Food: 5/5 The food was delicious - hitting the right balance of flavor and spiciness. The fish is definitely the highlight and should be a must order. The crawfish is also packed with flavor. The garlic, umami taste is well worth the effort of peeling these little guys. Service: 5/5 Efficient and attentive. Our waters were refilled promptly and our used plates were also cleared. Ambiance: 4/5 It a casual, large dining room. Nothing noteworthy minus the huge screen showing Asian music videos. Its well appointed for family or small to larger dining parties. Our party of 5 fit comfortably in the booth but there are regular tables available. read more

Highly recommend for grilled fish! This spot fills up, but you can just join the waitlist and come back when it's your turn. The restaurant is very spacious and perfect for large groups and families. There's peanuts, fried broad beans, and sunflower seeds at the table for you to eat while waiting for the food. The Artic clams have a pepper sauce that is super addicting and comes with cucumbers underneath that add a refreshing crunch. We tried the buffalo fish in a spicy garlic base. The buffalo fish does have many small bones which they warn about, but the flesh is very more meaty than most fishes and I don't mind the bones. The spicy garlic base comes with tons of garlic and is the perfect amount of spice. We added the mung bean noodles, lotus root and enoki mushrooms. The portion for the add-ons are very generous! read more

It's been a while since we were last here. Hubs has been wanting to come back here, ever since. We got here and were immediately seated at a booth against the wall. We were given an iPad and ordered the following: Preserved eggs mixed with tofu - Hubs and Daughter loved this a lot, especially the century eggs. She said that she wished that the bowl was bigger. She was fighting us for it. LOL Grilled Stripe bass (2 lb) with Spicy tofu pudding flavor, luncheon meat, golden combination, black fungus, beancurd stick, mini sausage, instant noodles. Hubs said that he would've preferred the buffalo fish because he thought it tasted better. But, it was too many bones for Daughter and I, so he got the stripe bass instead. This was delicious! It was nice and spicy but not too spicy. Just the right amount. We also ordered white rice, but we only got a bowl and was hoping for more. They were generous with the instant noodle, though. It came in a small casserole pot. Hubs love this place. He loves the presentation of the fish with sides surrounding it in a big rectangular heated platter. There's this big wall of video going on with karaoke for those who are interested in singing. There was only one other table dining when we were there, so no one was singing during that time. Service was what you'd expect at a Chinese restaurant, quick and efficient. Will definitely to try other fish entrees when we get a chance! read more

Avoid Mala Space New Jersey -- really disappointing experience. We ordered crayfish, and at no point did the staff mention that the three-pound portion is dine-in only. So we ordered three pounds but were only served two. Only after we questioned it did they suddenly bring up this rule -- why wasn't this clearly explained upfront? This feels misleading. We then asked for a refund and to reorder for dine-in, which is a completely reasonable request. But the front desk staff, Ms. Tian, had a terrible attitude, spoke rudely, and outright refused to help us place a new order. Honestly, this was shocking: They failed to explain their own rules When an issue happened, they refused to fix it And even blocked us from ordering again Are customers not even allowed the basic right to order food? Poor service + zero transparency = bad experience. Definitely not coming back. read more

My family and I have come here a bunch of times, and we always love it! It's nice that there are complimentary nuts/snacks when you first get seated, and the ambiance is lively with the music videos playing on the back wall. Between the four of us, we usually get a 2lb fish with rice and a couple skewers plus a side dish. Typically we get the stripe bass, but this time we tried the buffalo fish. I absolutely love their spicy flavors for the fish, and we always get the golden combination for the veggie add-ins. Our favorite side dish is the hot oil clam (hot meaning spicy, the dish is actually cold), and the texture is always perfect! The only reason this review isn't a five star is just because the skewers are nothing special, and we've tried nearly all of them trying to find one we really loved. Highly recommend getting a spicy garlic fish! read more

Not my first rodeo here, but the person seating me was baffled that I was here to dine alone. She warned me thrice about the big portions. I really wanted this and did not have company that night and decided not to wait for another time. I got the barramundi spicy tofu pudding with the golden combination (potato, lotus root, enoki mushrooms and kelp) with a side of the BBQ eggplant. I've been here before and have the best things to say about the fish - usually 2 lb (or 4 lb) in a hot pot base with your toppings of choice. Rice is ordered after your fish appears (interesting that it's $1 at the table but double when ordered to go). Top notch fish and everything in it. The eggplant BBQ was delicious - grilled eggplant with a mix of garlic + spice rub. Perfect compliment. I dined by myself and took home plenty of food to go. The music is loud but who doesn't enjoy that! I'll be back again, hopefully with more people so I can try more stuff. read more

