Stopped by in the morning on a Friday. The customer service was amazing. The lady running the establishment made us feel right at home. We enjoyed a cinnamon roll which had the perfect balance of sweetness. The Mexican mocha was delish, I got lighter cayenne but you can still taste the flavor. Dog treats available for pups. Visiting my daughter, who just moved to Greenwood area, and stopped in for a coffee-and. The coffee with a shot was amazing - dare say the best in town - as were the locally sourced pastries. I sat down at a table and enjoyed both while I read a book and eavesdropped. The owner seems to know everyone who comes in, engaging with each one warmly and thoughtfully. Great atmosphere, cozy, and friendly. Every time I swing by I am always welcomed with absolute candor. The pastries are delicious, their menu looks and smells delicious (haven't tried it yet), but the smoothies are out of this world. Their 'Power to the People' smoothie is what gets me out of bed in the morning on my days off. I'll take my dog for a big walk and we'll take a breather here and enjoy the music and coffee. The cafe has a real neighborhood focus, the demographics are diverse. The people that come here chat and enjoy themselves, noone is ever whispering and it's never too loud. The staff knows all the regulars and are constantly communicating with their patrons. The walls are covered in local artistry. Love this place! I typically walk here after work with my dogs. When you walk in, you get this "underground" feel of the place. I personally really like it and it feels very Seattle like. I always get an caffè americano with hazelnut. I know it's not too adventurous but americanos are really good here. They don't taste too watered down and they add just enough hazelnut syrup. I like the seating arrangement within this place. Near the food and where they serve all the drinks is a sofa area. There are tables along with windows where most of the customers sit to enjoy their coffee while surfing on the web, doing homework, real work, etc. They have a couple tables outside and is usually where I like to sit when it's really sunny out. I had my car detailed recently so I found myself in the Greenwood neighbourhood with time to kill... a LOT of time, in fact. Armed with my laptop, I was going to walk to a nearby coffeehouse. The guys at the shop suggested this place instead AND gave me a ride up the hill. When I arrived, there were two baristas on duty but one left shortly into my visit. People stopped in and left with their drinks. For a couple of hours, I had the place to myself as I leisurely enjoyed my lunch and caught up on emails. I didn't find my drink bitter, in fact it was rather enjoyable. The music was a good volume and I chatted as the barista cleaned the dining area and behind the counter. Both baristas were super friendly and allowed me to keep my tab open while I waited there instead of running through two charges when one left. read more

Love the coffee, food and atmosphere at monkey grind! It's so cozy, colorful and I've always had positive interactions while there. I love that they can open up the big window on sunny days. Finally after about a year of living only 1 block up from here, we started going there right before the ownership change. We have gotten to know the new owner Patty very well- she is so nice and keeps the place and everything so delightful. I've always loved the monkey theme, especially all the pictures of where their mascot has visited around the world and famous people he's met. They are great and hilarious pics. The coffee is spectacular and reasonably priced too. I used to get Charbucks coffee as I used to work there and was hooked on it but once I discovered this gem, I will never go back to the big corporate dump. Even though we've moved we make it a special trip every weekend to stop by and will go get my beans there. read more

Okay so this is a cute place. Friendly staff and nice atmosphere, but I had the unfortunate experience of a hair in my food!!!! The gal who was working did not have her hair up( a food service no). I explained that I had come across a hair in my tiny( but over $9) breakfast burrito. I was able to get a new one with no charge, but she seemed in no rush to replace it and kept her hair down. More like 3.5 stars! I came here after I ran a loop around Mercer Island. I was rushing to my bike maintenance class at 1PM. Therefore, I parked by my friend's house and walked over here. This shop is right next to where the bike maintenance class (Real Rehab). I was super hungry. Then, I walked in. Parking here is actually not a big issue. Besides, most people probably won't drive in the area. Bus, walk, or even bike would be more convenient. However, street parking is all in the residential streets. It's a nice shop, very bright and clean. However, there's one lady who was helping. I felt it was a bit short of staff. Don't get me wrong! She was very nice and friendly. But, I was really hungry!! I ordered a piece of hearty bread, a cheese and egg sandwich and a cup of hot chocolate. But, there's a backlog for orders. I waited for my food to be sent in my mouth for approximately 20 mins or so. I really enjoy every bite of everything. I worked here back in the olden days, before ownership changed. I kind of went into avoidance mode after that, but went back today because I was in the neighborhood and wanted to see how things had changed since I spent half of my life there so many summers ago. Not too impressed, to be honest. I really had a hankering for one of the Little Rae's scones they used to serve. But not only were there no scones, there were no pastries whatsoever. The only breakfast options they had were the egg muffin sandwiches--delicious, yes, but not what I was in the mood for. I guess they also had those store-bought breakfast cookies, but I don't go to a coffee shop to buy something I could get at Safeway down the street for cheaper. Which reminds me: the other food options they had were little bags of pretzels and one package of Cup o' Noodles. Random! Anyway, I don't know quite what to make of Monkey Grind anymore. They've made it into a beer/wine place, which is cool, but every time I drive by during the 'witching hours' they're closed. The owner is very friendly, though, and seems to have a good relationship with her customers. They still serve Tony's Coffee which is really good shade-grown fair trade stuff, and have yummy specialty drinks--you *have* to try the Mocha Bianca (if they still serve it!). Maybe it's because I have too many memories of sweating behind the counter and coming home smelling like burnt panini grill, but I don't think I'd rush to go back here again. read more

