We've been back to peppermint baguette several times now and I can confidently say that it is the best banh mi spot in alameda! I am rlly picky with banh mi sandwiches, and especially hate when the bread is too hard to chew or cuts up the roof of your mouth. Peppermint baguette does neither and it is perfectly seasoned with a good amount of filling at a great price. Now my fave banh mi spot is def ba le in Oakland, but peppermint is just sooo close and it is almost as good and not too much more expensive. We always get the cold cut combo and it always hits. The veggie sandwich I would pass on. The egg rolls are good and very well seasoned, even though they might look small and lackluster in the box. The flavorrrr though. Solid! We did a taste test of the cold cut sandwich and egg rolls at both peppermint baguette and mango and mint, and we both felt that peppermint baguette tasted better and is a better value. As you see in the pics, mango and mint's presentation def looks better, but their egg rolls were a bit lacking in flavor and the roll of their bread was bigger, so it started hurting my jaw after a while. The sandwich was also almost twice the price of peppermint's!

This time we stopped in to try the grilled chicken banh mi sandwich, and the vegetarian vermicelli bowl. Both were very good and highly recommended. Especially the vegetarian vermicelli dish. The veggie protein was thin strips of fried tofu and tarot, tossed in roasted soy/rice powder. It comes with dry roasted and chopped peanuts, pickled carrots/daikon strips, chiffonade-cut fresh herbs of thai basil/cilantro/romaine lettuce, rice vermicelli noodles, and a nicely balanced veggie version of the nuoc mam/cham dipping sauce which is usually made with fish sauce for this Vietnamese dish. Grilled chicken banh mi was also very good with a good serving of chicken.

Doordash review: Ordered both a combination(photo shown) and a head cheese only(no photo), and that was pretty good. The sandwich tastes better than it looks. Good bread. Didn't cut up my mouth could use a little more pate, mayo and meat, but for the price, it's not so bad.

Peppermint Baguette opened where Pho Nation Express was, next to a vibrant Gong Cha. A few tables inside & outside available for dining. Offerings: drinks, snacks, egg rolls, waffles, banh mi. Ordered at the counter, pd, eats ready in 10ish minutes. Bites: grilled pork banh mi (8) -big chewy baguette partially filled with cilantro, daikon, jalepeno slices, carrot shreds, red onions, smear tasting like mayo-butter not pate. -some parts crunchy. Protein tasted like steamed/boiled pork though some parts looked grilled. -yummy like comfort food though it didn't taste like the usual 3.5 stars

Date: 9/28/2024 Time: 4:45 PM 65° Sunny I was craving a banh mi since I haven't had one in over 10 years. A yelp search for banh mi venues in Alameda resulted in three places - Rang Dong in Neptune Plaza, Mango & Mint on Webster near Lincoln and Peppermint Baguette on Santa Clara near Park. I know there are other places that serve banh mi, but I have to take into consideration how close are these places to public transportation, mainly AC 20, 51A, and 96. I have never been to Peppermint Baguette and my curiosity got the best of me. A bus ride from the west end to the Park Street Shopping District would be a nice outing for the weekend. How convenient that the bus stop is directly across the street from this sandwich shop. Peppermint Baguette shares space with Gong Cha. Neat how one side has food on the menu while the other side does the beverages. Ambiance: a soft feminine color theme of lavender, cream and pink, soothing colors to the soul of this woman. Indeed very charming and it exudes romance. Okay, I need to stop with what is going to sound like a romantic novel. LOL. Eats: #4 headcheese banh mi and #9 grilled chicken banh mi. It was difficult to decide which one I wanted, so I ordered the two aforementioned banh mi's. Their food menu has a nice selection of assorted appetizers. The prices are reasonable. The cost of two banh mi's was $16.89 (tax included). Young lady who handled the cash register duty handed me a $5.00 bill. I told her she gave me the incorrect change. I got the correct change of $3.11. How was my headcheese banh mi? The meat portion was great and it was on point. I'm saving the grill chicken banh mi for later. I am definitely eager to do a return visit for the fried potstickers (12 for $7.75) and the 7-pc. shrimp tempura for $6.75. It is also an opportunity for me to check out Gong Cha. Seating capacity for dining indoor at Peppermint Baguette is about 10 people. Overall, I am glad I stopped in at Peppermint Baguette.

