It warms my heart to see that Mintleaf is still a popular staple after all these years. As an Alameda native, I have good memories of eating here when I was younger, and whenever I visit, I love bringing my husband here too. I wouldn't call this an authentic Vietnamese restaurant per se, more so an Asian fusion place, but Mintleaf holds its own in terms of flavor, freshness, and variety. Service has always been attentive, and while small, the restaurant is clean, cozy, and modern. There is also outdoor seating if you are bringing a dog. I have dined with my well-behaved, well-trained Siberian in the past. Recently, we were in Alameda to do my dog's birthday photoshoot in honor of my previous dog, and I wanted to go to Mintleaf again. It was later in the evening, and I saw that they close at 8 pm. We arrived around 7:20 and while the staff were starting to clean up since the restaurant was empty, they still greeted us with a smile and seated us promptly. Not long after we arrived, a small group of people also came to sit down, and they were also seated. Another individual arrived to place a to-go order. My husband went with the scallops and prawns over garlic noodles, and I went with their version of bun rieu. We did not have to wait long for our food to be brought to the table. My husband's noodles arrived first, served with their classic plating of slices of tomato and cucumber on the corners of the plate (they have done this as long as I can remember). Soon, my bun rieu arrived, including a small side of herbs. My broth was piping hot and delicious. The noodles were perfectly cooked, and while they were thinner than the usual bun rieu noodles, they still absorbed the flavor of the broth well. The cha was thinly-sliced, and there was a good amount of tofu in the bowl as well. Even though the bowl might look small, it was a perfect dinner portion, and with plenty of broth. I was definitely full after savoring each last drop of broth. My husband loved his garlic noodle dish. There was a good helping of both scallops and prawns, and the noodles were deliciously garlicky. I had a sample of the noodles and they were so good. There are other dishes I've tried in the past, such as the pad Thai and sizzling spicy lemongrass chicken, and they have both been excellent as well (sorry I have no recent photos). Mintleaf is not your usual Vietnamese restaurant, especially with its classier touch, but personally I enjoy their dishes, and will definitely return when I want an Asian fusion wrinkle to my Vietnamese food.

Always the right place for lunch when we're in town.Consistently fresh and delicious. Attentive service!

First time going to Mint Leaf! There was no wait on a Sunday afternoon. There were two staff members helping with tables. Seating is available inside and outside. I ordered the rice plate and was not disappointed. The rice itself wasn't broken, but it was roughly $16.50. Their beef and pork are both good options. My table of three received our food within 15 minutes. There is one restroom and it was clean. There is plenty of parking and the inside of the restaurant was clean too. I'd go again.

Sandwich Combo Small Bowl Of Broth Side Imperial Roll (1)

We've been here at least 4 times and we always come for their bahn mi sandwiches. The service is always great and the servers are very attentive. Food comes fast. The bahn mi combo plate comes with your choice of salad or a bowl of broth (chicken, beef or veggie option) and an imperial roll (meat or veggie option). I ordered the tofu bahn mi and my partner ordered the miso slaw sandwich w/ coconut prawns with a side of sweet potato fries. Everything is delicious and full of flavors. The broth is lovey and pairs well with the sandwich and egg roll. The miso slaw with coconut prawns is something you've never had before. It goes well with the sweet potatoes fries w/ house curry aioli dip. We've also had their vermicelli bowl and the eggplant and tofu claypot as well in the past. The food is always good and the staff are super friendly. It's one of our go to's.

Ginger Lemonade (16oz)

I've ordered from this restaurant a few times now, never disappointing and always filling. Usually get 2 + meals out of an order when ordering for myself. My favorite would be the ginger lemonade, tastes made from scratch or at least there seems to be a lot of fresh ginger soaked into it without a bunch of ginger tidbits floating around and getting in the way. Veggie broth has a good flavor and love getting a batch too good for my own noodles at home, so maybe I get 3 meals out of an order! Veggie egg rolls are good as well and come packed with lots of additional veggie sides, fantastic snack. Steamed broccoli and bok choy are great solo out added to a soup. The garlic noodles were probably my least favorite. There was a lot of added stuff to it which made it more like a garlic chow mein than a straight up garlic noodles to my taste buds. Wouldn't order that one again without changes. All in all there is something for everyone on the menu and you can get creative if you think ahead for a few meals as well or combine things in from your pantry!

