This little gem in SoNo is simply amazing. Authentic Mexican food you will find in any Pueblo outside of cities. The decor is phenomenal, tasteful, and not over the top, with legends of folklore, music, and movies. The service was amazing as well. For an app, I had flautas con guacamole, and they were delicious. I had the carne asada, and it was cooked to perfection. For dessert, the chocoflan. I went on a Thursday and it was empty. The server told me that most of the business is on Sunday for folks who go after church. However, please go during the week because their drink selection, happy hour, and the food, ¡está de madre! We need to support the businesses on Main Street, as many of them are closing. I would hate for this spot to close as well. We know South Norwalk is changing. Some say for the better, some say otherwise. However, we just want the neighborhood to keep its community feeling, attracting new businesses and new neighbors, like myself, and keeping these mom-and-pop stores alive and thriving. I have been here many times and absolutely love the feel and decor of the restaurant! The resturant is located in the heart of South Norwalk with a colorful interior reminiscent of actually being in Mexico. The restaurant has a fully stocked tequila bar, mariachi on Fridays and a bakery full of one's favorite Mexican baked goods. The staff is also very kind and makes you feel welcome. We came here for a birthday celebration for a friend and they really knew how to hosted. They have mariachi bands come on a schedule (I forgot it - call ahead) but this Friday night we came was one of the nights for the band. I ordered a lomo saltado and it was absolutely delicious! If you are looking for authentic Mexican cuisine PLEASE come here. There is nothing bad I can say! The tamales were AH-MAZING! The corn flavor was so robust but not overpowering. The Gordita with carnitas (slow roasted pork) is a MUST! Along with a side of sweet plantains - you will not be sorry. Drink of choice this night was mojito and did it DELIVER! Wow! Had to flag waitress to pay after waiting for check. Molcajete chicken left allot to be desired with breading that fell off, beef was tough and a few shrimp. For us, this Mexican food was flavorful and different from what we are used to in Colorado. The food was outshined by the service! Our server did everything he could to make us feel welcomed. We had Los Portales as takeout, seeking good Mexican food in delivery distance. I wasn't super disappointed, but I likely will continue my search. To share, we started with guacamole and chips. Background, I am great at making guacamole, so I have high standards (full disclosure: good guac is easy to make). Their guacamole was pretty bad, I have to admit. It was poorly mixed, under-seasoned, and with too large chunks of onion--we might as well have had avocado with cilantro in it. I enjoyed the pastor burrito as my meal. The meat was certainly flavorful, and maybe a bit heavy. I didn't enjoy the big chunks of jalapeño, but managed without pulling those out. It was a good burrito, but I had to make a sauce to accompany it to tie it all together. It was authentic, I will admit. And the menu speaks volumes about authenticity with very abnormal options (at least for someone who is not from this culture) of almost every part of the pig and cow that you can imagine (tongue, head, liver, etc). I probably won't go back, but it's possible the place deserves another try. read more

A very simple food location with a fun ambiance. Went on Friday night around 7 and didn't leave until 10. The restaurant is right next to a very traditional Mexican bakery and there are not too many tables available but it does have a large bar area. The owners work side by side with the employees so the services is very good. Only reason 4 stars instead of 5 is the menu selection is someone limited. I like the ceviche and the tacos! read more

Positive: I love that I finally found a Mexican bakery in Norwalk! My pink concha was perfect. Negative: I had the weirdest enchiladas here that I've ever had in my life. First off, I ordered the red enchiladas. The menu didn't say "mole enchiladas," it just said "red." So I was surprised when I took a bite to taste that the sauce was sweet, like mole. My next surprise is that the enchiladas were not warm and did not taste like they had been baked. The cheese inside was not even melted. In fact, the cheese inside the enchiladas was chunks of white Cotija cheese, the crumbly cheese that's usually sprinkled on top of an enchilada, not inside. The whole combination was so off for me that I couldn't even finish this dish. I gave it to my husband who also agreed that it was really bad. Not sure if I'll be making it back to Los Portales for anything but the baked goods! read more

Great addition to SoNo and especially the breakfast scene. I love the pastries here and at the Columbian place on the corner. Appreciate the long counter for quick and easy service. Convenient to grab and devour some tacos quickly. They had a nice juice menu though I didn't try any. More upscale ambience would draw me back for dinner, but, in general, I don't love going out in SoNo. read more

I'm so glad I found this place. It's one of those great "hole in the wall" places where the food is fabulous and you get a lot of bang for your buck. My husband got the steak especial burrito and it came with a great side portion of rice, beans, avocado and salad. A ton of food for $12. I had a chorizo especial baleada for $8 and it was very filling. Finished it up with a delicious slice of flan and I was full for the rest of the day. I'll definitely be back. read more

Awful! I just ordered on Grubhub. My order was wrong and when I called to ask for the correct food, the woman was incredibly rude and told me to call grub hub. I asked her if it was an issue with grub hub or did they get the correct order. The woman said they had the right order but the delivery man gave me the wrong bag and I need to call grub hub. I said I just wanted my food and she said I would have to place another order. I was very disappointed at the fact that the restaurant did not care enough fix their mistake. The food that was correct was not very good either. I called grub hub for a refund. Will never order from Los Portales again read more
