This review is for wedding catering. TL;DR - food was AMAZING, would work with them again. One place to improve- communication after signing the contract/finalizing the menu. We worked with Rajeev for our wedding day lunch and dinner. We knew Moghul's reputation from other family members and we super excited to have them for our wedding. Rajeev was great at being flexible for food tastings, because my wife and I live in Washington, DC and had to travel to NJ for the tastings. In addition, my parents were traveling from CA, so I appreciated the flexibility for them as well. He was willing to work with our schedules to the best of his ability. During our tastings, Rajeev would suggest items - that was really helpful because he would suggest items we didn't think of. He also worked with us to create a totally new drink that we passed around during our wedding ceremony that people loved. Rajeev was extremely understanding of food restrictions - he made sure that nothing had eggs and the food that we specified no onion/garlic did not have any. Moghul provided clear signs for potential allergens for our events, which we asked for. Overall, the food was all super delicious and we got nothing but compliments from our guests. They raved about it! The reason why we are not giving 5 stars is because we had a lot of communication difficulties with Moghul. After our tastings, it took us a lot longer to finalize our menu than we hoped for because we wouldn't hear back in a timely fashion. We would leave messages and emails, but not hear back for sometimes a few days but oftentimes several weeks. We ran pretty close to the wedding week before finalizing our menu (probably less a month before) - note, most of the items had been finalized but one or two items were left open. Ultimately, it worked out and our guests loved the food. But, in the months before the wedding - my wife and I were frustrated that we wouldn't hear back or that our emails remained unacknowledged, and that we couldn't lock down our menu for lack of responsiveness. We would hire them again for the food, but hope that they take steps to improve their communication with clients. This could've been for lack of staffing because it was clear that Rajeev was handling so many clients. read more

Moghul, Thank you very much for giving me one of the greatest dining experiences I've ever had. It's very hard to find fine dining in Indian restaurants, but this really hit the spot. I came on Saturday night for my birthday dinner. It's now Tuesday, and I've been craving to go back since then. The decor and ambiance were both great. The feel of the restaurant was very royalty-like, as the name would suggest. Many Indian restaurants don't give you that fine dining edge, but Moghul definitely did. We were seated within 10 minutes on a very busy night. Complimentary papad and chutneys were served. Service was fantastic from the minute we walked in up until the minute we left. You can tell the staff were all dedicated to providing the best service possible. For food, we ordered: 1. Aloo Papdi Chaat: AMAZING -- It even had fresh pomegranate on it. Who does that?! :) 2. Vegetable Samosas- An appetitzer that i think included 4 samosas, and probably the freshest samosas I ever had. You could tell the ingredients were all fresh and the samosas had just been made. 3. Chicken Tikka Masala - Classic dish - -Very tasty! 4. Lamb Korma (Sorry can't remember the full name) - My first time trying it, and it was very good. When i first looked at it, it didn't seem appetizing, but I would definitely recommend trying this dish. It was very good. 5. Chicken Kebabs - Fantastic. I thought the kebabs would be higher in temperature, since the dish it came on is steaming and bubbling, but the taste of the kebabs was phenomenal, so no complaints from me here. 6. Rasmalai for dessert - Classic dish where you can't go wrong - delicious! 7. Regular Naan - Do I need to say more? Fresh and tasty I highly recommend this restaurant. Great for date night, family dinner, first date, business dinner, etc. Sure it will be full of families with their children, but I assure you that you will be so busy with eating, you won't really care who is around you. I wish i had taken pictures of my food, but everything was so good I didn't waste a moment to dig at it all. **Note: i don't thing this restaurant is halal, but if it is, I'd love for someone to let me know! If it's not, I'd love for that to be considered. My entire family would be your loyal patrons if that became a possibility. read more

