Tried the cereal and the churro icecream. In my option, they were both too sweet and not that good. Also got three different cookies which were also too sweet but definitely better than the icecream. The people I was with couldn't even finish the icecream so it was not worth it.
Wanted to see what all the hype was about! I've never been to the NYC location, but my expectations were still high based on reputation alone. My friend and I popped in on a drizzly Sunday and we were the only ones there! I appreciated they had a weather door for our cold Chicago winters. Not much seating inside - seems more like a take-to-go kinda place. We decided to try their 3 cookies for $10 deal and split the confetti, compost, and cornflake marshmallow. I thought they were just ok, a little sweet - nothing I'd get again. My friend said the truffles are better; I'd like to try the soft serve sometime too. The cake slices at $12 each are too expensive for my wallet. Overall, this first visit wasn't overly impressive - kinda wondering what all the hubbubs about?
I was in the area and decided to take advantage and stop on in to see what the hype has been about all these years. I can say definitely nothing special. If this is what New York has to offer, I will say Chicago bakeries are way better. Maybe I didn't get the right thing. I'm not a big fan of soft serve so I went for some cookies and a slice of their Milk Bar Pie Slice, which was the best thing ordered. Reminds me of the gooey butter cakes served in St. Louis. We also bought a chocolate chip cookie and Triple Peanut Butter Cookie. This cookie was also really good. Overall, it's way too expensive. I'm glad I finally tried it, just not sure I'll be regular here.
Super cute shop! recommend the soft serve ice cream! The cereal flavor is amazing! The cake truffles are soo good also! Definitely get these! Service was super friendly & happy to let us try a sample of the two flavors of soft serve. Other flavor was lemon something which we didn't care for, but we're not lemon fans. Hubs got the 3 pack of truffles and LOVED the birthday cake!
I've been wanting to try Milk Bar after having bought the cookies at the grocery store. My kids and I wandered in on a Friday when there was relatively low traffic. The people behind the counter were helpful in telling us about the different offerings. We choose a cookie for each of the kids and then a slice of the milk pie. The cookies and pie were sweeter than we are used to. I think if we had a glass of milk it would have helped to was the, down. There are other items we would like to try so we will most likely be n}back.
This place is so cute, the person taking my cookie order was absolutely so nice! I really enjoyed how I walked in and was greeted once I got to the counter. The cookies were good. We got the oatmeal cream which was our favorite and the confetti and chocolate chip marshmallow. This place is right in the heart of West Loop next to the Hoxton hotel and Cira. It wasn't too busy on. Wednesday evening but I definitely know it can get busy on a Friday night and the weekend. Definitely have to try their milk cakes next time.
Where are you able to get the best treats in the West Loop? Look no further than Milk Bar! Cookies, truffles, pie, soft serve all amazing. Cool space with seating to enjoy your treats. The staff is also super helpful and make the experience even better! Pro Tip: Hoxton hotel is attached to Milk Bar so if your staying there you made a great choice! :)
I've been excited to try Christina Tosi's Milk Bar for the longest time. Years even!! I know her OG location is in NYC and with the expansion of Milk Bar into different cities, I finally tried it out here in Chicago. The desserts are quite sweet and quite pricey at $11 for a slice, $8 for slice of pie. I tried the famous birthday cake. I suspect maybe it's just not as fresh so the quality fell short, the crumble of the cake didn't seem as moist and I couldn't taste "birthday" cake, just sweet. My dad like the pie with it's buttery chewy texture.
My fiance and I stopped here after dinner at Duck Duck Goat around the corner and picked up some treats to go! He in particular has followed Christina Tosi and was looking forward to the arrival of this location. We got an array of cookies, a cake truffle, a piece of pie and a piece of cake, as well as the cereal with milk ice cream. So we had dessert for a week! I preferred the cookies, particularly the compost (chocolate chip, pretzel and butterscotch) and the Chocolate chip 'n chunk. Their signature pie was very sweet, too much so for me, though he liked it. We both liked the strawberry shortcake cake but took a couple days to eat it because one slice was large and pretty sweet. The milk and cereal ice cream was good; any sweeter and it would have been too much for me. However, don't leave this one for too long or the cornflakes will get soggy. Overall, the compost cookie was my favorite! Stop in for a sweet treat next time you are at the Hoxton.
