I grew up in New Mexico. Los Quates in Albuquerque, La Choza in Santa Fe, Carrillo's in Clovis, Lucy's in Carlsbad, Capitol Cafe in Roswell (my home town) - I've eaten at all of them. I still order cases of salsa shipped from Las Cruces because I've never found anything on the east coast that comes close - until now. Green Chilitos is the real thing. The tacos, the homemade salsas, the queso, the black bean dip was amazing. The guy who owns it really cares... Portions are REALLY big - like leftover lunch big and terrific. The space is small and simple - don't come here for the ambiance. but the food is really the star. One humble suggestion for GC (I decided to give it a nickname)... throw up a BYOB sign out front. This is Fairfield. We will show up with a bottle of wine faster than you can say guacamole. A sign in the window could change your business overnight. We stopped by as we passed through and this restaurant did not disappoint. A paper sign in the window said "take out only" but the owner served us at the outdoor table anyway. Wow. The mole sauce is amazing - like what I had in Mexico 30 years ago and never found since. The two homemade salsas had complex and balanced flavors from smoked vegetables. This was a wonderful find. We were there after lunch and we were not starving so decided to get some guacamole and chicken enchiladas with mole sauce - to split. First the owner brought us some chips with three salsas. Excellent! Then the enchiladas and the guacamole- over the top special. We have had some excellent mole sauce in MX - this was equal to any. All I can say is wow. We stopped here for dinner on the way home from New Jersey. We're actually trying to go to the restaurant next-door to this place, but they were closed even though it said they were open online. When we walked in, it was small and it was clear that it was really a takeout place. We were very hungry, so we ended up staying, and the owner waited on us. He served us chips that were absolutely delicious, salsa, and black bean dip that was really really good. I like the flavor of it and mixed it with a spicy salsa. We both ordered burritos and they were absolutely ginormous. Like burritos, but they had a spicy, so I got it. The flavor of the burritos is absolutely delicious and the serving size was unreal. They did so much take out the time that we sat there. I would absolutely recommend this place. We're looking for Mexican. read more

I was excited to try Green Chilitos for the first time and the experience was even better than I thought it would be. Carlos made us feel welcome the minute we walked in. Coming from California, this is one of the only places I've found in Connecticut that can match west coast Mexican food. Very high quality and authentic. After reading the reviews, we decided to try Green Chilitos last night for dinner. It was delicious all around and we will be back. I should have known we were in for a treat when the owner brought out chips and two salsas, a tomatillo and a roasted red. Both freshly homemade and delicious, especially the tomatillo. We shared a chicken mole and chicken tinga plate. The mole is legit- best I've had in CT (by far) and the tinga was so flavorful. You can see the love made in each of these homemade dishes. What struck me about the mole was the fact that you could taste each individual ingredient separately, and yet together, it was the perfect marriage of flavor. The owner said it takes two to three days to make the mole and it shows. Truly exceptional. Small restaurant with a bustling take out business. Very fair prices, especially for the area. I'm going back to try the mole enchiladas next. Authentic Mexican food made lovingly by the owner who truly cares about what he puts on a plate and how he presents it. read more

Carlos is a warm, welcoming owner. He has been cooking since he was seven in Oaxaca, which led him to work with Hyatt before launching a restaurant in New Jersey and now this one. The chips with bean dip and salsas were good. The homemade queso had a nice spicy kick. But the complexity of the sweet and spicy molé sauce stole the show. He is accommodating of food allergies and even makes his molé without gluten. You can mix and match tacos to try various meats or veggies with sauces. We liked the chicken tinga and pork molé best. Then, beef. The fresh juices were refreshing. He had a pineapple lemon, hibiscus and even horchata. Go support this authentic Mexican spot. Great hidden gem, everything I've tried here is extremely delicious and prepared with care. Carlos, the owner, is super personable and clearly puts a lot into running this place. OMG... I don't know where to begin. Looking at all the positive reviews we decided to go to this place. First, I would advise everybody to please check your receipts before paying because the cost on the menu is different than what he charges when giving you your bill. We noticed this after we had paid the bill and when we questioned him, he said "oh the prices have not been updated on his menu, but they are updated on the website". This is not true. The cost is the same on the website, google and physical menu in restaurant. Also, I don't understand why while dine-in should the website price matter. When we called him later after checking out the website prices, he got really upset & abusive on the phone. Never going back here. Kitchen was filthy in the back ... got to see this mess on the walk to the restroom. read more

