Apparently, quite a bit has changed with this place over the years. I've been going here for the last year, as it's down the street from my office. They serve Lighthouse Coffee now (which is absurdly good!), and the service is phenomenal. Always the same two baristas, who are super sweet, very friendly, and always make my drink with a smile - and make it perfectly. It's gotten to the point where I simply walk in and they start making my usual. Ahh, perfection. Monkey Grind has a great system where you can pre-pay your account, then just give your account number when you walk in. Saves them the hassle of continuous card fees for the under $5 transactions, lets you walk in without your wallet. Love it. read more

Good coffee, good sandwiches, & good baristas. Period. Ok, I have more to say. First of all, two baristas I've met are very nice and easy to talk to. Their sandwiches...mmm, YUM! Especially, their salami panini is so delicious and their lunch special is only $6 which comes with one panini, chips, and soda. What a great deal. I live nearby and have been in here a number of times, perhaps five. I want to love this place, but usually there was a little something that didn't sit right with me from the staff. I will admit to occasionally feeling a under-welcomed when many (or even one) regular was lounging around (nearly all conversation was directed toward them) and, on some level, I get that, but if treated well, I could be the next regular, you just never know. Anyway, the one thing that I can't dispute is that they make a fine mocha, which is my go-to at any new coffee shop. I got a grande/16oz today and it set me back $5.02, not including tip. This puts Monkey Grind Espresso Bar toward the more spendy group of places I like to visit but the space itself is comfortable, welcoming and engaging enough. It wasn't busy this afternoon; a man sipped his drink, a lady and her chocolate lab worked on a laptop at one of the tables. If I had brought my own MacBook (and dog!), I could see myself staying for a bit on the right afternoon. Anyway, that said, the barista today was friendly enough, not conversational by any means but also not intrusive. Good visit, great coffee. I'll try it again soon because I really do want it to be my favorite spot in the neighborhood. That parking though ... good luck finding a space during morning hours. They used to offer parking in the nearby apartment/condo garage but it doesn't seem like that's an option anymore? I hope I'm wrong. read more

Happened to be in Greenwood for a play and across this cozy cafe. Inside its very clean and inviting. Staff is super friendly and sweet. I tried out a house made berry and superpower green powder smoothie at the staffs recommendation based on my likes. It was really excellent! I really appreciate that inviting and hospitable attitude in cafes. Its a lost art on the Eastside, so it was a pleasant surprise when coming here on a whim. After recently moving to Greenwood, I couldn't be happier to find this amazing little gem of a coffee shop so close by. Monkey Grind is the epitome of neighborhood cafes with locally-made products and a healthy mix of regulars. Everyone there has been incredibly friendly, even to dogs (which made my pup's day). The coffee alone is a reason to return, as each cup I've purchased from them has been delicious. And, with Mighty-O donuts in their pastry case, it's impossible to leave disappointed! read more

The coffee and tea here are both really good. I've eaten lunch here a few times and was really impressed at first, but it seemed with each visit the sandwiches got worse and worse. Last time I ordered one it was swimming in tons of greasy cheese, pretty gross. If you come here on a weekend expecting lunch, plan to wait a really long time because they seem to only have one person working and they have to prioritize all the people coming in for drinks over making sandwiches. I've been in several times to study over tea and had to leave every time because the baristas like to shriek with laughter and yell back and forth while joking with customers. I know they aren't obligated to provide a nice reading environment or anything but I think this is worth mentioning in case someone reading this is looking for that kind of thing. Last time I went it, the barista working decided to take her break by sitting outside directly against the only door to the coffee shop. She was sitting there on her phone while I was trying to leave and I couldn't get the door open because she was leaning against it. This is one of my favorite neighborhood espresso bars! I'm very spoiled with many coffee shops within walking distance, and while they are all great, this one holds a special place in my heart. Ok, so I live nearby. It's very convenient. The owners and baristas are very sweet and helpful. They remember details I tell them the last time I was in and I wouldn't say I'm in there everyday. The coffee is excellent and I love that they carry some gluten-free options from local bakeries. I'm also a full-time student so it's a great place to study as well. read more

