Highly recommend for grilled fish! This spot fills up, but you can just join the waitlist and come back when it's your turn. The restaurant is very spacious and perfect for large groups and families. There's peanuts, fried broad beans, and sunflower seeds at the table for you to eat while waiting for the food. The Artic clams have a pepper sauce that is super addicting and comes with cucumbers underneath that add a refreshing crunch. We tried the buffalo fish in a spicy garlic base. The buffalo fish does have many small bones which they warn about, but the flesh is very more meaty than most fishes and I don't mind the bones. It's been a while since we were last here. Hubs has been wanting to come back here, ever since. We got here and were immediately seated at a booth against the wall. We were given an iPad and ordered the following: Preserved eggs mixed with tofu - Hubs and Daughter loved this a lot, especially the century eggs. She said that she wished that the bowl was bigger. She was fighting us for it. LOL Grilled Stripe bass (2 lb) with Spicy tofu pudding flavor, luncheon meat, golden combination, black fungus, beancurd stick, mini sausage, instant noodles. Hubs said that he would've preferred the buffalo fish because he thought it tasted better. But, it was too many bones for Daughter and I, so he got the stripe bass instead. This was delicious! It was nice and spicy but not too spicy. Just the right amount. We also ordered white rice, but we only got a bowl and was hoping for more. They were generous with the instant noodle, though. It came in a small casserole pot. Hubs love this place. He loves the presentation of the fish with sides surrounding it in a big rectangular heated platter. Avoid Mala Space New Jersey -- really disappointing experience. We ordered crayfish, and at no point did the staff mention that the three-pound portion is dine-in only. So we ordered three pounds but were only served two. Only after we questioned it did they suddenly bring up this rule -- why wasn't this clearly explained upfront? This feels misleading. We then asked for a refund and to reorder for dine-in, which is a completely reasonable request. But the front desk staff, Ms. Tian, had a terrible attitude, spoke rudely, and outright refused to help us place a new order. Honestly, this was shocking: They failed to explain their own rules When an issue happened, they refused to fix it And even blocked us from ordering again Are customers not even allowed the basic right to order food? My family and I have come here a bunch of times, and we always love it! It's nice that there are complimentary nuts/snacks when you first get seated, and the ambiance is lively with the music videos playing on the back wall. Between the four of us, we usually get a 2lb fish with rice and a couple skewers plus a side dish. Typically we get the stripe bass, but this time we tried the buffalo fish. I absolutely love their spicy flavors for the fish, and we always get the golden combination for the veggie add-ins. Our favorite side dish is the hot oil clam (hot meaning spicy, the dish is actually cold), and the texture is always perfect! I've been here before and have the best things to say about the fish - usually 2 lb (or 4 lb) in a hot pot base with your toppings of choice. Very authentic Sichuan cuisine. The restaurant was full with a 30 minute wait and I observed 100% of the patrons being from China. That should be a sign that this food is satisfactory for their palate, it's nothing like the greasy yuck you get from Chinese takeout. Some of the dishes are indistinguishable from what you get in Sichuan province. I am not sure but I think there is a sister restaurant in Mianyang. There are many items on the menu, such as pig brain and bullfrog, that may scare off people unfamiliar with Sichuan cuisine. It would be nice to have a menu for non Chinese that lists more familiar dishes described in English. Some sections of the menu are not even translated. Can you imagine the fun you would have either with your group or even joining a bunch of strangers belting out some of your favorite tunes? On to the food. Read on for breakdown, what to order, and some tips to get the most out of this place! Wife and I visited after work one day and we were quite pleased with the quality, quantity, and the variety of food they offered, along with good service and very interesting & inviting interior. FOOD: 1. Lamb Skewer (APP, 4/5, $4.95) - We started off with the skewer and it was well-cooked, tasty, without much gaminess (well-covered w/ cumin & spice). Good palate-arouser 2. Roasted Oyster (APP, 5/5, $4.95) - LOVED this. It's ginormous (see pic)! But somehow, it was nutty, savory, and didn't lose flavor throughout its massive size. (I expected parts of it to be under seasoned - not the case!) The toasted topping/sauce on top was sweet & addictive. 