I came here on a lark one afternoon hoping to avoid the bored-as-shit, laconic-looking staff…read morenapping over at the Dry Dock Cafe up the street as well as to avoid kicking out a senseless gratuity to an ungrateful, unhelpful waitresses. I had read some suspiciously positive reviews about Dairy King on Yelp, and ordered a cheeseburger and fries. I get that generations of Norwalkers and others have fond memories of their time here, and it was with that fact in mind that I ignored my intuition and entered the outdated, near-empty facade just after noon. For the new and unititiated, a word of admonition: do not let your senses fool you. Dairy King looks like a dive, and tastes like a dive, and not in any delicious way. I get that going pretty much anywhere for ice cream on a hot summer day is fun. What I do not get are comments here asserting that Dairy King's food, particularly their burgers are anything more than mediocre, studiously average at best, and a dubious step up over major chains. To all who will, in the the romantic twilight after Little League games or movies, arrive at Dairy King hungry and ready and willing to scarf down just about anything, I hope for your sake that good experiences continue, that fine memories of family and friends are created and then savored in the hopefully delicious silence of your unfolding life. But for me Dairy King is far behind even the middle of the pack in it's chosen catagory, my days of eating "just about anything" are well behind me, and Dairy King will have to take it the rest of the way without me, at least until the day the real estate developers lean on City Hall to condemn that section of Main Avenue (under a phonied-up interpretation of the eminent domain statutes) and Dairy King inevitably (and blessedly) falls to the wrecking ball, destined to become mixed-use retail with residential up above.

Yup I must confess, me a self proclaimed foodie went fast food. We all have a moment of weakness…read more I was drawn in by the honey mustard chicken sandwich. I gave in an ordered it. Well the mistake I made was not realizing there were different variations. The sandwich I got was not the honey mustard version but a basic spicy recipe. As for flavor it was spicy for the sake of being spicy, no balance compared to Popeyes. It did have good crunch the chicken itself was moist. You actually saw and tasted the lettuce and tomatoes. For a store that was empty it seemed to take a while for my order to arrive. Another downside I found it difficult to understand the person behind the counter so that could have added to not knowing the sandwich I wanted was not what I ordered. The store itself was clean and inviting.

Wait....what?? Yelp! just asked me to review Burger King....while that is oddly funny, who is…read moreactually out there using Yelp to check the reviews of Burger King? Let's picture this: You're hungry, you're craving a juicy burger, and you decide to use Yelp to find a GREAT burger spot and add Burger King to the list. It's kinda like using the Michelin Guide to find a hot dog stand....but to each their own. But then I got to thinking about the foodies that might actually rate Burger King .... they've probably never set foot in a fast-food joint in their lives, but they decide to give their two cents about the Whopper. They're critiquing every little detail, from the fluffiness of the bun to the tanginess of the ketchup. Imagine the comments.... "The pickles on my Burger King burger were not artisanal enough!" or "The ambiance in the dining area was lacking... what I thought was original art on the wall was the dried remains of a ketchup and a mustard packet that had stuck and dried in place. I just don't understand why in the world would someone might turn to Yelp for validation of Burger King? I mean, if you're looking for a gourmet experience, there are plenty of other places to go. Burger King is not pretending to be anything it's not. And honestly, sometimes you just need a good ol' greasy burger that hits the spot. No judgment here! But, alas, I've now left a review of Burger King....you know what it is, you know what you'll get and you'll absolutely get the exact same Whopper you had the last time you went there, late night, with the munchies.... 2 stars now, but absolutely 5+ stars after 2am on the way home from a late night out......

It was late at night and there were maybe 2 customers inside. They had the big menus on their wall but they also had them on screens where you can proceed to make your order. They take card and you get a little ticket with your order number. Like any fast food restaurant, the food was pretty cheap so that was a plus lol. We got hot dogs, a salad and a drink. The hot dogs looked average and let me tell you, so not impressed. My hot dog was supposed to have crispy onions on it but when I got it, they were regular, could have been my misunderstanding or simply bad advertising, so I scraped them and that took away my ketchup and mustard, leaving my hot dog bald lol... The salad we got looked actually pretty good so I was willing to forgive them for the bad hot dog, thanks to this beautiful salad! The only thing, we asked for no peppers and the first thing I see when I open it, is a giant pepper. How can they get that wrong? It was an empty restaurant with about 2-3 workers so sure enough it shouldn't have been a problem. I got the balsamic vinaigrette, and boyyyyy let me tell you, that was the most tasteless salad I've ever had, it needed salt, it needed flavor, it needed SOMETHING! So I took a sip of my tropical coke and that was the only satisfaction and thing right that I got. Sure it was cheap and at least it filled up my belly but it did NOT fill my heart, so unless you run out of food options and this is the last place on earth standing, I would rather eat at home lol.

It looks like any other sub shop however there are rules. So make sure you read the menu. There is a standard way of ordering - as in lingo. I was actually nervous when I was up to order because everyone ahead of me seemed to know exactly what to say? You have to call your order but the # and then say "mikes way" or list off the ingredients you want. Honestly the guy making my sub seemed very unhappy to be there and wasn't very kind. I ordered the half sub and it was more than enough. I wished I could have chosen a different bread because this role seemed just basic. But the fillings made up for it. Fresh cut meats and cheese, thin shredding lettuce and tomato then mayo. It was great in its simplicity. I'd say the price is reasonable for what you get. If you can, definitely give it a try!

After ordering 30 minutes prior they hadn't even started it. I don't know where these manager find these employees, I know inmates with better manners than them. The staff is always friendly, welcoming, and really informative. They're happy to walk you through the menu and make recommendations based on what you like. It's also surprisingly vegetarian- and vegan-friendly, they offer vegan meats so you can swap them into a lot of the classic dishes, which is rare for a taqueria. The food is outstanding. Even the free chips and salsa they start you with are memorable: the chips are fresh and super crunchy, and the salsa has real depth of flavor, not just heat. The entrées are some of the best value around, the burritos are massive (one could easily feed two or three people), and for takeout, the quesadillas literally come in a pizza box, which tells you everything you need to know about portion size. Their appetizers, queso, and house-made hot sauce are all excellent and full of flavor, not just spice. Most times I've been, the service has been fast, even when they're busy. The interior is clean, colorful, and decorated with authentic touches, so it feels fun and relaxed whether you're dining in or just grabbing takeout. If you're searching for great Mexican food in Norwalk, big portions, vegetarian/vegan options, and friendly service, Rincon Taqueria is easily one of the best spots around. Highly recommend.
