I am from Southern California and I spent a lot of time camping and surfing in Mexico growing up. I'm a Mexican food snob. My primary Mexican cuisine experience was when I lived not far from the border in Tucson, Az for years but Rancho Alegre beats everything I've eaten before. Very sociable and welcoming, totally casual so wear your jeans. Reservations over the phone are accepted. When you get there say hi to Ron and Mercedes, our wonderful servers and our amazing chef, Arturo.Bring your appetites because the portions are generous and although we had no room for desert we were told that Mercede's Flan is unbelievable. Don't do it. We watched people get up and leave because of the service but we stuck it out. It took over 35 mins for us to order our first drink and ourdrinks were super sugary, they add sugar to their specialty drinks read the menu and the food seemed like it came from a Ortega Kit. They skimped on the meat in the FAJITA TACO SALAD . Two think strips of rare steak. Our waiter was snarky and pressured us to make decisions as we just sat down, and it took over an house to get waters or another round of drinks our waiter disappeared yet it really wasn't busy until we were there a 3rd hour which was ridiculous. We were all happy to leave. I heard they are better when no one is there? I'm not going back to find out. At first after reading some of the other reviews I have to admit that I was a bit hesitant to come in here - but sometimes negative reviews force owners to do a complete 180 and shake things up to improve their business. That is the mark of a good manager / owner. If the other reviews reflect how this place actually was, then this place has a good management staff. I walked in expecting a dump, or even from how it looked on the outside I thought it may even be closed; but, like people, I enjoy giving second chances. So anyway, I walked in and was immediately greeted by someone who was obviously the manager, and the waiter. I wish I would have gotten their names. I was the only customer there that I saw, but it was 2:30pm or so on a Wednesday. I am sure they do good business for lunch and dinner. The two gentlemen that greeted me were EXTREMELY polite, and delivered me a king-size "sir sandwich" before I even ordered anything! The waiter asked me if I would like a window table, to which I replied in the affirmative and he showed me to my seat. Immediately he asked if I wanted anything to drink, I wanted water and said I was already ready to order (that's right ladies, I know what I want! - A vegetarian burrito). The vegetarian burrito came with squash, mushrooms, broccoli, beans and some other stuff and was topped with a tomato base sauce and melted cheese, served with a side of refried beans, rice and lettuce. It was about 8-9$ and very filling. The water also immediately brought over a warm pile of fresh tortilla chips (at least if they weren't fresh I couldn't tell the difference) and yummy pico de gallo salsa. The entire meal was very satisfying, I loved the decor and atmosphere, great customer service and nifty little tidbits like flamboyant sombreros I am assuming they'd let me wear one if I wanted?? I was too shy to ask. Who wants to serve a guy that goes to a Mexican restaurant, asks for a sombrero and sits by himself in a corner!? Creepy. One thing of particular note is that they have the COOLEST salt and pepper shakers in the history of the universe!!!!! They are Coronita bottles with some kind of fabricated rubber top fixated to the top with little holes cut out for the salt and pepper to fall out of. Great idea, I loved it. Give them a chance, I thought they were incredible. They may have some not-so-great reviews in the past, but sometimes a zebra can change it's stripes. Rancho Alegre is a decent Mexican restaurant. Not fantastic, not sucky either. The food is about average. The first few times I went many years ago it was pretty bad but in the last couple it improved quite a bit. The owners are super, super friendly and make you feel at home. But, unless your home is full of 90 yelling children running around, that quickly wears off. The place is always packed with families and the kids always seem to be screaming for one reason or another. Parents are often too blasted on margaritas to seem to care. Parking is always a pain in GTown so be careful walking down the middle of main street. The parents on margaritas eventually get into their cars... read more

My husband and I had been toying around with trying Rancho ever since we moved to Branchville; but, the reviews kept us away. Luckily we tried it anyway during the snow storm last week! This place was delicious. The atmosphere was festive. The wait staff and owner were phenomenally nice, and tried to make our experience the best possible.