Ambiance - small dessert shop, part of a hotel, really maximized their space, and offers a small section for customers to enjoy food/drinks Service - got my cereal milk soft serve ice cream cup within 5 min of ordering, the cashier looked like she really didn't want to work there Food - cereal milk ice cream + cornflake crunch topping had an amazing savory balance, highly recommend
Milk Bar was one of my favorite spots to visit in NYC, so I was over the moon when the new Chicago location opened! I ordered a sampling of some of their popular items and made sure to take some for the road to get the full experience. These included classic cereal milk soft serve, new strawberry shortcake slice, a birthday truffle, Chicago-exclusive hot dog bun, and a corn cookie. I found most items to be a bit sweet for my preference, slightly dry, and with less flavor than I remembered. The soft serve used to be my favorite ice cream with a standout Frosted Flakes flavor, but I found it to taste more like a fast food vanilla this time. The strawberry filling tasted artificial and the birthday truffle was a similar sugar bomb. The hot dog bun was very interesting- I think I liked it, but the sweet mustard and hot dog ratio was a bit off, with the spread overpowering the meat a bit. I did enjoy the soft corn cookie and this was definitely the highlight. Overall, it's worth a visit if you want to avoid shipping fees and see what the hype is about. Maybe it was an off day, but I wouldn't trek too far out of the way to make a return visit.
I first visited Milk Bar about ten years ago in New York. Since then, I've only occasionally stopped by to grab a few packaged cookies as small treats to bring home to friends. This recent visit was my first in years, and I was surprised by how much everything still tasted just like I remembered. The cornflake cookie and compost cookie are still my favorites, and I'm glad they've stuck to their core offerings without changing the recipes. That said, my palate has definitely shifted over time. These cookies are very sweet--almost overwhelmingly so without a strong cup of coffee to balance things out. The cookies are perfect for sharing in an office kitchen, but if you're buying just for yourself, I'd recommend sticking to one cookie at a time--any more than that and the sugar can be a bit much.
Worth the hype! The hot dog bun, especially when they heat it up for you, is so tasty and has all the flavors of a classic Chicago dog. It's savory and has a bit of heat and the bun is fluffy. If you don't like mustard, you're not going to like this imo. The cake balls are moist and flavorful but extremely sweet. The strawberry one was my favorite, it didn't taste artificial. The cookie was a good mix of sweet and savory and the cornflakes were still crunchy. I liked the texture of the cookie- soft on the inside and crisp around the edges. Overall 1 cookie, 1 hot dog bun and 3 cake balls were $21. Love the ambiance of the store too. They have seating near the window and a wooden stair style area. The staff are all super friendly as well.
The famous NYC-born dessert shop has finally landed in Chicago, and it fits right in on Fulton Market. The star of the show is the Milk Bar Pie, better known as "crack pie," and the nickname is earned. Gooey, buttery, and sweet with a caramelized crust, it's the kind of dessert you can't stop picking at until it's gone. The rest of the menu holds up too. There's a great selection of cookies and truffles, each one fun and indulgent, and the cereal milk soft serve is a must-try. It's creamy, nostalgic, and tastes just like the milk left at the bottom of your cereal bowl. Whether you're a longtime fan from the New York shops or trying it for the first time, Milk Bar is worth the trip. Chicago's dessert scene is better for having it. Go hungry, and leave with a box to take home. read more
Milk Bar has been viral for a while now. I'm glad that I was able to finally try it. However, I think that they are very overhyped, and they take advantage of this by overpricing their goods. The cake balls are delicious (but very expensive...probably not worth it). The chocolate cake was not very chocolatey and extremely small for $12. Although I'm glad to try it, I probably won't be buying again. Interior was cute and fun; service was quick! read more
Milk Bar Chicago gets 4/5 stars from me! I love the cute atmosphere and playful aesthetic, especially with its location next to The Hoxton. Having visited the California location, I was hoping for that same fun personality, and the Chicago space was still charming. I ordered my usual favorites, the Milk Bar Pie and Cereal Milk Ice Cream, and enjoyed both. The ice cream tasted a little saltier than I remembered from California, although it had been a few years since my last visit. The service was great, too! The staff was friendly, patient, and helpful when we were deciding what to try. Overall, a sweet experience with a cute atmosphere and great customer service! read more

