Calabrian chili sauce, mozzarella, Asiago, Parmesan, pepperoni, salami, anchovies, black olives, red onion, whole garlic, hot honey glaze!
    Ryan M.

Yes, you read that correctly; San Antonio's bon vivant/man(child) about town, purveyor of pretention has awarded a chain pizza restaurant five stars. Have I gone mad or is Mod Pizza really a five-star experience? A bit of both, perhaps! I entered Mod Pizza with lowered expectations and left wondering how a pizza put together on an assembly line (think Subway but with pizzas instead of sandwiches) could be so gosh darn tasty. I'm still wondering, but I can't argue with results; over the course of four recent visits, I've experienced nothing short of excellence on all fronts. The first thing I noticed upon entering this location was that the restaurant was immaculate. The open kitchen was spotless, the tables were all clean and bussed, and the entire restaurant smelled of hearth. Even the restroom was pristine, an unfortunate rarity among fast-casual restaurants. Mod's claim to fame is that you can build a pizza of your own choosing. You pay a flat fee ($8.95, if memory serves) for an 11-inch pizza and then choose as many toppings as you want at no additional cost. Considering that most national pizza joints charge per topping, Mod's "anything or everything" policy is enticing. Once you're done selecting your toppings, the pie goes into a gas oven and cooks in about three minutes. On my first visit, I created a fancy-ass pizza topped with mozzarella, parmesan, asiago, Gorgonzola, fresh ricotta, red onions, whole cloves of roasted garlic, and a fig-balsamic glaze. The affable young lady behind the counter had no difficulty keeping up with my requests and was very generous with the toppings. When I bit into the first bite, I could taste every component...and I hummed a little ditty to myself. The crust was thin and crispy, the red onion retained its astringency, and the funk from the Gorgonzola contrasted nicely with the sweetness and acidity from the fig-balsamic glaze. I can take credit for this pizza's conception, but Mod executed it perfectly. On subsequent visits, I've experimented with a variety of toppings. I won't bore you on the specifics, but every pie has been a winner. Pro tip: consult the online menu beforehand and jot down your toppings in advance. Doing so will keep the line moving briskly and prevent you from putting together a slapdash Frankenstein's monster of clashing components. Now, don't get me wrong. By giving Mod five stars, I'm not implying that they are on par with a place like Il Forno. That would be a ridiculous, unfair comparison. What I *am* saying, though, is that Mod is great for what it is: an innovative fast-casual concept and a great value. I even approve of their music selections. I've heard them play "Sound and Vision" by David Bowie, "The Killing Moon" by Echo and the Bunnymen, and even "Fire" by The Crazy World of Arthur Brown. Hey, that's my main man! Go there!

I tried the new cinnamon dessert, I want my money back. It was awful and was not worth the money. I really liked this place, especially the cezar salad, but can tell it's starting to change. Don't change please.

First, I apologize for not getting a picture of my pizza as I was very hungry. I did a Make your own pizza the Mod size with cheese, pepperoni, black olives, and bacon. It was very good and I like the fact that the crust is thin, but not too thin. I also ordered a Mod size Greek salad for work which was very good and I had a Prickly Pear Lemonade to drink which was very refreshing. We sat outside as it was a nice day and everyone enjoyed their meal

My family and I love this new mod pizza location! Employees are friendly, restaurant and restrooms are always clean, and service is rather quick considering their pizzas literally pile up! The parking lot gets a bit busy considering they share with Starbucks, but you could park on the side of the bank and walk in the back door if the front is full. If you haven't had mod, definitely have the pink drink! I literally can't think of the name. I'll come back to edit my review when I Google it ! Also huge plus that all of the calories are clearly written on all menu items ! Super helpful for those of us who need it! We come here weekly now because we love it so much.

