Lobster tacos - bland and rubbery. Corn pizza - plain, soggy, and bland. Branzino - also not flavorful. Texture was also a little rubbery. Birria lasagna - dense. Ceviche - rubbery. Something is terribly wrong with the texture and flavor of the cooking here.
Came here on a Friday for a team lunch, and it was easy for us to get seated. We ordered chips and guacamole as well as the cauliflower for the table. For $10, the portion of the chips and guac is quite small in my opinion. The cauliflower came with 3 salsas, with one being super spicy. For my main, I got the birria lasagna, which was recommended by the waitress. I thought the flavor was quite mild and lacking, even with the sauce. The birria was tender but I felt like I could not really taste it. It is quite heavy despite it looking small in portion size, so it should fill you up. I didn't really find any of the dishes memorable here. Service was decent.
GREAT SERVICE! 4.3 Our most recent stay in the SOMA District brought us to Modí, an Italian-Mexican fusion restaurant, specifically inspired by Tulum, tucked beneath the beautiful Salesforce Park. The concept immediately intrigued us, so we made a reservation. Its location was perfect for a leisurely 10-minute walk from our hotel. We've dined at Italian-Japanese restaurants in Japan and Italian-Korean restaurants in Hong Kong, but until now, we had yet to experience Italian-Mexican cuisine. We were warmly greeted by the host and seated in the semi-enclosed outdoor patio area. Since it was an early dinner at 5:30 p.m., we had our choice of seating. Three other parties were already dining, including a group of ten, and it appeared that everyone was seated outside. Perhaps the indoor dining area had not yet opened for service. Regardless, it was a beautiful day, and dining al fresco was the perfect choice. Our server, Tomàs, was exceptional. Friendly, energetic, and engaging, he added to the restaurant's festive atmosphere. Since it was our first visit to Modí, he took the time to explain the concept and offer his recommendations. He also spoke warmly of the chef, describing him as a wonderful man who takes great pride in his cooking. Here is what we ordered: Chips & Basil Guacamole ~ Freshly warmed, house-made corn chips accompanied by basil guacamole and topped with Parmesan cheese. This was some of the freshest, chunkiest guacamole I've ever tasted. Although basil was mentioned in the description, I couldn't detect any basil incorporated into the guacamole itself; there was simply a single basil leaf resting on top as a garnish. Tomàs also brought us two dipping sauces, one of which he called Morita chili salsa. Both were absolutely delicious and a great accompaniment to the chips. Branzino Achiote Pesto Fusion (gluten-free option) ~ Butterflied grilled branzino, with one half marinated in achiote and the other in arugula pesto, served alongside roasted potatoes and grilled nopales. Nopales are the edible pads of the prickly pear cactus. They had a wonderful citrusy tang that really enlivened the dish. The potatoes were lightly salted with beautifully crisp edges. Because the fish was butterflied and grilled flat, it was slightly overcooked, but the accompanying sauces helped restore some moisture. Birria Lasagna ~ Layers of birria beef, traditional lasagna pasta, tomato sauce, and creamy béchamel, baked together with melted mozzarella. Fusion cuisine has existed for centuries, evolving through colonization, trade routes, migration, and the exchange of culinary traditions. At Modí, the most apparent merging of cultures comes through the combination of ingredients and the restaurant's creative presentation. Overall, we found the food enjoyable. As exceptional as the guacamole was, however, I was hoping for a more pronounced fusion of flavors and ingredients rather than simply a basil leaf placed atop the dish. The service was the BEST, thanks to Tomàs, and the atmosphere was wonderfully festive. On our next visit, we'd love to explore some of the heartier meat dishes and sample more of the appetizers. Perhaps dining with a small group would be ideal, allowing everyone to share and experience a wider selection of dishes while giving us a better opportunity to discover Modí's interpretation of Italian-Mexican fusion.
FOOD: 4 SERVICE: 5 AMBIANCE: 4 VALUE: 4 We came to SF for a recovery weekend. We found Modi on a restaurant reservation site, and we were intrigued by the ItMex fusion concept. Since we were staying in SOMA, it was about a 10 minutes walk from our hotel. The restaurant is under the Salesforce Park on the 2nd St side. They have indoor seating and an outside enclosed patio. We sat in the patio area, and being enclosed it was pleasant. There are heat lamp everywhere should the chill set in. Our waiter, Tomas, was friendly, warm and welcoming. And since it was our first visit, he recommended some of the best dishes on the menu. We took Tomas' recommendations and ordered: Chips & Basil Guacamole - freshly made guacamole with basil, served with homemade corn chips. Very crunchy chips made scooping up the guacamole a sensory pleasure. Birria Lasagna - lasagna made with layers of Birria beef instead of traditional ground beef. The beef was more like shredded beef. This is really more traditional Italian than than a fusion dish. Branzino Achiote Pesto Fusion - this was my wife's dish, a whole Branzino marinated 1/2 Achiote and 1/2 Pesto and grilled. The Achiote was the better tasting half, but the fish was a little dry and boney. What made Modi standout is the service. Our waters were constantly refilled. Tomas checked in with us several times. We will come back and try some of their other dishes.
The Mexican-Italian fusion menu here is relatively creative, and while the dishes were pretty good overall, I didn't find any of them to be too memorable. There wasn't a single dish that I was clamoring to order again. The pork on the al pastor pizza was a bit dry, and I wish there had more of the green salsa drizzled on top. The birria lasagna was just average and the steak was a bit stringy. The outdoor patio setting was charming and atmospheric. The service was pretty good, though our waitress seemed a bit distracted.
I recently visited this fantastic restaurant at Salesforce with my best friend and colleagues. Despite the busy First Thursdays event, the lively atmosphere only enhanced the experience. We enjoyed lively conversations while savoring three appetizers and two main courses: squid ink spaghetti with clams and chorizo, and a delicious birria lasagna paired with poblano pizza topped with prosciutto. We wrapped up the evening sharing their signature churro tiramisu. The flavors were exceptional, showcasing a bold and well-executed fusion. The staff had a charming European flair that added to the ambiance. I highly recommend this restaurant for an unforgettable dining experience.
