossible. The rest of the bowl wasn't nearly as hard as this bite. Any other crunchy pieces, and there were only a few, were still edible compared to that super hard bite that I had to spit out. To be fair, the remaining portion of Impossible was non-crunchy and delicious. And also a generous portion. I really loved the flavors of the kimchi, peppers, and onions mixed with Impossible. I barely got any kale (which wasn't as good as before), and the rice was different (not bamboo). The flavors just didn't hit right. Additionally, there were issues with their website not being accurate and this location not being as open (literally) as they used to be. For the last two meals, I paid $40 + a 20min RT pickup (x 2) for this and it's honestly not worth it anymore. I've been here 4 times and I've had one satisfactory meal here. But that one time...it was AMAZING, and the owner is really nice and really cares about feedback. It's not moonbowls themselves, impossible meat just has a weird play doughy/idk-what-it-is but has an off-putting taste to it. I've tried to like impossible meat in multiple forms (burgers, nachos, tacos) but there's something about it that just doesn't sit with my tastebuds. Maybe the bulgogi could've been a tad more seasoned to mask the signature impossible-meat-taste better. The place is listed as "Korean" so I thought there would be some kimchi of some sort.
