Overview: my new favorite place for banh mi that's close to home, large portions and great flavor ---- We were taking a walk around Webster and found this place next to an ice cream place that I like. Lemongrass Pork $12 - we added a fried egg $2 extra so the sandwich ended up to be $14 - it has all the typical accompaniments like mayo, daikon, carrots, cucumber, jalapeño, cilantro - this sandwich also came with pate (liver spread) which is one of my favorite additions - the portions are filling - the egg was a good add on but I probably wouldn't do it again, it only can with one fried egg in the middle which was delicious but it's expensive and there was only one so when we got to the ends of the sandwich there was no more egg ---- Notes: - street parking (metered) and residential parking is close by but you might have to walk a few blocks on busy days - we walked from the Saturday Farmers' Market but I love how walkable Alameda is, the walk was quite nice - inside and outside seating available, the inside is very small with only 2 tables, the ambiance isn't super appealing to dine-in - we ordered it to-go but there you can definitely dine-in to eat, most people also ordered to-go and for pick-up - the food took a little bit of time to come out bc they were so popular! First time trying Mango and Mint. I ordered the Lemongrass Chicken Banh Mi Sandwich, and it was excellent. The bread was perfectly crunchy without being hard or sharp, which can sometimes cut your mouth. The chicken was juicy, tender, and packed with rich lemongrass flavor. Banh mi is a little pricey but it was very good. What attracted me here was the smoothies. At home my mom would make similar smoothies using parsley and mint, so I was drawn to that homey aspect. I don't like my smoothies sweet and prefer them grassy or even sour/ bitter. I spoke in Vietnamese to the ladies and workers and they were very sweet; she let me know which smoothie was sweet and which was bitter when I picked it up. I came across this place killing sometime to meet someone. I didnt have any intention to eat, but their window menu had lemon grass chicken over rice. This unlocked a core memory from my time in Davis. I decided to give it a try. Wow!! This just reminded me a tiny mom and pop. I love this place typically I used to get their rice plates or bunh me but today it's a gloomy and cold day so I decided to get the wonton soup. Tried this spot on a whim while walking by, and were pleasantly surprised by the Banh Mi sandwiches ($12). Large soft roll, fresh veggies, and perfectly cooked and seasoned meat. Did not have as much meat or pâté compared to others' pictures, suggesting there is some inconsistency in preparation, but it was still delicious! Service is fast and friendly. This place is hella good! There's a reason why my Vietnamese recommended this spot to me, he claims its the closest to Saigon banh mi you can find in the bay. We came here on a Saturday late afternoon and there were a handful of folks here ordering/dining in. It's a small spot with limited seating, so its mostly for takeout imo. We got 2 banh mi: one cold cut combo and another for lemongrass chicken. We also got a smoothie to go. The banh mi's are legit, I would order extra pate next time. Love how the banh mi are super thick with tons of meat, veggies, and good amount of pate. The bread is fresh and the portions are generous. I was in the area and hungry for lunch. Fortunately, I saw Mango and Mint and decided to give it a try. I got the Vietnamese Chicken Salad. Wow, as you can see by the photo, it's a lot of food! I wish they had a half salad option. As someone on a low-carb diet, I really appreciated that the salad seemed very healthy and fresh. I think for some it might be a little underwhelming flavor wise but this is exactly what I liked about it - that it wasn't over seasoned or sweet. They stand out with the color choices so its easy to spot on the streets, and they have a cute and simple signage, and being next to Cookiebar, both establishments make Webster St look so darn quant. So I did not expect this sandwich would be so massive. So I figure it was just the bread. NOPE--this average sized baguette was jam-packed with all the works! I appreciate the amount of pate and mayo cuz most places skimp on this. The bread tasted quite fresh--thin crisp on the outer layer and soft throughout. Yes this bad boy ripped the insides of my mouth but it's worth it. Everything about this sandwich tasted fresh and just half of it filled me up. RICE BOWL - CHICKEN & PORK COMBO - $15 Steamed White Rice, Romaine Lettuce, Pickled Carrots, Tomato and Cucumbers. Served with FishSauce. Let me tell you this was no bowl--this was a massive DISH that can feed 2 people. Plenty of rice with all the seasoned and tender meats--so good! Unlike most places, this place does not skimp on the veggies. The fish sauce is not tooo sweet and goes perfectly with everything. Yes, I was skeptical about paying $12 for a sandwich but it makes sense with how hard it is these days to keep a clean business open in a decent area that serves up decent, good, and large portion meals. You are getting restaurant quality food that's all made to order or a reasonable price. I've been to mango and mint twice now, and both times, I felt like the sandwich was decent but not quite perfect. My main issue is with their bread. Their roll is quite big, which you would think is good, but it's a bit chewy and my jaw starts hurting before I finish the sandwich. The filling of the sandwiches is good. I've tried both the grilled chicken and the cold cut. Both were decent, but the breadddd! It's also just hurts me to pay $12 for a sandwich when they were like $2.50 growing up and you can still get them for like $6 in Oakland. Even at peppermint baguette on park st, it's only $8! The bf and I also did a side by side comparison of both the sandwiches and egg rolls at mango and mint and peppermint baguette and both agreed that peppermint baguette had much more flavor and was a better bang for your buck! I was happy to see a new Vietnamese sandwich shop open up in Alameda. The exterior is bright and eye-catching, which is why I was curious in the first place. I decided to order online, which was super easy to do. We did a group order of sandwiches, drinks and egg rolls. When I went in for pick-up, they seemed really busy making sandwiches and people were waiting for their orders, so this place must already be popular. This is a takeout place -- I think I saw some chairs, but definitely don't plan to eat there. Sandwich was good, I got the lemongrass chicken banh mi. I think there could've been more meat and condiments in there, but it was still pretty tasty. The star of the show was the egg rolls. They were crispy and so scrumptious. If I want good Vietnamese food in the East Bay, I go to Oakland. Mango and Mint opened last year, and I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. I ordered the Lemongrass pork vermicelli bowl. The bowl has grilled pork, vermicelli noodles, lettuce, mint, cilantro, cucumber, jalapenos, fried shallots, peanuts, and fish sauce. The meat quality was flavorful and not super fatty, like in some places. The fish sauce you pour into the bowl before mixing everything up is delicious. I had their BBQ pork banh mi recently, and it was great, too. They stuff their banh mi a lot compared to other places, but it's also expensive. An average banh mi in Oakland is around $6-8 compared to $12 at Mango and Mint. Their vermicelli bowl is at the right price point, so I recommend ordering this. read more