Food: we ordered the sea bass with chili oil. It was perfect amount for four people. The skewers were also tasty- I liked the beef and squid. The dumpling I wouldn't order again...they taste like the ones you can make at home from the frozen package. Interior: Plenty of seating area, but I can see it getting busy on a weekend. Service: they were quick to seat us and were at tentative on refilling our tea. They also offered to bag our jackets, so the jackets wouldn't absorb the spice scent, which was awesome. Also they provided bibs for each person to protect our clothing. read more

I drop by here once in a while; good place to go to with a few people (2-4). If any more, you will probably have to order something in addition to the 2 pound fish. The fish is great. This time I got the tomato broth with the sea bass since the big mouth bass they ran out of. I think people are sleeping on this flavor since it's so flavorful! The peanuts served as the appetizer are delicious and have a sweet tint to it. I'm not normally someone who cares about peanuts but it was that good. Service is very good. Provided us with a bag to put jackets in and sheets of plastic to put in front of our shirts. Also gave us new plates in the middle of the meal. read more

We used to love this place but we stopped going because they always sock you with a giant platter order requirement. They have the right to do this, but it doesn't make the meal worthwhile as far as price when there are so many other asian restaurants in the exact same shopping center. I wish more people would advocate against this manipulative business practice. Legal but highly unethical. read more

Food is tasty. We had the grilled sea bass with spicy tofu base (the fish was cooked to the perfectly), the grilled skewers were tender and flavor, and the cauliflower was perfectly flavored and crunchy, and the grape slushy tasted like fresh red grape. The fish is so good, so fresh and tasty in the different sauces. We got the spicy sauce the first time- too spicy for us so the second time we got the picked vegetables one. It was amazing. The skewers weren't as good the second time around, dry, not seasoned well, so that's a let down. But overall great place read more

Very authentic Sichuan cuisine. The restaurant was full with a 30 minute wait and I observed 100% of the patrons being from China. That should be a sign that this food is satisfactory for their palate, it's nothing like the greasy yuck you get from Chinese takeout. Some of the dishes are indistinguishable from what you get in Sichuan province. I am not sure but I think there is a sister restaurant in Mianyang. There are many items on the menu, such as pig brain and bullfrog, that may scare off people unfamiliar with Sichuan cuisine. It would be nice to have a menu for non Chinese that lists more familiar dishes described in English. Some sections of the menu are not even translated. However the servers were very helpful and patient with translation and recommendations. I would absolutely return here for the grilled fish. The price isn't bad either, 80 bucks and 3 of us were stuffed and had leftovers read more

