We all know that these fast-fired pizza restaurants are popping out of nowhere! I am sure most of you have heard of their competitors, "Pieology", "Blaze", "PizzaRev", and "Blast". And if you haven't, you probably don't get out very much! But out of all of them, where does "MOD Pizza" rank in the ratings. Well I will tell you from my experience, they get it done the right way. And giving a place a solid five-star rating says a lot about a large restaurant chain. "MOD Pizza" was founded in Seattle, WA back in 2008. It almost seems as if everything good comes out of Seatte; Starbucks, Amazon, Costco, Microsoft, and Nordstrom just to name a few. And MOD Pizza is no exception. Ever since their birth into the competitive build-your-own pizza market, they have made their pies absolutely perfect. The first time I actually tried their pizza was at a private Yelp event in June 2016 at their Rocklin, CA location. This is actually the first MOD Pizza to open in the greater Sacramento area; the second being in the Arden area (as of late-2016) and more are on the way. The acronym "MOD" in the company's name stands for "Made on Demand." What sets them apart from their competitors is that they use organic dough and unique ingredients that are cooked in roughly 3 minutes using 800-degree stone ovens. The Rocklin location that I am reviewing offers fairly spacious seating on the inside while offering additional seating on the outside. Their menu includes 10 of their own creations while you could customize your own exactly how you want it. There are also 3 different sizes to choose from; mini, original (MOD), and large. Additionally, you have your choice of an original or gluten free crust while adding any type of sauce you want (red, white, pesto, BBQ, or garlic rub). You can then add a variety of different cheeses, meats, and produce while finishing it off with several different spices and dressings. I ended up going with one of their own pizzas in the regular MOD size, "The Dominic", This pie consisted of white sauce, asiago cheese, chopped basil, red onions, sliced tomatoes, and mild sausage. I also added artichoke hearts, bacon, and balsamic fig glaze as extra options. And the sweet thing about this is that you can add as many toppings as you'd like at no extra charge! My lady decided on building her own pizza complete with pepperoni, pineapples, red onions, and jalapeños. We then both decide on their freshly squeezed lemonades; she goes for the original lemonade while I opt for their Marion Blackberry Lemonade. Since they were busy, from the time I paid to the time we got our pizzas took roughly 10 minutes. It is a slightly longer wait due to 3-minute cooking time but this process assures that everything is cooked accordingly while the crust is not flimsy when holding it. And once we got our pizzas, I was in absolute heaven. I have to say, MOD Pizza is the best of the best! The crust was crispy (while not burnt on the bottom) and as big as the slices were, everything held up with ease. The flavors were on point while not being at all greasy or salty. And surprisingly, we both finished our MOD pizzas while dining in! They were THAT good! Overall, MOD Pizza is my favorite chain restaurant when it comes to the fast-fired pizza market while Blaze and Pieology are the runners-up. The prices are very affordable (only $9.00 for a MOD size) and portions are HUGE. And if you're trying to watch the carbs, they carry a nice variety of salads. Additionally, the carry Cinnamon Strips and Garlic Strips as well as hand spun MOD milkshakes (in vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry). Finally, you can order their amazing lemonades (which is what we had) as well as regular fountain drinks, iced teas, beer, and wine. My rating for MOD Pizza, a unanimous five-stars! read more

I am in love these fast fired pizzas's! This amazing establishment has a build-you-own pizza concept, or choose one of their creative concoctions. What is great, is you can select from 3 different sizes, which is different from the other do-it-yourself places, and the price depends on the size of the pizza or salad you choose. They also offer sweet dessert pizza's. They looked delish. I decided to make my own monstrous creation: Red sauce and pesto, cheese, chicken, chicken sausage, tons of veggies and spinach. The toppings are numerous and you can get as many as you like- I love that! Warning- if you get too much on top- the pizza might sag in the middle, but who cares, it all tastes delicious. Many kudos to MOD for offering a chicken sausage/pepperoni- it was spicy with a nice bite and it was my favorite topping. Not many places offer an alternative to beef or pork. The crust was crispy but not overdone, and the hot ovens made the pizza's come out quick. Also offered were some amazing flavored iced teas, fruity lemonades, referred to as "liquid crack" and soda's. They have beer and wine, as well as handmade milkshakes. MOD Pizza is conveniently located in a large shopping center, it was easy to find off Hwy 80 and Sierra College Blvd exit. Some very cool things of note: The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. One of the owners was kind enough to explain the concept and menu, to make for easier ordering. Unfortunately our local MOD Pizza has really gone downhill in recent months. We ordered a pepperoni pizza and asked for triple pepperoni and received four slices of pepperoni and cheese missing on the pizza. Ordered a lucia with garlic, basil and red onions. No onions or basil on pizza. This was an internet order and I did not check order before driving home. Called store and asked for manager, spoke to him and he said I would have to comeback with receipts to prove that I made the purchase. He also let me