Israel and Kris @modernpet are wonderful! They have been walking our puppy Golden Retriever for over a year and she loves them like family. I looked at a few dog walking services before deciding on Modern Pet. Israel came by or a meet and greet. Note, there are multiple walkers that you May not meet them all but they do communicate regularly with each other so you can ensure your pet is getting the best care. It is also nice because then your pet gets to know people rather than depend or get attached to one walker. They are super responsive and understanding with last minute changes to the schedule. read more

I emailed asking about care for my pet, and got quite a rude reply, in which they 1) refused due to being fully booked, 2) said I needed to book at least 2 weeks in advance, 3) chided me for not providing more information about my pet, which they've already said they're not going to care for, and 4) did not offer any alternative solutions for pet care (unlike every other place I contacted). After I posted a 1-star Yelp review for this abysmal customer service, Kris emailed me to 1) say sorry, s/he was walking dogs when they wrote that first crap email to me, 2) claim confusion about why I was upset (so what was s/he apologizing for?), 3) chide me AGAIN for not providing more info about my pet that they're not going to care for, 4) use their status as a mixed-race gay couple for emotional leverage, and 5) plead with me to take the review down because they're a small business struggling to survive the pandemic and they've had to let many of their staff go, etc. So they CAN give more detailed replies when they care to. Also, business can't be all that bad if they're fully booked up and require 2 weeks notice. One of their competitors also was booked, but gave me a recommendation for another place. Israel & Kris are absolutely wonderful!! I can't say it enough. We use them 2x/week to walk our pup Stella and cat sitting on long weekends for our boy Zucco. They're beyond thoughtful and thorough with their service. They provided a notebook on their first visit in our kitchen and write notes after every walk with Stella letting us know how she was and if she got to walk with any other dogs. When we're away for the weekend they send a picture text of Zucco and give an update on how he's doing. If you're as obsessed with your animals as I am, you know how adorable those types of things are!! Having someone in your home when you're away can feel a bit odd but their communication with us and the amount of care they give to our animals makes the experience so incredibly comfortable. Went to Florida for two weeks and hired Modern Pet. they were recommended by a friend with 2 dogs. I have 3 cats. One of the owners, Israel or Chris, forgot which one, came over for an orientation. Asked all the right questions and I was confident I and the cats were in good hands. They performed flawlessly. I have an alarm system and thus I knew what time they came and left. I was sent photo's and given reports on my family of cats. They can even administer medication. Well when I got home the place was spotless. Cleaned litter, swept up litter debris, collected mail, and I had nothing to do but greet my furry friends and unpack ! How could one ask for more. They are kind, attentive, reliable, trustworthy, funny, just plain nice people, and really seem to love what they do. I used Modern Pet for the four years I lived in Ukrainian Village at two locations and they never missed a beat. Dog walks, cat sitting, and overnights, everything went off without a hitch. But more than my words, you should trust our pup's reaction...she would bolt to the door when she knew it was walk time and heard the key rattling the door. I love modern pet! I adopted my dog Sally in November and found modern pet via the great reviews on yelp. I love knowing that my girl is in such good hands while I'm gone during the day. Sally just loves Talia, Nicole, and Israel. I love coming home to read about her daily adventures with her other doggy friends and the happenings of the neighborhood. The best! We've trusted the care of our bunnies and home to Israel and Kris for a couple of years now, and we can't say enough good things! First and foremost, we have total confidence that our bunnies will be given the very best care when we're away. When we come back home they're always happy and relaxed. Israel makes sure their litter boxes are tidy and fresh, they get plenty of cuddles and company, and they're properly fed despite some tricky instructions (Oscar doesn't have front teeth and it takes longer for him to eat. He has be to fed in a special spot with chopped up greens so that he gets enough calories). They're incredibly attentive. We keep our key on file with them (so convenient!) but had the locks changed and forgot to tell them. They coordinated with our landlord to get in, got our spare, and even offered to come back again later that day to spend extra time with the buns since they missed out on their morning social time in all the confusion. Amazing! We also have the most wonderful notes waiting for us when we return with a little summary of all they've been up to over the past few days and occasionally text updates too. We even got a super sweet and personal card from them during the holidays...they always seem to go the extra mile. :) In addition to all that, it's always very easy and secure to pay with their automatic withdrawal option, easy to request service with their client login, and wonderful to be able to welcome people into our home who we trust and know truly care about our kids. These guys are the best. Israel has been walking our pup, Oliver, for nearly four years now. We had a small break after moving closer to old town and had a terrible time trying to find a new dog walker - we tried two different companies and didn't feel that either of them cared about Oliver. I don't know what we would have done without Kris and Israel!! They have been walking our two pugs for about 4 years now and words cannot express our gratitude. They are reasonably priced and the walking groups are relatively small. Our dog Mac is older and sometimes doesn't want to move around as much but the other dogs can be motivating for our little guy. By the end of some of the walks though Kris will end up carry my little fat pug! They also leave the best notes summarizing the walks and we have enjoyed reading them. This review will be a little rambling because I just got back from vacation, but figured I better write this now or I will never remember! Kris/Israel stay at our home when we go out of town because our dogs are mammoth beasts and would be way too much to stay at their home with other dogs. On this most recent vacation, I logged in to their portal to see if we were scheduled to have our normal daytime walk (I booked vacation time months in advance) or if I was on the hook to take out our boys since I had a half day. Just days before leaving the country I saw that we weren't scheduled for boarding (you reserve time on line who knows wth the computer was doing). Insert slight panic attack and figuring out a lot of Plan B's that involved friends who we weren't sure would remember to feed our dogs. Moments later Kris responded that it was no problem, they could cover it (that also must be a P.I.T.A. to stay at someone else's house). I really appreciate what was to them a last minute booking. Vacation at ease. While we no longer are on Kris/Israel's route, our current dog walker is a good one. I know because not only have had neighbors told me about seeing them out, but I've also been working from home on calls before and heard how sweet she is to our boys. I feel bad that I'm on the phone and not saying hello (and also it seems creepy, no?) but at the same time, this is the sort of love being shown when nobody is looking! Love that. Prices/Payment/Flexibility - Our previous walker was a one person shop who relocated out of town. We loved him, but Modern Pet being small enough to have the same walkers all the time, but large enough to cover a walker being sick or on vacation is awesome. And you can be auto-billed which is great for those of us who can't remember anything. And, prices are totally in line which other places we've checked out. read more

