Downtown Subscription is usually busy, but the early morning hours are a bit quieter and you're more apt to find a quiet corner to read/write/set up workshop or meet up with a friend/colleague. It can get quite crowded in the winter time, but they do have an outside patio/courtyard that does open up a bit more space for seating come spring/summer/fall. The staff has been friendly in my experience, I can't say that I've ever had a negative experience thus far (knock on wood). Some random information: ~ A water station is available, which is a plus. ~ Parking is available, however, at busier times, you may have to find street parking and do some walking. And the best information: ~ If you happen to be a reader, there is a bookstore near by (Garcia Street Books) that opens around 10am, I believe. A nice café next to the bookstore Garcia Street Books, located at 376 Garcia St, Santa Fe, NM 87501. The space is large, and you can tell many locals gather there regularly, giving it a strong community feel. The service was okay: a man taking orders and handling the register was friendly and cordial, while the woman making the coffee was a bit dry in her demeanor. However, the coffee was excellent, so that didn't bother me at all. The croissants were soft, warm, and very tasty, a perfect match for the coffee. The café also features artwork hanging on the walls, (looks like they like cats very much ) and a small section of magazines and newspapers near the entrance, which I really enjoyed. The location is excellent, right next to a independent bookstore, making it a great stop before or after browsing books. Overall, I recommend this café for its quality coffee, relaxed atmosphere, and convenient location. read more

I was met with complete and utter disrespect, entitlement from the staff. and as I was leaving and by the door, the young entitled boy, yells "get out and never come back". This is your very proper coffee shop/newstand in a neat area of downtown near the state capitol. I ordered a Cortado and it was drinkable at the time of purchase. No too hot. Perfect. This place has a super atmosphere and you can tell locals frequent this coffee shop on the daily! There is a beautiful outdoor courtyard as well to enjoy your coffee and pastry. There were numerous delightful looking pastries that I would definitely try out next time. It was nice to see a newstand with lots of magazine choices. Those are hard to come by nowadays. Some of the people who work here are rude and/or dismissive. They act like it's a huge imposition to wait on you. And if there's a problem they talk and laugh or glare at you. It's like they never left high school except they're in their thirties. Kind of disgusting. Don't know what their deal is but they seem to be carrying big chips on their shoulders. Watch out for the plain Jane, short woman with her hair pinned back with kiddie clips. Others have reported her here. She's awful. And watch when they make your coffee. Just sayin. If you can get beyond all of that, everything is great! Just noticed plain Jane is no longer wearing clips probably due to reports on her rude behavior. She's wearing it down now. Good coffee. Moderate prices. A locals favorite... GREAT garden, outdoor area (if you don't have a dog or want to be around dogs), although there are only 5 tables (umbrella-shaded areas) & usually full. I don't come here often because I usually have my dog. Dogs are only allowed on the sparse front porch, by the entrance & on the parking lot. Today, we decided to come because we didn't have our dog. I have decided I probably won't be back. The garden was full, the cashier was not friendly at ALL... and the barrista made one of our orders wrong. This place is magical. Their outside seating feels a little bit of something out of a fairy tale if we are talking 'whimsy'. Or perhaps that of an English country garden for a cup of tea. I obviously found their outdoor space, garden area and landscaping to be most enjoyable. If you enjoy having a beverage with an indoor/outdoor option, this place is for you. I have sent an email to the owner. I was punched in the face by a 20 something at the shop yesterday morning on Mother's Day. The kid ran a stop sign going 40 miles per hour coming through the neighborhood. He parked sideways and nearly hit a woman when he drove into the lot. When I got in line behind him he turned and cursed at me and told me that I nearly hit him at the stop sign. I assured the kid I had stopped. He kept berating me and I asked him again to please just order his coffee. The young man punched me in the face. I did NOT defend myself or cause any further scene but stepped away and called the police. Many regulars witnessed this attack. The police were called and the child is going to have to appear in court. One of the young employees is apparently friends with this young fellow and refused to give the owners contact information. We love the coffee there and patronize this shop every morning. It is incredible to me that this young kid behaved the way he did. It is more Incredible that the employee refused to give the owners info and more strange that the security cameras there were not working, otherwise the boy would have been jailed. I am still waiting to hear from the owner of the shop. The kid will have to appear in court and I would hope that he would be banned from the coffee shop. One simply doesn't expect to be violently attacked while trying to order a coffee. Update: After several attempts the owner called me back. Didn't apologize. Didn't ask how j was. Neighborhood hangout with a fantastic location but a predominantly Boomer clientele - The last remaining demographic that can afford to live on the east side - which leads to long slow lines. The coffee is just okay and the baristas are mostly hipster females with attitudes. Used to be a total mecca for magazines but those days are far gone. $6 for coffee and a refill served with a side of snark. These days I prefer Ohoris or Iconik. read more

