I'm glad that I picked Gruel Britannia for breakfast. Gruel, which means, a food consisting of some type of cereal, such as ground oats, wheat, rye, or rice - heated or boiled in water or milk. The restaurant couldn't be better decorated with British items. Everywhere you turn, you'll see the Queen, King Charles, Lady Diana, and even British food items. They thought of everything....even the restrooms are nicely adorned. The service was incredible. From start to finish, we were treated with the attention, quick service, and delicious food. The orders were: Western Omelet, with multi grain bread & salad, egg white veggie frittata, with multi grain bread & salad, and French Toast, with bacon & peaches. Each item was delectable, fresh, and that French Toast brioche bread was the softest and sweetest I've ever tasted. After being dipped into the syrup, it became top three in my three year Yelp career...lol. You gotta try it! My 12 oz. Cafe Latte was just as good as the food and just capped off this delicious meal perfectly. If you find yourself in Fairfield, don't hesitate to stop into Gruel Britannia and enjoy a few moments surrounded by Britishy goodness.

I loved this spot! It's a British themed restaurant that we stopped by for breakfast and I'm obsessed! The decor is super adorable from all the flowers on the table in teapots to the life sized cardboard cutout of the queen of England. I ordered a latte and it had the prettiest latte art I've seen in a while. For my meal, I had a special which consisted of a French toast with a fruit compote and bacon in the side. I liked that the syrup came in the side so that I could choose how sweet I wanted the dish. We also got the burger which was a good option as well. There's also various British snacks that one can purchase. The service was super quick and we were in and out in record timing which was perfect for this busy late morning. Definitely want to go back to try more food here for other meals too!

I ordered the British Breakfast Plate without dairy. The server helpfully recommended swapping in hash browns for the bubble and squeak. The food was hearty, as expected--there were options for lighter fare, too. The mismatched place settings/teapots/ teacups were beautiful, and the wooden tables and decor contributed to a cute and approachable ambiance. Unfortunately, when I started setting up my breast pump, a woman, presumably the owner, came and asked me to pump in the bathroom "because there are young children here." Once I pulled down my shirt, she said it would be ok to pump at the table, but "in the future, please set up in the bathroom. This is a restaurant." I did not make a scene, but I am pumping milk for a young child, the young children were probably eating from a boob a year ago, and breastmilk is food - which is very proper at a restaurant.

Wonderful! I highly recommend this place!I love England, and when you visit here, you're in England. I highly recommend the loaded scone, but today they were out by the time I arrived. Instead of having the Victoria sponge with tea, I had the fish and chips! They were excellent! Service was friendly and fast. The food was fresh. Perfect!

An amazing place!! Love it very much. The interior, the food, and the price. I would say is one of the best places for coffee, tea, breakfast, and brunch. Definitely recommend!

"All the stories have been told Of kings and days of old, But there's no England now." (The Kinks) Well, I'd say there are plenty of signs of England at Gruel Britannia - Union Jacks all over, full size stand ups of King Charles and the late Queen Elizabeth, English delicacies all across their menu, and even an iconic red British telephone booth by the front door. Three of us popped in for lunch on Thursday and we were lucky to get a table. It's a small dining room that seats around 30. Our lunch was Fish and Chips, a Winston Churchill sandwich, and Thai Chicken Meatballs. Those six meatballs were my choice, and it was one of the very best things I've had so far in 2023. They cost $20 and were served with Jasmine rice, sautéed spinach, and an amazing curry sauce. Tons of flavor, a hint of spiciness, and just plain delicious. The Fish & Chips ($22) were served with sides of mushy peas and tartar sauce. The Churchill Sandwich was $16 with grilled chicken, avocado, bacon, cheddar, tomato, herb aioli, lettuce, brioche roll, and a side salad. We loved our food and liked all the little British touches everywhere -from the fancy coffee and tea cus to the English grocery specialties on display for sale in the dining room. Word to the wise - their parking lot is teeny tiny and you'll probably have to park in the street.

