Today I had one of most amazing experience going to what I consider the BEST Puerto Rican food in Bridgeport, CT. I am biased bc I truthfully have not tried every P.R. restaurant in Bridgeport, CT. However what I love most about Coquito is there yellow arroz con condules. OMG! So flavorful and the taste of the sofrito comes through in there rice every time for me. I crave their rice. Okay enough let me get to the food we ate today. The steak was VERY tender and flavorful. Rice and beans are always cooked well. Not overcooked or undercooked. Perfect on the flavor. The bacaloa was delicious and paired WELL with the monfongo y camarones. Oh man, when we ordered it we went early to get seating and the chef said im gonna make it. She asked if we wanted it on a plate and we said yes. Oh boy the sauce ughhhh was ahmazingly garlicky and seasoned well. The cilantro notes came through. It was my 1st time having it but my fiancé 2nd and it did not disappoint. We came in for monfongo y camarones, we planned for the surf n turf, but changed it for the pepper steak with yellow rice beans. We also ordered the bacalao with yellow rice once i discovered they had it on the menu. We also ordered two beverages with coconut milk or coconut juice with coconut coquito and parcha juice with coconut coquito (co-workers recommendation). I don't know what this is called though. This is soooo refreshing. I've seen people ordered this so many times and never knew it was this amazingly delicious! The service is always good when I come here. I've been coming here since their old location and i must admit the service and food have definitely came a long way. Good ambiance. We did have to go early to avoid long lines and open availability for table and booth access to dine in as well as parking. This is a frequent P.R.restaurant I visit and so far my favorites have been the yellow rice, carne fritas, pastelios, pepper steak, and bacalao. The food was outrageous. Plenty of parking. I thought my favorite Puerto Rican food was in Waterbury. I was wrong this place was packed at about 3:30p and it was the best I have had. Definitely will go back. I knew that with a name of "El Coquito", that it had to be good. I love coconuts and the ambiance was great. This was our first time here and all the food looked fresh and delicious with constant replenishing from the busy kitchen. We tried the beef empanadas and the alcapauria and liked them both. I would love to try any of the other dishes, as all looked and smelled so good. The entire place was clean, including the restrooms. Although the parking lot is small, the restaurant itself is spacious, the staff are incredibly friendly and patient even with the line almost to the door. And the food! OMG. Delicious. The pork shoulder (pernil) is tender and juicy, the skin crispy/crunchy. The yuca and the escabeche are perfect. The arroz con gandules has great flavor. And they don't skimp on anything. This spot might be might favorite for Spanish food in bridgport so far. The food is clean and delicious. I usually try and get the peril with rice and gondules. Or the whole chicken with a side of the mojito sauce with rice and red beans. They also have a really good potato ball. Aka relleno de papa. Overall, the food is consistent and pretty good. The stew meat is a little on the saltier side. My favorite dessert is the coconut and parcha ice cream mix. The service was a little slow and the employee who helped us wasn't very friendly. I would definitely go back for the food though. read more

I went to El Coquito this Sunday to try out their ice cream, and to compare it with another spot in BPT. This review is about my experience, not about the result. El Coquito's sell more than just ice cream though. They have delicious dishes from the Island of PR, and it is a household name in the city. If you haven't you have to come and try it for yourself. There is plenty of parking, and this newly built location allows you to sit inside as well to enjoy some good food. Back to the ice cream. The portions are generous, and come in different sizes, styrofoam cups with a plastic lid. Not really good for the environment, but it stays cool. I've been going to El Coquito since I was a little girl, back when it was a small place to pick up bomb Puerto Rican food. The food is delicious--I've tried everything from the pernil to the pollo guisado to the bistec. Everything has been well seasoned and cooked. The portion sizes are huge for a very reasonable prices. The empanadas and other cuchifritos do what they need to and to add a cherry on top they also sell their signatures fruit flavored icecream/sherbert. I usually don't like to eat at Puerto Rican restaurants because the food can't get any better than home but this is possibly the closest it comes to home. The restaurant has table seating but most people come in for takeout. You never have to worry about the food being old and stale, they normally have a line waiting and they turnover the food in the warm plates quickly. They have all the frituras you would expect: alcapurrias, pastellios, relleno de papa and so on. As far as the main dishes they serve white rice and beans, arroz con gandules, carne frita, carne quisada and pollo quisado, pernil and many other things as well. Once you are done with your meal you can also have an icee which are the best in town. The restaurant is always clean and the employees are very nice.
