35 North is located at the Shops at Santa Fe on level 2. There was plenty of signage (shown in the photos) directing us to the right location, so it was easy to find. The café has a cool, modern vibe with plenty of indoor seating as well as a nice outdoor patio. They were very busy on a Saturday morning. The counter staff was very matter-of-fact. Not rude, but not especially warm or welcoming either. Honestly, I got the impression she was just under a lot of stress. We also asked another staff member if we could use one of the patio umbrellas (they were all closed for some reason), and he was prompt and friendly, which we appreciated. We ordered a toasted everything bagel with cream cheese, a meat-filled empanada, a honey latte, and a cold brew. The cold brew was a little too dark for my taste, though coffee preferences are definitely subjective. Interestingly, there's a place in Albuquerque that has an almost identical flavor profile. The toasted everything bagel was very good, but it didn't come with quite enough cream cheese. The single cream cheese packet also felt a bit lackluster presentation-wise. That said, when we asked for more, the response was friendly and accommodating. The honey latte had beautiful latte art and great flavor, definitely a highlight. The empanada, filled with ground beef, green chile, and piñon, was a bit over-toasted, but the filling itself was flavorful, even if somewhat sparse. An easy walk from the hotel and a TON of space to hang out. Great upbeat vibe before 8am on a random weekday. The baristas are friendly and busy. Cool shop that covers three spaces at the back of the strip mall. If you want the buzz of commerce, hang out where you order coffee and (if you're lucky) they might be actively roasting a batch. Looking for a calm outdoor space for fresh air? Head to the patio with plenty of shade. Need a table for that meeting with a bunch of friends? Try the third space across the hall with a huge map on the wall and ample comfy seating, too. Coffee was crisp and velvety. A decaf flat white with heavy cream will never do you wrong. Great spot. GPS took us to Baskin Robbin's but go inside the mall and toward the elevator, you will find this cute indoor/outdoor coffee shop that provides free WiFi and a clean restroom. I needed the WiFi to download a ticket but ordered up a deliciously brewed latte to sip on while the download happened. I didn't have any food but the nipples looked great. I don't think this spot is really for tourists, because it was hidden off of the main street in a little mall. You wouldn't have guessed that such a cute coffee shop would be embedded in there, but it was. I ordered a pumpkin spice latte with less pumpkin syrup. The person behind the counter was concerned that it was just the right amount of sweetness for me, and told me I could come back up to get it adjusted. It turned out it was absolutely perfect and didn't need any adjustments. Found in the very back of one of the little mall areas off of the Plaza, 35 North is a pretty cool space. I ended up with a rose cardamom matcha with oat milk and I really enjoyed it. The space they have with chairs and tables is great for pulling out the laptop and getting some work done. I think that really was the best part, great seating and lovely views as the snow came down outside. They also have an outdoor patio area which was not possible because of weather but would be enjoyable on a sunnier day. read more

