I went for first time bc been wanting to check this new place out. I was heading to my cousins and stopped by to get some pastries for them as well as myself and some coffee. I got mocha. Picked up a few pastries but didn't get to try all yet as well as gave some away but the ones I had were pretty good and they are pretty loaded and decent size as well as prices. I got quite a few so was surprised everything wasn't too pricey. I got almond, pistachio, chocolate, plain croissants as well as ham & cheese. Definitely heading back another time. I'm a local for Forest Hills native and I also do enjoy a coffee almost every single day so I was really excited about this place. I've since it opened given it three separate opportunities to redeem itself, but every single time I get coffee from here I'm extremely disappointed. it's burnt way too hot and just altogether gross tasting. Great location so it's pretty sad that the coffee is just way below average. Actually will never get caught from here again. I've tried to like it so many times- four actually. Now that I think of it, even the iced coffee was shitty, and that's hard to mess up. I think they need to calibrate their espresso machine or simply learn how to make espresso- one of the two. In case it's some of the worst espresso I've had in this neighborhood. Go to the French place on Austin Street. They do it right. read more

Came a month ago to try again....My husband ordered an iced latte. Sadly it was still as bad as the first few times I visited. Really bummed as I genuinely love that there's a cafe here but I think I will need to buy a bottled beverage to come back and come for the ambiance and not the quality of coffee. Came here twice to try the Sea Salt Vanilla Latte, iced and hot versions. The spring menu did not mention it has cinnamon but the hot Sea Salt Vanilla Latte I got did have cinnamon, enough so that I could not taste sea salt and the cinnamon overpowers the vanilla taste. However there was no cinnamon in the iced version of the drink when I bought it last time. When I asked the worker about the hot drink, she said it is supposed to have cinnamon (like the Golden Bloom Latte that has it explicitly stated on the menu) and sorry. It happened towards the end of a Saturday afternoon rush, and the workers seemed overwhelmed. It also seemed like the receipts were not printing and all orders had to be handwritten, probably contributing to the crowding of customers. I also tried the spinach and feta croissant as well on my first visit and it was tasty. They are able to heat it up for you. There is a single bathroom for customers to use. They only have a small menu up front where the cash register is, so when there is a line, you cannot figure out what you want until you get up there in front to order. The staff seemed to have a hint of annoyance for both times I visited, although they seemed friendly with some other people, probably regulars. Maybe it was annoyance that we paid with cash and coins the first time, and second time because they were overwhelmed with how busy it was. Small cute little coffee shop right before metropolitan avenue. Very aesthetically pleasing. I ordered a very berry hibiscus, there was nothing special about it. Would've probably tasted the same if I would've brewed hibiscus at home. I also got a feta cheese spinach croissant. The croissant was actually really good. I would definitely buy it again. I would go back if I drive by and want a coffee, or craving a good croissant. read more

I've visited twice on weekend afternoons and The Hill's Cafe is a very welcome addition to the neighborhood. The decor is really chic, comfortable and clean and the baristas have been friendly on both of my visits. It's really nice to have a coffee shop with a relaxing and welcoming vibe. On my first visit my husband and I got the cookie butter latte (addicting!), and chocolate chip cookie and an oatmeal raisin cookie that were both really good. On my second visit I got an iced coffee and a salted caramel donut. The donut was a little sweet for my taste so I would try the lemon next time. Looking forward to visiting again soon! read more

It was a nice day and decided to take a walk to try out a new cafe. The service was great, our barista was super nice. That being said, I don't know if it is because they are new, but they seemed to be out of a lot of things. We asked for a matcha latte and they said they didn't have any matcha. We asked for an iced tea and they said it would take about 20 minutes to make. Finally asked for an iced coffee, and somehow got charged for a cold brew. We also got the cinnamon roll, and it was average. The bread was hard and it was a bit bland. Overall, chalking a bunch of this up to growing pains and hoping that they can improve! read more

Lovely little cafe! Came here for a quick caffeine pick me up and was greeted with friendly smiles and quick service. Their cold brew coffee (Large cup $5.5p) was (in hubby's words) a proper one: perfectly strong, but not bitter. I also nabbed one of their red velvet donuts ($3.50), a dense cake donut filled with sweet creme. Plenty of seating inside, spacious. There are a few steps at the front, so keep that in mind if you have a stroller. Tip: pay in cash and get a 4% discount. Great small business! read more

I am sitting here with my caramel latte (recommended) and chocolate croissant (recommended), reading a collection of stories by Upike (recommended). The light coming through the big front windows is just right and the view out is relaxing. A clean, well-lighted place. My third visit, and each time was worth the trip from Kew Gardens. Seems to draw mostly a young crowd, which I like (I am in my eighth decade). Coffee is good, pastries better than many other cafes, and staff keeps the right balance of friendliness and letting me be. Music is kept low, which I appreciate. (I guess I will never find a cafe that has WQXR on, alas) Atmosphere, ambiance matter to me and they do all that right. I don't know what happened but the service today was horrible. I've been coming here quite regularly for the last month or so. I was so excited to share this place with my daughter. We ordered our coffees and were surprised they had no whole milk or cream, best they could do is 2%. OK, no big deal, I really like the fat in the coffee, but I can handle 2%. I ordered a donut and scone. The person helping me didn't give me the pastry at the time of paying so I assumed it would be brought out with the coffees, um no. When I went up to get the coffees, no pasty to be found. Figured, they needed a minute to plate them. After a few minutes of them not waiting on anyone, I went to the counter to ask where they were, the girl was going to ring up new pastries for me? What? I didn't get the ones I originally paid for. She blamed the other server for not getting them to me and was annoyed I asked for the items to be put on 2 separate plates, since you know it was for 2 people. SMH. This was so off-putting, I don't know if I will be back. Very disappointed to say the least. Oh, and I didn't realize this until we were in the car, they charged my daughter the credit card price even though she paid in cash. It wasn't much difference, but that was just wrong. read more

i'll have to try them again. the caramel latte i got tastes like straight up coffee. i usually order a latte from dunkin' donuts because it masks the coffee taste and is sweeter. maybe that's not how real lattes are but it just wasn't what i was expecting. it did wake me up though which i needed at this early hour. the pastries looked really good. read more

Three visits synthesis: I think the ambiance is very good and the aesthetics are on point. Really, the problem is pretty simple: the hot coffee and latte drinks are not very good and they are very expensive. The iced coffee I actually think is solid. To charge the premium they charge I think requires a rethinking of the coffee product. I am confident they can get there and the aesthetics point to an attention to detail which could be applied to coffee making. read more

I've been here three times this week because I desperately want a good cafe option in the neighborhood. The first time they were out of cold brew, got iced coffee instead and it was alright. The second time they had cold brew, but no hazelnut flavoring or pastries (at 8 AM!). Third time I tried the hot coffee and it was unbelievably bitter, undrinkable even after adding more milk. And the cup was constantly leaking. Really hope they can pull it together because it'd be a great spot to get breakfast and work if they could figure out how to make coffee and order enough supplies. read more

Exellent coffee shop on Ascan Avenue and around the corner from Metropolitan Ave. The coffee is strong and just plain delicious. The pastries are awesome and the staff is attentive and professional. John, the barista, is very friendly and accommodating. He gave me a sample of their espresso and it was magnificent. Interior is nice and spacious with several tables. Very clean and modern.