Pathetic!!!! We went to the weekend buffet for 13.99 pp. Its a shame that this place positions itself a upscale dining with upscale prices with food of such bad quality. This restaurant used to be very good a few years ago but has deteriorated in quality over the past 2-3 years. The items in the buffet were tasteless and completely not coordinated with each other. Here is my brief summary Chat - Alu Tikki chat was the only saving grace. We had to fill ouselves with this as everything else was very bad. Dahi Vada's were dry and stale. Appetizers - Tadoori chicken was cold and dry Naan - There used to be a time when this place was known for its naans. The naans were thick, soggy and cold. BTW it was not like we went for the buffet right before it closed. It was 1 PM when we started eating Non-Veg Entres - Chicken Makhani and some kind of indo-chinese chicken. Both were tasteless Veg Entrees - The aloo gobi was to consistency of mashed potatoes. Achari paneer - horrible! They just mixed cheap Panchranga pickle and paneer Dessert - Gulab Jamun and fruit were the only options. We could feel granules of sugar in the Gulab Jamun syrup. Other items (not many more) were not even worth talking about. I am never going back to this place and drowning my hard-earned money. V unpleasant experience- I went on a Saturday night (over an hour before closing time) and asked for the wait time for a party of 4, only to be told by the hostess that 'the restaurant is busy and cannot accommodate you.'! She refused to provide a wait time and did not say the restaurant was closed to any more patrons.. Just that she would not accommodate us. With so many other options in the area, the management would be wise to train their staff on common courtesy and valuing potential customers. We really enjoyed our experience at Moghul. They started off by giving us plenty of papadum and we ordered some delicious mango lassis. Everything was absolutely fantastic! Very flavorful. I had the paneer Mogul which was fantastic. Plenty of paneer and was a delicious medium spice. My friend got the chicken vindaloo which she really enjoyed as well. The garlic naan had lots of flavor and a wonderful texture. Overall very pleased with the quality of the food, the atmosphere and the friendliness of the staff. My family and I have gone here for years and the food here is by far the best food in the tristate area. You must get the paneer tikla masala (dry) or the chicken tikka masala (dry). Both dishes are incredible. Although the food is wonderful other things need dire improvement. The restrooms need a very big upgrade. For a restaurant of its caliber to have rest rooms like that is just embarassing. The wait staff can be a bit more courteous and attentive. Some things you cannot improve however, the noise and traffic that comes from an indian crowd is unwieldy. read more

We had weekend buffet at Moghul today with friends. The place was very crowded at around 1:30pm in the afternoon but we had reservations. They seated us in this side-room between Mughal and Ming (an Indian-Chinese restaurant run by the same folks) which had the advantage of being quiter but made for a longer walk to the buffet. The service was prompt and attentive. Chaat appetizers were very tasty as was the naan and curries. Curry choice was limited. They had Baingan ka Bartha, a creamy Paneer curry, tandoori chicken, chicken tikka masala and manchurian chicken. Dessert was disappointing. They had a version of gajar halwa, but with moong dal, which was far from satisfying. Overall, the place has decent food and good service, but is very crowded especially with many children. read more

I went to Moghul with my friend. The place has a nice setup and plenty of room, but you don't feel cramped and the noise level isn't too loud that you have to yell. You can have a pleasant conversation across the table. The level of service is really good. I'm a picky eater, and I think the food is really good. I ordered the lamb vindaloo, and the waiter gave it to me extra spicy according to their secret code of spiciness. It was delicious. The spice stayed in my mouth and tingled in my throat after I finished eating. You know that perfect level of spice that is delicious and warming at the same time. I was very happy with the food that I received this time and the last time. Personally I've had the paneer moghul, chicken and lamb vindaloo, mango lassis, talapia appetizer, and dessert. All were delicious. I highly recommend this place to anyone who enjoys Indian food. read more

Had my daughters birthday here, and there was 12 of us. With beer, wine and dbl Glenlivet, came out at $50 per head. The tandoori fish was excellent, moist and flaky. Goat curry was well cooked and not gamy, falling off the bone. The left overs were enough to feed 4 for lunch next day. When in Edison, will go back. They could improve in waiters, specifically pour our wine when glass is close to empty, just a teaching moment, maybe we would order another bottle. read more