Our neighbor told us to try out Mint Leaf for their Bahn Mi a while back but haven't gotten the chance. I got sick recently and was craving a warm bowl of pho noodle soup to open up my sinuses. The broth really hit the spot. My boyfriend love their combo pho with 3 kinds of meat. IMO, the chicken in my pho was over cooked: boiled, steamed, or whatever and it tasted a bit hard. We sat outside to get fresh air and keep our distance from others and a wasp was coming around our table and the others so that was scary. The ambiance inside was okay and outside was clean. Servers here were very attentive. We got like 8 check-ins by different servers within the hour we were there. I still would recommend and would comeback myself to try out their other dishes that looked good on Yelp like..Pad Thai Shrimp & Tofu, Garlic Noodles, Shaken Beef, Vermicelli or Broken Rice Bowl with Shrimp & Egg Rolls, Cold Fresh Spring Rolls, or Crispy Pork Egg Rolls just to name a few. Combo Pho 5/5 Chicken Pho 4.5/5

Shaking Beef

First time trying this place and glad I did. What a great find. Really delicious Vietnamese food. My only complaint is it's a bit pricy for the small portions you get. What we ordered: + Shaking beef - tender and flavorful with lots of onions. Slightly pink on the inside, which is how I like it. + Pineapple curry fried rice - didn't taste any curry flavor, but still really yummy pineapple fried rice. + Vegetarian egg rolls - yummy but they only gave us 1 piece of lettuce. The side of cold vermicelli was a nice touch. + Prawn and scallop garlic noodles - really good garlic noodles. Kinda small serving though.

For a local Vietnamese place in Alameda where it's safe and there's plenty of parking, not bad at all! It isn't San Jose, but for a quick bite, I'm okay with it. It's a little snug on the inside in my opinion, and conversation definitely carry, but let's call it character. It can get loud but it's comfortable. Pho is ok but I did adore the grilled pork spring rolls here. It's fairly priced with good portions as well.

Saigon Vermicelli Bowl "Duc Dac Biet" w/beef.

A day in the office means time to go out for lunch with fun coworkers! This was in the plaza next to the Lucky's in Alameda. You may miss it so be on the lookout for a very pink boba shop next to it. Had the Saigon Vermicelli Bowl "Duc Dac Biet" with beef. A lil' costly, but good portion and yummy! Easy and free parking, lots of menu items to choose from, and it will make you full.

There's only 2 tables inside and a few tables outside on the sidewalk, but it's right in front of a bus stop. For that reason, I think to-go is the way to go. Their banh mi sandwiches have the perfect crispy-soft bun. They are a good size, filled with meat and lots of veggies, and quite reasonably priced. If you can't handle spicy, I'd recommend pulling out the sliced jalapeños in the sandwich. What I had: + Lemongrass pork banh mi - this was so good. The bun is hollowed out so all you have is a thin crispy-soft bun. The pork was moist and the pate added some creaminess. I really enjoyed all the aromatic veggies, though I had to remove 1 slice of jalapeño. + Lemongrass grilled chicken bowl - the chicken was tender and I enjoyed the sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, and pickled veggies. + Eggrolls - these were crispy and the filling was nice and moist. Not sure if it was user error, but I couldn't use the online ordering. When I got to the payment part, it didn't do anything. However, ordering in store didn't take too long. There is metered parking on Webster street, and I didn't have trouble finding a parking spot (maybe I lucked out). Overall, a great place for banh mi to-go.

Came for lunch with my husband while visiting the Pacific Pinball Museum nearby, and this is just a short walk away. Both my husband and I got the vegan protein banh mi that appeared to be a new item on their menu based on the signage, I think it was a lemongrass "beef" one, but they apparently also have a mushroom and tofu banh mi which I will have to try next time we're in the area. Sandwiches were pretty good! Veggies were fresh and the vegan protein was flavorful, and the bread was crispy on the outside and soft in the middle like it should be. The location seems well-kept and clean, and the staff at the register were friendly. There's very limited seating inside the cafe and only a couple of tables outside, so it seems more popular for takeout (and indeed several folks came by to order takeout while we were eating there). Given my husband's current interest in pinball, I suspect we'll visit the museum again and when we do, I expect I would like to come back here for lunch again!

Came for a dinner pickup to-go on a weekday evening. Things I love: - HUGE portions: all other considerations aside, I'd always default to splitting a meal or counting on leftovers. Their salads and sandwiches both are served in generous portions, which helps justify the cost, which itself is not that unreasonable to begin with. - Seating: nice areas inside, as well as an outdoor space that's shared with the neighboring bar. During the daytime when the bar is not open, the back space is a great area to spread out in, and even work in with a small group. - Staff: I read a few negative reviews about the staff here, but I have had nothing but positive experiences, especially given the high customizability of the meals here, they do a great job accommodating requests and making sure you have the meal that you're expecting. - Breakfast burritos: gotta shoutout my favorite breakfast burritos. LOVED the thick side of sliced bread!! Lightly sweet and very earthy tasting. The menu isn't very intuitive--the "salad" menu sign doesn't show the protein options; the proteins are under the "sandwiches" sign. I admittedly stepped into the line underprepared, but the staff here could be so much kinder lol. Latte was alright. A tad too bitter for my taste. They have extensive indoor and patio seating. Great place to meet up with a friend or two and grab a quick/easy food.