I was excited to see that Milk Bar made it's way to Chicago! I went on a Friday evening and it got pretty busy since it was post-dinner time. I was looking forward to trying their soft serve and cake but I was disappointed at the poor quality, especially because it's so hyped - also not to mention kinda expensive for what you get. The cereal milk soft-serve was good - it has a sweet and salty flavor and was well balanced but also nothing special to it. The cup of soft-serve was already $7 and adding a topping is an additional $1.50 and they are the cheapest toppings you could put on ice cream (sprinkles, cornflakes, fudge sauce). I would much rather go down the street to Jeni's for an ice cream fix or even trek to Vaca's Creamery for soft-serve. The birthday cake was the biggest disappointment. The only good thing about the cake was the frosting, but even then, it tasted like every other frosting out there. The cake was so dry and overall, tasted like stale grocery store cake if not worse. Also, it was $11 for the smallest slice ever!!! Goddess and the Grocer down the street sells large rainbow cake slices for $8 that will fix your craving. My partner got the sundae and pie slice combo and I will say the pie slice was probably the best thing here. The staff were really nice and welcoming though! read more

FINALLY! I am so excited Milk Bar has finally come to Chicago! We stopped in in the evening on Friday night. There was a lined but luckily it didn't spill out into the street. We waited maybe 25 minutes? The staff was working as fast as they could. And still so nice, though it was busy. It's really cute inside. Some seating, and some cute designs very IG ready for photos. There is a vast menu, with their staple Milk bar choices as well as some Chicago specific items. The location is attached to the lobby of the Hoxton Hotel. read more

Went on opening day. As expected, there was a long line, but moved decently fast. Christina Tosi was there and working. She took photos and chatted with customers. Cute store, space was bigger than expected. There is limited seating with stools along the window and open leveled platform seating along a wall. In addition to the sweet treats, they sell Milk Bar merch: sweatshirts, hat, bandanas, books, and possibly converse high tops (on display). Had to get a sampling, so we picked up a hot dog bomb, pancake soft serve, milk bar pie, confetti cookie and a slice of red velvet. Approx $40. Not cheap, but on par with other places. Found spots along the window. Ate the hot dog bomb and pancake soft serve there. The hot dog bomb was served heated. Was quite flavorful. I was afraid the mustard would be too strong give the amount inside, but it was mild as it was mixed with something I couldn't identify. The combo was good, definitely represented a Chicago dog! Would I get it again? No, but it was a fun novelty item to get once. The pancake soft serve represented a pancake well. Had that vanilla buttermilk pancake flavor with syrupy sauce. Took the rest home and haven't tried it yet. read more

Tiny establishment; not enough room to fit patrons, line was out the door. I had been waiting to try this place for years! Came to Chicago and found out one had just opened. It wasn't what I thought it would be...my husband did not like anything I got. I purchased cookies, cake, cake balls. The whole cake is smaller in person. read more
Walked in after dinner on a Tuesday night, and there was only like one group that they had already bought their goodies and they were eating them. So it was really great to get a good look of the place since it is on the smaller end and part of the hotel. The staff are very nice. They were attentive, which was great because I was gonna buy a lot of treats. I got the compost cookie, chocolate confetti, confetti cookie, and a peanut butter cookie. I got a piece of the birthday cake and a piece of the quadruple chocolate cake as well as one pie slice (which I think was named as the crack pie at some point), and of course I got the hotdog pastry because it's for Chicago so I gotta do it for Chicago. I don't really eat a lot of confetti cake or cookies, but I think milk bar made some nice options here. The pastry chef Christina Tosi, I feel like, really cracked code to making good treats. I really liked the pie. It was so legally, but also sweet and tiny bit savory. I don't think all the treats were overwhelmingly sweet at all. Since it's a big brand, I thought could they replicate the flavors all over the US and yah they can! The only bummer was that the pancake soft serve was out because the machine was not working. I thought that was kind of funny because it is like McDonald's. I'd come back for the soft serve and the pie! read more