3. Sea bass was fresh and offered good amount of meat since it was the whole fish. Subtle and chewy at different parts, we only left bones when done. The veggies we picked were all winners, but I would STRONGLY recommend the LOTUS ROOT. I mean, I've had my share of them for many years, but this one... so crisp yet holding all that broth inside... even wife who normally doesn't care for it was hooked. There's enough food that you can take home stuff... esp. the broth, so you can put in stuff and make your own hotpot at home for day 2. Totally worth it, ain't no shame in asking for it to go. 4. Kumquat lemon iced tea (DRINK, 5/5, $3.95) - Get it, super refreshing and the coolant you need when eating spicy fish. They are known for their fish dishes and you are provided a paper menu and a pen to select your choice of fish, vegetables, and sauce. The fish is first grilled, and then continues to cook in the delicious broth in the steam tray at the table. We ordered the Salmon (which comes with 2 pounds!), potatoes, kelp, lotus root, enoki mushrooms in garlic sauce. The flavors were perfectly balanced and the fish cooked to perfection. At first the thinly sliced potatoes were a bit firm but after 10 minutes they completely cooked. The dish also comes with a delicious rice on the side which they recommended topping with the sauce. FOOD The restaurant serves mostly Szechuan spicy food, but they have some non-spicy options. Most folks order the fish when coming here, which I highly recommend! It's a large grilled hotplate with a 2-4lb fish where you choose your flavor and your toppings. They recommend selecting less than four toppings so it doesn't water down the flavor. You can also split the flavors for an additional $10. It can serve a large party and would recommend splitting this among 4-6 people. The fish doesn't come with rice so you'll need to add that if you want a side. Beef skewers were very flavorful. We also tried the passion fruit juice which was very refreshing! It came on a large tray platter atop a burner which kept our food steaming hot the entire time. The seafood was mixed in a mala spicy sauce. There was a lot of food for 2 people. The seafood platter comes with lobster, Dungeness crab, shrimp, tofu skin, sea cucumber, cucumbers. It also comes with squid and seaweed but we asked them to exclude those. It's very flavorful but you have to like mala spicy to enjoy it. We also got the bbq beef skewer it was flavorful. The spice and dry rub is very tasty and the beef had a nice charred taste. Definitely snack on the complimentary appetizer they provide while waiting for your food. I didn't expect the peanut and broad bean to be so good! Hot Space has been getting a lot of hype since opening, and it's very well deserved. This is their third location (the first two being in Brooklyn and Flushing), and I'm very glad they've expanded to Edison. The food is delicious, and moreover the service is also attentive and excellent. They specialize in grilled fish, which I highly recommend ordering to share. They have several choices of fresh fish and lots of different flavor profiles to choose from, and our server gave a very helpful and detailed explanation of the options (e.g. how bony or strong-flavored the fish were, and the spiciness levels of the different flavors. We ordered the Barramundi with Garlic Flavor ($49.95 for 2 lb of fish, mild spiciness) and it was delicious--the fish was fresh and super flavorful. The vegetables and other add-ins to the grilled fish are also fully customizable, and we went with the Golden Combination ($10), which consists of enoki mushrooms, potatoes, lotus root, and kelp. They also have a variety of grilled items and skewers, as well as appetizers and some noodle dishes. We tried the Roasted Pork Feet ($6.95 for 2 pieces, excellent--super tender), Roasted Stinky Tofu ($2.95 per skewer, good), Roasted Pork Spareribs ($3.95 per skewer, average), and Roasted Lamb Skewer ($3.95 per skewer, disappointing). Service was really great--our servers were very helpful in giving recommendations and explanations, as mentioned above. My husband was not as excited to try this place, but I thought it was a good experience. Since my husband isn't a fish type of guy we got the the seafood main course that they serve and like 5 or 6 good appetizers & BBQ items. I think I ended up paying about $150 and we were so stuffed. My family came to Hot Space several months ago and remembered loving the fish, so we decided to come back for lunch on New Years. Located in a plaza next to H-Mart, the restaurant operates on a first-come, first-serve basis and does not take reservations. Luckily we arrived later, around 2pm, and didn't have to wait. Inside, they have a fun ambiance with cool decor and a large screen in the back with music and videos playing. There are booths on the side surrounding an array of tables in the middle of the restaurant. They also have wifi, and very friendly service. We were looking for a fish with less bones, so the waiter recommended the barramundi fish which he said was popular and had tender meat. For the sauce, since we wanted it a bit spicy but