OBSESSED with their shrimp & avocado spring rolls!! And when I say obsessed, I mean I order them at least once a week or every other week. I've even had them TWICE in one week. Don't judge me! I recently discovered you can add jalapeños to the rolls, which takes them to another level! Just a heads-up, you have to call in your order for that since it's not an option when ordering online. Now let's talk about that peanut sauce. It might not look the most appetizing at first as it looks gloopy and separated, BUT TRUST ME. Instead going to Cam Huong Bakery in Oakland Chinatown, I stopped here to get the banh mi. Seating capacity for this small sandwich shop probably holds about 10 people. However, they do have outdoor seating for four people. Specialties: noodle bowl, rice bowl, won ton soup, salads, banh mi's, fresh spring rolls, fried egg rolls, smoothies, coffee and tea. After perusing their menu, I decided to order the combo banh mi without the jalapeño peppers and a pineapple mango fruit smoothie. For $12, that sandwich was worth it. The fruit smoothie was refreshing and cool. I don't recommend drinking that smoothie too fast - brain freeze. LOL. Service was quick. This is a nice place to pick up banh mi sandwiches, rice bowls, or a drink. Most of their business is take-out. There's only 2 tables inside and a few tables outside on the sidewalk, but it's right in front of a bus stop. For that reason, I think to-go is the way to go. Their banh mi sandwiches have the perfect crispy-soft bun. They are a good size, filled with meat and lots of veggies, and quite reasonably priced. If you can't handle spicy, I'd recommend pulling out the sliced jalapeños in the sandwich. What I had: + Lemongrass pork banh mi - this was so good. The bun is hollowed out so all you have is a thin crispy-soft bun. The pork was moist and the pate added some creaminess. I really enjoyed all the aromatic veggies, though I had to remove 1 slice of jalapeño. + Lemongrass grilled chicken bowl - the chicken was tender and I enjoyed the sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, and pickled veggies. + Eggrolls - these were crispy and the filling was nice and moist. Not sure if it was user error, but I couldn't use the online ordering. When I got to the payment part, it didn't do anything. However, ordering in store didn't take too long. Nice little banh mi and bowl shop that appears to be part of a chain (although this is my first encounter with them). Came for lunch with my husband while visiting the Pacific Pinball Museum nearby, and this is just a short walk away. Both my husband and I got the vegan protein banh mi that appeared to be a new item on their menu based on the signage, I think it was a lemongrass "beef" one, but they apparently also have a mushroom and tofu banh mi which I will have to try next time we're in the area. Sandwiches were pretty good! Veggies were fresh and the vegan protein was flavorful, and the bread was crispy on the outside and soft in the middle like it should be. The location seems well-kept and clean, and the staff at the register were friendly. There's very limited seating inside the cafe and only a couple of tables outside, so it seems more popular for takeout (and indeed several folks came by to order takeout while we were eating there). Given my husband's current interest in pinball, I suspect we'll visit the museum again and when we do, I expect I would like to come back here for lunch again! read more

Overview: my new favorite place for banh mi that's close to home, large portions and great flavor ---- We were taking a walk around Webster and found this place next to an ice cream place that I like. Lemongrass Pork $12 - we added a fried egg $2 extra so the sandwich ended up to be $14 - it has all the typical accompaniments like mayo, daikon, carrots, cucumber, jalapeño, cilantro - this sandwich also came with pate (liver spread) which is one of my favorite additions - the portions are filling - the egg was a good add on but I probably wouldn't do it again, it only can with one fried egg in the middle which was delicious but it's expensive and there was only one so when we got to the ends of the sandwich there was no more egg ---- Notes: - street parking (metered) and residential parking is close by but you might have to walk a few blocks on busy days - we walked from the Saturday Farmers' Market but I love how walkable Alameda is, the walk was quite nice - inside and outside seating available, the inside is very small with only 2 tables, the ambiance isn't super appealing to dine-in - we ordered it to-go but there you can definitely dine-in to eat, most people also ordered to-go and for pick-up - the food took a little bit of time to come out bc they were so popular! I came across this place killing sometime to meet someone. I didnt have any intention to eat, but their window menu had lemon grass chicken over rice. I always get some fish sauce with mine, but it comes with free peanut sauce. I wish they had a half salad option. As someone on a low-carb diet, I really appreciated that the salad seemed very healthy and fresh. I think for some it might be a little underwhelming flavor wise but this is exactly what I liked about it - that it wasn't over seasoned or sweet. We got 2 banh mi: one cold cut combo and another for lemongrass chicken. We also got a smoothie to go. The banh mi's are legit, I would order extra pate next time. Love how the banh mi are super thick with tons of meat, veggies, and good amount of pate. The bread is fresh and the portions are generous. I've been to mango and mint twice now, and both times, I felt like the sandwich was decent but not quite perfect. My main issue is with their bread. Their roll is quite big, which you would think is good, but it's a bit chewy and my jaw starts hurting before I finish the sandwich. The filling of the sandwiches is good. I've tried both the grilled chicken and the cold cut. Both were decent, but the breadddd! It's also just hurts me to pay $12 for a sandwich when they were like $2.50 growing up and you can still get them for like $6 in Oakland. Even at peppermint baguette on park st, it's only $8! The bf and I also did a side by side comparison of both the sandwiches and egg rolls at mango and mint and peppermint baguette and both agreed that peppermint baguette had much more flavor and was a better bang for your buck!