The place was completely empty and I asked a couple of questions and she acted like I was ruining her day. This place used be 4-5 stars easily. Although the old barista was really slow, the drinks were always delicious, the service impeccable. Since the new owner took over, it's gone down hill. The owner is abnoxious, loud, and rude. When I first met her, she badmouthed the old owners, saying that, "You probably liked Rose if you didn't mind getting your coffee the next day." Then when I said how glad I was that they were still using Tony's coffee, she told me she didn't like it, she'd like to switch to another brand. Nothing but negativity the entire time. Too, she has some young girl working there (who I think is possibly her daughter), who doesn't even greet the customers when taking their orders. Just stares at them, like she's on some serious drugs or something. It's really too bad, because Monkey Grind used to be such a great place. Cozy, friendly, with good coffee. This is a great little neighborhood coffee joint with free WiFi. Love the owner Patty. I love her East Coast attitude and she makes you feel right at home for a real conversation. I guess I'm a Johnny-come-lately to Monkey Grind Espresso since I never went there before the ownership changed, so I don't have anything to compare it to. But I do know they no longer serve beer/wine. Sorry. And I could've really used a nice cold one this afternoon. Otherwise, it's a great little place. I will start by saying that I go to the Monkey Grind once or twice a week so even though I am only giving them three stars I do keep coming back. At a very basic level it is that it is about a 15 minute walk from my house which makes it a good round trip for a morning cup of Joe and to walk the dog. I have to agree with the reviewers that say the espresso is too bitter (I think because the shot wasn't pulled correctly). I normally start with a machiatto, but after ordering several and talking with the Barista's about about the bitterness they just don't seem to be able to pull a smooth shot. I have defaulted to ordering something like a Latte to cut the bitterness. One thing I will give them is that when they make their more foofy drinks they don't use as much of the flavored syrups as other places. It results in a more subtle flavor which in the end makes it more drinkable. Some cafe's just drowned the drink in syrup. The thing that keeps me coming back though are the breakfast sandwiches. There are several tasty pre-assembled combination's that then get heated up in a panini press. And presto! Breakfast goodness all warmed up. They have all sorts of fresh made sandwiches, soup and chili which I look forward to trying out. I really want to like this place but I just don't. My PT is right next door so I go sometimes for coffee and breakfast afterwards. Barista is super nice. All the times I've been there, they have been very friendly, nice, and service was quick. However, I find their espresso too bitter, their drip tastes like water, and their breakfast sandwiches....well McDonalds does better =( Really want to like this place but I just don't. read more

They don't whip things up at the speed of Starbucks, but it's worth the wait. Try the Greenwood Latte - it's cinnamon, apple, and caramel. I'm not much of a coffee drinker, but it was easily the best I've ever had. Great cookies too. read more

I've recently moved, so most of my usual study places are too far away to frequent anymore. I was directed here (by Yelp of course!) while on a hunt for a new spot. Right off the bat I was pleased with how quiet it was. All the tables run alongside the wall near outlets, and there is free wifi for those packing a laptop. The espresso here is also, in my opinion, amazing. The barista was quiet, but friendly enough. During my visit there was a wave of people coming in who all seemed to know each other. I'm guessing they may be residents in apartments above or next door. There looks to be a pretty decent sized menu that I didn't get to try, but definitely want to. Just smelling other customers orders was enough for me to mentally bookmark it! read more

I love this place. The girl I always seem to order from knows what a London Fog is, which is nice because, though not complicated, it is a pain to constantly explain "it's an Earl Gray latte. The Americano was a perfectly made drink. Creating a well made Americano is very difficult for most coffee shops for some reason, but Monkey Grind made it exactly how an iced Americano should taste. Plus the customer service was fantastic and the guy working there was very friendly. read more

I've been a few times, not as of late though. But when I was there, the owners were working and they were very friendly. Their the kind of people who try and get to know the customers and they are funny people. We were both from east coast and it made for some good and interesting conversation. I wish there beer was a bit cheaper, and if it was, I would probably be there more often instead of going to other places. If they wanted to do more business, they would have a flat screen and play some football on the weekend with some good beer specials. read more

We've been spending a lot of Saturday mornings writing at Monkey Grind. It's a convenient location, and since the loss of the Wayward Cafe, it's the best early Saturday morning spot in the area for our crazy little writer's group. I might be slightly obsessed with their bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwiches. I'm not a coffee drinker, so no commentary on that. I've been spoiled by Chocolati's amazing hot chocolate, so I find the hot chocolate at Monkey Grind so-so. But the tea selection is good! Service has always been quick enough (we do swarm them right at 8 a.m. most weekends) and friendly. About the only thing I'd really like is more outlets, but power strips fix that issue nicely! read more

Who can say no to the cute little monkey-gear theme they have going on? The sign, pictures on the walls, and even the pen you sign the debit slip with are all monkey themed. I seriously want a tee shirt as their logo is so awesome! Anyway, the coffee is amazing too. I love that they have a ton of flavors (clearly posted on the wall) and mixed coffee suggestions on the chalk board. I love that they offer a huge variety, and I've never had a flavor I didn't like. They also offer many food items, and though I haven't tried any of them, they smell good whenever I go in. I think they have a wine bar too. . . Service is fast, accurate, and friendly. They people go beyond polite and actually chat while they process payment and make the drinks. Seating is ample, and it would be a good place for a small meeting, hanging out, or surfing the web. I take away half a star b/c I usually prefer private lot for parking, but we ARE in a city. Apparently, quite a bit has changed with this place over the years. I've been going here for the last year, as it's down the street from my office. They serve Lighthouse Coffee now (which is absurdly good!), and the service is phenomenal. Always the same two baristas, who are super sweet, very friendly, and always make my drink with a smile - and make it perfectly. It's gotten to the point where I simply walk in and they start making my usual. Ahh, perfection. Monkey Grind has a great system where you can pre-pay your account, then just give your account number when you walk in. Saves them the hassle of continuous card fees for the under $5 transactions, lets you walk in without your wallet. Love it. read more