not too much, he recommended the spicy garlic sauce. Additional items to go with the fish are generally $4 each. We ordered the kelp, cauliflower, asparagus lettuce, and fresh loofah; other options available include tofu, noodles, potato, mushrooms, and duck blood, among others. While waiting for the food, they provide a plate of peanuts, sunflower seeds, and roasted broad beans to snack on. For drinks we had tea and water (one small thing I wish was different was that they didn't just default to giving a plastic straw for the water). If you order over $120, you can get a complimentary kumquat and lemon sparkling water. While the prices of the fish may seem higher, when compared with the size of the dish--they have an entire, quite large, fish in the sauce with the veggies and other items--it's actually quite worth it. And again, it is so delicious! In addition, we ordered the roasted stinky tofu in foil box, and roasted lamb skewer. They were both great. The stinky tofu in particular isn't really all that stinky compared to others I've had, which makes it probably more palatable for a wider audience, and the flavor of the spicy soup it marinates in is actually quite good. Tasty Chinese spot which I finally got to try in Edison despite walking past it's other location in Flushing so many times over the years. The flavors here are ON POINT! We ordered the bass with toppings and the garlic sauce; the dish was so tasty that I actually finished my bowl of rice. Other items on the menu were also pretty decent. My brother and I came here to try out this new restaurant. The wait was not very long and they greeted us while we waited. The service: It is an outdoor dining setting and the waitress's were all very nice. They explained the menu to us and how to order and was on point. The only thing is that they forgot to bring us our drinks that we wanted which was the Green Apple Ice Tea. Duck Appetizer: This is a cold dish and had enough flavor with a little bit of the meat. Roasted Corn Skewer: This had flavor and was delicious. Roasted Beef Skewer: This was cooked well and had enough flavor. This was very delicious and we would order it again. Cucumber with special sauce: This tasted OK but not to our expectation. 2 lb Salmon (Spicy Garlic & Special Sauce): The spicy garlic was ok for a mild flavor spice. The special sauce tasted way better and was on point. I love how they have potatoes, lotus root, and seaweed knots in it as well. Overall: I believe that we will be back in the near future to try out some other dishes and other flavors for the fish. Maybe next time I can try out the tempting fresh juice drinks. read more

What sort of restaurant serves 4 tofu pieces for $3.45 and 12 small pieces of eggplant for $5.95? I didn't believe my eyes that this is a joke or an actual dish they serve customers! The fried rice was tasteless. I don't recommend it at all. read more

Hot Space Grilled Fish is one of my friend's favorite restaurants in the Edison area and she liked it enough to eat there two days in a row. My group of 3 visited on a Wednesday evening and there was no wait. Once seated, we were given a piece of paper to order from and we decided to do two halves (one spicy and one not spicy) and ordered side dishes of grilled chicken wings and roasted beef skewers. When the fish was brought to our table, there were burners underneath the fish so we had to be careful. The meal was definitely an interesting concept with a variety of foods stuffed in a large fish, but personally, as someone who is not a big fan of fish, I felt that the meal was overpriced (we were charged an additional $10 for having two broths). read more

Amazingly delicious. The fish was full of complex flavors, and there was an option to split the pot to have a spicy and non-spicy option. The kebab was tender, juicy, and worth the price. First time visiting hot space in New Brunswick. This place is super poplar with the students at Rutgers. They offer spice grilled fish and many other items that is brought out in a grill. We ordered the fish and frog legs and the spice level was perfect. We were also given then a free peach seltzer drink that came in this tall dispenser. The price was decent however only downside is not being able to order the grill items to go, those can only be ordered when dinning in. The staff were friendly and they speak Chinese. read more

First of all, I want to tell you that this place is so wonderful in every way from the food to the people working there. The service is impeccable. The waiters are so attentive and friendly. The food is as authentic as it can get and very flavorful and fresh. My family and I have been going there for more than 5yrs since the day they opened. I don't usually write reviews but this is one restaurant that I keep coming back almost once every 2 wks. The ambiance is comfortable and clean and has a very upbeat vibe. We have tried everything on the menu over the years and we love the spicy frogs and garlic-flavored fish the most.