I always used to rely on friends/family to watch my cat while I was away, but I recently moved to Chicago and I don't know anyone here, so I needed to find a real cat sitting service! In all honesty, I don't know why I never did this before. I had such a great experience with Modern Pet a few weeks ago that I've already booked them again for my next trip out of town. Not only did they have the best prices, but they came to my house for a meet and greet (free of charge!), they updated me with emails and texts while I was away, and left me a long handwritten note for when I returned. Oh, did I mention they also picked up my mail and watered my plants? I also like the fact that it's a small business and you are speaking and working directly with the owners, Kris and Israel. As far as I know they have been cat sitting for 10+ years and have a cat of their own, which makes me very comfortable leaving my own fur baby in their care. read more

Beyond disappointed with Modern Pet. Any pet service that offers to board dogs and charges this as a service has the obligation to do so. Unilaterally making the call to enter someone's house to leave their pet alone, overnight, and without first informing the owners of their doing so is absolutely absurd. It is utter insanity to advertise you board dogs but then complain about a dog barking when he stays with you! Are you kidding? He's a dog. They Bark. And this is a surprise? We used to use Modern Pet to walk our dog Oakley. Our neighbors also used Modern Pet to walk their dog, Zeus. Some of the girls who walked Oakley are great--Anika, Talia, and Nicole genuinely seemed to care for our pets, leaving entertaining notes. We felt good about their service, always making it a point to tell the girls how appreciated they were. But one bad experience outweighed any of the good Kris and Israel's employees did. This fall, our neighbors decided to have Zeus stay overnight with Kris and Israel. Again, this is a pay-for service they offer on their website, not a favor as they say below. Apparently, Kris and Israel were not happy with Zeus in their home. They didn't call the owners and explain that they weren't going to perform the overnight service, but instead they made the decision to enter our neighbor's home and drop off Zeus, locking him away in a crate sometime late evening. I awoke a few times in the middle of the night to Zeus barking. I thought it was a dream as our neighbors were out of town. When I got up early in the morning, Zeus was still barking, hearing us and Oakley upstairs. I asked my wife about Zeus, and she said something must have happened and they must be home. I texted our neighbor and asked if everything was okay--why the trip was cut short. This was at about 7:45 in the morning. Confused, our neighbor asked what I was talking about and I told him Zeus was home and barking. He told me "Zeus is with Kris and Israel." Of course, he wasn't. We have a key, so I I went to get Zeus. When I took him out of his cage, he was dirty and had a streak of white paint in his fur. I fed him, let him use the bathroom, and brought him upstairs where he proceeded to play with Oakley. I couldn't get the paint out of his fur. Sometime after 9, I took Zeus and Oakley for a long walk. When I returned before 10, I saw Israel's bike out front. I entered our building and Israel was in our neighbor's unit. When he heard me, he came out and said he "was here to let Zeus out." I told him that was already done and I had fed Zeus too. I told him he may want to call Zeus's owners--he still hadn't done that nor informed them of what happened. Unlike the account given by Kris and Israel below, I was never upset about Zeus barking. He and Oakley are large dogs--they play and bark everyday. I was, however, upset about someone you entrust with your beloved pets making their determination to drop off a dog, in the middle of the night, because they can't deal with the dog--your business is dealing with dogs! Lastly, there's no collusion or secret agreement with our decision to continue to use Anika to walk Oakley. My wife made it a point to call Anika and apologize for no longer using her based of the insanity and dishonesty our neighbor's experienced. Anika told us she still wanted to walk Oakley and was no longer going to work for them and we were happy to pay her to continue to care for Oakley. And we are very glad we did. I also wouldn't have taken the time to write the novel above but when I read Kris and Israel's inaccurate description below, I felt it was important to share how our neighbors and Zeus were treated. We also wonder how many people Modern Pet has done this to? I have no doubt that had we not been home, our neighbors never would have been informed about the situation and still charged for the overnight service. Are there other pet owners who paid for the advertised overnight service only to be duped, having their pets locked away in their homes when dogs barking was viewed as inconvenient? Based on this, we cannot recommend Modern Pet and we fired them for their dishonesty. Use them at your own peril and be thankful for neighbors (and cameras too). read more

Wish I could give them six stars! Israel & Kris ALWAYS go the extra mile for my Mio and also for their harried owners. Last minute additions and cancellations are never a problem. Mio goes nuts when he sees Israel, it's true love. I believe that they really love my boy as much as I do and would do anything to protect him when they are out and about. When we go out of town we leave Mio with them and Mio goes bananas when we get to their house. He knows he's going to have a boys weekend and comes back super happy and maybe even a little depressed!