Had my eyes on this place for a while with the intention to visit. Today I came dfor Breakfast, cause I was in the mood for some good old English breakfast. We came around 10:30 and the parking lot was empty and first I was afraid that they were closed. But I was glad to see people walk out, and so we pulled into a parking spot and made our way to the entrance. From the outside it almost looks like being in the UK, and as you walk in the decoration still gives you that idea that you just stepped into an establishment in Britain. It's small and cozy, and after we sat down other customers started to walk in. We had the Full Breakfast and I loved it! It reminded me growing up in Europe and visiting the UK or having breakfast in Germany at the army base were British soldiers were stationed. Loved it and will definitely come back to introduce others to Gruel Britannia!

Ah, good ol' Black Rock (heaven forbid you call it 'Bridgeport!'), CT. There was a time (in my…read moretwenties) when I was a regular out in Black Rock, frequenting such long gone places like The Black Rock Castle, The Field, The Bitter End, Black Rock and Blue, etc. Then something happened. I would say that I grew up, but I know many who would disagree with that statement. So let's just say that I got older. You see, the Black Rock nightlife scene is wonderful if you're twentysomething looking for a casual night out somewhere where you can dress like a vagabond, stumble in and out of bars that are adjacent to one another, and get plastered without having to spend a whole lot of money. Now I don't mean to sound all high and mighty and above all of that, it's just that I can no longer pass for 26 (despite my best efforts), and out in Black Rock on a Friday night I can't help but feel like an overdressed square peg in a round hole. And if you're not a twentysomething in Black Rock, then you're probably an artist, an aging hippie of some sort, or a lifelong Black Rock native, the kind whose blood boils when their beloved coastal community is referred to as 'Bridgeport.' Artists, hippies, natives...they're all good people, it's just that I would stick out like a sore thumb around them. So aside from the killer pizza at Fire Engine Pizza Co. and the savory bites at Hub and Spoke, I avoid Black Rock. But having heard so much about Tautog Tavern over the last year or so, I decided to try to put aside my Black Rock hangups and show a good buddy of mine a fun time over a drink or two. Walking into Tautog Tavern last night with a bit of a narrow mind in regard to the surrounding area, I wasn't expecting much. In fact, my first impression was, 'Yep...typical dark and dingy Black Rock dive bar.' At each end of the bar were two seemingly lonely middle-aged men, nursing a beer (the twentysomethings were probably still at work or at the gym), while some Led Zeppelin blared. I was convinced I had made the wrong choice for happy hour. Fortunately, my mind was quickly changed. We were greeted by the bartender, who was pleasant and kind. I can't recall her name (I think it was Kerry?), but in talking with her, we quickly learned that she is well-cultured and well-traveled. Unlike most female bartenders who try desperately to be flirty or call their male patrons 'doll' or 'sweetie' in hopes of getting a better tip, Kerry was mellow and seemed to be a genuine conversationalist. I was also quite appreciative of her recommending I order the well vodka (and letting me sample it first) as it was nearly half the price of my usual Stolichnaya. A bartender doing the opposite of the upsell? Unheard of! I was impressed. I was also impressed that the drink was strong. My buddy and I took a quick look at the happy hour bar bites menu and ordered both the Pimento Cheese Fries and the wings, which were served in Sweet Thai Chili Sauce. Both were excellent, and the portions were hearty. The latter was a refreshing summer change to the usual greasy and sticky buffalo wings. The price was right, too. As I've always felt that drinking and music go hand and hand, I'm quite fond of any bar that has a TouchTunes digital jukebox, which allows you to program and pay for your music using your smartphone. Not many bars that I frequent in this area have this, but Tautog does, and I was delighted to be able to put together a setlist of music that I enjoy drinking to. When the setlist ended, the bartender asked what else we might like to hear. I suggested some Steely Dan, and she loaded up TouchTunes with a seemingly endless string of their hits and deep cuts. The bottom line is this- the overall vibe at Tautog Tavern is a good one, making an outsider like me feel very welcome. People were mellow, and there was even the most docile and beautiful German Shepherd hanging out in the place. And while it's highly unlikely that you'll find me cutting the rug there on a Saturday night alongside some unkempt millennials who are slugging down PBR while some jam-band plays (apparently the Tautog Tavern is a Black Rock hub for live music on the weekends), I will most definitely be back there sooner rather than later for happy hour. Hell, I may even stay for dinner as the menu looks quite good and the service was top-notch.

