After reading all the raves about this place, I was looking forward to a pleasant experience. Unfortunately, it was not to be. Lunch time so opted for the chicken gyro. Supposed to be spit roasted chicken. It arrived stir fried and more than a little soggy in cooking oil. But gave it a go. Unwrapping it at the table...after ordering eat-in....a minor faux pas. It was revealed to be assembled with all the attention to detail of a Big Mac at rush hour. Very unimpressive. Paying the check, I mentioned to the young man that ordering for in-house warrants the food being served on a plate. Not wrapped in tin foil to be eaten over a sheet of wax paper, as it was. Tacky. He must have thought my suggestion was an invitation to a debate. And shot back that only platters are served on a plate. So next time (and it might be a while), I'll have to remember to bring my own mess kit. read more

Grizzle in the lamb and a brown sauce on all meats keeps you from tasting the tzaziki sauce and makes a mess that needs a sink to remove. I have definitely had better. It's ok for a one time visit. read more

So, a craving hit again, and I decided to try my luck once more. Ordered large mujadarrah (sp?) to go after inquiring as to the sizes offered. A large should have been sufficient as a side dish for my family of 5. Once I got to my car, I opened the bag and in the tin was approximately ONE CUP of the rice/lentil mixture. It would have been a very small serving in the SMALLER-SIZED tin (I figured it would have been a fine 1/2 cup side serving for a party of two)!!! I immediately returned to the restaurant and inquired as to why this amount would be considered "large". The rep took the tin, opened it, added about 3/4 cup more, and said, "I did you a favor, just for you"; I was appalled. So since I was in no hurry to return on my previous visit, now I will NOT be returning ever. This place is my favorite!! Monroe/Trumbull doesn't have a lot of great Mediterranean places, so when this place opened I was excited to try it. The people who work here are super friendly and nice, and their food is delicious! I come here during my lunch break every day to get food and they're always quick and friendly (plus the food is cheap). Definitely worth a try! read more

Unfortunately, we did not have the same experience as other reviewers. My fiancé and I came here for dinner and each ordered the Greek salad with chicken shawarma. It was the saddest Greek salad I have ever seen. There were literally 4 small pieces of tomato, a couple cucumbers, and four chunks of feta with lettuce and chicken. There was no dressing... we had to ask for lemon and oil. There are no olives in the whole restaurant either. Service was poor. The only reason I am giving them 2 stars instead of 1 is because my fiancé liked their falafel. The other dishes on their menu may be good but steer clear of their Greek salad. Oh, and expect to pay for bottled water if you order water. read more

This place is real. Everything fresh and they try their best to make it authentic, and I think it is. Lamb kebab is my favorite. I ask for it rare. The garlic paste and the crushed red pepper sauce on the side are key additions for me. I go back all the time. Price vs quality is justifiable. read more

This is hands down the best Middle Eastern restaurant I've ever been to! The food is excellent, the service is friendly and impressively fast, and the atmosphere is lovely as well. I recommend the chicken shawarma. You can get it as a wrap, but it's even better as part of their Royal Platters, where a generous helping of the shawarma is served over baba ganoush, spicy rice, or a few other options, all of which are delicious. The Royal Platters come with side dishes like hummus, fattoush salad, tabbouleh, and stuffed grape leaves (my personal favorite). Don't be afraid to ask for what you need. We asked for a side of hot sauce and were pleasantly surprised by their housemade sauce, which is absolutely wonderful and highly recommended (the flavors are very strong but the heat isn't overwhelming, which I appreciate). I also asked if I could try a sample of their spicy rice before ordering it, and they gave us a good portion of it so all of us could have a bite. I'm from San Francisco, though I'm visiting my boyfriend's family on the East Coast. Moving my sister out of storage today and we needed a place to eat. Decided to try Royal Falafel and SSSOOOO glad we did. Lentil soup was piping hot, grape leaves, chicken gyro, falafel and hummus was amazing! A BIG shout out to Lola who took very good care of us! Great tasting food! Ordered lamb shawarma and chicken shawarma wraps, along with the falafel balls. Really tasty. And usually I don't like falafel but this was not too dry so it was good. I came in and ordered for takeout and got the food within 10 to 15 minutes so not much of a wait. The restaurant itself seems like a nice place to sit down and have a meal with booth seating as well as table and chair seating. One wrap is very filling. We ate at this restaurant the other day. Awful awful and more awful. Service terrible. We were 2 minutes from walking out and there was no one in the restaurant. That makes us wonder. Ordered lamb gyro. Wrapped in wax paper and foil. I'm eating in not taking out. The puta was soggy from the lamb which was greasy, no flavor and I wondered if I was eating some beef. There were 2 slices of tomato, no onion. And if it was there I would need a magnifying glass. Few sliced pickles ??? In a gyro??? Came home and threw up from the grease. Yay finally Monroe has a great falafel eatery. The town of Monroe is getting more diverse with very good ethnic eateries, already we have good Thai and Indian restaurant places as well. The falafel was as good as the ones I order in NYC. Royal Falafel is located where there use to be a Thai restaurant, next to the Dairy Queen on Monroe Turnpike (RT 111). I've eaten at Layla's in Fairfield and that was OK, but now I don't have to drive far to get a good falafel. I ordered the falafel sandwich with hot sauce which was in a wrap. It was delicious and I also got a container of their wrapped grape leaves and that was also delish, both great flavors. Next I look forward to trying their gyros. Friendly service too. For those vegetarians and falafel fans, check this place out. Highly recommend this place. read more