Today I downloaded yelp and created an account just so I could leave a 5 star review on this restaurant. I came with a small group after walking a marathon and we received excellent service, delicious food, and immense kindness from the owner. Among the four of us, we tried the tacos, chicken, mole sauce, pork al pastor, horchata, tomatillo salsa, and many other foods that we all agreed were the best we'd ever had. The owner is also extremely kind and we ended up talking with him for a while as we ate. This was easily one of the best dining experiences I've had in years, and I will be coming back often despite living nearly 40 minutes away by car. read more

TL:DR: amazing affordable food and the most amazing and caring owner! So my group and I just walked 23 miles on a frankly absurd trip and stumbled upon this place. Carlos, who was the owner, cook, cleaner, cashier, and everything else, was so sweet, immediately set us down, and gave us a full explanation of the two salsas provided with the chips! The food was great quality (especially coming from a place where authentic Mexican food is the norm, it was delicious) and at super affordable price. The drinks were cheap and great portions! What really was the greatest though is that Carlos is genuinely such a great man. He was very interested in us and our wellbeing, provided great wisdom, and let us know some of his story too. He works crazy hours nonstop with only a few hours of sleep a day and still manages to keep up a cheerful attitude and such a caring personality, and really made the ambiance great. I cannot recommend this place enough. Please go if you have the chance, it's so worth it, not just for the food, but the great company! read more

We had a great meal here! It's like homemade, authentic Mexican food. We got free chips and salsas to start, which is a nice surprise. The chips were warm and perfectly crisp. I also loved the salsas: one red, which had a kick, and another green, which was light and refreshing. The portions are huge. The food at Green Chilitos is awesome. The cheese enchiladas with red sauce were the best I've ever had - I could drink that red sauce it was sooo good! The cheese/rajas/tomato tamales were very fluffy and full of flavor. Even the chips are some of the best I've ever had. The salsa verde - drinkable - sooooo good. Good things come to those who wait! I've been watching the action at this location for the new restaurant taking over and it was, to my surprise, Mexican cuisine. Not many authentic mexican places in the area so it seems this may fill a niche. The place has been only open a few days from the time of this review. Everybody has growing pains, so be patient. After perusing the printed menu (the wall menu wasn't up yet) I chose a burrito and had a chance to speak with Carlos, the owner. He spoke at length about his interest in food and providing a customer connection in both food and service. While waiting for my food, he provided a cool watermelon drink gratis. If you gauged the meal solely on weight, this would be like 50 stars! It was a packed carnitas burrito along with a side of lettuce and cheese and guac. The taste did not disappoint. Although not cheap at $14, it could have been two meals here. I was more than satisfied. Next time (oh, there will be a next time) I think I might try a platter or collection of soft tacos. I'm wishing Green Chilitos all the best! N.B. Plenty of parking here usually during lunchtime, not much parking at night. Although there are seats indoors and out, think about ordering ahead. We had Enfrijoladas with black bean sauce; Carnitas Burrito; and Mexican Pizza Carnitas. All dishes tasted so fresh. Portions were large -- we only ate half of each dish. We visited this place today because of the reviews. I hate to say but the food here was amazing!!!! I read the review of a woman who posted this morning about the price change. Sadly, she was 100 percent right! We were charged $17.00 for each plate when the menu said $14.99 each! The guy said we got a new computer so the prices haven't changed. This is BS. I won't be going back because it's a shady way of doing business. My husband told them to update their menu. They could have taken 5 minutes to scratch off the prices and put the new price on. Food was delicious! We had the tacos. Steak and carnitas were especially tasty. The tortillas were surprisingly fresh and tasted homemade. We also tried the crispy taco which was similar to a taquito, definitely worth trying. Also tried the horchata and it was very yummy. Make sure to get the chips and salsa because the green salsa is a very good addition to the tacos. Green salsa was mild, red was hot. Salsa portions are generous. Chips were fresh. To top it all off, the owner Carlos couldn't have been nicer! He mentioned he moved here to Connecticut from NJ and he had so many nice things to say about our community. What a genuine guy.
