We stopped by Mokafe on a cold day and it was almost entirely full. The owner was super friendly and explained some of their top items. I was a bit indecisive about which drink to get and he mentioned their house-made syrups. I was pleasantly surprised that they had just made a batch of lavender which they were testing out; I decided to give it a try. The Iced Yemeni Latte was super delicious! The Yemeni coffee beans were fresh, the lavender was delicious and came through in every sip, and it was super creamy. I kind of wish the default milk option wasn't whole milk as it makes the drink a lot denser. They do have other milk options that come at an up-charge. The Honeycomb Khaliat Alnahal was good but could've used more filling, in my opinion. The Pistachio Croissant was outrageously good! The owner also told us that all their pastries are made in-house. The pistachio tasted authentic without additives or that fake pistachio taste that you typically have in pastries. All in all, Mokafe was a good try and I would consider coming back. Mokafe Coffee House deserves all the praise that they've been getting lately as their coffee and refreshers really are fantastic. As I was fasting for the Holidays, I opted for a refresher rather than a coffee but I saw many people who opted for the latter instead. FWIW, Mokafe Coffee House is open very late anyways at least during Ramadan. The refresher I got was the strawberry mint (I believe it was mint)? and it was really nice. Best part is it wasn't 90% ice like other places' refreshers. I didn't have room for dessert from Mokafe as I had brought some knafeh from Al-Sham's nearby (and the owner was very kind and let us bring outside food) but the desserts do look fantastic. It's very beautiful here. There are plenty of seating and outlets for a wfh day. Theres free and fast wifi also. I really enjoyed the complimentary cucumber water and free sample during my visit. The honeycomb dessert was very delicious. It was warm and had the perfect amount of sweetness. I recommend that. I visited the Greenpoint location first but heard Astoria was the OG so of course, I had to make a visit. I absolutely love biscoff cookies so I got the Biscoff latte. The prices here were more expensive than the Greenpoint location. It was $7 here + tax compared to $6 there. To substitute almond milk is another $1. However, the guy barista that made my order was so sweet and gave me his recommendations despite the language barrier. Although it was definitely an expensive latte, he did make it so delicious. Maybe even better than the Greenpoint location, so I would definitely say it was worth the splurge. read more

Music was low and enjoyable while I had a pistachio croissant and a Yemen cold brew and did some work (free wifi). I love a croissant and they had at least four different flavors when I visited. Ever since I've had the adani chai at Hadramout a year back (which was long overdue because I've been meaning to try it for a few years) , I had to try it at other spots and see how close they got it to my first sip. Always chasing that first high, IYKYK. Nonetheless , we stepped in and the art deco vibe to the cafe interior was on point, populated with patrons on their laptops to add to the background aesthetic. They had a decent pastry display case and their iconic bubble cake looking dessert, shaped like a pizza pie sliced up into triangles of sweetness (thanks to the honey drizzle). But let's just skip all the fluff and get to the star of the show, the chai. Was it that similar flavor? Oh yeah! Did the tea have body ? OH YEAH! Was it satisfying ? * kool aid man breaking through the wall OH YEAH !! Look Yemeni chai/ coffee/ tea chai/ chai tea/ whatever you wanna call it , is here to stay. And mah fellow pakis, (derogatory term in UK, endearing word in the U.S.) we need to up our own chai game or as the Emirates call it "KARAK" probably Arabic for "CRACK" chai. It definitely tastes different cooked in big pots compared to you making it all on your own. Just not the same. Such a gem! Aesthetically it is very cute (and clean), plus there are a LOT of places to sit. Price wise, we spent around $14 for two cappuccinos and a pastry. The drinks are tasty and you have the option to try coffee from Yemen or Guatemala. The cakes slices are yummy (but a bit too sweet, so be warned). And, the best part is that they are open until late (around 2am-ish). If you're a night owl and looking for a coffee fix this is the perfect spot. It also seems like it's a lovely spot to study at--however, I've been twice and it gets pretty crowded around 10pm. Parking is not the best as it's a pretty popular area! I love this location. I have gone to the Paterson location twice expecting the same vibe and service I get at the Steinway location and it was not the same at all. Mokafe on Steinway is the best! They are always smiling. And the Shay 'Adeni is always on point! I was excited to try this new Yemeni coffee shop in Astoria. I had the honey cinnamon latte, a mocha, and a pastry. The latte and the pastry (triangle shaped with honey on top) were very good, but the mocha tasted like hot chocolate from a packet. The drinks were steep at $8 a piece; two lattes and a pastry for over $22 is a lot even for this area, so likely won't be frequenting often especially since the coffees seem to be a hit or mess. The decor and seating area are beautiful and it's a pleasant place to hang out. I would also recommend incorporating more traditional light music in the background instead of the latest radio hits. read more