I can't agree with Steph B more. Same issue for me. I went somewhat out of my way to get latte here. Parking was hell. Ordered a latte, and presented the Entertainment book coupon and was told that they do not accept the coupon. Mind you, this is the ONLY Monkey Grind in Seattle. What an utter waste of time and gas. She wasn't willing to negotiate anything, so I left the shop in dismay. Most etsablishments would have gone ahead with the discount, especially since the latte had already been made. Guess they prefer WASTE over good customer service. I will tell as many people as possible NOT TO GO THERE! read more

Fair trade, shade grown coffee that is brewed up well and delivered by friendly folks makes this a place worth going, but beware - if you are creeped out, unnerved or otherwise put off by monkey images, entering here will put you face to face with your fears. It's like Maury Povich for monkey phobes: pure sadism. Fortunately I really like monkies, all cute seeming like weird little humans that are really good at climbing trees, so I think it's fun to go in there. read more

This place is great. I stop by at least 2-3 times a week. I wouldn't say I'm a coffee "connoisseur", but they pull good shots for the americanos I normally order. The lunch sandwiches are delicious, especially when grilled and they have an all-natural locally-made granola bar that's great to snack on throughout the day. The music was a bit loud and there were hardly any customers. I felt like I had to talk quietly so I did not disturb the barista. I asked for light room in the americano I ordered, but was given over two inches. I had the barista top of the drink and she handed me a glass of hot water to do it myself. I work across the street and this is the only place I can run to grab some food on my break. A toasted sandwich takes 20-30mins each to make and the coffee isn't that great, they don't even understand what two shots over ice means half the time.. Once i ordered a yogurt and asked for strawberry flavor and the barista replied "you said strawberry like i was suppose to know that already" WTF!! no manners, snooty, and rude. The girls that work here could be a lot friendlier, the blonde one is sweet but the others are stupid, always confused, and could work on hygiene. I tried this place today, and I have to say that I was impressed for the most part. The cashier was friendly and bubbly, but the Barista had a really negative attitude. She made my drink then went on about her day, not even bothering to put whip cream on it when I told the Cashier that's what I wanted. I asked her to put whip cream on it and she seemed really bothered by me even asking, like it was difficult for her to or just an inconvenience to help her customers. I don't think she even looked up once or even smiled, she didn't look like a happy person. I left with drink in hand, and I have to say that coffee was actually pretty good! The whipped cream tasted very plain though, and I did not like that but the coffee itself was good and the place is set up very cute and welcoming. read more

Typical hip café. Nothing extraordinary that stood out when I went there. But nothing bad either.

Disappointed with both my drink and the service:/ I ordered the Morning Glory Chai. It was super spicy and the barista put way too much cinnamon and nutmeg on top for my liking. I Tried to salvage the taste by adding sugar but still no good; ended up drinking 3/4 and dumping the rest out :( As far as the service goes, my husband and I walked up to the counter and he ordered first, before I could even tell the lady taking our order what I wanted she gave us the total? I felt that was kind of strange- so I had to interrupt her and say- so sorry I am going to order too (as if that wasn't already clear?). Some regulars came in and although our orders were clearly ahead of theirs, the ladies behind the bar immediately put our order on hold to accommodate the regulars. Just thought it was a little rude. I'm sure these ladies are super nice and probably didn't think about the image/ "vibe" they are projecting- but I have to give this a dissatisfied 2 stars for both beverage and service. read more

We live in the apartments nearby, and love this coffee shop. The staff is very friendly, and the atmosphere is cozy. We go in all the time, and they always know what our order will be. They really like being a part of the Greenwood community, and host music events and have local art for sale. They also get soups in from a local restaurant as well. They are also dog friendly, and have a treat jar if you walk in with your pet. read more