this spot was walking distance to the office, so we came here for a team lunch. i was curious to try italian-mexican, as i don't think i've seen a concept like this before. the waitress was very kind and efficient :) and we liked the covered outdoor space. we tried a variety of dishes, which we found to appear italian but were actually made with mexican ingredients. the branzino and ceviche were tasty - and the other dishes were quite creative, although not particularly standouts. lasagna should be made with traditional pasta sheets haha, i don't think the corn tortilla texture works with the dish. all in all, a solid lunching experience, though we enjoyed the atmosphere more than the food.
Went with a group of 8. I was surprised to see that they had a group even bigger than that at an other table that they were able to accommodate for. Service was phenomenal despite the chaos of both tables. Our server was nice, funny, and very very efficient. Just for the service I would bring a big group here again. We for a bunch of food family style and this was the way to go. For the appetizer, everyone loved the cactus and the Cesar salad. Both were unique spin offs from their original dishes. The elotes were a close second. For entrees we got double of the lasagna and the ravioli. I think majority liked the lasagna best and couple of the people liked the ravioli better. The pizza diabla was not spicy alone, but it came with 3 side sauces and chili flakes that completed the dish. The sauces were delicious and hit the pizza home. For dessert we were disappointed with the tiramisu churro. The churro tasted like a regular churro. Not much tiramisu about it. However for a regular churro, it was good. Couple of people loved the mousse and the cheesecake was standard. I think this is a great place for appetizers and entrees. May want to get dessert elsewhere but this was not bad enough to knock off a star. One last thing. For a place this big and busy, I did find it odd that they only had 1 bathroom. It was an all gender bathroom so everyone used the same 1 bathroom, which created a decent line.
After two incredible visits (one for happy hour with the #YEShusband, and one for a team dinner), Modi has officially earned its spot in my regular rotation. Located on the street level of the Salesforce Transit Center, it offers a great covered patio and a cozy interior. On our first visit, we sat at the bar and went in knowing we would want to try a few unique items. The bartender, Jiro, was friendly and knowledgeable--he was also very accommodating when we asked him to put the Giants game on the TV. -Sueño De Amalfi (Tito's Vodka, Limoncello, Agave, Lime, Basil): Lemony and strong! This is a great starter drink since it's alcohol forward, and the flavors are all potent, -Dulce Vita (Yotobi Pina Mezcal, Passion Fruit, Aperol, Lime): The #YEShusband is a big passionfruit fan, and really enjoyed this one! The mezcal is a nice balance to the tart passionfruit and aperol. -Aperol Spritz: Refreshing! This was a perfect drink to sip while also enjoying the decadent food! -Chips & Salsa: complimentary; these were good and I really enjoyed the salsa verde. -Fresh Oysters (Daily selection of locally sourced oysters, served with house-made mango mezcal mignonette and watermelon sorbet): Exceptionally fresh. The mango mezcal mignonette and watermelon sorbet are creative, delicious pairings. Jiro gave us a side shot of mezcal which complemented the mignonette- perks of sitting at the bar! -Trompitos Al Pastor (Tender Wagyu beef in soft tortillas, topped with gorgonzola cream, arugula, and pickled red onions): So flavorful and tasty! I would have preferred if they layered the pineapple with the meat instead of one piece at the wide end of the skewer. Would still order again. -Tacos Lobster (Succulent lobster, creamy avocado, crisp slaw, lime crema, fresh cilantro, all wrapped in a warm tortilla): Worth the splurge. They don't skimp on the lobster, and the lime crema ties it all together perfectly. -Birria Lasagna (Layers of tender birria beef, traditional lasagna pasta, tomato sauce, and creamy béchamel, all baked with mozzarella): If you can only order one item, make this THE ONE. The birria is tender and packed with flavor; the pasta is on the thinner side, yet still keeps the dish together; and THE SAUCE...just go ahead and order extra and thank me later. -Churro Tiramisu: We don't usually order dessert, but glad that we ordered this! This is actually four small churros served over a whipped sweet cream. A perfect way to end our meal! Bringing a work group here was a total win. Tomas took excellent care of us, narrowing down the best dishes for the table. I went with the Birria Lasagna again (no regrets!) and the whole team left happy. Huge thanks to the staff for helping me score some major brownie points with my coworkers! Looking forward to visiting again soon!
Came here for lunch on a Saturday - definitely less busy than a weekday and we were seated right away. We started off with the guacamole, which was really good. It had flakes of Parmesan cheese, which was unique. I got the shrimp tacos, and wasn't too impressed. I think there were some sauces that weren't listed on the menu, and they were not very good. The shrimp was also kinda flavorless. I would definitely pass on the tacos here. The restaurant itself is spacious and really pretty, and the service was good. Overall a really unique cuisine and I would come back and try some of the other dishes!
The vibe was great! Mixed Mexican and Italian. The service and workers were amazing with the food and the hospitality
Meh, it's decent. Ordered: Caesar salad, parmigiana nopales, chicken, churro tiramisu Pro: parmigiana nopales and salad were both rockstars!!!!! I loved every bite of the fresh salad. The parmigiana was an interesting take on eggplant parm, quite lovely but not sure I'd order it again but enjoyed something new. Cons: the chicken!!!!!! Dry as a bone and sooooo much lemon I puckered. The potatoes were excellent though. The bathroom gets an exceptional...exceptionally DISGUSTING!!!!!!!!! Legit, a well toilet would be cleaner. It's horrific. Interesting concept of Italian/chinese, not sure I'd hang again.
Excellent drinks and good food. Italian Mexican fare. We enjoyed the Prosciutto pizza - light and freshly baked Steak slider Chicken skewers Guacamole Manhattan with smoke Mezcal cocktail Aperol spritz There is an indoor (smallish) and outdoor patio space. Staff attentive.