Noted it was going to be a fun atmosphere the minute I walked in and saw a karaoke stage before me. Can you imagine the fun you would have either with your group or even joining a bunch of strangers belting out some of your favorite tunes? On to the food. They specialize in grilled fish in a sauce, where you pick what type of fish you want, the sauce and spice level, and some 3-4 additives to add to the steamed fish tray. The fish is 2 lbs and can be easily eaten by two people. They also have other sides giving you a very complete and satisfying meal. The wait staff are very accommodating and if you get stuck deciding, they are very knowledgeable and offer excellent recommendations based on your taste. I'll be honest I was a bit confused of what this place offered. It wasn't hot pot. But with a high rating I was curious. Pros: - You can put yourself on a waitlist. You can check your status and it lets you know how many parties are ahead of you. I loved this since it lets me walk around the area since Hmart is right next door. Once they text you when your table is ready, you must confirm and then they give you 5 min to arrive. Pretty smooth - Staff was very friendly especially Tina. Very helpful on what to decide since it was our first time there. - BYOB YESSS! - Plenty of parking - Complimentary starter (different kinds of nuts) and ending it with complimentary dessert (its like a gelatin (aka grass jelly) with I think it was evaporated milk) - If you spend $120 you can choose a flavored drink that comes in a dispenser. We got the mango it was good... it's sparkling water - Must try a fish. We had the salmon with the garlic sauce... broth was delicious Cons: - lots of vegetables that you must order with the fish I wasn't familiar with. I wanted Bok Choy and broccoli they didn't have it surprisingly - did not like the roasted squid at all. Seasoning wasn't good and it wasn't as tender. Presentation was horrible. - Try to sit in the middle or at the end if in a booth so the smoke from the sterno is not hitting you So you must try a fish it's what their known for. There's 3 steps: 1. Pick a fish (I'd like to visit again and try the bass.) 2. Pick a sauce (I really liked the garlic flavor) 3. Pick your vegetables (it was 6 of us and they recommended 4 to choose from) When the fish and veggies come to you, they ask you to wait for it to heat up.. it's like a sterno on steroids. Watch out for that smoke.. If you're sitting in a booth, don't sit in the inside because you'll need a shower to wash all that smell off of you lol. Salmon was good and they gave us 6 pieces! Perfect for us! Like I said I LOVED the garlic sauce. And the veggies we selected were: - Chinese cabbage - Asparagus lettuce (wasn't a fan) - Cauliflower (I liked a lot) - Kelp (supposedly this was Keto but not 100% sure it was actually good) My side faves were: -Chinese fried rice -Steamed dumplings Corn came in sticks, beef skewers and chicken they all were just ok. Looks like they have a karoke machine but didn't see anything happening on Friday night. Try it out! I'll be back! read more

What a GREAT find for authentic Sichuan spicy fish hotpot! TL;DR - It isn't a cheap eats, but you get what you pay for - good quality & tasty spicy fish. Read on for breakdown, what to order, and some tips to get the most out of this place! Wife and I visited after work one day and we were quite pleased with the quality, quantity, and the variety of food they offered, along with good service and very interesting & inviting interior. FOOD: 1. Lamb Skewer (APP, 4/5, $4.95) - We started off with the skewer and it was well-cooked, tasty, without much gaminess (well-covered w/ cumin & spice). Good palate-arouser 2. Roasted Oyster (APP, 5/5, $4.95) - LOVED this. It's ginormous (see pic)! But somehow, it was nutty, savory, and didn't lose flavor throughout its massive size. (I expected parts of it to be under seasoned - not the case!) The toasted topping/sauce on top was sweet & addictive. 3. Spicy Fish hotpot (MAIN, 5/5, $76.95) - Spicy Tofu Pudding Flavor Broth ($18) - w/ Sea Bass ($49.95) - 3 vegetables (Asparagus lettuce, Lotus roots, and Chinese cabbage, $9) The broth was excellent. It had all the right kick w/o being overwhelmingly spicy (my wife can't handle spice too well). Tofu pudding refers to silken tofu (like Korean soondoobu) in the broth. Sea bass was fresh and offered good amount of meat since it was the whole fish. Subtle and chewy at different parts, we only left bones when done. The veggies we picked were all winners, but I would STRONGLY recommend the LOTUS ROOT. I mean, I've had my share of them for many years, but this one... so crisp yet holding all that broth inside... even wife who normally doesn't care for it was hooked. There's enough food that you can take home stuff... esp. the broth, so you can put in stuff and make your own hotpot at home for day 2. Totally worth it, ain't no shame in asking for it to go. 4. Kumquat lemon iced tea (DRINK, 5/5, $3.95) - Get it, super refreshing and the coolant you need when eating spicy fish. VIBE: They have a giant screen playing latest Asian MV's, and surprisingly, the playlist was *quite* good, even for me who doesn't really care about k-pop, c-pop, whatever pop these days. To a point I actually asked for the streaming site. It was Chinese. :( :::::: SERVICE: Our waitress was helpful in assisting with broth choices, but the drink did take quite a long time to come out. After the sweat-inducing & hearty meal, we were treated to nice palate cleanser bubble tea. At over $100 inc. tip, this isn't cheap, but all that delicious leftover broth meant we got 2 meals out of it so I'd say worth it. Highly recommended! read more