Full transparency: I was hesitant to come here solely because of the name. Decided to give it a try because I was getting a drink at Gongcha and I'm glad I did. I just wanted a snack, so I got the popcorn chicken. It was tasty! Comes with quite a bit of chicken and can definitely be shared. Posted some menu photos to show their variety of drinks and food. Miscellaneous: - Indoor seating available (one table and bar stools) - Parking is available via street parking or the parking garage around the corner - From when I placed my order, it took about 10-15 minutes to get my chicken (not bad)

Vegetarian spring rolls (not on menu but if u order the reg shrimp spring rolls & indicate Vegetarian instead). Flavorful and fresh!

Shredded tofu banh mi's and spring rolls! We love how this place customizes!! Ordered on DoorDash and wrote out our customized requests. They got everything right and everything ordered was delicious and fresh!

THIS WAS A GREAT FIND! Hidden in Gong cha, It is easy to miss. use to get popcorn chicken from happy lemon, which was always bland, soggy, and lack of proper flavoring. THIS PLACE IS opposite of that, popcorn chicken done right! I think it is the only place in alameda and oakland that does it right. banh mi was also really good, but i thought the vegetables could have been more pickled. Staff was also very friendly. Highly recommend and glad it exists in alameda. I dont know where else id go for this quality around here.

Decided to try this new place for lunch while walking by. Connected to Gongcha, the store has their own section and waiting area which was nice. I ordered the pork banh mi sandwich and their chocolate egg puff waffle for dessert. Overall, the food was pretty good. The only thing is that I wish there was more meat added into the sandwich but the portion size was still enough to get full on. Would come again to try more of their menu, they have lots of different snacks and sandwiches available.

Ordered to go. Got 2 special combo and 1 spring roll. I've been trying to find a good ban mi sandwich place and this is by far my favorite place so far. The portions are even and the meat quality and quantity were just enough. Best part, they have pate! Not like other places where it's mayo or something off. The spring was ok, I enjoy more than just noodles, lettuce, cucumber and shrimp in my spring rolls. The roll was tight and the presentation was there but I just prefer some herbs and extra veggies or meat in my spring rolls. The spring roll sauce was the norm hoisin sauce and peanut butter. Nice to have a chili oil on the side too which I mixed it altogether with my Siracha and fish sauce at home. I will come back for the ban mi tho!

Quality/Quantity Grilled Chicken Banh Mi - My wife has been craving this and we have not found an "authentic" place in Alameda yet. Well hopefully this will be the place...? I wanted to eat it there (fresh), but my wife insisted that we bring it back to the house. Overall, it was good and with generous chicken. So this will be my wife's "go-to" place? Atmosphere - This half of the business has gone through a few businesses, and maybe even a few owners...? I believe they are the same owners as Gong Cha, the shared tea business...? Good size location, but most customers take to-go. For both businesses. Metered street parking, or free neighborhood parking if you do not mind walking a block or two. Is purple your favorite color? Cool purple decor throughout. Service - Good. Answered (put up with) all my questions, even some of the personal ones, like how long have you been here, are you the same owners as Gong Cha, same family, etc. Price - $8, reasonable price. Owner Comment - Congrats on your one month new business. I hope you last longer than the previous sandwich businesses.

I might have just found my new favorite place for BanhMi! I'm thrilled because this place has what I consider the original baguette. It's soft crunchy! And the cold cut meats, very plentiful. Really glad I spent my afternoon here. Ambiance is close to a vietnamese cafe with v-pop playing. It's also right next to a Gong-Cha, so double win!

Fun and delicious…read more Vietnamese food is at the top when it comes to bright and refreshing bites, and Bacogai embodies that with a modern atmosphere as well as some tasty dishes. The duck salad was a hit. Citrus, some fish sauce. A great way to open up your appetite. The wings also had a bit of fish sauce funkiness on their glaze, and were juicy and crispy. The shaking beef with the with the rice noodles and lettuce was also a crowd-pleaser. The beef was tender and flavorful. We tried two hot pot flavors: sweet and sour and the pork bone broth. I preferred the sweet and sour one with the fish, prawns, and lots of interesting veggies like okra and the bac-ha which was fanstastic at soaking up the broth. I found the pork one a bit gamey, and the pork being already in the hot-pot was not super tender. Service was friendly and generally attentive. Definitely worth checking out for a date or a group dinner.