Modi is an Italian-Mexican fusion restaurant at the ground level of San Francisco's Salesforce Transit Center. The vibe is fun and social. Came here on a Friday night at around 5:30 and we were seated right away! The vibes are fun & cute! They have heaters everywhere so you'll be nice and warm the whole time. The service was great in the beginning, we ordered our drinks and received them in less than 5 minutes. The food also came out very fast. But as we were finishing our dinner, the waiter became scarce and when we finally got his attention and put in another drink order, it took about 15-20 minutes to come in. Kind of a buzzkill having to wait for so long. On to the food! Lobster Tacos: These were nice and meaty, my husband loved these & he gets a side of the chipotle sauce to dip them in. Birria Lasagna: These were delicious, my favorite thing that we ordered. It had a lot of meat and flavor. Aztec Salad: This was just okay! I didn't like the polenta croutons that this was paired with. Trompitos Al Pastor: While these were tender, I feel like they didn't have much flavor. For the price point, I thought this place was just okay! I do like how the menu items are unique. I think that I would have given this place a 4/5 though if the service didn't falter towards the end. The place was not crowded, so there wasn't really an excuse for the poor service towards the end. read more
Beautiful decor, fun patio vibes. Come here for drinks and & corn only. The rest of the food was so bland. Ravioli didn't even taste like it had any salt, acid or heat. Scallop tacos were so fishy the smell was overwhelming. Service was scarce. Easy opportunities to elevate the food experience in my opinion. Just more seasoning and thoughtfulness in the dishes. Unlikely to return for dinner, probably will for drinks. read more

