Our group of eight met up in Santa Fe for a reunion last month, and immediately settled into tracking down the best restaurants. Harry's Roadhouse was located on the way between our vacation rental and town. It caught our eyes because every time we drove past it---and I do mean every single time---the parking lot was jammed. Didn't matter if it was morning, afternoon, or evening, so we knew we'd have to try it out for ourselves. It took some planning, but we managed to get there for an early dinner on our last full day in town. We were so glad we did! We were seated out back on the patio, which we liked. The place felt more like a friend's house than a restaurant. But the food is much better than whatever your friend cooks up! We're a group with widely varying tastes. We ended up ordering everything from a New York strip steak to carne asada tacos to what they call a Buddha Bowl. Everyone really enjoyed their dinners, and there was much sharing around the table. I ordered one of the specials: crab-stuffed sole. Normally I wouldn't consider ordering seafood in a land-locked state. But the crab-stuffed sole "spoke" to me, so that's what I got. And it was delicious! Plus, their portions are very generous. We had a great server named Eric. He handled our large group with humor, care, and patience. Being a group of eight, there was an automatic 20% gratuity added to the bill, which most restaurants do these days. Eric was the only server we encountered on our trip who took the time to point it out. We have been to Santa Fe many times, but somehow managed to miss this landmark café. I chose the breakfast special - shrimp and grits with two eggs on top. They sautéed the shrimp with bacon, peppers, and mushrooms. Really good. My wife had the famous lemon ricotta pancakes. Amazing.....better than advertised. My only complaint about a terrific breakfast experience was an up-charge of $3.50 for "100% Pure Grade A Maple Syrup". You can buy terrific maple syrup at Sam's for $12.28 for 32 oz. (38 cents / oz.). Charging $3.50 for 2oz. of syrup seems excessive, but that's just my opinion. I'm not sure why this was frustrating to me, as we have overpaid for food all over Santa Fe, including other restaurants with similar up-charges for "pure maple syrup". Met some friends at Harry's by their suggestion. I got the veggie burger and a salad, and wow! It was one of the best veggie burgers I've had. Made of veggies rather than mashed soy protein and also the beet mayo was so delightful and flavorful (that's the red stuff). I got my choice of salad's as my side and the southwest salad was a great choice. All the veggies were fresh and tasty. The service was great and was very attentive with refilling the coffee and making sure we had everything we needed for our meal. I will definitely need to go back to try more menu items. It's outside of the crazy crowded areas of Santa Fe, a bit of a drive but not really that much, with the advantage of lots of parking and not insanely crowded. I had a delicious breakfast at Harry's Roadhouse. It was the first time I've ever been here but I've heard really good things about it. I had the veggie omelette that comes stuffed with swiss cheese, mushrooms, spinach, and scallions served with home fries and sour dough toast. I ordered a hot mocha latte which was delicious. This place wasn't too far off of where our AirBnb was located. We pulled into the small lot, that was quite filled, and luckily we snagged a spot. We put our name on the waitlist and I don't think we waited more than 15 minutes. We were a party of 3. We were seated, greeted by the waitress, and she took our drink orders. She brought my tea, which is my usual drink. We ordered our food. I drank all of my tea. She came right along to refill it. But first, she refilled my glass with ice and she poured in the tea. She said they don't put ice in their tea since it dilutes it. I can appreciate a business who takes their tea so seriously. It was a great cup of tea. I got a steak quesadilla. It was pretty good. Wish I could remember my dessert, I got some sort of brownie, topped with ice cream and a bourbon sauce. It was so decadent and good. I ate every last bite. I love the food in New Mexico! I love when asked if I want something smothered, I can say Christmas and know I'm getting best of both worlds with red and green. We have visited Harry's on many of our visits to the area. The food is always good and the service is always on point. We sat in one of the side rooms so it didn't feel crowded. I ordered Huevos Rancheros with two basted eggs. The eggs were on top of a blue corn tortilla and there was a side of black beans to go with. The red and green chile smothered it to perfection. I could eat this meal breakfast, lunch and dinner. I was parched so my beverage of choice was water. My husband had the California Dreamin' hand-held burrito and a house margarita. He wasn't sure if he wanted a salted rim so our server offered to have half of it rimmed with salt. That was the perfect balance for him. The waiting area can be crowded, but it's shaded and usually cool & breezy in hot weather. The ribs were tough, the burrito was bland and the carne asada tacos had very little meat which was mixed with cartilage. The food was average, both were undercooked for medium. The green chile was barely noticeable. After we received our food, we never saw the waitress again until she brought the check. We were disappointed recently, our waiter totally overworked with a 10 top, two 4-tops and our 2 top. Needless to say, the service was very slow and the kitchen slow too. About 20 minutes to get a shrimp appetizer, and another 30 minutes to get our entrees. We both ordered the barbecue chicken which was mediocre at best, not having been cooked until tender. We complained to one of the owners who seemed unmoved and failed to offer us any compensation. I ordered Asada Tacos which came on blue corn tortillas and they were amazing. Fresh delicious slaw and cilantro creama. They were so yummy. Good food in a fun setting with lots of local and funky art. We went in around 2pm on a Sunday afternoon in mid-October. The parking lot was packed so we expected a long wait. The host told us 20-30 minutes but our party of 3 was seated in less than 10 minutes. I ordered the wild mushroom pizza. This was about a 10" pie with a nice assortment of mushrooms, mozzarella and spinach. I don't remember there being much spinach but the mushrooms were very good. I also had a small chopped salad as a side. It was a nice assortment of crunchy vegetables but I couldn't tell that it was dressed. Pizza and salad were both very good. My wife got the apple salad, which she said was very good. It had romaine, apples, blue cheese, walnuts and dried cherries with a light poppy seed dressing. The third in our party got a plain hamburger with fries, which she said was good. The service was fast and the prices reasonable ($12-$15). Harry's Roadhouse is a good spot to grab lunch away from the Plaza and when you want something besides Mexican (which they have but isn't the main food on the menu). read more