I've tried both the Oxtail/beef and pork hotpot, both were really good, I like the pork a little better because I'm a huge tonkotsu ramen fan, and the broth reminded me of that a lot. The beef luc lac, which is sort of like shaking beef over vermicelli and lettuce is also excellent. They now charge extra for broth refills, which they did not the first time I dined here, around a year or so ago. Overall, this is a nice addition to Alameda's dining options and I hope they stick around!

The pho, the rice plate and the bun were delicious! It's been a while since I enjoyed these dishes…read moreso much that this will now be my go to place and my recommended place for these entree. The pho was right on. Piping hot soup that didn't cool down until after you're done even on a cold day. That's just perfect for the wintery weather. The soup was so good - the right amount of aromatics and the beef flavor. And it wasn't overly oily. The amount of meat to noodle ratio was perfect, and I would even dare say I felt there was a lot of meat for a regular bowl of pho that I didn't end the pho with just noodles but had meat to go to the last bite. The rice plate, where we had pork chop with fried spring rolls was yummy! The pork chop was well seasoned that my kids ate it without complaining anything about it. Some places use black pepper and even too much of it to potentially cover up for lack of flavor or perhaps low quality meat. The fried spring rolls were delicious and not too oily either. The bun though with good amount of fresh greens was still a very filling bowl with the amount of meat, spring roll and noodles. The taste of it with the fish sauce was reminiscent of bun in Vietnam. The only thing that ok instead of being amazing was the marinated fried chicken with sauce as it was on the spicier side with the fresh chili and the marinate didn't seem to penetrate into the chicken well enough. Service was reasonably fast, but then again we were there before the restaurant filled up starting at 7pm.

It warms my heart to see that Mintleaf is still a popular staple after all these years…read more As an Alameda native, I have good memories of eating here when I was younger, and whenever I visit, I love bringing my husband here too. I wouldn't call this an authentic Vietnamese restaurant per se, more so an Asian fusion place, but Mintleaf holds its own in terms of flavor, freshness, and variety. Service has always been attentive, and while small, the restaurant is clean, cozy, and modern. There is also outdoor seating if you are bringing a dog. I have dined with my well-behaved, well-trained Siberian in the past. Recently, we were in Alameda to do my dog's birthday photoshoot in honor of my previous dog, and I wanted to go to Mintleaf again. It was later in the evening, and I saw that they close at 8 pm. We arrived around 7:20 and while the staff were starting to clean up since the restaurant was empty, they still greeted us with a smile and seated us promptly. Not long after we arrived, a small group of people also came to sit down, and they were also seated. Another individual arrived to place a to-go order. My husband went with the scallops and prawns over garlic noodles, and I went with their version of bun rieu. We did not have to wait long for our food to be brought to the table. My husband's noodles arrived first, served with their classic plating of slices of tomato and cucumber on the corners of the plate (they have done this as long as I can remember). Soon, my bun rieu arrived, including a small side of herbs. My broth was piping hot and delicious. The noodles were perfectly cooked, and while they were thinner than the usual bun rieu noodles, they still absorbed the flavor of the broth well. The cha was thinly-sliced, and there was a good amount of tofu in the bowl as well. Even though the bowl might look small, it was a perfect dinner portion, and with plenty of broth. I was definitely full after savoring each last drop of broth. My husband loved his garlic noodle dish. There was a good helping of both scallops and prawns, and the noodles were deliciously garlicky. I had a sample of the noodles and they were so good. There are other dishes I've tried in the past, such as the pad Thai and sizzling spicy lemongrass chicken, and they have both been excellent as well (sorry I have no recent photos). Mintleaf is not your usual Vietnamese restaurant, especially with its classier touch, but personally I enjoy their dishes, and will definitely return when I want an Asian fusion wrinkle to my Vietnamese food.