know that they are busy and under the circumstances they are doing as good as they can. Both answers inadequate, looking for a new pizza place in Rocklin anyone have a suggestion? Talked to owner who listened to our concerns and seamed very sincere. Came back in to store today, pizza was made well and service was good. Absolutely gross! I've been here before and loved it, came here for a bite, all the condiments were empty. We ordered a salad and the salad mix was what looked like and tastes like a few day old soggy spring mix. The soda counter was covered with water and soda, the straw container had trash and food pieces in it. We found a table only to find that Each and Every table was sticky and covered with food. The pizza was mediocre, for one pizza, one ceaser salad and one fountain drink it came out to be $28 without tip. When it came to cleaning up our table, BOTH trash cans were full to the brim and over flowing, it was disgusting. Overall, won't be coming back here. I've got to make sure I cover those right quick: 1. Three pizza sizes! There's a mini, the standard mod size, and a medium size that would definitely fit two people. Heck, the mod size would feed two people. Or one very hangry yelpette named Jenny P. 2. Delicious GF crust! Tastes so good I didn't miss wheat too terribly, and it comes in as big a size as the others. GF crust has a tendency to be kind of small and flimsy, but not here! Yum! 3. A truly humungous, STACKED portion of pizza. More filling than Blast and Blaze, for sure. They do not skimp on toppings, helpings, and portions here. Nope. 4. That figgy balsamic drizzle at the end, though. Do not forget it! Hopefully that helps you make a decision on which pizza modification joint you hit up. Let me start off by saying that I am not a Karen. I enjoy gas station hot dogs and nachos. I just spent $75 and ate a pizza with cheese so strong that it made my stomach turn. I also ordered a salad. The lettuce was brown and the dressing was so sweet that I couldn't finish it. I gave it one star because the staff was nice-ish and they have good ice. I don't know what the heck took me so long to try a make your own pizza place, but I'm glad that my first time was at MOD. After agonizing over the menu and checking out their list of ingredients, I decided to make my own MOD pizza loaded with veggies (spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, basil, mushrooms, artichokes, olives, two types of garlic, roasted red peppers) and bacon. (Everything is better with bacon!) After a little wait, viola... my personal creation was done! It was so good, I inhaled the whole pie against my better judgement. But I couldn't stop until the last bite. The line moves pretty quickly and the staff is stupendous! They're very generous with ingredients, almost too generous judging by my HEFTY pizza. I was fortunate enough to attend a Yelp event as a guest which was hosted by MOD. This was my first time to MOD Pizza and I did not know what to expect. I was greeted by one of the staff members and he explained my pizza options. There were plenty of pizzas to choose from and I decided to build my own pizza. I ordered a MOD sized pizza which was similar to a small pizza at other pizza restaurants. I love meat on my pizza and I added every type of meat topping on my pizza. I also added several different vegetable toppings on the pizza. You are able to get unlimited amount of toppings at no additional charge which was a plus. I was only able to eat half of the pizza due to the large amount of toppings I placed on my pizza and I took the rest home. Overall, my pizza was good. The employees were attentive and friendly! I ordered a glass of wine and it came in a smaller glass than expected. The glass was not a wine glass which was disappointing. I've eaten at this location 2 other times and the first time was good the second time our pizzas were soggy and under cooked. Tonight the food was really good. My mod side salad was great. My mega dough pizza was good could have been a little crispier, I asked for well done or crispy. I wasn't asked if it was sufficient like the locations in Fresno usually make sure it's to the customers liking. This particular experience tonight was ridiculous. My mother and I had been driving for 3hrs and stopped in about 15-20min before closing at 10pm. There was a large party (prob 12) of well dressed guests. Looked like they just got out of church or something I'd guess. Anyway we got our food sat down and it was about 5min to 10pm. Immediately at 10pm the 2 female employees slam stacking chairs on top of tables. They were honestly being as loud and obnoxious as they could possibly be. They slammed chairs so loud behind my mom it made her jump out of her seat. I get the restaurant closes at 10pm but have some common sense. give customers until 10:15 or 10:20. We felt like we were being thrown out and the large party dispersed quickly asked for Togo boxes and stood outside in the parking lot finishing eating. This is definitely a protocol manager/owner issue. This is my suggestion. At 930 start asking customers to dine in on the patio? If I was the owner I'd fire those 2 for doing what they did tonight and god forbid someone with ptsd was in the establishment when they started doing this. I was embarrassed for the owner. This place was pretty good. I came here recently for the first time and the experience was average. I tried inquiring about a non grain crust option and the staff weren't really sure, there cauliflower option does contain a rice product and so does the gluten free option- according to the ingredients that I asked to read. I ended up buying my kids a regular pepperoni and sausage pizza and mine was the gluten free- it tasted great. I do think