I actually haphazardly stumbled upon this place a few months back after hanging out at a brewery…read morenext door. After scoping out the vibes of the place and the menu, I told myself to make sure to give this a shot. The place is in a redeveloped corner of Alameda right next to the bay. Probably used to be Navy base grounds back in the day. But now there's a couple of blocks worth of hip warehouse-y type of buildings, mostly restaurants, beer spots, some lofts and a little retail commerce. Very happening even though the surrounding area is a ghost town. Dining area not too big, maybe a couple of rooms that can hold about 20-30 heads each. Think there's another room for a private party/overflow. Decor pretty minimalist and stark. Service on the upscale side but in my stay, matched the decor, very minimalist and stark. Efficient enough but a little terse with little emotion. But I know service personality can differ from time to time or person to person. Just my obsy for one out. Daily Crudo ($20/4*) I think this rotates daily. Our choices that day was hamachi or a house smoked sturgeon. The sturgeon really piqued my interest but then it really wouldn't be a 'crudo' anymore would it, since I relate crudos to something 'raw-ish'. So I chose the hamachi. Very pretty plating, I love symmetry and balance. The thin slices of hamachi were indeed fresh, sitting in a stealthy pool of yuzu and olive oil. There are some fresno pepper slices and microgreens that garnish and a delicious nori cracker to break and accompany the crudo. This went really well with my glass of Fume Blanc. Caeser ($17/4.5*) We split this salad as their version sounded super cool. A miso-tinged Caeser dressing, lots of rustic garlic croutons and feathery soft grated parm and a soft-boiled egg. I love properly made Caesers and this was one of the best and unique versions I've ever had. The umami punch and the diverse textures just hit with me. A tad salty for a salad, but the crunchy and refreshing lettuce was able to absorb the salt blast. Huge salad too, like ideal for splitting and ridiculously large if for 1. Beef Short Rib ($43/4*) This was on special that night, and since I wasn't feeling Steak Frites (their only other beef entree option) this kinda fell on my lap. Very heavy and hearty dish. The short rib part was impeccable, super tender, gotta be sous vide. Perfectly seasoned with braising elements completely penetrated into the meat. There was a coarse gravy/sauce that covered which was okay, may have been the braising liquid just pureed. Served atop a huge pile of some risotto that I didn't inquire about. This risotto is what made the dish especially heavy. I ate most of it and it put me in a heavy carb coma. Lol. But there was a nice serving of perfectly cooked broccolini which helped balanced out the rich beef and carb heavy risotto. Chocolate Bar ($13/4.5*) Shared this for dessert as I really couldn't take more than just a few bites after the filling entree. But was this impressive, like high end dessert quality. Whoever does the desserts here definitely has some pedigree. The precision cut bar consisted of 3 layers. A brownie layer; a Bailey's mousse; and a salted caramel layer. I was loving the texture of all the different layers playing on one another. And every flavor was distinct without being overly sweet, which hit the right chords with me. A thick ganache garnished off to the side, which was good but just seemed a bit overkill with the already chocolate dominant bar. I think a cream element would have been a better contrast instead of rich chocolate on rich chocolate. But very minor quip on an otherwise skillful dessert. I finished the last few sips of my glass of Rhone with this dessert, and it left me one happy camper. I would definitely return as their style with flavors hits an accord with me. A little French, a smidge of Japanese and a lot of California. Rounding to a fiver, as this place made me more happy than not.

We were the only party in the restaurant. The menu is extremely interesting, with a focus on slow-roasted meats and a California-Japanese fusion to many elements of their dishes. Because we were a party of five, we were able to try a lot on the menu, with some recommendations from the owner: - Corn fritters: Recommended by the owner, who said they're a best-seller. They were delicious and served with strawberry jam. Moist but with a bit of crumble and crumb. I could've eaten the entire plate myself. - Rotisserie cauliflower: With miso butter and furikake. My husband really wanted to try this. It was good, and he really loved it, but it wasn't a standout dish for me. - Trip's triple: 1/4 chicken, pork shoulder, and tri-tip all on a plate with chimichurri and garlic-jalapeño garum on the side. All of the meat was cooked so well, and the sauces were just delicious. This was a really generous serving of meat; my husband had to take some of it home. - Tsukune sando: Two tsukune (chicken and pork) patties with shredded lettuce, fried shallots, Hapa sauce, and a fried egg. I'm not sure what the Hapa sauce was and didn't ask, but this sandwich was just delicious. The patties were great and this is the first time I've tried tsukune. This was a messy sandwich, so I ate it with a fork and knife, but it didn't impact how tasty it was. I can't remember the dishes my in-laws got, but everyone was really happy with their food and what they couldn't finish, they made sure to take home. However, there's always room for dessert, and we went wild and decided to try all four of them. - Butter mochi: coconut butter cake. This was a table favorite. Rich, moist, delicious, and very unique. - Banana pudding: I'm a fan of banana-based or flavored anything, and this was fantastic. Loved the caramelized banana on top. - Choco PB torte: Definitely the richest dessert of the four. This is perfect if you're a chocolate fan. - Apple crumble: Served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Warm and spiced. So good. I honestly can't wait to go back to Spinning Bones. This was a fantastic meal from start to finish and our service was great.