We have never been to Mod Pizza, but when one opened up near our home, we decided it was time to try it. We had been told it was the "Subway" of pizza joints. It was precisely that. Who couldn't love a place where you can design your own pizza pie or salad? We arrived on a Friday night around 5:30 pm. Perfect time as it wasn't busy quite yet. By the time we finished, it was after 6 pm, and it was starting to get busy. If you have trouble making up your mind on what kind of pizza you want or had too rough a day to make a lot of choices, you can pick from one of their pre-thought-out combinations. As the strongly opinionated person I am, I choose to design my pizza. We walked up to the counter, much like you would other fast-casual sub sandwich places. I picked my pizza base, an 11-inch crust, one of two sizes you can choose from. The other option is a 6-inch kids' size. The 11-inch is about the size of a large dinner plate. So it can be considered a personal-size pizza or just perfect for sharing with the love of your life or your best friend. The crust comes in an original "thin" size, a mega-thick crust, or a cauliflower crust for those keto lovers out there. I chose the original, as did my husband. I then had a major decision to make. What kind of sauce? You have plenty to choose from, including a classic red sauce, a white sauce, and pesto. I went with the classic red sauce. I loaded mine up with a few kinds of meat like pepperoni, salami, and sausage and had them throw on some olives and mushrooms to make it appear that I'm eating healthy veggies. Who could forget the cheese? The mozzarella was my choice. Once I was satisfied with my pickings, the kind staff slid my pie into an oven, and about 5 mins later, voila. Fresh, hot pizza that was really good. You can opt for zushing it up a bit at the end and add some extra sauces on top to gild the lily. I ordered an Italian side salad with my pizza to make it appear that I was making healthy choices since I certainly didn't go that way with my pie. Besides the pizzas, you can also design your own salad or choose from one of their pre-designed offerings. Now let's talk about portions here. You would think a personal pizza and a side salad would be the perfect offering. My husband and I each ordered our own pizza and our own side salad. Why did we do that? The staff packs these items full. There is no skimping going on here. We should have shared a pizza, and each got a salad, or shared a salad, and each got a pizza. Either way, we still would have taken home leftovers. Then don't forget the no-name cakes for dessert. Their usual offering is simply called a no-name cake and is their version of a Ding Dong cake. Since it is fall, they also had a pumpkin no-name cake that was more of a spice cake than a pumpkin cake. Both were wonderful. Just an extra bit of indulgence to finish off the meal. Mod Pizza has other offerings like breadsticks, but that would have done us in. There are plenty of options here for your hunger level, and it's all good and fresh. There are plenty of packets of parmesan and pepper flakes at the drink counter to top off your food and take-out boxes to grab for your leftovers. This location is new, clean, had a reasonable noise level, so you can enjoy your meal in peace and talk to your companions or yourself if you are dining alone. The staff were pleasant and helpful and won't judge you for loading up your pizza and salad. No judging here. That's the beauty of Mod Pizza, it's one price no matter how many toppings you add. Just know that a pizza will only hold so much weight before you have a mess on your hands, so choose wisely. We enjoyed Mod Pizza and will definitely have it on the rotation for area restaurant options.

MOD Pizza and fountain drink with the good ice! I was too hungry to take the picture first and it was soooo worth it!

I love MOD pizza! I mean how can you not love a pizza created from your heart and belly?! Lol or you can just order off the wall! The staff at this MOD is always friendly. The order line can back up but the pizza always comes out fast, hot and crispy. I create my pizza but they have a good selection of aptly named pizzas to choose from which you can alter to your liking. They also have a terrific selection of salads. My only complaint (if you can call it a complaint because it is not at all about the food) is that I wish their mini side salad was priced as such. I love a side salad with my pizza and at nearly $8 for the side salad, a MOD pizza, side salad (mini), and a drink, you're looking at close to $25. I usually eat in and the dining room is always clean and stocked with peppers and parmesan cheese and they have the good ice! If you know, you know! If you're looking for quick delicious pizza and salad, MOD is a great option! I only take away 1 star because it can get pricey.

Love, love love the pizza here! Fresh ingredients and you get to add anything they have on the bar. Crust choices are regular, Cauliflower and gluten free. My favorite is the Cauliflower and it crisps up nicely. They have red sauce, spicy red sauce and white sauce. I like to get white sauce with chicken, mushrooms, Canadian bacon and pineapple, very eclectic and tasty. Try it with Fig sauce and it's a great mix of sweet and tart. My other favorite is red sauce, pepperoni, sausage, bacon, ground beef, mushrooms, onions, black Olives, spicy red peppers, garlic, rosemary and oregano. Get Sirrancha or ranch to dip in. The no name cakes are fresh and chocolate and individually wrapped. Nice beverage selection with fountain drinks, old-fashioned lemonade made with pure cane sugar, blackberry drink, sweet and unsweetened fresh tasting tea. No plastic containers, compostable containers and great service from everyone. Outdoor sitting area is a bonus.

I had the make your own--got sufficient amount of toppings of my choice . I almost broke a tooth on something hard and crunchy however! The pizzas are okay not great but reasonably quick from making to serving. We waited longer in line to order than actually to get our food--$65 for 3 Mod pizzas, basic salad of just lettuce & tomato & 2 fountain drinks--seems kind of pricey for such bland food!

No Name Cake Is my favorite!

We were warmly welcomed by our waiter, who seated us at a table with a lovely view of the river. We ordered the Funghi pizza to share between two people. The pizza was fresh, crispy, straight out of the oven, piping hot, and so delicious. I'd rate it an 8.5/10. The fresh mushrooms paired perfectly with the truffle, creating a rich and earthy flavor. The caramelized onions added just the right touch of sweetness, making the pizza perfectly balanced. I ordered the Sweet Texas Heat pizza--white sauce, applewood smoked bacon, Calabrian pepper, fresh basil, hot honey. It sounds like a whole experience, right? Sweet, spicy, smoky... all the things. But it was not giving Texas... or heat. Biggest issue? Overcooked. And when thin crust is overcooked, it's a wrap. Dry, brittle, no life left in it. The pictures don't lie. Flavor-wise, I could tell there was potential in that combo, but I couldn't get past the dryness. Once that texture is off, the whole thing falls apart. And for $35? I was definitely left wanting. Now in all fairness--the side salad? Very, very good. Fresh, crisp, well done. But let's be honest... I wasn't paying $35 for a salad. I did see some great reviews, which is why I chose this spot, so don't let me be the final word. Try it for yourself. But me? I won't be back.
