My husband and I originally had dinner reservations for Monkeypod at Whaler's Village, but decided to just visit during happy hour since we weren't in the mood for a big dinner. We arrived around 4:45 (happy hour is 3-5:30pm) and the place was packed. Lucky for us, there were two seats available at the bar, so we bellied up! I have to start with the mai tais...they're like nothing else, the honey-lilikoi foam on top (in addition to its unique ingredients) made it something to write home about...and of course take photos of! We also sipped on the No Ka Oi yummy cocktails made with Ocean vodka (also rescind those) and my husband also had a couple of the craft beers op tap. For a light dinner, we shared the Kalua pork and pineapple pizza and the ahi tacos. Both were delicious! I recommend stopping by here in you're looking for amazing cocktails and food, and just jump in for the happy hour if you're not super hungry or want to take up too much of your time at a dinner. I was a having a tough time deciding between 2 and 3 stars but ultimately decided to go with 2 stars. The service was great and our server was very accommodating to our questions about the menu and entrees. The place it self is very cool but beware of birds walking around and landing on the tables. However the food was very meh. It was good but not great. It was just nothing special. The menu was also very misleading and did not show all information. Overall it was fine and I would have given it 3 stars if it weren't for the horribly expensive prices. The food for not being great was very overpriced and even $8 FOR MASHED POTATOES. We walked in and had a reservation for 9:15 and it wasn't ready yet. We had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated. It was pretty crowded/loud- not an amazing atmosphere if you're looking for an intimate dinner! Our waitress unfortunately wasn't super pleasant or nice. Barely spoke to us and was eager for us to leave. The mai Thai was great (as expected!) but we paid $25 for a fish sandwich with no sides- that ended up being very small. Mokeypod is one of the big restaurants and Whalers Village and always seems to have a line for dinner. They weren't taking reservations when we came. We had to wait in line to get our name on the list and then had to wait about 30 more minutes to be called. The dining area is set back a bit from the beach, but it still has great ocean views. Their menu has a good drink menu and lots of specialty cocktails. For food, they serve a variety of seafood dishes, sandwiches, tacos, and pupus. I ordered the poke tacos and that came with three small wonton taco shells filled with poke. It's intended to be an appetizer, so it doesn't include sides. We also ordered the grilled mahi mahi sandwich and it was served with fries. The mahi mahi filet in the sandwich was good, but it was served on a large sesame brioche bun that overpowered the whole sandwich. From the moment our party sat down at the table Matthew was friendly, attentive and very knowledgeable about the menu. We have a person in our group that has a gluten allergy. He was even providing recommendations and alternatives for us. Our drinks never had the chance to empty as he was always anticipating our needs. After eating here last night I have to agree with the other reviewers who said this place was touristy and over-hyped. There was nothing "wrong" with the food or anything, it was just very okay. We tried to get reservations but couldn't, so we decided to walk by and see if we could walk-in. To our surprise, they did have a table for 5 ready and waiting so we were able to be seated right away! We started with garlic truffle fries and pumpkin raviolis for appetizers and these were the best dishes of the night, so maybe next time just drinks and apps, yeah? For mains, we had the fish tacos (gluten free), the Banh Mi burger, and two of the pizzas- Kalua pork & pineapple and the Proletariat pizzas. My husband really liked the BanhMi burger but the rest of us felt like the dishes were just okay. The kalua pork pizza came with a macadamia nut pesto that was just weird and I thought the flavor of the pork wasn't great either. I came in with low expectations because there is something about these high priced restaurants in this shopping area that create pretty low quality meals in hopes the view will make up for it. We weren't able to get reservations here as I don't think they take them. We were staying near by so ended up at Whalers Village a few times and every night the line here looked long. We decided to give it a shot on our last night after we got off a sunset cruise around 6:30pm that docked at the beach in front of Whalers Village. Again, the line was long and we didn't have high hopes since it was prime dinner time, but it moved quickly and we actually were surprised that we got seated at the bar right away! The bartender was really nice and had a lot of good suggestions. We knew we had to try the mai tai, which was excellent. Food was good as well, be warned that the sauce on the fish tacos is spicy. I don't mind spicy, but this was really spicy. I'm glad the bartender warned me and told me I should order the sauce on the side just in case! Overall, great place for a drink and dinner. We ate lunch at Monkey pod after hearing lot of recommendations. We really enjoyed the food at Monkey pod and the drinks. For lunch we had pizza and they made it with only olives and tomatoes as requested by our daughter. The pizza was delicious, love thin crust pizza. We also had the kale and mushroom gnocchi that was also very delicious. For drinks I had the Mai Tai, the signature Maui drink, my husband had the mango beer and our daughter had the mix fresh juice ( passion fruit, orange and pineapple ). We have tried this place twice now and both times our service has been sub par and the food is just okay. We had high expectations since we are big fans of Merriman's. This time we went, we were sat after an hour wait. Once sat we were totally ignored for at least 20 minutes. No one brought us water or even acknowledged us. I finally pulled a waitress aside and asked her if she could get our server. I let her know we had been seated for 20 plus minutes and no one even brought us water. She didn't know who was serving the table so she had to go find the waitress. The waitress was apologetic and said she didn't even see us, but she served the two tables next to us so that didn't make sense. The service improved after this initial interaction. The margarita pizza is nothing special and truthfully I have had way better. The fish tacos were good but spicier than expected. I had the Moscow mule and all I tasted was ginger. Sadly, I sent it back. The waitress did explain that they make their own ginger beer so it tends to be a stronger ginger taste. The mai tai was good. Finally, live music was a plus and made the experience worthwhile. After 2 visits here all 5 of us agree we probably won't come back but it seems many others like the spot so I still encourage others to give it a try. read more