I first visited this coffee shop when it was downtown & had magazines, hence the name "Downtown Subscription." I'm a twenty-five year resident and find that I gravitate to this coffee shop more than others despite the change in ownership that others complain about. I like Casey & think he does a great job. I've also never had an issue with the service or staff, but will concede there is a consistent turnover which is to be expected for this type of work. In reading the negative reviews, what I've noticed is that most of these people are from Texas. Maybe their negative reviews say more about Texans than the coffee shop. Who knows? What truly astonishes me are the people who prefer Starbucks. Are you kidding? Starbucks sucks, but if you like sugary, flavored drinks, I guess that's the place for you. Discrimination!! Wanted to love it, coffee good, cute space BUT was immediately denied seating in the back yard with my service dog, violating ADA protections. They explicitly said "the patio is open but no dogs not even service dogs" and they were nasty and rude about it shouting at my across the restaurant I explained the law to them and the owners and workers said "we DON'T CARE you can't sit there with your dog" I have reported them to the legal authorities in Santa Fe and the Us department of justice Sad that there are still places that discriminate and do not understand or care about laws that protects people with disabilities From the ADA Laws that Apply to Food Service Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), privately owned businesses that serve the public, such as restaurants, hotels, retail stores, taxicabs, theaters, concert halls, and sports facilities, are prohibited from discriminating against individuals with disabilities. The service animal must be permitted to accompany the individual with a disability to ALL areas of the facility where customers are normally allowed to go. Having read a few yelp reviews of the place, i had to check it out. Yes, indeed, the staff range from subdued to surly, but i was an angry young intellectual myself once, and i much prefer that to the bubbly server who ingenuously asks, "so, hows your day going?" but doesn't really want you to answer that question. The clientele on the other hand, are all driving Teslas and Range rovers, and are almost entirely Boomers who got their last carmel machiatto from the Starbucks drive through. Class warfare at its very best. Sitting at the outside patio, I overheard a Karen complaining that her plumber drives a Mercedes and that must mean he's a thief. Nice one, Karen. I saw that someone got punched here recently, but sadly that must have been a black swan event. Oh, the pastries were great and the coffee was smooth and flavorful. Highly recommended. read more

I was in the coffee shop today and one day last week. Last week it was very warm, so I asked the barista if I could close the door to the outside. She said yes. I also noticed that one of the ceiling fans, there are two of them, wasn't working. I asked about it and was told that they didn't know why it wasn't working. Today, it still wasn't working. What a disappointing place. They don't carry news worthy publications like Wall Street journal and their staff is entitled and rude. Though conveniently located, it's worth a longer drive to go elsewhere. The folks that do go there are about the rudest crowd of folks I have ever witnessed. It's so bad I think this place takes pride in their hatred of people so it resonates with the patrons. Their food is just mediocre and a better cup of Joe can be found at Allsups or any convenient station comparatively. Truly and unmoving place I ventured into 5 times while there for a month. This is such a fabulous neighborhood place. I always stay in the area and love to walk over to the Downtown subscription. There are always interesting people enjoying conversation and laughter inside and out. On a warm morning, people and their dogs will be enjoying the environment and great weather talking, reading a book or the news, listening to music, or planning their day. The service is great--coffee and tea selections are available for dining in or taking with you. There are plenty of magazine and books to peruse while you are waiting for your order. You wonder how it is possible to mess up a cappuccino .. well, I congratulate Downtown Subscriptions on exemplifying that talent! I hadn't been in DS in many years and was saddened at its decline. The display cases, which should have been overflowing with goodies, were rather barren in their offerings. My cappuccino was lacking entirely in full coffee flavor, was barely lukewarm and the foam on top was sloppily done and did not have a nice "art" finish on the surface of the coffee. Downtown Subscription is a hidden gem, tucked in a residential area. While in Santa Fe we traveled around and stopped in multiple cafes in hopes of finding a respectful cup o' joe. Downtown Subscription was by far the best one we found. We all liked it so much we made it an every morning stop for the rest of our trip. While talking to one of the baristos he told us that all of their ingredients (milk, grinds, cream, etc.) are all purchased from local, family owned farms within the area. That is rare to find nowadays so it's a relief when you stumble upon one. It was about the fourth or fifth day returning here when the baristo noticed the foam looked a little off while making my latte. He poured it out and started over. Again, something was off. He turned to a coworker and looked at the drink she was making. Hers looked iffy as well. Immediately he took every single jug of milk and took them to the back. After a quick minute he returned with 5 or 6 new, unopened jugs with a later expiration date. The original ones still had 3 or 4 days left anyway. This proves that the baristos and baristas know their coffee, and take pride in their work. Even enough so that they are willing to throw out half their stock of milk! Try finding a Starbucks or Coffee Bean employee willing to do that. read more