Food was ok, awkward buffet setup which overcrowded the dining room quickly. Service was a bit rude. We had a large party and they were rushing us to accommodate a reservation that was not due for another hour. Let me begin by saying that we know this place for the last 13 years and have visited it many times during this period. The good news is: during the initial 4-6 years, the food was palatable, service was good and the staff was friendly and proactive. And the bad news?? Well: quality of food has deteriorated measurably, good service is hard to come by and there is a distinct air of arrogance amongst the staff. We visited yesterday and the appetizer- vegetable pakoras were stale to say the least! Brought it to the attention of the server and he went ahead and brought back another platter saying the chef acknowledged it and the second platter was complimentary!! But here is the issue: the second platter had few pieces that were stale too (the veggies had gone bad - may be they were kept for a week or two?? So the chef is so ignorant of stale stuff and arrogant enough to send another platter with similar nonsense?? The Paneer Moghul and the bhindi masala were nothing to rave for and you could get a better tasting dish anywhere else in town! Now this is not the first time it's occurred-- I am forced to write this negative (but all true) note coz I felt I had to. And final note to the owners: it's not enough to post photo ops with yesteryear personalities at the entrance to portray how famous you are; the food quality is what keeps the place truly going .... and sadly- the latter has been ignored! Absolutely love this restaurant. It was recommended to me by a co-worker and I have gone back at least 5 times since. Each time, we ask for Melvin. He's a fantastic waiter who gives great recommendations and top notch service. We'll be going back tonight and asking for him again. We have not tried the weekend buffet, but have been told it's fantastic. Definitely recommend this restaurant to both lovers of Indian cuisine, as well as those who have never tried it. We were driving through New Jersey and accidentally missed our exit. Although tragic and very time consuming, we were blessed to have found this little gem of a restaurant in Edison. I thought the food was the best Indian food my taste bud has ever taste. Even better, was the service and I cannot speak highly of the manager who was very attentive and cheerful to say the least. That also goes for the rest of the staff that were very friendly and welcoming. We recommend this restaurant to anyone who happens to be lost or not. The lunch buffet experience at Moghul is excellent. Most importantly, it is consistent every time we visit, which is very frequently. The service is unparalleled compared to any other restaurant I've ever been to. Your glasses of water are constantly refilled, and all the waiters are so professional and efficient. I've never seen quite a team that has worked so well and effectively together We have been coming here for many years now, and the assortment during the weekend lunch buffet never disappoints. My favorites are the chicken tikka masala, paneer, and singapore noodles. The best part is, it never gets old because some dishes are varied from time to time, like the paneer, rice, and noodles. This has been the best indian restaurant I've ever been to, and once again the service is quite amazing. We have been here a few times and the service is excellent, however the only issue is we prefer the spicy recipes at Express. Also the chicken saag recipe here is very different than the express. It is very liquidy and tastes odd. The express version of saag chicken is thicker and more flavorful marinated chicken with the proper consistency and viscosity (feels weird to comment on this but it was super off). The naans and rotis (ramali and others) are hot, flakey and perfect. The biryani here is a miss too, but their best dish is always the lamb rogan dosh and chicken (not saag) in green dry rub marinade (forgot the name and do not see it on menu online), but it comes on a skillet plate. Parking is ample and it is next to the movies too. The complimentary appetizer is nice (papard) and again the service is excellent, attentive and very polite. Tip is already included at 18% as well, which is fine. Decor and plating is up to a good standard, and most of the time you do not need reservations. read more

If you want Indian food in the US, this is the place to be. The best compliment is that this place can beat some Indian restaurants in North India on taste. Somewhat expensive, but clearly you're getting quality. Avg dish is priced at $16 and there are cheaper options out there, depends what you want. I've done take outs most of the time and dined in once, Service wasn't that great hence only 4 stars. Food quality gets a 5. Way to go Chef!! read more

Was looking forward to dinner here but ended up very disappointed with the dishes that at leady we selected. The service was ok but still wont be coming back. The aloo papdi chaat had too much yoghurt, in the homestyle chicken you could taste the sauce and chicken separately, not the marinated and flavourful taste I was looking for. Lastly the Dum Aloo Kashmiri was too salty and the sauce bland. On a side note I have not remotely been able to find an equivalence of the mouthwatering indian food I get back home in London. read more

This is the best Indian food that I've had in America. From the appetizers to the naan, everything had a very authentic Indian taste. Dhai kebab and chicken 65 were very excellent. Malai kofta was the best I've had ever. Even the naan was so fresh and soft--much better than the doughy naan you get at other Indian places. Service was excellent as well. Servers came by regularly but not too frequently. They also give you a warm towel to clean your hands with prior to dining. Though I wish they brought towels again after the meal to clean your hands, I cannot complain about the service. I am an indian and I know what is quality Indian food. These guys are just cheating or fooling people in the name of Indian food. It's just a big name or big hype with low grade food. Yesterday I went with my wife and friends on Valentine's day 2014. We ordered lot of appetizer including Malai kebab for kids. It the kebab came in yellow in color without any malai...where as malai kebab is suppose to be whitish in color with malai.. We got the shrimp tandoor as an appetizer and it was DELICIOUS, but the chicken tikka masala was horrible it tasted like tomato paste. We asked for extra cream just to take that tomato taste away but it still wasn't good. And then on top of that the waiter charges the wrong amount.
