The Curry Chicken Salad Sandwich literally changed my life. I got it two days in a row while I was visiting Santa Fe. So so yummy! I will miss it dearly now that I'm back home! Would recommend they get a better system for delivering orders to tables though because we had a server come to us with food asking if we ordered it about three different times. This is a fun place with books lining the walls and kitchen and food items for sale. I had excellent cappuccino. I didn't really care for the Red Pepper Sonoracakes, even though there was a generous amount of lox. The pancakes were an unpleasant texture and the flavor didn't complement the lox. I would have liked more cream cheese and capers. My husband did like his Breakfast Biscuit, said it was the best biscuit he's had. Loved the interesting plates and cups and the whole vibe. read more

It's a really cozy place. The location (right off Cerillos) is a bit chaotic, but inside it's very nice. I sat in a sunny spot with my coconut pancakes. The pancakes don't look like much visually, but the passionfruit curd hiding under the cream is very tasty, and I greatly enjoyed my meal. I saw some folks working on laptops, so I guess this is a good place to sit for a while and get some work done. read more

Im not a typical reviewer but felt the need to make this review after this experience. beyond the staff being rude, inexperienced and lackluster,vthe place looks is full of the corniest IKEA-esque decor I've ever witnessed. Wanna-be chic and cracker barrel had a child after waiting 20-30 minutes for a simple order, I was presented with a BLT that looked like it was assembled by a 4 year old with low quality ingredients. thin, old tomatoes. one piece of precooked bacon and probably Walmart branded sourdough slices, of course soggy and soaked through with butter. Awesome awesome spot. The building itself is sweet. It doubles as a cute gift shop and farmhouse eatery. The vibe is modern x rustic with tons of natural light and open beams. The service was also great. The lady at the counter gave me good advice when I asked what to order. The food itself was delicious. The red pepper sonoracakes were real unique--a combination of rich flavors that blended together so well. It was wasn't like anything I've had before, and I would order them again&again. I've tried the grilled cheese and tomato soup and the pancakes. Both were very good! I love the setup of this place, it's very cute and somewhere I would want to have coffee and maybe do some work. I tried the lemon pancakes and the savory pancakes and both were amazing. The egg on the savory pancakes was a little too runny for my liking but if you like sunny side up then you will most likely love them. Definitely on my list of local recommendations. read more

Red pepper Sonora cakes are one of the best breakfast cakes I've ever had! No doubt! Also had Green Chili corn cakes and Breakfast Biscuit sandwich, which were tasty enough, but nothing to write home about. I had a very well made lavender latte. Very balanced in sweetness and a beautiful lavender. My spouse said his coffee was a very good flavor and we wished it had been a bit warmer. Lastly, we had a green juice. It wasn't sweet at all, but tart and refreshing. I mostly ordered it for the nutrition. We had a good experience with the employee taking our order. We were the second customers of the day, so she was probably feeling fresh and we were happy customers to begin with. The kitchen in the back with juice bar and walk up counter. The specialize in a flapjack made with corn and coming both sweet and Al savory versions. My husband had them with Sunnyside up egg, chipotle syrup and cilantro lime Crema. Delish I had what I'd call a Pho-Pozole. Hominy, bone broth, chicken, poached egg, garnishes and I added avocado. It was good, needed a bit more seasoning which I added with s&p and a touch of chili The green tea was delish - I didn't get the name I'm really kicking myself for that! I also got some ginger cookies to go which looked soooo good and did not disappoint! Girls at the counter were friendly enough but could have had more personality IMHO. The shop and cafe are very appealing visually, very Instagram worthy, however the folks working at the counter were literally some of the rudest, nastiest staff I've ever encountered. For example I ordered Greek yogurt with granola. My friends ordered egg dishes requiring some cooking involved. My friends had their food pretty quickly so after another 10 minutes or so I went back to the counter to check on my yogurt. The person, who took my order, acted like she had idea who I was so I reminded her that I was checking on my yogurt. She walked away without saying anything and didn't return. I was shocked but kind of hungry plus I had already paid and provided a 20% tip when I ordered, so I was patient and continued to wait at my table with my friends. Another 10 minutes goes by, same experience. She acts like she has no clue who I am again and I reiterate that I'm checking on my yogurt. And she then accused me of not being patient. Someone in the back finally brought it to the counter for me but the encounter had ruined my breakfast by then. My friends, and several people who ordered after me had all received and finished their food by then. Such a shame, could have been an awesome little breakfast place where I dropped a lot of money in their shop, but alas I'll never return. Since my last review, Modern General has applied clear coat over the chairs, eliminating any issues with the chairs taking a bite out of your clothes. This remains my go-to breakfast place in Santa Fe, and was quite a crowed pleaser for my out of state guests this past week. The Chia seed putting is tops. read more