The food was excellent, service was outstanding, the owner Dario came our tables and introduced himself. He cares very much about the quality of his food. Most ingredients are imported from Italy. The ambiance was soft, trendy, an excellent blend of traditional but also hip. I highly recommend this restaurant intimate and groups. read more
Came here for the Valentines pre fixe menu which also happens to be my wife's birthday. The restaurant is clean and has nice style. The host was friendly and wished my wife a happy birthday. Our server was friendly but didn't know much about the pre fixe menu. Our salads were good, tasted fresh. For appetizers, we got the oysters and ceviche. Both were excellent and hit the spot. The only problem so far was the wait between each item being served. It was about 15-20 minutes between each and we ordered everything up front. Then our main dishes, the steak and chicken both came out lukewarm at best. Even our sides were mostly cold. We would've sent them back but we didn't have time because we had show tickets and it had already been 1.5 hours and our dessert was still waiting for us. We ended up taking them to go and even that took longer than it should. Overall, the worst Valentines / Birthday dinner we have ever had. Too bad because the food was tasty but you have to bring it out on time or what difference does it make? read more
A beautiful restaurant near salesforce. This is a fusion of Mexican and Italian food. The interior is just so gorgeous! We ordered the birria lasagna and spaghetti with chorizo and clams. I really like the concept of birria lasagna however it didn't blow me out of the water. I think it could be spicer and more flavorful to really add the Mexican touch. I think there is room for improvement. I did really enjoy the spaghetti with chorizo, I would order that again. Also, side note my drink had a bug in it. I had to request it to be remade and again another gnat flew into it. Idk if anything can be done with the gnat/bug issue. read more