The shop was extremely busy. We didn't mind the wait until we were told it'd take 20-30 minutes for an espresso-based drink. To save time, we opted for a couple cold brews. I was a bit concerned to see the cold brew poured out of a plastic barrel on the floor. My concern was quickly validated when we tasted our drinks. I'm not even sure we were served coffee. The drink felt like a heavy, yet dilute, tea? We tossed the rest. The positive news is that 35 North has reopened at its former locale. 35 North had been my regular café since I arrived and until it closed without warning. Not finding the other Santa Fe coffee places to my liking for various reasons (bean quality, infrequent roasting if any, stale beans, storage that accelerates oxidation, did I say stale beans, mostly underwhelming machinery, infrequent cleaning/maintenance), I was not in a good place all these months (keeping alive with a subscription of the increasingly disappointing Hair Bender blend from Stumptown, which unfortunately was sold by Duane Sorenson to Pete's Coffee in 2015, and nine years later it's pretty obvious Stumptown has been swallowed whole by Pete's). I had only recently found a roaster, a guy named Tom with his solo venture, Odd Box, at 1314 Apache, that has been very much to my liking, but right at Christmas due to unexpected client visits suddenly I ran out of beans, and Tom had taken a few days' vacation (about which he had told me the prior time I was in his roastery). By happenstance, someone at FB Santa Fe Foodies indicated 35 North would open Saturday, December 28, and of course there I was to buy a bag to tide me over until Tom returned on the 30th. Except for one TINY detail. 35 North reopened, but no roasting was taking place, and when I inquired, the staff had no idea when (or IF!) they would begin roasting. I get it. Just because one reopens does not mean that the old supply line can be re-established, if it still exists. The coffee game has become more dynamic if not outright volatile. Climate change and droughts, especially in the large producing countries of Brazil, Vietnam and Colombia, don't help matters, and the demand decline the $tarbuck$ and other mammoth chains have suffered, in part because the US consumer is waking up to the fact he/she has been fraudulently sold sugar with a bit of coffee as "coffee", has not offset the lower supply. If I were 35 North, the no-brainer is to outsource the roasting to Tom at Odd Box. He is absolutely dedicated, skillful and knowledgeable, he is not a retail competitor, and at the moment my guess is Tom has excess capacity and access to more quality green beans. Plus currently Odd Box has an Ethiopian light roast from the southern extremity of Yirgacheffe, actually 40km south of Yirgacheffe proper, a co-op named Halo Beriti, that can lay claim to the highest altitude coffee grown in Ethiopia (altitude 1460-2071, with a patch at 2300, meters (Santa Fe by comparison sits at 2194 meters - imagine growing coffee here!)). It is rather good! I am enjoying an early morning cup right now while listening to Ben Patterson's Cooking in the Couve on KVSF 101.5 The Cat. read more

Stopped in on a chilly Sunday for something to warm us up. If you enter on E Water street, the coffee shop is on the second floor. There are steps and an elevator that can get you there. If you enter on San Francisco St, you're already on the second floor! I ordered a turmeric ginger chai latte. I've had variations of this drink, but not exactly this. It was so deliciously foamy. The color was influenced by turmeric, though I felt like it tasted mostly of ginger. I didn't get any of the chai spice flavor. Either way, it was delicious. My husband got a caramel latte and said it was really good. One of the coolest things about this shop is that they roast their own beans. Another is the view. After we got our drinks, we sat in the cold sun and we're able to look out on Water street. It was a lovely way to enjoy our drinks. read more

A proper espresso shop with well trained baristas, a menu they are happy to explain, Wi-Fi, and enough seating to while away the morning in. I was thrown because it's actually located in a mall, rather than being a separate storefront with its own entrance. It opens well before its retail neighbors, so you'll end up walking a mostly empty, yet well lit corridor to get there, assuming you enter from the side facing the square. I was served promptly once I got to the front of the line, and the shot was balanced and sweet. To be fair, the seating space is more towards the sterile side as opposed to having a lived-in feel. 35° North Coffee is a cozy coffeeshop located in an indoor mall on the Plaza called 'The Arcade'. Upon entering, take the stairs or the elevator one floor up and it'll be at the very far end. Trying to find it was a bit maze-like, but it was certainly worth the wait. Behind the counter, there's enough equipment and burlap bags of coffee beans to make one realize they're serious about their caffeinated beverages here. My husband's coffee was rich and deep, and I was delighted to find they know their way around other non-coffee drinks because my matcha latte was bright verdant and perfectly sweetened - just the way I make it at home. The layout of this cafe is a little funny since it's divided into three separate spaces. There's the space where the drinks are ordered and prepared. Afterwards, those who prefer to take their coffee outdoors can enjoy the al fresco balcony space, while those who want a indoor space can go across the hall to a generously-sized sitting area with plenty of tables and outlets. I chose the latter and was as happy as a clam with my book matcha for a quiet hour. Non-dairy milks are available (almond and oat, I believe).