TL; DR: Quick place (would not sit and eat here), great pie, and funky cookies If you're looking for a cookie that is good to share and a little bit different than the regular ones this is a great option. I think between this place and Levain cookies. I would rather have a cookie at Levain down the street. However, I would go back for their pie since it was so gooey and delicious. read more
One of my favorite dessert places has finally found its way to the Windy City! Of course, I had to try my go-to cereal milk (with corn flakes, of course) and a packet of birthday cake truffles. Exactly what I expected. The cereal milk was smooth, creamy and had that distinct flavor of Cap'n Crunch and the corn flakes added the actual crunch without overpowering the flavor. And the birthday cake truffles always seem tiny, but they pack a wallop of flavor in every bite. Thank you Milk Bar for coming to Chicago! If you're near Fulton Market, stop on by, you won't be disappointed! read more
We ordered the: Cookies: Cornflake Chocolate Chip Marshmallow, Portillo Chocolate Cake Cookie, Compost, Oatmeal Cream, Chocolate Chip 'N Chunk, Triple PB B'Day Cake Milk Bar Pie Cookies were my favorite dessert here and overall, solid with soft chewy centers and crispy edges. Milk Bar Pie was small, not very flavorful, and pricey $7. I have a sweet tooth but B'day Cake was so insanely sugary(and also quite pricey $11), I couldn't take more than 2 bites. All of the desserts tasted more sugary than average so maybe stick to one item per person or else big sugar crash. Flavors are not particularly interesting but that's okay. It's a go-to, basic dessert spot for kids and sweet tooths. Service was good. It's a small space with very limited seating. read more
Loooooove a cereal milk soft serve with cornflake topping. I love the sweet/salty & creamy/crunchy combo. It's also good in pint form. Love the milk bar pie. The corn cookie is v interesting (kinda tastes like play doh in a good way?). read more
First time at milk bar and I got the cereal milk soft serve with the cornflakes added! This was a fun thing to try and very nostalgic flavors, but definitely needed the cornflakes for a good crunch. The cookies looked good too and I'd like to go back and try them! Prices are a little steep as expected but a fun spot to grab dessert after dinner in west loop. They have a few tables inside and out to sit and eat. read more
The aesthetic of this place is great. There are lots of great options, however we felt it was a bit pricey for what it was. The flavors were just ok. I got the birthday shake with strawberry ice cream and my friend got the cereal milk. Cereal milk and shaje could use some work in the flavor department. Over very cute for our first time, not sure if I'll go back again read more

Finally got to experience Milk Bar! Got the special carrot cake soft serve and 3 cookies to go as a gift. The ice cream was perfect... unique cereal milk flavor with a carrot cake twist that wasn't too sweet. Cool interior with bleacher like seating. Having been to the Milk Bar locations in NYC, I vaguely knew what to expect. The sweets here are about nostalgic American treats, which tend to be very sweet. I've always been a fan of the cereal milk soft serve, corn cookie, and the milk bar pie (despite it being so sweet). I haven't been to a Milk Bar in years, so my memory may be flawed. However, the cereal milk soft serve was much icier than my memory on my recent visit. In my memory, the soft serve was creamy as a good ice cream should be. This time, the texture was almost like a sorbet. It wasn't unpleasant, but it felt like it was severely lacking in milk fat. It felt like a "frozen dairy dessert". At $7 for a small cup, I expect better quality ice cream. I will say the flavor is still on point with the balance of sweet and salty cornflakes. It wasn't bad, but I was disappointed because I thought it would be better. I was hoping to order a corn cookie, but it doesn't look like they sell them at this location. They only had cookies with cornflakes. If I return, I may try the milk bar pie again to see if I still enjoy it. In the end, the ice cream still fulfilled my craving. Although I'm unhappy with the poor quality and steep cost, I might still return when I crave the cereal milk flavor, or to try a seasonal soft serve flavor. read more

Milk Bar was the perfect late-night treat! As a first-time customer, I'll definitely be returning. I tried the cereal milk ice cream with the cereal topping based on the server's recommendation, and it was absolutely top-tier. I couldn't resist grabbing a slice of the birthday cake to go--and honestly, I wish I had just bought the whole cake! read more