Awesome food but I made the mistake of going with only one person. The dishes here feed at least 3. They are known for their fish dishes and you are provided a paper menu and a pen to select your choice of fish, vegetables, and sauce. The fish is first grilled, and then continues to cook in the delicious broth in the steam tray at the table. We ordered the Salmon (which comes with 2 pounds!), potatoes, kelp, lotus root, enoki mushrooms in garlic sauce. The flavors were perfectly balanced and the fish cooked to perfection. At first the thinly sliced potatoes were a bit firm but after 10 minutes they completely cooked. The dish also comes with a delicious rice on the side which they recommended topping with the sauce. The place looks like something out of a movie as you can see from the pictures and had a theatre sized movie screen on the back wall. This is definitely a cool spot to take a group to for a delicious meal and to experience something out of the ordinary. read more

Atmosphere: 5 What a fun atmosphere! I love that they have booths and there's even a huge screen at the back. Do they have karaoke events? Not sure, but the music they play has words going across like in karaoke. Very cool vibe in the restaurant. Portion: 5 If you order the fish, it is a ton of food. But no worries! If you can't finish, they can pack it up for you. It tastes just as good reheated at home. Alternatively, you could share one fish order with another person and have some appetizers on the side. I love the snacks that they give on the house. They're just enough to share before the meal comes. Flavors: 5 The fish is delicious! I love that the meal is not JUST the fish. There are other ingredients in there too. There's a lot of depth in the flavors. However, it is a bit on the salty side for me. Definitely helps to have it with rice to help cut down on some of that salt. The snacks they give are really good too. The peanuts are a bit basic but pretty addicting. My favorite is the fava beans. I've already been here twice! Both times it did not disappoint. Super delicious food. The fire under the fish helps keep the entire dish hot. It makes it so much more enjoyable! read more

Not gonna lie, I was a little hesitant to visit hot space grilled fish at first after looking at their menu and seeing the wide variety of exotic animal parts offered, but don't let that deter you from visiting! FOOD The restaurant serves mostly Szechuan spicy food, but they have some non-spicy options. Most folks order the fish when coming here, which I highly recommend! It's a large grilled hotplate with a 2-4lb fish where you choose your flavor and your toppings. They recommend selecting less than four toppings so it doesn't water down the flavor. You can also split the flavors for an additional $10. It can serve a large party and would recommend splitting this among 4-6 people. The fish doesn't come with rice so you'll need to add that if you want a side. Beef skewers were very flavorful. We also tried the passion fruit juice which was very refreshing! The appetizer that they give is also pretty good which is just a medley of sunflower seeds, nuts, etc. SERVICE Service was good! Our waiter was also super helpful and walked our party through the menu since he could probably tell we were all first timers. Overall, I was very pleasantly surprised by my visit and would highly recommend coming here! read more

Food was really good. It's not overly spicy, but still very flavorful. We got both the spicy fish pot and kebab dishes, as well as a few others. Was happy with everything, but the highlights were -spicy fish pot which was huge and would easily feed 3-4 people. This was delicious. -lamb kebabs were cooked really well, as the lamb was quite juicy. I'd recommend getting this spicy -scallops we're delicious and quite garlicky, with a generous number of scallops. Service was good. I didn't know this kind of Chinese cuisine existed. My two Chinese friends brought me here any boy, I can't wait to go back again. The flavors are just out of this world. This is definitely an upgrade from hotpot and other buffet experience. I highly recommend the pork feet and eggplant for sides and make sure you order a side of rice as well. The sparkling peach drink aso added proper balance and freshness to the meal. I highly recommend this place if you are somewhere near Edison. read more

We've seen how popular this place is when they first opened last year during the pandemic, but have never stopped in until now. Hubby and I came in for a weekday lunch and it's 5 stars all around! Any place where you eat with a bib and plastic gloves is bound to be a fun wxpwri Decor is modern and energetic. Lots of energy emanating from the giant screen playing karaoke music. Service was beyond what I expected. It's not your typical Chinese restaurant service. Here the staff came by to give us clean plates at least 5 times. They poured fresh hot tea when my cup was still 3/4 full. They came by to check that everything was good. They explained how their menu worked and answered all our questions. Our staff even looked at Yelp pictures with us to show us what one of the dishes look like! Now let's talk about the food! Forget the seafood boils that I reviewed in the past (even the ones in the south). This is so much better! We ordered the mixed seafood (~$60). It came on a large tray platter atop a burner which kept our food steaming hot the entire time. The seafood was mixed in a mala spicy sauce. There was a lot of food for 2 people. The seafood platter comes with lobster, Dungeness crab, shrimp, tofu skin, sea cucumber, cucumbers. It also comes with squid and seaweed but we asked them to exclude those. It's very flavorful but you have to like mala spicy to enjoy it. We also got the bbq beef skewer it was flavorful. The spice and dry rub is very tasty and the beef had a nice charred taste. Definitely snack on the complimentary appetizer they provide while waiting for your food. I didn't expect the peanut and broad bean to be so good! They provided complimentary herbal jelly in coconut milk, a refreshing way to end the meal.this was delicious too! By the way, the staff spoke mostly mandarin but they do speak some English too. read more