The hubs and I came here first thing when they opened and good thing because it quickly filled up. It should be noted that we felt like we had walked into Rose's apothecary but with the addition of food and coffee. I started with a cold shot of ginger, apple and honey. It was fresh pressed and wonderful. Then the hubs and I both got oat milk cappuccinos which were pretty perfect. For my main I did the chia oats with granola, raspberries and passion fruit curd. I was so happy with my choice - absolutely delicious and I'll be attempting a recreation back at home. The hubs did the stir fried rice with veggies and an egg. It was a pretty large portion and he sadly could only eat half although it was awesome and packed full of flavor. I didn't check the chalkboard menu, because why would you need to? Alas, on the chalkboard menu the ABQ egg bowl does have bacon. After having to send it back because I don't eat bacon, I was told that they have 2 different menus and that it is deliberate. No idea. Anyway, they don't have GF toast so I had rice for a side. The bowl was a very small portion for the cost & simplicity of it. It really could have been a side. Both bowl and rice were covered in big chunks of scallions which I had to pick out. Excess garlic as well. The vibe is very Rose Apothecary from Schitt's Creek but bought at Hobby Lobby or something. Would love more unique/handmade touches. Modern General is near the hotel I was staying at and as I walked into town and back every day, I would pass it. I think it has a really cute interior. Locals seem to go there and get some work accomplished, instead of working from home. So, I love that they have that option available to them. On my first visit, I tried the gingered apple juice. I got a regular size. It was so good! I loved it so much that I went back the next day and got a large. It's pretty pricey for juice, but it was also really really good! Freshly pressed. Cute little shop with easy to find parking with their own lot of 4-6 spaces. It's a mix of a small store with plenty of seating and a huge picnic table to house a large party. Seems like also a great spot to study and simple coffee shop vibes. You must get the Green Chile Cilantro Corncake, looks very similar to a pancake but the texture is different. Loved this out of the set my friends got. Savory and not too spicy evened out by the slight sweetness of the syrup. This was fantastic and the runny Sunnyside egg made my morning brighter. The flavors together came and paired so well together. There was also another corncake that my friend ordered that was similar to okonomiyaki and quite good too! The place itself is very cute and interesting on the inside. The food has potential to be great but felt a little over priced given the final product we got. It was good, but not that good. Honestly, however, the service was what put a nail in the coffin of this experience. Have you ever seen those videos of girls pretending to be someone in a given service, like "the bartender who doesn't care if you live or die?" We got to experience that in real life. The girl taking our orders was laughing and smiling with her coworkers as she walked up to the counter and as soon as she turned her head to look at us her face went completely flat. No greeting, no smile. She could not have been more annoyed at having to deal with us and wow she made that super obvious. Located in a general store-looking space, this little breakfast cafe also sells a lot of local goods focused on the home. Kitchen items, gardening tools, coffee-table books. The whole shebang. They specialize in savory pancakes, and that's exactly what we went for. Both of us got the Green Chile Cilantro Corncakes. Oh. My. Gosh. Perfect corn cake flavor, and the saltiness of the green Chile and crema went perfectly. The egg on top added some more savory-ness, and the agave syrup was the perfect sweet addition. They have some unique "pancakes" and bowls. Our party ordered a little of this and that. Everyone enjoyed their dishes (except the kids since this was a little too foodie-ish, fancy for them.) I had the Asian bowl ... fried rice with an egg. This is my go-to, comfort dish at home. Tthey really stepped up the flavors so I was a happy camper. All the adults who ordered the "pancakes" raved about how light, unique and flavorful they were. One of the kids ordered the avocado toast... and it was just that... lots and lots of mashed avocado on 2 pieces of bread (toast). They do not skimp on the avocado. So... if you like avocado... get this. As for drinks... they have really good black coffee. They can make plain lattes and a lavender latte but no others. They also have fresh juices that they make right there... we didn't try any, but they looked and sounded delightful. They also had cookies. Since I didn't drink my calories in a latte, I opted to get a chocolate cookie with pepitas. YUM! Glad I only had 1. It was not overly sweet but had a great deep chocolate flavor and the pepitas were a nice and different nut-crunch-taste. read more

After finding out that there is nowhere to park despite the place being mostly empty, I park down the road, walk there, and encounter shockingly poor service. The staff clearly did not want to take anyone's order (and this is counter service, and you bus your own table). It appeared that the staff were competing to see who could ignore the customers at the counter the longest. It was actually awkward. The food was mediocre at best and not worth dealing with no parking and hateful staff. read more

My daughter and I enjoyed a great little trip to Santa Fe on a beautiful fall extended weekend. One morning we enjoyed brunch at Modern General. We were staying at the El Rey Court, and Modern General was on the same street and also close. My daughter ordered the Lemon Cakes and loved them! They were tart, light and fluffy. The Lemon Cakes were layered with lemon curd and smothered with a blueberry compote, and then drizzled with their signature buttercream. Oh my! Very yummy! I ordered their "Best BLT". It was classic and excellent, with juicy fresh tomatoes, crisp romaine lettuce, thick bacon, and served on sourdough bread. It was a quiet and cute place. Modern General came highly recommended to us by friends who had visited, so we stopped in here eager to see what all the hype was about this "healthy, trendy brunch spot." The food was so yummy and did a great job of incorporating the Santa Fe cuisine (e.g. green Chile) throughout. My boyfriend ordered the breakfast biscuit which was "one of the best breakfast biscuits" he ever had, as the biscuit itself "melts in your mouth." It's also a nice touch that they included some lime avocado chia pudding on the side to sample. I ordered the Albuquerque scramble and it was AMAZING. As mentioned, the green Chile added so much flavor without making the eggs too spicy. It was delicious, but not too heavy for a breakfast dish. We also ordered a cappuccino and oat milk latte, both of which were well done-- only question is, why no handle on the mugs? Was a bit too hot to drink/hold for a while. The ambiance is STUNNING and definitely adds to the experience of dining in.