Loved this restaurant. Andrea served us an amazing meal. We decided to trust him completely! Cocktails were super tasty. The branzino was amazing and the biggest surprise was the pizza! Everything blended together really well. Loved the branzino fusion and each dish was a great conversation piece! Ceviche was perfect and pulpo was a lovely addition. read more

We were excited about the opening of Modí, an interesting concept of Italian food with a Mexican twist. However, the food was a mixed bag. The best dish of the night was the tuna tostadas. Another popular "signature dish" was the birria lasagna. The steak we ordered medium rare came well done but was immediately corrected and a new steak was fired and cooked to our liking with no issues. Everyone that works there is still trying to figure things out and it shows. "A" for efforts! Probably a better happy hour spot! Love the bar area and the vibe! read more

Mexican/Italian fusion concept sounded interesting, so decided to try it for a Friday night dinner. Started with the Mediterranean ceviche mixto -- absolutely delicious. Great amount of seafood and really well balanced. Highly recommend!! Also ordered beef tartare con uovo fritto after seeing a lot of reviews. It was good with a nice presentation, but pretty standard overall. For mains, the spaghetti chorizo and clams was divine. Squid ink spaghetti worked perfectly with the clams and spicy chorizo. So flavorful and definitely a standout dish. Highly recommend. Cocktail selection was solid too! Ordered espresso martini and it was well made. Had to have two! Service was excellent and the vibe was lively. It can get loud if seated near big groups since the sound carries, but it adds to the vibrant (friday) atmosphere. Loved the color scheme and overall design. Didn't get to try the pizza this time, but they looked great and seemed very popular! read more

Food was kind of mid. I will say the portions were pretty large but overall the food wasn't just ok. The octopus was the best dish and the ceviche was very fresh. But the pizza was unmemorable and slightly soggy. Decor was cute and the Mexican/italian mix seemed interesting but unfortunately it did not make the mark. The service was good and the staff was nice enough. read more

Two words: BIRRIA LASAGNA. GET IT. It's hella bomb! Grand opening last week in the Salesforce Transit Center is Modí from the owners of Acquolina (North Beach). They have a third resto on the way (Italian-Japanese Fusion in Union Square). Modí is open for takeout, indoor dining, and dog-friendly outdoor dining. Rezzies on Resy. M E N U Italian-Mexican Fusion inspired by the chef-owner's heritage: Apps, salads, pasta, pizza, and entrees. Full bar. HH hasn't been rolled out yet but I was told it will be 3 pm - 5 pm (call to confirm). F O O D * Complimentary Chips & Salsa: https://tinyurl.com/5fnaju5e Standard thin tortilla chips with a bright, tangy salsa verde. * Birria Lasagna: Beef birria w/ traditional lasagna pasta, tomato sauce, mozzarella ($26): https://tinyurl.com/23thpvmm IMO, some restos attempt "fusion" to be trendy and the result? An identity crisis on a plate. BUT, this is THE perfect union of Mexican and Italian cuisine that makes sense. The stewed beef birria was meltingly soft and richly spiced (not too salty), generously layered between the tender pasta sheets with stretchy mozz cheese. Seasoned with Mexican spices, the creamy tomato sauce was flavorful and earthy. Even detected something that tasted like corn to emulate quesabirrria tacos. Hearty, comforting, and hella delicious. S E R V I C E Great service and hospitality from the owner(s) and staff - friendly, attentive, and prompt. Food arrived in less than 10 minutes. A M B I A N C E Tulum meets Mediterranean coast vibes with teals, golds, and greenery. Ample seating both indoors and outdoors. Front patio is covered and heated. P A R K I N G Take public transportation or a ride share on the weekdays. Easier street parking on Saturdays. Overall, the city has no shortage of excellent Mexican and Italian restos but Modí is bringing something new, seamlessly blending the two cuisines together....while offering great service and vibes. Def worth the visit. Get the Birria Lasagna! =) read more
Birria Lasagna is a must try! Very good service from start to finish. We were just walking by the restaurant and the food smelled so good. Boyfriend and I were intrigued by the fusion. I think this place is relatively new, and you can definitely tell. While everyone was pleasant, there is an air of chaos in this place. We got to the restaurant and were told we could be seated at a table, but on the way there were switched to the bar. When we turned to the bar it was full, so they had us stand to the side until the bar cleared out. The bar staff (particularly the man with the beard) were extremely attentive. All mistakes were resolved swiftly because of their service. They made our night worthwhile! The food was a mixed bag. We enjoyed the tuna tostadas, but the al pastor pizza dough had a slightly funky aftertaste. While the birria lasagna was delicious, we had to send it back initially because it came to us completely cold. The second one came very quickly thanks to the bar staff that I mentioned. We ordered the tiramisu churros for dessert. They were pretty doughy (likely frozen) and did not really deliver on the tiramisu side. All in all, would probably redo this place as a happy hour spot. I feel like the appetizers and drinks might be where they shine based on the vibes. read more

