Where to begin ... I was so wanting to love Mizuna. It has gotten great reviews from both friends and various food critics, however, the experience fell very short.
Let me start by saying my husband picked Mizuna to celebrate our 4th wedding anniversary and the first big dinner out since having our second child. He booked a reservation using Open Table, the only slot available 8:00 pm - a perfect time to go for a nice romantic dinner. In the notes section of the reservation, he noted that it was our anniversary. We arrived a bit early for our reservation and were promptly seated. No acknowledgement of our special day and very little acknowledgement that we actually had a reservation.
Once at our table we were handed our menus, but were never given any explanation of the menu options. Our waiter did give the spiel of fresh ingredients and monthly menu changes, but never offered the tasting menu or wine pairing. We had read a lot about the tasting menu and were really excited to try it out. When we asked our waiter about the tasting, he did explain it, but really didn't do much to sell it (at $130/person for tasting, wine and cheese, you would think that it would be a good up sell). I did tell the waiter that I had a shell fish allergy and asked if the tasting would be possible. I do not expect special treatment, but have had great luck with various restaurants making exceptions to accommodate. Mizuna would have none of it, the tasting menu was not possible. That's fine, the menu seemed to have plenty of other options.
We orders apps, salad, a main course and a bottle of wine. The wrong bottle was brought to the table and once the mistake was corrected, the bottle was presented with no explanation of what we were about to drink. I started with the quiche and it was good, not great - just good. My husband had the macaroni and cheese with lobster, again good, but not great. We both had the mixed greens salad, which was very good. For our main course I ordered the veal with twice baked potatoes and wilted greens, and my husband had the sea scallops with tomato bisque and crab cake. However, we waited almost 35 minutes between finishing our salads and getting our main course. We watched two other couples that arrived well after we did eat their entire meal while we waited. We we were a bit annoyed about the wait, but didn't make too much of a deal since we were enjoying out time out. When our food finally arrived, it was delivered with little to no fan fare. Honestly, the main courses also mediocre. My twice baked potatoes were over cooked and dry. The veal was okay, but nothing spectacular. My husbands scallops were inconsistent and average.
We tried to make the best of not having the tasting menu and ordered the cheese plate between dinner and dessert. The cheeses were good, but the accompaniments were lacking.
In talking with our waiter he did ask if we were there for a special occasion. To be honest, we did not divulge this bit of information expecting to get something for free, but rather to acknowledge our special day and enjoy the celebration. When it came time for dessert, we were not offered the dessert menu. Instead we were given a complimentary dessert and some dessert wine. I will say it was a nice gestures, but I was hoping that dessert would save the meal.
Three hours after our arrival, we departed Mizuna very disappointed. It was not the fine dinning experience that we had hoped for. The entire night lacked a well rounded culinary experience. In watching the dining room, I never saw any front of house staff check in with patron, the wine presentation was lacking and the wait staff seemed to lack passion for the food they were serving. A good staff goes just as far as good food. Both were lacking in our case. Would like to say that we would give it a second chance, but after dropping almost $300, I don't think I am willing to try again. read more