Hot Space has been getting a lot of hype since opening, and it's very well deserved. This is their third location (the first two being in Brooklyn and Flushing), and I'm very glad they've expanded to Edison. The food is delicious, and moreover the service is also attentive and excellent. They specialize in grilled fish, which I highly recommend ordering to share. They have several choices of fresh fish and lots of different flavor profiles to choose from, and our server gave a very helpful and detailed explanation of the options (e.g. how bony or strong-flavored the fish were, and the spiciness levels of the different flavors. We ordered the Barramundi with Garlic Flavor ($49.95 for 2 lb of fish, mild spiciness) and it was delicious--the fish was fresh and super flavorful. The vegetables and other add-ins to the grilled fish are also fully customizable, and we went with the Golden Combination ($10), which consists of enoki mushrooms, potatoes, lotus root, and kelp. They also have a variety of grilled items and skewers, as well as appetizers and some noodle dishes. We tried the Roasted Pork Feet ($6.95 for 2 pieces, excellent--super tender), Roasted Stinky Tofu ($2.95 per skewer, good), Roasted Pork Spareribs ($3.95 per skewer, average), and Roasted Lamb Skewer ($3.95 per skewer, disappointing). Service was really great--our servers were very helpful in giving recommendations and explanations, as mentioned above. They were also very attentive and kept an eye on our grilled fish, e.g. turning the heat off and mixing it so it didn't burn. At the end of the meal they served a complimentary dessert with grass jelly and popping boba. They don't take reservations, but they do have a waitlist on Google Maps, so I'd recommend joining that 15 minutes before you plan to arrive if you're coming at a busy time. I came for a very early dinner and was seated right away, but during peak times they get super busy (waits can be over an hour!). read more

This restaurant opened on Saturday at 12pm. As soon as the doors opened people came from all over and lucky we were able to snag ourselves a table. My husband was not as excited to try this place, but I thought it was a good experience. Since my husband isn't a fish type of guy we got the the seafood main course that they serve and like 5 or 6 good appetizers & BBQ items. I think I ended up paying about $150 and we were so stuffed. Hot Space is truly deserves a visit and five stars. We ate here for dinner on a weekday and everything was absolutely phenomenal! First of all, the service is excellent and probably the most memorable in COVID dining. We ordered skewers and were told to eat them before they got cold. Also, they made ensure that the mung bean noodles in our fish weren't getting over cooked. But what really made an impression is that our plates were changed FOUR TIMES! Wow. So attentive. The space is clean and modern. We sat in a booth which was private and comfy. There's a huge screen playing music videos which could be cool to convert to karaoke for a private event. We ordered the beef and lamb skewer, eggplant, spicy crab, and mala barramundi. The crabs are a lot of work to eat but they are really delicious and they also give you plenty of plastic gloves to use too. I really enjoyed the fish, and it was totally hits the spot mala. I think we got enoki mushrooms, mung bean noodles and asparagus lettuce which I never had before but was like a crunchy zucchini. It was good! If you like spicy you'll definitely be in foodie heaven. Everything is customizable too so I wouldn't hesitate to come here even if you don't like spicy per se. They really use quality ingredients that are fresh and high standards. Everything is cooked excellently and served to perfection too. The sea bass and garlic seasoning is great too. Also order their dumplings! If you order more than $100, you can a liter of one of their drinks. We tried the peach this time which I liked! tldr: Hot Space is awesome and after you can get your dessert fix and Hmart too. The food is so delicious! Flavors are top-notch and the portions, especially for the fish, are a lot. My family came to Hot Space several months ago and remembered loving the fish, so we decided to come back for lunch on New Years. Located in a plaza next to H-Mart, the restaurant operates on a first-come, first-serve basis and does not take reservations. Luckily we arrived later, around 2pm, and didn't have to wait. Inside, they have a fun ambiance with cool decor and a large screen in the back with music and videos playing. There are booths on the side surrounding an array of tables in the middle of the restaurant. They also have wifi, and very friendly service. We were looking for a fish with less bones, so the waiter recommended the barramundi fish which he said was popular and had tender meat. For the sauce, since we wanted it a bit spicy but not too much, he recommended the spicy garlic sauce. Additional items to go with the fish are generally $4 each. We ordered the kelp, cauliflower, asparagus lettuce, and fresh loofah; other options available include tofu, noodles, potato, mushrooms, and duck blood, among others. While waiting for the food, they provide a plate of peanuts, sunflower seeds, and roasted broad beans to snack on. For drinks we had tea and water (one small thing I wish was different was that they didn't just default to giving a plastic straw for the water). If you order over $120, you can get a complimentary kumquat and lemon sparkling water. While the prices of the fish may seem higher, when compared with the size of the dish--they have an entire, quite large, fish in the sauce with the veggies and other items--it's actually quite worth it. And again, it is so delicious! In addition, we ordered the roasted stinky tofu in foil box, and roasted lamb skewer. They were both great. The stinky tofu in particular isn't really all that stinky compared to others I've had, which makes it probably more palatable for a wider audience, and the flavor of the spicy soup it marinates in is actually quite good. At the end, they provide a complimentary dessert of grass jelly in what tasted like milk tea. All in all, a very enjoyable meal! Hot Space is definitely worth coming back to. read more