So I've actually debated whether or not to include this UberEats delivery review. The first time I…read moretried to go through with it, I just couldn't really figure out what to write. I only ordered it on UberEats this past Friday night, so it's not like I actually went there. However, the more I ate and thought about it, the more I realized something. This is the 4th year in 6 I've done a pre-birthday send-off UberEats order, and this is my 3rd year in a row doing so. In 2021, I had Edo on the last week before I turned 30. 2024, it was Boatyard at Smokey Joe's in Stamford, ordered on April 18. Last year, I did the Norwalk location of Elm Street Diner on April 24. If we want to take that into consideration, then that would be reason enough to sum my thoughts up together and get something down. So to send off age 34, say hello to Walrus Alley! If I'm being honest, I always wanted to have a barbecue right before my birthday of this year of all years. It only felt appropriate for 2026. Originally, I was going to have Wire Mill Saloon from Redding delivered using Yelp, but one of the items I'd ordered was out of stock, so that got canceled and I turned my sights here and ordered what I would have gotten from Redding. This was a half-rack of ribs, an order of Mac & Cheese, side of cornbread (this one came with coleslaw and pickles), and an a la mode chocolate bourbon pecan pie. The pecan pie was the only change since if I had gotten the Redding order, I would have had a key lime pie a la mode. I also put in some Alabama sauce because it does ribs a new flavor to play along with. I had everything over the next three days, hence why I am writing this review now. I will start by saying the ice cream did not make it without melting, but that's okay. I wasn't expecting it to since my driver did have to make a bunch of stops along the way, making my order take over an hour to deliver. No fault on the driver or restaurant there, and I ended up drinking the ice cream anyway, and it was still refreshing, so c'est la vie. The pecan pie it came with was actually really good. I found that it's better if you let that chill off a bit. Don't use plastic silverware for this one for the pie will break them, but delicious and sweet all the same. I'd love to have this in an in-person visit. In contrast, the cornbread should be warm when you eat that. It's buttered and soft, but it might be too dry if you try to eat it cold. The pickles are more of the spicy kind. I prefer sweet pickles, but I don't mind them being spicy either. The coleslaw I will say suffers the same fate that befell the one from Boatyard: it doesn't taste like true coleslaw. They should take a bit of inspiration from the Smokies (think Eastern Tennessee or Western NC) to learn how it should be done. It's lacking that mayonnaise component that truly makes it coleslaw. If they added that, then we might be talking! I decided to leave the ribs and Mac & cheese for last in the review because they do provide reheating instructions for those who order take-out such as myself. The Mac & cheese was actually eaten very late on the first night. The instructions given for Mac & cheese were spot-on, baking at 375 for 10 minutes before I dug in. It was some damn good Mac & cheese. Cheesy, love the breadcrumbs, and very satisfying overall. The ribs were the last to be finished. I will say I did also follow the instructions for the ribs as they were written; however, unlike the Mac & cheese, the ribs were still cold in the middle after 20 minutes in 375. You need the microwave to finish the job here. The ribs themselves were good. They weren't the best ribs I've ever eaten, but they were tender, the BBQ sauce was tasty, and the meat fell right off the bone. I will say that for this meal it needs a healthy amount of Alabama sauce all on it to really elevate it, but other than my experience reheating them this was my only criticism. Overall, a worthy BBQ meal. I'd still pick Hindsight BBQ over this if faced with deciding which CT BBQ to go with, but this will get the job done and then some if you need good BBQ. I'd love to come in-person one night and experience this place firsthand.