We really enjoyed our dinner at Monkeypod! The margaritas were pretty good (and on the happy hour menu). We started with the lobster deviled eggs which were unique and tasty. We then had the white truffle pizza which was just OK (kind of burnt and super thin). Next we had the burger which was pretty good. Lastly we had the chocolate mousse dessert which was light and refreshing. The service was decent. They made us mudslides which were not on the menu but they turned out great- kudos to the bartender! The fresh island fish sandwich was on the verge of amazing. Garlic truffle oil fries were good, but could use more truffles!! The sauces that comes with them were the best part. The pork on the kalua pork pineapple pizza was great, but the pizza itself was relatively plain. Pretty expensive, but you can't find much that's not here, anyway! We decided to venture off a bit and not only did I miss a text to let me know that our table was ready, but a phone call as well. What restaurant calls nowadays to let you know if you're still coming? Usually they'll just go down the list to the next guest. I'm so glad they didn't! For starters we had the truffle fries, paired with house made ketchup.(20 different herbs and spices!) I got the catch of the day, Mahi Mahi, and my girlfriend ordered a nicely medium well cooked steak on a bed of jalapeño mashed potatoes. We were seated after a 5-minute wait and the service was fast and friendly. Bathrooms were clean. Kids ordered a cheese pizza from the kids menu. My son liked it but my daughter did not. It has a lot of spicy Parmesan so it's a bit of an adult flavor. The cheese has been mixed and grated ahead of time so there's no way to remove the Parmesan. The only option was to get a pizza with just mozzarella pieces sprinkled throughout but my daughter would not have been a fan of that either. Instead she got the Mahi Mahi with broccoli and rice. I had the ahi tuna which was about $50. It was good but pricey. Not sure if it's worth that price tag. Overall I would say the food was a bit too salty for me. The kids mahi Mahi, the kids cheese pizza, and my meal. Everything was a tad too salty. Still edible and I did enjoy it but could have used less salt. read more

Monkeypod came highly recommended and I wasn't sure why until we were seated. Placed a reservation just to be safe, smart call since they were slammed. Seated with an epic view of the beach. Great interior design, incredible attention to detail from menu, to tables. Live music was a nice touch. Our server, Luke was awesome. He took the time to explain the concept, the food and it was refreshing. He definitely made the stop for food more of an experience. Offered a few great recommendations based on what we were looking for also. When it came to food, I was impressed with the appetizers, entrees and drinks alike. While sadly I don't have photos of all our finds, I can tell you based on my experience it looked like there wasn't anything I wouldn't recommend. Great find. read more

My first visit to Maui we fell in love with monkey pod and return every visit however this was the first we went to this location. The area is super busy but the wait wasn't long and there's plenty of shops to kill time if you do have a little wait or even better the beach is right there! For indoor dining you needed to show proof of vaccination and the seating was spaced out well so it felt really safe. We tried the fish and chips but honestly the bulgogi tacos are the best! The jalapeños are spicy so be aware! Otherwise remove them and the they are perfect! And obviously the Mai tai is delicious however with me being pregnant I wasn't able to enjoy it this visit but the virgin pina colada was also delicious!