My brother and I came here to try out this new restaurant. The wait was not very long and they greeted us while we waited. The service: It is an outdoor dining setting and the waitress's were all very nice. They explained the menu to us and how to order and was on point. The only thing is that they forgot to bring us our drinks that we wanted which was the Green Apple Ice Tea. Duck Appetizer: This is a cold dish and had enough flavor with a little bit of the meat. Roasted Corn Skewer: This had flavor and was delicious. Roasted Beef Skewer: This was cooked well and had enough flavor. This was very delicious and we would order it again. Cucumber with special sauce: This tasted OK but not to our expectation. 2 lb Salmon (Spicy Garlic & Special Sauce): The spicy garlic was ok for a mild flavor spice. The special sauce tasted way better and was on point. I love how they have potatoes, lotus root, and seaweed knots in it as well. Overall: I believe that we will be back in the near future to try out some other dishes and other flavors for the fish. Maybe next time I can try out the tempting fresh juice drinks. read more

Hot Space Grilled Fish is one of my friend's favorite restaurants in the Edison area and she liked it enough to eat there two days in a row. My group of 3 visited on a Wednesday evening and there was no wait. Once seated, we were given a piece of paper to order from and we decided to do two halves (one spicy and one not spicy) and ordered side dishes of grilled chicken wings and roasted beef skewers. When the fish was brought to our table, there were burners underneath the fish so we had to be careful. The meal was definitely an interesting concept with a variety of foods stuffed in a large fish, but personally, as someone who is not a big fan of fish, I felt that the meal was overpriced (we were charged an additional $10 for having two broths). read more

First time visiting hot space in New Brunswick. This place is super poplar with the students at Rutgers. They offer spice grilled fish and many other items that is brought out in a grill. We ordered the fish and frog legs and the spice level was perfect. We were also given then a free peach seltzer drink that came in this tall dispenser. The price was decent however only downside is not being able to order the grill items to go, those can only be ordered when dinning in. The staff were friendly and they speak Chinese. read more

First of all, I want to tell you that this place is so wonderful in every way from the food to the people working there. The service is impeccable. The waiters are so attentive and friendly. The food is as authentic as it can get and very flavorful and fresh. My family and I have been going there for more than 5yrs since the day they opened. I don't usually write reviews but this is one restaurant that I keep coming back almost once every 2 wks. The ambiance is comfortable and clean and has a very upbeat vibe. We have tried everything on the menu over the years and we love the spicy frogs and garlic-flavored fish the most. If you haven't tried this place out yet, I highly recommend to give this place a chance. You won't be disappointed!! read more