my pizza was a tad over cooked, it was burnt on the crust... maybe gluten free crust does that, I'm honestly not sure, and if so... no big deal. The only thing that I do wish... if there was more topping options. The opinions in my opinion were pain and general- nothing different. I like different, it gives more fun. I've come to this location a few times now as well as other MOD locations. This one is closest to where I live, so I've been to this one the most. The pizza is still as great as it always was, with a nice thin crisp crust and all the fresh toppings you wanna add. I never end up with the same pizza, cause of the different combinations of topping I try. I haven't made a bad one yet. But after trying this location out enough times, I see some areas for improvement. When I'm in line instructing the staff of what sauce and toppings I'd like on my pizza, many times the restaurant here is so loud with people noise, it's very hard to hear clearly the staff or to give instructions without yelling. The staff may need to be aware the customer can't hear your questions, so they just need to speak louder. Also, when the toppings are applied to the pizza, please make sure that the toppings are evenly distributed over the whole round of pizza, as many times they just add the topping to the center of the pizza ... I'd like my sausages to the edge so that I get a sausage in every bite, not just the middle. Granted, the staff is happy to put toppings to the edge once I've told them, but for other customers not as interactive with the staff, you may have some disappointed customers, so the solution is just have the staff spread the toppings evenly over the WHOLE pizza. Keep in mind, all these little things are addressed by the staff, so I get my pizza my way, once I tell them, so that's a good thing. One just needs to be a little more involved with the pizza making process if you're a picky pizza person like me. One other thing came up on my last visit, and that was I observed the use of the black marker pens used to put notes on the parchment paper that goes under the pizza when served. Many of these notes end up in spots on the paper that end up UNDER the pizza. I really don't want to have black ink leached onto my pizza due to the oils from the pizza releasing the ink. I asked the corporate office about this issue, and their response was, "the ink was non-toxic". Well, toxic or not, I don't want black ink on my pizza! Simple solution, have the staff not write with the marker on areas of the paper that will be under the pizza when you serve it. Just write on the corner areas. Overall, I'm still giving 5 stars cause these issues can all be solved by me keeping an eye on my pizza and where they write on the paper. The staff is very understanding of my concerns. Here's one tip I'll give that will make your MOD pizza easier to eat. When you get to the cashier, instruct them to cut your pizza into six pieces instead of the standard four, cause the smaller 6 cut pieces will fit in your mouth a whole lot better just due to the angle of the pointy end of the pizza slice. I hope my review gives customers tips on a better MOD pizza experience. I'll return for more pizza! read more

One star is too generous. I'm not going back to this MOD EVER! Topping bar was very messy. Several different toppings were co-mingled together in the containers. Anchovies were mixed in with the sausage so imagine my surprise when I bit into my pizza and tasted anchovies rather than sausage. My pizza was out of the oven and ready to be cut and boxed but for some reason the MOD employee who made my pizza started tampering with it. He was wearing white gloves and he was putting his fingers in my pizza. I asked what he was doing and he said he was "rearranging the toppings." I told him to STOP and to just CUT and BOX my pizza. Beginning in the early 80's there was a sitcom, that took place in a bar. It's theme song included the words, "where everybody knows your name" Well that's a concept that I love to experience and choose the places that I do business with when they make me FEEL that way. What can I say about the Rocklin MOD pizza location. Well, it started out with one of the workers there talking to me, then always calling me by name whenever I entered the door. Then, with the other workers similing and being cheerful whenever I entered the establashment, to a temporary manager MAKING me get a Milk Shake (yum, yum), to the New Manager recoqnizing me from the Arden Store (and calling me by name), to several of the workers remembering me as the guy who takes all of the pictures, to a couple of the workers "ASKING" to be in my pictures and giving me permission to post them, to one worker telling me that she see me taking pictures all of the time, "Where do you post them?" See, I'm Old School and can spend my money anywhere, but when people Appreciate that I spend it with them, THAT's the place I want to go too!! Yes, another DIY pizza. This style of semi-fast food is rampant. By now, y'all know the routine - pick your toppings or one of a few predesigned. The differentiation is no longer the concept but the ingredients (quality and quantity), price, size options, and quality of overall cook. Here's the deal: this is a chance to direct your own pizza show, getting it done your way (DIY). Pick your dough (regular or gluten free), choose your size, and choose a sauce and toppings. If not feeling adventurous or question your ability to blend flavors, there are a few pre-designed choices too (aka "classic"). For me, what brought MOD to the top of my "go to again" list was the option of 3 sizes and the completeness of cooking (I don't mind a little black if that means it's cooked through) ... not doughy or soggy in the middle. If