The decor inside is truly amazing, it's bright, vibrant, and super IG-worthy! I stopped in for just a drink and sat at the bar. The bartender was very friendly and conversational. I visited Modi's gorgeous space under Salesforce Park on a Saturday Night during their soft opening. The inside is bright and vibrant while their heated outdoor seating is darker and more relaxed. Started off with the Tacos Capesante e Funghi. The scallops could have been seared a bit longer and the scallop mushroom mix could have used some salt, but overall it was still a pleasant dish. The soft corn tortillas had a really nice homemade feel and really added a good earthiness to the tacos. The Birria Lasagna was very intriguing. It was super hearty and filling and I think the fusion of the slow cooked meat and a baked pasta really makes a lot of sense. It has the makings of a signature dish; really enjoyed this one. Dessert was a Churros Tiramisu that definitely didn't look like what I'd pictured in my head. It was more like churros with tiramisu-style dipping sauce. I have a weakness for churros so I'd be happy with the dish no matter what. The waiter, Dushan, was very kind and mentioned that their grand opening would be 11/21 with live music etc. Modi has a lot of potential and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing how this place evolves and improves! read more

The cocktails were fantastic but the arancini was really the star of the whole meal which is why I didn't get a picture. For entrees my husband ordered the birria lasagna and I ordered the corn ravioli. Both were excellent! Our server was very kind and suggested food and drinks. Location is great being at trans bay terminal. Well lit with great music and an ambience which invites. Menu was good for vegetarians with plenty of options. It was just okay. This is a Mexican and Italian fusion restaurant, but every dish had a confused identity and very muted in flavors. If the flavors were there, the execution wasn't quite there. For example, the birria lasagna had some nice flavor from the birria, but the lasagna pasta was chewy and gummy in texture. The pizza looked great, but for some reason had zero flavor. The best dish was the risotto with bone marrow, which was hand scooped tableside by the waiter. The risotto was cooked perfectly, and the bone marrow gave it an extra layer of richness. Service was great, friendly and efficient. read more

Walked by and decided to give this place a try -- it wasn't too crowded, and the ambiance inside was super cute and inviting. One thing I always appreciate is when restaurants offer complimentary items, and here they served free chips with a green salsa (possibly tomatillo?) that was really tasty. We started with the focaccia bread and avocado butter -- I'd never heard of avocado butter before, but I absolutely loved it! It had a rich, creamy flavor that really did taste like a perfect blend of avocado and butter. I ordered the Branzino, and while the fish was thinner than I've had at other places, the flavor was solid. It came with potatoes and a salad, which rounded out the dish nicely. We also tried the quesabirria lasagna -- full of bold flavor and incredibly rich. Definitely a filling dish, so come hungry if you're planning to order it. My friend had the chicken, which looked generous in portion and really well-prepared. All in all, I'd definitely come back to try more from the menu! read more

Lemme start out by saying this was a secret gem at the Sales Force Center tucked away on the side near nightlife. The food is so unique it being Italian-Mexican i love how they blended both cultures together and created bomb food to die for. The service is amazing so welcoming and so friendly.