I went several times during the week I was here and didn't have any of the problems people mentioned. I wonder if they've replaced the snobby staff? I liked that they had Splenda, so many places don't anymore because they're trying to be all natural but I just like how Splenda sweetens the best, neener neener. There was plenty of seating, the room was very bright and cheery, they have a nice patio, the wifi works, and I thought the coffees were fine (not amazing, but not horrible either). I absolutely love this coffee shop in Santa Fe. It's centrally located and has a great selection of magazines inside as well as a great atmosphere. The coffee is delicious but my favorite is the chai- its creamy, smooth and never let's me down. Moving on to the service- this place gets extremely busy on Sunday's but don't let that turn you away, I was thoroughly impressed by how quickly the cute barista Nick took care of my drink order. His latte art is phenomenal and I recommend to anyone passing through or local to the Fe area to check out DTS- they're great. read more

I have been coming here for over 15 years. I loved it when it had its first owner. There was more life to this place and lots of magazines to look over and more food offerings. Since a new owner has come in its lost some its luster. Coffee is great as always. Backyard seating is very nice. Its next to my favorite bookstore Garcias. Lots of interesting people come in to this place which is really nice The one thing I would suggest. Change the music towards the crowd you have come in here. Hard rock is not it. Also for some reason they are start cleaning the place an hour before it closes. So you get loud vacuum noise...not good when you are on the phone. They don't notice you when they are cleaning. And its confusing to customers because they start cleaning at 3pm but the place doesn't close until 4pm. You are losing customers. Which is not the time to lose customers. Overall I wish there was more thought put into this place and or time. But I will continue to come here just for the coffee. read more

Went here for afternoon espresso, which was very good. Lots of indoor seating at tables, but not much ambiance. Lovely outdoor patio.

Downgrading my review to 1 star, and here is why. I order a large latte to go, and a sticky bun. I want to sit there and eat my food while enjoying my coffee, then take the rest of my coffee with me when I'm done eating. The tab is just under $10, and it tip $2 and change. So I finish my sticky bun, and at that point I have drank 1/2 my latte. On my way out I stop at the counter and ask if they will top it up with regular coffee. The answer is, "No, we don't do that, especially not with togo cups." The sign on the menu says if you order a regular coffee in a "for here" cup, cost $2, you can get one free refill. So let me get this straight. If I had ordered your cheapest coffee drink, in a ceramic mug, I could then get a refill and dump it into a paper cup to go, thus needlessly wasting a little bit of your staff's effort and water and dish detergent? But if I spend 5 times the amount of your cheapest drink (not to mention tipping you 25%), I can't get 5 cents worth of regular coffee to top up my togo cup before I leave? How ridiculous. Additionally, every time I've been here the counter staff has been a bit surly. And there is no wifi, which, if you're with AT&T is especially bad because this is in one of their dead zones. The expansive garden patio is very pleasant, and they have a good selection on the magazine rack, but there are plenty other coffee shops around downtown Santa Fe that offer better customer service. read more

Visiting Santa Fe and a very nice lady at one of the galleries told me about this coffee shop. First, the space is beautiful. Great light and relaxed clientele. I ordered coffees for my husband and I. The young lady who took the order seemed to be pleasant. This was about 4:00 in the afternoon (on 3-7-14) and I was the only customer at the cashier or anywhere near the counter. The young man made the coffees and set them on the counter where I didn't see them. Both of the staff never bothered to say "Your coffees are ready." I stood there and stood there - normally staff would let you know they are ready. They just had so much attitude. Really? Why are you working there if you don't want to provide customer service? Why would the owner have people like that? And the icing on the cake was the Americano was lousy! There are so many coffee houses - I won't be back to this one. read more