you've read any of my previous "pizza" reviews you'd see that I have "pizza issues" in my search of that pizza pie that hits my (specific) mark. When it comes to pizza, I'm a minimalist and prefer the subtle flavor combinations over the loaded top heavy mammoth pies. I don't like soggy pizza pie My choice: MOD size, regular crust, in the seasonal "Cooper" style - red sauce, fresh basil, mozzarella, roasted asparagus, ricotta, a mild sausage, red onions, and roasted red peppers. I feel like everywhere I look these "build your own pizza" places are popping up everywhere and now they have hit one of the newest shopping centers in Rocklin next to Green Acres, Walmart and Bass Pro. I have to say that I have tried my fair share of these kinds of pizza places and I think MOD Pizza is my favorite for a few reasons but the most important (to me) is that they properly cooked the crust. It was nice and crispy and brown on the bottom. They didn't rush it out of the oven with it still being soggy and undercooked. Yay! They have some pre-made pizza ideas on the wall on your way to order, but I decided to build my own. They have gluten free crust, but they only have one "regular crust" available so I chose that. I added mozzarella, mushrooms, black olives, spinach, red sauce, artichokes, feta and a pesto drizzle. I loved the addition of the artichokes, but I would pass on the spinach next time. Instead of putting it on top of the pizza after it cooks, they put it above the sauce but under the cheese. It made it hot and soggy and weird. All my other toppings were good, but I wish they had some more cheese and sauce selections. They really only had a few. Seating was plentiful and they serve a few beers and wine. They also brew their own tea as well so I had to try their Caramelized Pear Tea. It was pretty good and something different. It had good flavor and wasn't too sweet. This is like many of the "make your own" pizza places except you go though the same line and can make your own salad too if you like. My man liked the $2.60 refillable floats. I liked my pizza although I was a bit burned. I notice on the web site if you don't like the way you built your pizza you could get a do over....this is an interesting concept. My kids were in the mood for pizza while driving through the area, so we pulled off I-80 for this place. When we walked in, it had a different feel from standard pizza places. You can choose the standard, "named" pizzas, but you walk through and ask for your ingredients more like a sub shop or a Chipotle and can customize anything. Then they cook your your pizza in a wood-fire. They have 3 different sizes of pizza, and the really nice part is they don't charge you any more for the toppings, you can add whatever you want, as much as you want, no problem. And the ingredients are all fresh! I have to mention the employees before I go into the food. Everyone was very helpful, patient, and took time to explain how to order. The guy who cuts the pizza at the end of the line was a riot, he put on a show for us, flipping spatulas in the air and slicing with gusto. He made our day and the kids enjoyed watching him. Alright, now for the pizza. As a family with 3 kids, I would expect to hear at least one complaint- nope, not a one. The kids were even asking to try our fancier pizzas that they wouldn't normally touch. So the pizza is kid-approved, but my fellow foodies want to know, is it adult-approved? Oh, yes, and we consider ourselves serious foodies! The crust was fantastic, not starchy or heavy, just right. It was that wood-fired type, soft with a little chew and a bit of crispy char. The sauces were all excellent, we tried the red sauce, the pesto, and the BBQ sauce. And the toppings were perfect. They had a variety of interesting cheeses to please discriminating palates. This was a standard build your own pizza type restaurant. There was nothing "stand out" about this place in comparison to it's peers. I felt that despite having my pizza topped with pesto drizzle, garlic and having ranch dipping sauce, it still really left something to be desired. The flavor was just...lackluster at best. I can't say that I'd return to a MOD pizza, as I definitely prefer the flavors and texture of Blaze Pizza (although that could just be because I'm so familiar with their options that I know what to expect when I add ingredients to my pizza). My wife put in the order by phone. I went in at the time they said it would be ready. There is a stand for online orders so I looked for our order there. Nothing. I waited a few minutes and our name was never called so I asked the guy putting take out orders together how much longer. He couldn't find our order so he went to the computer and tried to "look us up in the system." He said we had no order in the system. I called my wife and verified the information. I then went to the order counter and talked to the person there. She said we didn't have an order. I text my wife the situation and then started to leave. Suddenly they "found our order." It was already made and it was cold. No apology. They just "found it." Customer service is bad, the pizza is expensive, and it's just "okay" pizza. Don't waste your time or money. read more

Very nice location! It was very clean and everything was well run. I like how they have different sizes here unlike Blaze or Pieology. I still got the regular Mod size and let me tell you... they do not go easy on the toppings. Whenever I go to Pieology they ask way do a little sprinkle of everything but they go hard at Mod which I LOVE. As for the taste... the crust in my opinion is the most important part and this one was lacking a little something like Blaze has or Pieology. It was still a pretty dang good pizza though. read more
